1) enable f8 boot console on your boot image:  http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/546-how-can-i-troubleshoot-windows-pe-booting-in-sccm/  this will get you to a command prompt on the client
2) look at the smsts.log for exactly why your client is failing osd:  http://blogs.technet.com/inside_osd/archive/2007/12/13/troubleshooting-tips.aspx
3) also look at the reports for information as to why your OSD is failing:  http://blogs.technet.com/inside_osd/archive/2007/12/13/troubleshooting-tips.aspx

Hi,
Its not the Boot image what has problems. Its one single OS package as others workjust fine

lol... ok... but enabling F8 will allow you to get to the smsts.log which should contain some more information about why the single OS package is failing.

OK, it looks like (as descripted in the logs) that the Hash Value for the package GID00004 is not correct.
I've seen this before with Boot WIMS, if GID00004 is a boot WIM package, then try creating a new Boot Wim, deploying it to the relevant DPs, assigning it to th TS and try again.
If GID00004 is not a Boot WIM, then try updating the package, and keep an eye on DistMgr.log to ensure it get's distributed Ok.

Hi have recreated the OS Install Packlage and have distributed it again to the Primary Child site. Still the same issue as for example the same OS in English is running fine. GID00004 was an OS Install Package.
I have the log file from the F8 boot atached

OK, now the package with an hash error is GID0002A .. which is the OS Install Package, Check the source directory for files with odd characters, or extremely long directory paths .. this can sometime cause a hash-check mismatch.
Hash could not be matched for the downloded content. Original ContentHash = A9173DC49D149170C0F7F5526154AC4381ED0DC0, Downloaded ContentHash = 88601C0BA124401EA13790D2F318AF04CB283DD1      ApplyOperatingSystem

Update the distribution points of the package that was failing. I have had this same problem and a distribution point update will fix it.

    Hi,
I normally use this solution from Chris Nackers to deploy the latest EP definitions during OSD and deploy a custom EP policy, it works great. The policy will be downloaded when the client is registered.

  • SCCM 2012 OSD task sequence condition

Is there a way to set a condition on a step that looks to see if the machine is already known to SCCM / Active Directory?
I have a step that names the PC using ITX Solutions AutoName function. I want to say only use this step if the machine is not known.

This is essentially a follow on to: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3c6f37ad-b3dc-4219-ae7f-e6c51f05d5bf/sccm-2012-osd-retain-computer-name-on-reimage-rebuild?forum=configmanagerosd
To my knowledge, there is nothing explicitly built-in; however, you might be able to check _SMSTSMachineName to see if it matches the default WinPE naming convention of MINNIT_* or _SMSTSClientGUID to see if it has a value.
You could also put a task in before the format and partition step to check for an existing installation.

  • Create a prompt using MDT 2012 in SCCM 2012 OSD task sequence

    Hi Experts,
I need some help with SCCM 2012 Task sequence using MDT 2012.
Here is the scenario:I want to build a task sequence  where it will propmt whether the technican want to build a new build or refresh. Based on the technicians choice the task sequence will perform specific actions.
We can create the prompt using HTA or VBScript or some otherways.
But the requiremnt for us is to Use ONLY MDT 2012, not any other ways.
Is it possible to do like the above with UDI?
Please can someone shed some light how to do will be great.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
UDI may achieve what you want. Take a look at the blogs below.

  • T540p - Thinkpad Pro Dock - 90w model 40A1009xx - SCCM 2012 r2 Task Sequence

My company receently purchased 40 Lenovo T540p and 40 Pro Docks
We are using SCCM 2012 r2.
I downloaded the sccm driver package for the Lenovo T540p.
Imaged the laptop and all seemed okay until I connected it to the docking station.
First off it would not recongize anything connected to the usb's so I reinstalled the usb 3.0 driver.
When I did that it did recongize usb deviced, but now the dock shows up as an unrecongized device.
Also if I undock the laptop and redock it I have to reboot the laptop for it to recongize what is connected to the usbs in the back.
Note there are no video problems.

We do not create SCCM driver packs for the Edge line of products.  As an alternative you can use Update Retriever to download hardware drivers for a selected model and then use the Export feature to create a folder containing the source files for the drivers.  This can then be used in the Driver Import Wizard which will locate the INF files and only import the files referenced by the INF files.
You mention you are using SCCM 2012 R2.  This means you should be using the Windows ADK for 8.1 which also means your boot images should be using Windows PE 5.  For your boot images you should be using the Windows 8.1 driver (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/herr01ww.exe)
In your OSD task sequence you need to be deploying Windows 7 drivers (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/her101ww.exe)
Make sure you keep these separate.  Meaning you should have a driver package for the Windows 7 drivers that you reference in an Apply Drivers task and this package should not include the Windows 8.1 drivers.  Add just the 8.1 drivers to the boot image.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Task Sequence

    Hello,
I exported a task sequence from my old sccm server.  For some reason when I push the exported task sequence on my new sccm server to new clients its trying to point them to the old site code.  Can someone tell me what step in
the task sequence is causing this?  Thanks.
    Charles

    Hi Charles,
Have you checked your Base/GOLD image? I ask that because if you use SCCM to build your GOLD image using a Build and Capture process, there is a step called "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" which points to the SCCM Package. There is a Installation
Properties text box, where you would type something like "SMSMP=SCCMMP".
Unless you have your SCCM environment configured to use "SMSMP=AUTO" for assignment, it might have a reference to a specific MP/DP there.
That same step exists in the OSD task sequence, so maybe check in case it has a reference to an old SCCM server.

