Screen brightness not adjustable

the brightness control donot work

Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP 15-r014tx Notebook and issues with not being able to adjust the brightness levels. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system  that might need updating. As this could cause the slider Brightness bar missing from the Notebook. If that does not help try in the Device Manager.Select the Display Adapters in the list on the center of your screen.
Right click on the driver and select the option to update the drivers. Restart the Notebook and check the option control. I hope something here helps you out. Thanks.

I have followed nearly every thread on this topic, and downloaded every driver, file and update I could find.  I still can't dim the screen brightness on my Win 7 (32 bit) machine.
If someone can point me in the directions of some CLEAR instructions, I would be most grateful.

  • Screen brightness not changing after update to windows 10

Hello, After updating to windows 10, I am no longer able to adjust the screen brightness at all.  It is stuck on the brightest setting at all times; which is inconvenient when I am on battery power and need it dimmed. The f2 and f3 buttons are not working to adjust the brightness, and I am unable to change it in power/power plan settings. I attempted to search for a possible missing driver that I had maybe lost upon updating, but there are yet no drivers for my product on the HP website for this purpose. Any help on this matter is extremely appreciated, as it is rather frustrating that I can't change my screen brightness. Thanks.

How about using the snipping tool to create an image of what you do see and posting it here.  The snipping tool is what I used to create the image that I posted.  What version of Windows 10 is installed?  I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro on the Omen 15 and have the Enterprise version on one of my desktop systems. I have not yet used the HOme or Education versions, so I do not yet know which features they lack.

  • Screen brightness not working after updating windows 10

My Lenovo g50-70 laptop screen brightness button not working and I also not able to adjust brightness of my laptop.it is fixed at maximum level after updating windows 10. Find a solution for this problem.

I have the same problem with my HP Pavilion 17-e073ed notebook. As far as I can tell everything seems to be working again BUT the brightness function keys.
I tried downloading a few of the quick key drivers but they're still not working.

  • Brightness not adjustable in Windows 8.1 Sony Vaio (formerly sleep issue)

AAAAAARGH. Whenever I hear the word VAIO my blood pressure rises. Model: VPCYB13KX/P (P=Pink) but the problem seems to be a universal oneMajor problems: cannot change brightness at all, closing the lid puts computer in non-responsive but 100% CPU state (judging by the CPU cooler fan turning on to max and enough heat radiating from the base of the laptop to fry an egg)OS: Windows 8.1 upgraded from a clean install of Windows 8 64 bit So, in my case I clean installed Windows 8 followed by 8.1. Vaio "care" (if that's what you want to call it) and all the ancillary junk was installed as well (much of it removed in trouble shooting). Before I did trouble shooting I had four major problems:1 FN keys (F5/F6) did not adjust brightness at all (still broken, and officially broken for the VPCYB series according to http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-info.pl?info_id=1380)2 FN keys (F3/F4) did not adjust sound (fixed, not sure when)3 Brightness could not be changed AT ALL (broken, fixed and now broken again by solution to sleep problem)4 Closing the laptop's lid would cause the computer to go into a "frozen" but active state out of which it couldn't be woken up (fixed by steps at end of post)5 Complaint during boot about missing file (see http://community.sony.com/t5/Windows-8/iolorgdf32-program-can-not-be-found-Skipping-Autocheck/td-p/161333 for someone else's description of problem) (not fixed; not bothered to try... seems like a minor problem compared to everything else)6 mf110u DLL missing dialogue box upon startup (see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_update/mfc110udll-missing-windows-8-pro-updates-wont/9596536f-a405-4b1e-b8cf-b06e28b7fea4?msgId=28e1af2b-d536-4258-aea2-a1155cc6464b) (fixed) Re: 3 brightness. Before the sleep fix (billed as a brightness fix) was applied I was able to adjust brightness using the Windows brightness controls (one in the new interface and one in the desktop/traditional interface). Now I can't. Re: 5 and 6 My guess is that #5 and #6 have to do with the Vaio Care software (which seems to be someone else's software repackaged?). This laptop has been a support headache from day one, even under the 'clean' OEM Windows 7 Home Premium with Vaio drivers and software being the culprits 95% of the time (terrible QAQC). Until very recently I had problems with the wifi cutting out daily in Windows 7 Home Premium (only fixed when I clean installed Ultimate and used non-Sony driver for wifi... I should've stuck with 7 Ultimate and not boethered with 8). What others have been told would correct their brightness problem fixed my sleep problem (I can close the lid now) but it broke my brightness adjustment ability. I'm now stuck at 100% no matter what I do. PS These are the instructions for how to fix the brightness problem (and, to reiterate, it broke my brightness solution but fixed my sleep problem): 1.Launch Task Manager
    2.Terminate two tasks
    •esrv.exe
    •esrv_svc.exe
    3.Delete “sony_acpi_battery_input.dll” Under “C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Care\ESRV\sony_acpi_battery_input.dll”
4.Restart PC So, if anyone has a suggestion about how to get brightness working without breaking sleep please let me know. If I don't have any success fixing this I'm simply going to downgrade the laptop to Windows 7 Ultimate again and transfer my Windows 8 licence to my home built desktop machine (I was going to pick up a second licence but maybe I won't bother since I'll only need one).

