Score tutorial
Hey-
Any recommendations for a score tutorial?
At present, I write short warmups weekly for my choir (TTBB) and try to produce mini scores (sometimes only a few measures) and apply what I'm reading in notation as well as experimenting etc. I do realize this takes a respectable amount of time, and lucky for me I've got it. I would love to be put through the paces for a while instead searching for the needle in the haystack. Any tips on how you've become proficient in score would be great-
thanks

Thanks Jim
I can always contact Prischl with that question as well, although I suspect the meat of it is there and it is a worthwhile investment. You mentioned that you switched to Logic primarily for the score editor, which leads me to two questions (one from a previous post). First, I notice that some people use different apps. for different things (everyone's got their way). For example, some prefer Finale or Sibelius for their scoring, and will use logic for everything else. I spoken with Logic techs that don't even realize logic can print out a score. Coming from cubase, so far Logic seems to flow fine for me (accepting the usual learning curve). Question 2: What is the best way to control the # of measures across the page? I have several 3 measure long warmups for my TTBB choir, and the first measure ends up huge taking the whole first line, when I would prefer just to have 3 measures across the top first line. I've tweaked maximum bars and spacing in global score settings, tried using the layout tool to manually shift things etc. I've skimmed through "working with notation" and am rereading and taking notes on it now, searched the forums (not as much score info there), but no luck. I have a feeling there is an obvious setting somewhere, but man I'm missing it. let me know if you have any ideas, and thanks for reading this book here...:)

Hi Anyone...
There was supposedly a music notation .pdf, called The Logic Score Tutorial, previously found on the eMagic website (http://www.emagic.de/english/support/download/tutorial.html), which of course no longer exists. The original, I believe, was written by Johannes Prischl of Austria.
I'm wondering if there is presently a link to download this document? For those of us who DO read and write music , this would be a tremendous resource! If any of you know of a link, please let me know.
Thanks a lot in advance for whatever assistnce you can offer.
Take care,
Leon

Can i use the existing examples to test my client?
I am trying to create an web client independent of weblogic in my java app. Since all examples i see say that i have to know how to connect to the server, can i use one of the examples in the tutorials to connect to? For example, can i connect to the Credit Score tutorial under the Web Services? How would that happen?
Hi jmgreen70 ,

Best RegardsHello,
Yes Im using SEM -CPM (release 3.5). I'd like to design the next status and score for a measure.
Status Good: Score interval 0<=x<30
Status Bad: Score interval 30<=x<999
The standard score values is a value between the score interval, so i try to set to status good,standard score 15 and to status bad, standard score 35 and it shows the next message:
"The maximum score must correspond to the best status" and if i set to status good a maximum score, for example 36, the next message appears: "score invalid from score<=standard score<to score".
Thank you -
I have been doing MIDI occasionally since the late 90's, originally with Music Shop. Then I stepped up to a pre Apple version of Logic. I want to do stepped recording with the score editor. My reason is to enter notation from published sheet music so I can play it back and learn to read music in that manner.
My difficulty is when logic adds a rest to the score, I don't know how to remove it, or change the
value. I also plan on recording from MIDI hardware; guitar MIDI pickup MIDI keyboard, and drum machines.
Does anyone know of a good tutorial on this type of use?
Logic v8{quote:title=whoshe wrote:}
the manuals talk about short cut keys but does not specify what the short cuts are, for instance, pg 680, 'Selecting Part Box Objects With Key Commands' The following unassigned key commands....etc part box: 1/1 Note, I don't understand this, what is the key command ?{quote}
greetings and welcome to the Score Editor .. a feature of Logic which like the fax machine, is headed for cobwebs and neglect, judging by the stunning silence of comments on the Logic 9 version.
But if you have the patience to explore the Score Editor, read on for you will find that never has a feature of Logic been shunned by so many and loved by so few.
To answer your question: there is very little direct explanation in the manual of many of the Logic short cut keys. The ones you refer to are 'unassigned' because they are not part of the more obvious standard set of Logic Short cut assignments. So you are free to assign your own Commands to those short cut keys that you might find useful. Selecting Part Box objects by Key Command means using a few key strokes (programmed) to insert an object ie a note which has a value of 1/4 would be a quarter note or 1/8 an eighth note and you could programme a key command to select this this and insert it with a mouse click (tool), if your preferred method of composing is to 'write' the notes in like Sibelius.
As a long time Score Editor user, and also a keyboard player, I prefer a completely different method which is a mixture of playing in real time via a midi key board and quantizing the result, and also step time inserting notes - ie putting the Logic into step time record mode and then pressing the relevant key on the midi keyboard. Then using key commands to pre-select the lenght of the inserted note, or key commands to change the length of an inserted note...
If any of this makes sense and interests you.. then good luck with the Score Editor - Logic's strength is its combination of Score and Midi programming which makes for a certain kind of very fast input once you get familiar with the techniques. So much so that there are a bunch of old hands on this forum ( though they are a dying breed) who have a lot of knowledge about how to do this and a LOT of expertise in producing totally professional scores for orchestras and live recording situations, films scores etc of any kind...
.. all done on the Logic Score Editor. Where others use Finale and Sibelius etc
But because the main focus of Logic 8 and Logic 9 have gone away from the Score Editor ( which has not received any significant bug fixes or new features for many many months) - the message from on high is that nobody really cares about the wealth of user professional knowledge that has grown around the use of the Score Editor over previous versions of Logic .. and a really great feature of the original programme has been left to ...well die.
Fewer and fewer new users of Logic are attracted to taking the time to learn how to use the Score Editor ...especially because it is now virtually unsupported by the company that owns it.
Anyone wishing to continue to use it has to digest this painful fact and decide whether he/she wants to get a life of hanging out in a couple of friendly forums to hook up with a dwindling number of users who know how to deal with the Score Editor and get round enfuriating bugs and idiosyncrasies which will never be resolved.
.. actually its not a bad life... and there are few people around who make it all worthwhile ;