  • SCCM 2012 Export Task Sequence fails with generic error message

We have a complex task sequence comprising of more than 50 applications\packages, 1975 drivers, 18 driver packages etc etc. Its long, it's big and it will not export with it's content.
We have several environments for development test and live. I am attempting to export the primary task sequence with all it's dependencies from live so that I can port it over to a new development environment.
I can export the zip file without content and it comes to 92Mb in size. The entire task sequence software set is 50Gb+. When I attempt to export with all dependencies and content the process gets about 60% of the way through and fails with the error
"Error: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"
Googling the error roughly defines the problem as 'the export process cannot access the defined source path for one of the dependant items'
I wrote a PowerShell script that looks as every application, package, driver, driver package, boot image, os image and software update package in the entire SCCM software library and verifies that each and every package has a valid UNC source directory
that can be reached using test-path.
I also wrote another tool that parsed the entire source software library on the server looking for permissions errors (permissions on the structure set at a directory level rather than inherited), directories that were too long, inaccessible or otherwise
    blocked, nothing was found.
It will take a very long time to go through and check each and every dependency by hand - time I do not have at present.
I looked in the TaskSequenceProvider.log as that is supposed to contain messages from the export process and found the messages in there far too high a level to use

Is there any way of increasing the log verbosity? I need to see what item is causing the export to fail.
Is there another log containing the information about the export & what it is doing?
All out builds that use the task sequence complete successfully, we can edit the sequence fine, make changes etc. so no internal corruption we can find.
    Any ideas?

Torsten, smsprov.log did indeed prove useful, I could see every package as it was validated. Unfortunately the log was wrapping about every 4 minutes and it takes 3+ hours for the task sequence to reach the fail point so I still cannot see the offending
package as it wraps before I can get to the log.
I will increase the size of the log and see if I can maintain some details to investigate.
There was nothing of note in the event logs, certainly nothing leading me to suspect that WMI might be reaching its limits.
I will keep looking for the cause and will post here when I find it <= positive thinking :)

  • Prestage computer name for known/unknown computers in sccm 2012 R2 task sequence

How can we prestage computer name in SCCM 2012 Task Sequence?

Can you be a little more specific about what it is you're trying to do?  Are you looking to create/import the computer record ahead of time and have it utilize that name during OS deployment?

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Task Sequence to Restart Computers

This is a simple question but I cannot seem to get it right.
I am working on Monthly Maintenance plan for my servers and I cannot seem to get it right, any help would greatly appreciate it.
I have Server collections for all OS's (2003, 2008...2012 R2) with maintenance windows for all deployments daily 8PM to 5am.
I have ADRs setup to run and evaluate the last Thursday of the month to install updates on my machines.
I have 4 collections created for Server Reboot 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th with Maintenance Window Monthly for the last Friday/Saturday 8PM - 5AM for Task Sequences Only
I created a Task Sequence called Server Reboot by doing the following:
Create Task Sequence>Custom Task Sequence>Add x86 Boot Image file
In the TS I click Add>General>Restart Computer, Add message "Computer will restart............"
When the Task Sequence runs it does not display the message nor does it reboot the computer, what am I doing wrong?
Basically I want to install updates on the Last Thursday of the month to my servers, Last Friday of the Month through Saturday morning I want to restart the servers to finish applying the updates, etc.
What is the best way to accomplish this? Thanks for any suggestions or help!

I concur with Torsten and narcoticoo -- using a simple package is better.
One thing you noted however is the use of multiple maintenance windows. Maintenance Windows are not in any way specific to just the deployments on the collection where the MW is applied. MWs are applied to the clients in the collection and the client enforces
them on *all* deployments it is assigned. Collections are strictly used by the site to build policies -- which include deployments and MWs among other things but not any collection information. Those policies are then delivered to the clients who enforce them
without regard to collections at all.

  • SCCM 2012: install task sequence to VHD WITHOUT hyper-v being installed?

    Hi,
I'd like to install an OS to a VHD(X) without the need of installing hyper-v on the sccm-server, can that be done?
Not out of the box probably, but I could copy the current task sequence and give an option to choose the installation disk.
That way I could boot on a workstation into winpe, create a vhd, reboot to PXE, choose the specific tasksequence and choose the vhd to install to.
Can it be done and if so how (how to change the ts in order to be able to choose the vhd to install to?).
    Please advise.

Great! Next thing would be to deploy to vhdx then deploy vhdx to pc via ts. The ts would then wipe the disk, make bootpartition and add vdisk via bcdboot. This would give a lot of flexibility in terms of deployment speed (only 1 file to deploy, not that
many reboots)backup (mount vhd to recover data),adding extra os, running clients vhd on hyperv host ... Only issue would be how to add machine specific drivers. Probably this topic has been discussed already. What s your point of view on this?

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Task Sequence Step "Install Package" downloads all content

    Hello,
Task Sequence step "Install Package" I have several packages with multiple programs. When I use one of these packages with one of its programs it appears to download all the package content is there a workaround to stop this
    from happening?
    Regards!

    Hi,
You could change it to run directly from the DP, then it will only use the files it needs and doesn't download anything at all. You will have to make sure that all the content needed by the task seqeunce is copied to the package share otherwise it will not
    work in a task sequence.
The other would be to split up the package in multiple packages if that is possible.
    Regards,

  • SCCM 2012 R2 task sequence: Move a computer object to different OU

    Hi,
We migrate from Windows XP to 7.
During task sequence, we need to be sure the object is moved from one OU to another (XP to Vista OU/policies).
What is the best way to do this?
Could be wrong, but it seems that a default task sequence does not move the object although there is a step which explicitely says to put the computer object in a certain OU ("apply network settings").
    Please advise.
