Scripting a network connection?

Hi,
I'm looking to run a bash script on my laptop whenever I connect to certain wifi access points (and, if possible, to a specific Ethernet connection).
Is there any way to do this in OS X, and if so, how?
Thanks,
Alex Lowe

  • Java scripts "network connection was lost" error ???

Hello... I think I have a problem with Java.... I can't click certain links on pages, or watch vids on Hulu (the vid doesn't even load & no play button). At the bottom of Safari there is a message "# errors occurred in opening this page..." so I follow the directions and go to Window->Activity, and all of the error messages say "The network connection was lost" next to all of the addresses ending in .js (which I think is java script, lol I don't even know) I've been to a site to check to see if Java is working, and it says it's working, and its enabled in my preferences. I've also tried Firefox, Camino, & Flock and still have the same problems. Anyone know how to fix this???

    Hi,
*"I've also tried Firefox, Camino, & Flock and still have the same problems."*
Since the issue effects all the browsers....
Hulu requires the Flash Player plugin. You might benefit from uninstalling your current version then reinstall a new copy.
    Uninstall Flash
    Install Flash
Then From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. *Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
If you still have problems with Safari, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • How do I connect my Centro to the Internet via bluetooth over PC's Internet? Where is Centro's PPP Connection Type? How do I setup Login Script for bluetooth connection?

I am trying to set up bluetooth on the Centro to connect to the internet via my PC's internet.
    HotSync over bluetooth works successfully.
Computer specs: Toshiba P205-S6277; Bluetooth Stack v5.10.04 (currently using); Bluetooth Monitor v3.01 (to use Vista's built-in bluetooth)
I think I have narrowed my problem down to 3 things.
    (1) Finding Network Access properties (to allow connected devices to access the internet)
    (2) Finding Centro's Network Connection Type: PPP
    (3) Finding the correct Login Script to use
for (1) I think I've looked everywhere; found nothing on Network Access.
Checked control panel: only Bluetooth Local COM
Right-clicked bluetooth icon > Settings: File transfer, PAN Networking, PAN DHCP server, AV controls. Other bluetooth settings are for file transfer or object push. I don't see anything like this.
I'm stumped on (2). It seems as if palm removed this option under Centro's Advanced network settings .
Nearly all the forums that I read says to choose Connection Type: PPP.
    (3) Found 2 scripts that seemed would work. I don't know how it exactly works but it sounds workable.
    First script:
    Send: CLIENT
    Send: CLIENT
    Wait for: CLIENTSERVER
    End:
    Script 1 Connect Log:
    =======================================
    Connect Log
    S: client
    S: client
    R:
    Err: 0x121F   <<<netErrUserCancel b/c I canceled it.
    Not connected
    ========================================
I canceled it because the process would stay on "Signing In" then it automatically "Canceled" itself.
    Second script:
    Send CR:
    Delay: 1
    Send: CLIENT
    Wait For: CLIENTSERVER
    End
**UPDATE** I found on this forum (Reply # 3689) that the script is needed only if you are using Palm OS 4 or under. Centro uses Palm OS 5.49121. Can anyone support this?
Even without the script it has problems "Signing In".
I'm currently reading this site and trying out its decribed methods. I will update this thread when I get the results.
I'm using the Centro. And If anyone's been able to successfully connect to the internet on the Centro via a bluetooth connection to the PC WITHOUT 3rd party applications, please share.  If not, please share any ideas.
    Thanks!

I've been going at this for days, and have probably exhausted all the proposed solutions on the first 3 pages of various google searches. I'm getting the feeling that Vista users are pretty much SOL for the time being.
For the record, I just tried out a few of the solutions (mRouter & SoftickPPP) on XP and they work perfectly.

  • Error: Network Connection Timed Out

I am beyond ****** off at the moment. My iTunes was working perfectly until two weeks ago, and now it insists my Network Connection Timed Out when I try to access the store or update podcasts.
It can't be my internet connection, because as you can see, I'm able to access the internet. For some reason it's this specific copy of iTunes (7.5), because the iT7 downstairs works perfectly. Of course, since Apple are so fecking stingy, I can't add a few files from there without wiping everything off my iPod.
    So here's the run-down:
I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8600, Windows XP, browsing with Firefox and attempting to load the latest podcasts onto my iPod Shuffle. I don't give a toss about downloading songs, I just want to update my podcasts without having to search the net for the source file.
I ran the Network Diagnostics and it insists the Conneciton to iTunes failed, suggesting I adjust my cable (i don't have one - it's wireless) or flush my dns settings (which i've done several times).
I found a thread on these forums from March and tried every solution:
    - uninstalling and reinstalling itunes... doesn't work.
    - opening Internet Explorer 7, then opening iTunes... doesn't work.
    - searching for a host file and removing the phobos apple line... doesn't work. The phobos line wasn't there
    - using itunes 7... doesn't work.
    - flushing my dns... doesn't work.
    - turning off my firewall.... doesn't work.
    - avoiding clashes with mcafee or zone alarm... doesn't work, cos i don't use those
I think it's appalling that I've tried all this, and i'm still no closer to knowing what the problem is, and that Apple failed to respond to any of the other people's problems in the earlier thread. And that i spent about ten minutes signing up to this fecking forum just to ask for help. Surely support should be readily available to anyone!
Can anybody help me? In the other thread, people found alternative sites for buying music, but has anyone got an alternative, ipod-compatible podcasting program?