I did try that IIRC but no luck. I've simply given up and gone back to Windows 7 because I don't have the luxury of devoting time to re-installing software when I've got toddlers screaming for my attention and work taking up the rest of my time. I haven't installed a single piece of Sony software on my Windows 7 install and so far only two things were not working: brightness control and a broken wifi driver. I fixed the driver (Sony doesn't provide a fix for the faulty wifi driver for the VPCYB13KX, nor does Microsoft) by installing a driver from the web (care of Atheros.cz). And, i haven't bothered to go after the brightness control because it's not as pressing an issue as the faulty wifi driver. Plus, I don't have any of the Sony bloatware slowing things down (installing an SSD at the same time may have had something to do with the speed up ;-). Plus, in many ways going back to Windows 7  simplifies my life big time since it is a computer that's being used by two people and Windows 8.1 makes accomodating the work flow of two separate people in one account difficult. Tangent... And, it means that at least one computer isn't subject to the prying eyes of Microsoft Live. I am becoming really leery of the amount of information that private companies (which means there is zero transparency) are able to collect and sell about private individuals through Windows 8.1, Mac OS X 10.9 and Google OS. If you happen to allow the wrong settings these OSes are able to track and store phenomenal levels of personal information (which police would never be able to find out about you without a warrant, let alone store in perpetuity). And, who knows if these OSes even honour your opt-outs. Or, if through coding errors they still continue to collect the data anyway.

  • [SOLVED] ASUS Screen Brightness Not Working

I have been trying for a few hours to get my screen brightness to work properly. I'm on an ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A with kernel 3.9.6-1. I'm using efibootmgr to boot.
According to the wiki page and numerous posts, I need to use the acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" boot parameter. When I set it using efibootmgr, the keyboard backlight keys work (Fn+F[34]), but the screen brightness keys (Fn+F[56]) do not work. I have tried the following in efibootmgr:
    # efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi=Linux add_efi_memmap
    # efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi=intel add_efi_memmap
    # efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi= add_efi_memmap
and a few others. The particularly peculiar thing is when I use a UEFI shell to boot with my script:
    echo -on
    \EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap efi_no_storage_paranoia initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img elevator=noop acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"
it works fine (both keyboard backlight and screen brightness).
What am I doing wrong? My hunch is that I'm doing something wrong with the formatting of acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" but I'm pretty sure I've tried every combination of different quotes and escaping different things. It's also worth nothing that the "!" gets interpreted by bash in some of these permutations making efibootmgr not actually run.

    WonderWoofy wrote:
Because you are entering it in a shell, you need to escape some of the things in the acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" string.  So for example, the double quotes are intended to be entered exactly as is in the resulting efibootmgr entry, so these should be esacped since they would otherwise have a special meaning in the command line.  The same is true for the exclamation point.  So I think you would have to do:
    efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u "initrd=/EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi=\"\!Windows 2012\" add_efi_memmap"
BTW, this is just a copy/paste of one of the entries above (slightly fixed).  I added a '/' to your initrd entry, as it is supposed to be an absolute path, not a relative one.
Edit: I too started out with a direct efibootmgr entry when getting to know UEFI.  But I think that a better solution is to use a boot manager.  I like gummiboot, but I also keep rEFInd set up as well.  By doing this, if you ever want to chane something on your kernel command line, you can just edit the config before reboot.  But I think that were it is really useful is if you need to modify the kernel command line before you boot, as it is not possible with a direct efibootmgr entry.  If you want to make it seem seamless, just set the timeout to zero in efibootmgr, and then if you want to get to the menu, you just hold the spacebar while booting.
The reason I wanted to use a direct efibootmgr entry was because I thought it would be faster.  But because gummiboot and systemd will actually give you the time it takes to boot which includes the time in the firmware (POST) as well as the time it takes to get through the boot manager, I have actually found that my system takes a whole 14ms from the end of POST to starting to load the kernel.
Edit2: BTW, I also quoted the entire srting of arguments on the kernel command line, which it need in order to be fed to the '-u' option as a single string.
I'm afraid that still doesn't work. I've tried similar things and tried that specifically.  In case you're wondering, the command you listed gives me the following output:
    $ sudo efibootmgr -v
    BootCurrent: 0000
    Timeout: 2 seconds
    BootOrder: 0000
    Boot0000* Arch Linux HD(1,800,96000,bee2185e-de97-4dc0-9614-830639991bc3)File(\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi)i.n.i.t.r.d.=./.E.F.I./.a.r.c.h./.i.n.i.t.r.a.m.f.s.-.a.r.c.h...i.m.g. .r.o.o.t.=.U.U.I.D.=.d.0.b.3.2.0.8.0.-.8.4.f.0.-.4.c.6.b.-.9.3.3.b.-.f.6.2.b.8.8.0.a.f.c.0.9. .r.o. .r.o.o.t.f.s.t.y.p.e.=.e.x.t.4. .e.f.i._.n.o._.s.t.o.r.a.g.e._.p.a.r.a.n.o.i.a. .e.l.e.v.a.t.o.r.=.n.o.o.p. .a.c.p.i._.o.s.i.=.".\.!.W.i.n.d.o.w.s. .2.0.1.2.". .a.d.d._.e.f.i._.m.e.m.m.a.p...
I also tried putting the -u argument in single quotes so that I don't have to escape the double quotes or the !. That also didn't work. Thanks for your suggestions, I'd be happy to try more, I've tried a lot already to no avail :-(
count0 wrote:On my Asus X201E, the screen brightness keys only work when I add "acpi_osi=" to my kernel parameters, with no arguments. You could try that.
That's the third option I say that I tried in my original post.

