Script that moves items to trash after importing to iTunes
Hi,
I have zero experience in this, all I have done is just from having googled stuff, so please be patient if I'm asking stupid questions. I have tried searching the forum first but I can't find the answer to this question.
I download music from various (LEGAL) websites and I don't want to have to manually move it into iTunes. My aim is that every time an .mp3 file is downloaded into my downloads folder, it is automatically moved into my iTunes music library and added to a 'downloaded' playlist, then deleted from my downloads folder.
This has taken me ages because after I got it working I did an iTunes update which ruined it all. I tried to edit the offending actions but ended up just downgrading iTunes to the previous version via Time Machine.
I am using OS X version 10.6.7 and iTunes 10.2.1
The point I am at now is that it is all working, except that the files are not moved to the trash at the end, so every time it runs it adds the new file plus all the previous files again. Please can someone help me modify my script or my automator application so that this will happen.
Also, is it possible to have the automator application only run when music files are downloaded? Because at the moment it runs every time I download anything at all.
Here is what I have done:
I have set up a folder action so that this script is attached to my downloads folder:
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
tell me
do shell script "open -a /Users/Louisa/Documents/Workflows/justdownloadstoplaylist.app"
end tell
end adding folder items to
Then I have saved this Automator workflow as the application justdownloadstoplaylist.app
*Get specified Finder items*
Louisa>Downloads
*Get Folder Contents*
(Repeat for each subfolder found)
*Import Files into Itunes*
(Existing playlist - "downloaded")
*Move Finder items to Trash*
Thank you for your help.
Sorry, there was an error with my workflow in that saving to the variable should have come after filtering the items:
Folder Action receives files and folders added to Downloads
Get Folder Contents { Repeat for each subfolder found } -- in case a folder was added
Filter Finder Items { File extension is mp3 } -- just get mp3 files
Set Value of Variable { Variable: Original Items } -- save the filtered mp3 files for later
Import Files into iTunes { Existing playlist Downloaded }
Get Value of Variable { Variable: Original Items } (Ignore Input) -- get back the mp3 files
Move Finder Items to Trash
If you are using your application in a situation where it is already getting items passed to it (e.g. dropping items onto the application, or using a Service or Folder Action), adding an action at the beginning that gets the same items will result in doubling up the items in your input list. If you are getting confused about what is getting passed to your application, you can use a Choose from List action at the beginning of your workflow to show the items.
If you just saved your workflow as an application, dropping items onto it will pass them to your workflow, otherwise you will need to add statements to your folder action script to tell the workflow to open items passed to the folder action. As I mentioned in my earlier post, you won't need to use your folder action script or do anything else to get items passed to your workflow if it is created using the Folder Action template.

I'm using a Canon HV20 video camera that uses digital tape. After importing to my Events Library in Final Cut X, there are some timecode breaks between clips resulting also in gaps between the clips. Is there a way to avoid this?
Thanks Russ. I'm a beginner but Lynda.com has a video on making an archive, so I'll follow her video to try this method.

Finding items in trash after it has been emptied
2 years ago when i bought my Mac I copied photos from my old PC to the Mac using a portable hard drive. I discarded the Pc and have used the Mac Happily ever since.
Today i discovered that all my photos dating back to before i got my Mac disappeared... They still show up in iPhoto, but when I click on them iPhot tells me it cannot find the original file...
I examined the iPhoto database and searched my hard drive and indeed it contains only thumbnails and instead of the original a thumbnail and an alias. The alias points to the original that was in my trash..
3 weeks ago I emptied my trash file for the first time. (it was 50G- I was surprised that it had never been emptied but it was taking up a lot of space) So it seems that several years of photos were deleted when I emptied the trash. It is of course bizarre that iPhoto was point to photos in the trash... (the path the alias indicates is Users/me/.Trash/ )
I have been making back-ups on 2 separate portable hard drives using Time Machine. But when I go into Time Machine I cannot locate the trash. An Internet search indicates that indeed TM des not back up Trash... is this true? I cannot go back to the folders before the photos ended up in the trash-most likely this happened before i ever installed time machine, back when I set up the Mac.
Is there anything I can do to get my pictures back? Are they still on my hard drive and is there a way to retrieve them even if trash has been emptied?Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news however they're probably gone. About the only thing I can think of is a data recovery service however this will be extremely expensive.
This won't help on this situation but you may find it extremely useful in the future. That is doing redundant backups. Time Machine is great but has a limitation in that it can't boot your system and as you know won't backup what is in the Trash. However if you get a second external HD (don't use your TM DRIVE!!!!!!) in addition to TM you can create a bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. These backups will clone your internal HD completely and will also be bootable in the event the internal HD crashes. Many of us use both backup tools for many reasons. In the event one backup fails for whatever reason in most cases you can fully recover. Had you had a Bootable Clone AND caught the issue soon enough you could have moved the photos that you have inadvertently placed in the trash back to your internal HD and you wouldn't have lost your pictures. There are many other scenarios where this can be helpful. For the cost of an internal HD (probably well under $100) you would have a solution.
Best of luck,