How to create Live Soccer/Basketball score templates in Premiere Pro CS 5.5 ?
I have a video about a sport competition. You know, we all see these templates in TV/NET as a info table. It upgrades as score changes. I know it is easy to create it in After Effects. But I want to do it in Premiere Pro CS 5.5. I heard that we can create the template in Photoshop and put it in Premiere. If yes, how ? Is there any tutorial about it ?
Additionally, I want score to change it by time pass. I can do it manually if there is no way...

Hey,
I've read literally every single timer.delay tutorial I could find online, on youtube, the official documentation, tons of posts on this forum, etc. What I am trying to say is I looked everywhere before posting for help.
I have a timer running. It runs throughout the game. I need to modify the speed of that timer when a player either hits a certain second(won't work, because the timer is already running) or when someone gets a certain score(can't get it to work, because timer is running).... so my question is how do I get timer.delay to work when the timer is running throughout the entire game. I tried to control the delay by when someone gets a point, but that didn't work either. I am using a trace statement so I see the seconds and the timer speed. the code looks something like
randomvariable = new Timer(2000,8);
timer.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, loop);
timer.start();
function loop
// my looping code here
What I posted is psuedo code.
Any ideas on how to make the timer go faster without delay, since I can't get delay to work under the circumstances I explained? Or is there a work around that I don't know about? I will try to give back to the forums by answering other questions. Oh, I am running this on the timeline, not in a .as file. Thanks so much for your help!That's what I thought. I thought if I set a delay inside the function or in an if statement for the var that prints out the timer decrease that it would work. It doesn't. I'm using Adobe AIR for IOS, but I doubt that makes a difference in this case. I write timer.delay=500; that should make the timer go at 500 milliseconds. My trace shows the amount of milliseconds didn't change throughout the application. It is quite bothersome, since everything else works and every guide and the docs say what I am doing should work. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hello everyone,
I know this is a subject that gets covered a lot as i have found a ton of tutorials that show a million dfferent ways to create a high scores board on a flash game. So i decided to go out on a limb and pick a tutorial out to try. Well I have now tried 3 different ones and have yet to get a working high scores board with my game.
http://www.flashkit.com/tutorials/Games/How_to_c-Nick_Kuh-771/index.php
That is the link to the most recent attempts to creat my high scores board. When i finished everything the way the tutorial said it seemed like everything would work and then it just didnt. After spending oh about 40 plus hours trying to make a high scores board i am getting very frustrated. My game is scripted in AS2 and i have access to mysql and can set up unlimited databases.
Can anyone please help me by sending an easy to follow tutorial that will work with AS2? I would just like any kind of help right now as I feel ALL of my valid ideas have been ehausted. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!
kapelskicOkay not a problem.
This is my code on the very first frame of the game that initializes the the highscores.php script
command = "init";
_root.loadVariables("highscores.php?"+int(Math.random()*100000), "POST");
This is the code that I have on a submit button, next to the input text box where the user enters their name for the scoreboard.
on (release) {
if(name ne ""){
command = "update";
_root.loadVariables("highscores.php?"+int(Math.random()*100000), "POST");
gotoAndStop ("highScores");
In every place the code says _root. I have also tried this. and neither of them work. I have also tried a million other things. So far the game plays through, goes to the game over screen where it asks for a user name and tells them their score. Then once they press submit the game goes to the highScores screen but the name and score are not there. The high scores screen cosists of 2 dynamic text fields one named "players" and one named "scores". I hope this helps because I spent another 5 or so hours after my initial posts trying more tutorials with still no luck. (the problem i am having is that i am new to flash, however not to PHP)