  • Screen brightness not changing

I recently formatted my system with windows 8 64-bit and after installing all the drivers, my screen brightness doesnt change

    Hi GregA_154,
Try reinstalling your graphics drivers from your ProBook 4540s driver page.  If that doesn't work then you have two options.  You can try the Commercial Notebook forum because your model is a commercial product to see if anyone there has anything additional for you to try.  The second option would be to contact HP.  You can contact HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or start here if you live outside of North America.

  • 2 year old 30" Cinama HD Apple display, brightness not adjusting properly..

My monitor has been off for about a week and a half and now this morning it is dark and the brightness control won't stay up where it should be, it keeps sliding back down. Anyone experience this before? What should I do? The screen is so dark...

Working now, guess it just needed to warm up after the long holiday break.

  • My 2009 iMac is making a very loud, rapid pulsating electronic noise. It stops temporarily after adjusting the screen brightness or using certain apps. But it always returns

My 2009 iMac is making a very loud noise. It sounds like a rapid, pulsating electronic noise. It stops when the screen brightness is adjusted or when using certain apps. But it always returns and is getting louder. The unit was shut down for 4 months and the house temperature was set to 5C. It was powered up 2 weeks ago and ran fine for a while. Then in the last 5 or 6 days the problem started. 5 days ago I did watch a bike race for 3 or 4 hours from a quasi legal stream. I am not tech savvy. Just very confused as I've had a trouble free run so far. Ditto with my iphone5.

I would recommend taking it in immediately to your local Apple Store or AASP to be loooked at by an Apple Genius. I suspect you made a goof somewhere but diagnosing noises without seeing it is really difficult.

  • Bootcamp win7 secondary screen brightness

    Hi,
I have a macBook pro with bootcamp (win7-64) and a secondary screen connected trough the hdmi. The brightness of the secondary screen changes constantly, seems related with the content of the same screen. For example, if i have opened a photo, wich is mainly dark, and I maximize a program like Word, which is mainly white, the brightness changes a lot. this problem doesn't happen in laptop screen.
The win7 brightness control seems to affect the laptop screen only.
How to disable this annoying secondary screen brightness auto adjust?
    Thanks

    hi evre
power management may cause that issue due to the application contains the system files that fn keys work.
can you try to un-install > restart your computer > re-install the power management first? if you can, please un-install power management in safe mode.

  • Have Upgrade Graphic Card Driver, But Still Cannot Adjust Screen Brightness and Sleep Button Not Showing After Clean Installation of Windows 8.1

I have done clean installation of Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion G4.
Then I realize that I cannot put my computer on sleep mode and cannot adjust screen brightness.
I understand that those problems caused by the graphic card driver.
My computer is running on AMD Radeon HD 6400 series.
Thus, I manually search on internet and found a latest graphic card update on microsoft site that is claimed compatible on windows 8.1 (link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn344644.aspx).
I've upgraded it into the latest one. I've check on Device Manager, the driver is running well.
But my problem did not solved!
    Please give me the solution!

    Hi,
How about go to Device Manager, then uninstall Graphic driver and restart your computer, system will install its build in graphic drver. You can have a try.
In addition, access to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Brightness and set its value to 100 for test.