So if I have a file on the desktop and I delete it, it makes the 'throwing it in the trash' sound but the trash can icon stays empty (if I don't already have something there) until I click on trash, and the file still appears to be on my desktop until I click the trash. If, after I've moved something to the trash, I then drag the file that seems to still be there around the desktop and drop it somewhere randomly, the file moves itself from the trash back onto the desktop! Can anyone help?
Thanks, DanWelcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have Time Machine setup to backup your hard drive? If so you can use it to recover the files.
If not you will need to use a file recovery application like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage. It lets you run the application to check the drive for files that can be recovered before having to purchase it. There are other similar applications out there also. You can go to VersionTracker.com and search for "file recovery" to get other possible apps.
There are recovery services that can do the job for you. They are pretty expensive but if you can't get the recovery application to work they are another option.
Try to use the computer as little as possible beforehand so you don't run the risk of overwriting the deleted files.

Raw files that suddenly don't work after importing
All of a sudden This happens: when I import my Raw files from my OM-D EM-5 to Aperture 3.5.1 I get the error message "Unsupported image format"! I have not changed anything and this makes my use of Aperture very diffecult! I have to first import the raw files into IPhoto - this works ok and then import the jpeg's into Aperture - I have reinstalled Aperture and this still happens - so now Aperture is allmost useless to me. Please help I work with loads of pics daily and will have to swich to another program if this is the end of Aperture - I have also installed Mavericks and my guess is that the problem lies there :-(
I don't know if there is a connection between this and Color Efx Pro that I also use

Iphone 5s - IBM Notes Traveler 9.01 -Unable to move messages to trash after a few hours
I have a problem with one of my Iphone 5s users. Everything was working with his IPhone 4S, but the phone died and so they replaced it with a 5S
We are using an IBM Lotus Notes 9.01 Server (latest FP patch) and Traveler 9.01 FP4 with the iphone 5 s.
On his Iphone 5S we install Notes Traveler... Everything works on it, but after a few hours we not able to delete messages on the IPhone. When he clicks Delete on a message on his Iphone, it comes back saying it is "Unable to Move the message"
If I remove Traveler and reinstall it, he can delete the messages for a few minutes or even a few hours, but then it comes back and says it cannot move the messages when we try to delete the email on the Iphone 5S. The Iphone had 7.1.1 OS... I updated it to latest Apple 7.1.2 OS on it.. Same problem. We also have an AOL account on the Iphone ....that works fine... All other Traveler users on Iphones 4S or 5S users are working Fine...
I had IBM look at it. They did some testing and the email deletions only appeared on the logs when it synchronized to Traveler, but when the problem occurs... it never did show anything in the Notes logs, about the Delete request. They are saying it is an Apple problem.
I even reset his IPhone 5 S to factory defaults and re-setup Notes Traveler and after a few minutes or a few hours... When he deletes a email he gets the Cannot move the messages again. I opened a bug report with Apple by never heard back from them. All other functions of the email work.. He can send and receive emails... He just cannot delete after a few hours. I ran checks on he email database and everything comes up OK...That's odd. You will probably have to contact Apple support on this one. I'm not sure if their is a problem with your account or a server glitch at their end but in either case, they will probably have to look into it for you. You can reach them here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.

Hi,
I have moved items to my trash however they are not registering in my trash and I therefore cannot delete them.
My Mac is almost full and so any help on this is gratefully received.
Many thanksMillicentmac,
would you flesh out “almost full” above? That is, what size internal disk do you have, and how much free space remaining do you have? -
Lion asking for password when I drag an item to trash after and update
I have a Macbook Pro, I upgraded to Lion 3 weeks ago. Yesterday it had an update that took about 1.5 hours. Now, when I drag something in the trash, it asks for my computer password. I don't want to give that to the other person sharing this computer. And, I don't really want to set up another user. It worked until yesterday. Anyone know what is wrong?