Quiz Score in Slide Presentation
Hi All,
I have prepared a short tutorial in slide presentation format
with 20 questions at the end, and I'm trying to get the quiz score
(using Flash with AICC tracking) displayed on the last slide but I
haven't been successful so far. I am using slide template in Flash
Professional 8, and I followed the instructions in Flash help menu
including copying all the required files onto my server, but I'm
still having problem with reporting the quiz score.. The only thing
I don't understand very well in the instruction found on the help
menu is "start the LMS system (or create the AICC Course Descriptor
Files) that references the frameset.htm file."
I would appreciate if anybody could provide me with
information on where to get help on this. Maybe there is a tutorial
somewhere I am not aware of.

Only Last Quiz Score Saved?
I am a new Captivate user but a very experienced Authorware
user. I have created a quiz in my Captivate course which is
launched through our Learn.com LMS. I notice that each time I take
the quiz, it overwrites my last quiz score. Is there a way in
Captivate to only allow users to take a quiz one time? Or is there
a way to find out the score for every Captivate session?
Interestingly, I notice that each time I take the quiz, the summary
page says I've only accessed it one time. Any comments or
suggestions to help with this would be greatly appreciated.Andrew,
Hello! It's me, Carol Paquette (cjp717). I finally got my
Captivate to work correctly with my Learn.com LMS! As it turns out,
because we have SSL encryption on our LMS, they had to unsecure the
page that launched Captivate in our LMS registry settings. I am
packaging for SCORM 2004 - Flash 8. Yes, recording is now working
like a charm but only the last quiz score is saved.
I looked for the resume option in Captivate but can't locate
it. I can tell you this - the user always starts at the beginning
of the tutorial.
I also ran several reports from my LMS hoping that I could
generate records from all the session taken but the LMS must be
keeping just one user record and always rewriting the latest score
in the score field. -
Change movieClip color or size based on player score
Hello Everyone,
My students and I worked throught a nice tutorial on a basic pong game that keeps score (http://as3gametuts.com/2011/03/19/pong-1/). But now we are trying to figure out how to modify a movieclip's color and/or size based on the score. This idea was suggested by one of my students, the tutorial does not provide instructions for the color and/or size change so I figured I'd ask for help here.
The symbol we want to change is named "paddle" with the instance name of "playerPaddle" and we want to change it based on the value of a var named "playerScore".
Thanks for your help and have a great day,
ToddNed,
Thanks for the reply.
I want to reduce the playerPaddle by 20% when the playerScore reaches 5.
also
I want to change the playerPaddle color to red when the playerScore reaches 2.

I'm working on a marathon runner game ( http://www.locopuyo.com/MarathonRunnerBeta1.zip ) just for the fun of it. What I am wondering is what the best way to make a high scores list would be.
I have mySQL on my server, I don't know if that is the best way to do it though.
I don't know at all how to connect files on the internet with java.
I was thinking it might be easier if I just had a plain html web site that I could edit in my java program using ftp, but I don't know how to do that and dont' even know if it is possible.
Any help would be much appretiated.since you have MySQL on your server, I'm going to go ahead and assume you have PHP installed also. If so, you can do the highscore work in PHP and just have the game query that script. Basically (if you know anything about PHP and web queries in general) you just query the URL of the PHP script with a few GETVARS. In the simplest (and most easily hacked) way is something like:
http://yourserver.com/game/highscore.php?action=submit&name=bob&score=5000highscore.php (your script) would then use MySQL to store the data of the GETVARS ($action,$name, and $score).
All you need in Java to query this script is the URL class.
URL url = new URL("http://yourserver.com/game/highscore.php?action=submit&name=bob&score=5000");
url.openConnection(); // this is where it is queriedhighscore.php is where you need to do your database work. If you don't know anything about PHP or if this sounds too easily hacked, you might look into connecting to MySQL via JDBC (see tutorial)
If I find the time I can make a simple template for you to build off of -

Hard drive size and its effect on battery life