Unable to move item into trash
This message could not be moved to the mailbox trash- i get thus error whenever i try and delee my emails. I cant see any settings bu i have obviosly missed somethin somewhere
Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then select the account on the right-hand side of that screen, select Account, then Advanced, Deleted Mailbox, and under On The Server tap the 'Trash' folder so that it gets a tick against it - then come out of that series of popups by tapping on the relevant buttons at the top of them and then see if you can delete emails.

I upgraded my Macbook to the new Mavericks OS and also updated iTunes to the newest version 11.1.2 on Wednesday. Since then I have been unable to view any of my purchased music on the iTunes Store. The purchased page comes up blank. However I am able to view it the purchased music via the iTunes Store link on my iPod Touch and iPad.
I'm also unable to download the movies and TV shows that I purchased on iTunes on my computer. They show up under purchased but they do not have the cloud icon on them for me to download. When I click on them it takes me to the page to purchase them again. However when I view them on my iPod and iPad they have the cloud link so that I can download them without having to pay for them.
Is anyone else having these issues since downloading Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.2? I tried downloading some of the purchased music to my iPod and syncing with my computer but after 4 hours of the spinning wheel I gave up on trying to sync my iPod.Found a solution from the Apple Support Team. The link below will tell you what to do to get your cloud content to show up in your library so that you can download it.

Just scroll down the Mac and PC section and choose the version of iTunes you have and it will provided step by step instructions. Worked for me! -
After import to iTunes 11.1, audio file plays -6db quieter - sound check off
when importing any .aiff into my MBP running 10.8.5, any sound file plays correctly when played via Quicktime Pro or using the 10.8 (spacebar) preview function.
When imported into the new iTunes 11.1 application, sounds play (I would roughly estimate) -6db quieter than when not played via this app.
Sound Check / Sound Enhancer functions are NOT on....
Anybody else experience this glitch / know the reason why ?I'm having the same exact experience. It worked fine up until the 11.1 update, and then it just ceased to work.
I used to get a pop up window saying initializing or something of that sort, then if the video wasn't the right encoding, it would stop. If it was the right encoding, the video would then move to the top center of ribbon with a progress bar for the import. I've tried drag and drop, and also going to File -> Add File to Library. Neither methods work. I've even tried adding an entire folder to the library, and still nothing.
Is this an intentional act on behalf of Apple or a bug? -
Had my computer serviced recently and had to reinstall itunes. Now its saying I have two accounts. How can I switch to my original account where all my music that I imported is and get rid of the new one that only shows my purchased music?

Tenth CD in Set is Displayed Above the Ninth CD, After Import to iTunes
Not a major issue, but I just received a ten cd box set for Christmas. When I import it to iTunes, the ninth cd's content is listed BELOW/AFTER the tenth cd's content. All of the disks were/are correctly numbered. How do I get the last two in the correct order?
Both disc number and total disc number are correct?
The album label is identical for all?
Nothing different in the album artist label or artist label? -
Movie won't play after renaming in iTunes and on iPod if iTunes crashes
So new MacBook Pro, new 80 5G iPod. All up to date.
I can rename my movies files with about 80% success, 20% of the time I get the spinning beach ball of death. iTunes hangs and I force quite (probably a bad idea) now the files, either on the iPOD or in my library, are unplayable. If I try to open them in Quicktime (Pro) it says there was an "Error opening File, the Movie could not be played"
It looks to me like iTunes is corrupting the file when it tries to rename the file. Any one experience this as well or know how to fix the files? I've tried fixing permissions and repairing the disk in Disk Utility.
Thanks.... MacBook Pro 15" 10.4.9 - iTunes v7.1.1 - 3Gig Ram, 90 Gig free on HD....
MacBook Pro 15" Mac OS X (10.4.9) All up to dateSo for anyone who happens upon this...
I've noted that the beach ball clears if I wait for 1 hour.
I've also noted that it is much faster to rename the movie files themselves in the finder, the next time I play the movie in iTunes the name changes.
I've noticed several other messages about the spinning beachball of death. In case anyone is wondering don't force quit iTunes least you corrupt the file.