I have this same problem. Here's what I can add to this discussion - iTunes accessed the iTunes store a day or two ago. I have a home network and can access the internet from all of the networked PCs. I can access the iTunes store from all of the networked PCs using Internet Explorer. I can access the iTunes store from my laptop iTunes. I can not access the iTunes store from my workstation PC. I get the same "network connection timed out" message. I downloaded and installed a new (same version) of iTunes on the workstation PC. both the laptop and the workstation are running the same OS (Windows XP SP2), both are Dell computers, both are accessing the internet via a wired connection to the same switch and the same router. All other internet connections work fine.
What's different? In the last couple of days my Workstation lost access to a network printer. I worked with HP for over an hour to re-establish network connection to that printer with no success. I have access to the same networked printer from my laptop.
The IP address for the network printer is identical to what it was when it was installed - HP suggests looking for a change to the IP address. I made no changes to the workstation PC, the home network or the router, ISP, or internet connection.
But, it seems to me that the loss of access to the HP networked printer and the inability of iTunes to access the iTunes store are related.
I also called Apple and attempted to get technical support. I own 4 iPods with 104 Gbs of storage on them, I own 1900 CDs and iTunes has 36.5 days of music loaded into it.
I purchased Apple Care on all of the iPods - it's expired and they never warned me. They want to charge me $29 to fix this problem - even though I no longer can purchase music via the iTunes Store, so I need to pay $29 in order to gain access to the iTunes store to spend more money with Apple?! Not a smart business decision. I own a few other PC based music programs and more than willing to transfer all of it out of iTunes and into one of the other products. I'll sell all the iPods on eBay and purchase other MP3 players if I must.
But, I suspect the problem is (1) Apple doesn't have a documented answer to this problem, (2) the level 1 techs that answer the support phone are clueless - they just e-mailed me the same article from the Apple website that I told them I read and does not apply to my problem, and obviously does not resolve my problem. (3) Apple is not setup to resolve this type of problem with their level 1 support, and they can't escalate the problem without charging us.
I'll try again on Monday, may even purchase Apple Care first and then use that. The Apple Care Tech Support is typically better than the free level 1 call in support.
Suggestions, comments, etc. are all appreciated.

  • Mac Mini *half* loses all network connections

Cheers folks, new one on me.  I have a Mac Mini 2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo. It's running a fully-updated 10.6.8.  It's connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme which is extending an 802.11N network from another Airport Extreme elsewhere which is connected to the router.  The network is set with IPv6 *off* and is configured to run over Ethernet normally (this is because a wired-only NAS is connected to the same Airport Extreme as the Mini).
Here's the symptom, and it's an odd one for me:   Every couple of days, the entirety of the Mac OS X layer (not the BSD layer) will lose network connectivity.  More specifically:
No web browser will work ('Not connected to the Internet').
Home Sharing, served on this Mini, will cease to be visible from elsewhere in the house (AppleTVs lose it).
No internal services can be reached by name, either DNS or BonJour.
The App Store says 'can't connect.'
iTunes will say it can't connect to the ITMS.
This is true on Ethernet *or* on Airport (the Mini usually runs on ethernet alone with AirPort off; bringing up Airport once this has occurred doesn't seem to help anything).
Running the Airport Utility, it sees *no devices* (there are 4 on this network)
    BUT!
If I go into the Terminal, I can not only get clear network traffic anywhere I want at the TCP layer, DNS seems to work as well.  So the following is true also:
'ping cisco.com' (or any valid DNS name) works fine - resolves DNS, pings.
'traceroute cisco.com' works fine - resolves DNS, traceroutes out across the internet, no problems.
'ping <IP address of NAS>' - works fine.
    'dig <name>' - works fine.
pinging the gateway (the router airport) works fine.
    Also:
Other Macs in the house (on wired OR wireless, connected to any of the AirPorts including the same one as the Mini) work fine.
Other Macs can see the NAS connected to that same AirPort fine.
iOS devices in the house connected to any AirPort work fine.
netstat -r shows what look to be proper routes - i.e. the default gateway is the router address (10.0.1.1) and the route to 10.0.1.1 is shown to be the MAC address of the router's Ethernet interface (anyway, as I mentioned above, network stuff from the shell works fine<!?!??!
    Steps tried:
    Turning off ipv6 - nope.
    Applying all firmware/software updates (OS X 10.6.8) - nope.
Tried manually setting DNS to Google public DNS servers - nope.  Those work fine, and are still set when the network drops out, and then don't work, nor does setting new DNS servers in the Network prefpane.
    Logging out/back in - nope.
Restarting the computer:  YES.  This works, all three times this has happened (all this week).  Serious PITA.
I tried going through the system log, but I don't see anything notable that changes or is logged when the network connection drops.
Every time the connection has stopped working, the computer *has* slept at some point since it was last known working, but if I sleep the computer manually, everything seems fine.
.....waaaaaaaah!  Help, this one is making me crazy. :-)  Thanks.  I'm terminal-savvy, and fairly OS X savvy.

I still have this issue.  About every one hour - two days the DNS layer will stop working and only a restart will fix it.
Killing mDNSResponder only resolves the issue sometimes and even then for a few seconds.
I have now found and created the following bash script, to see if this will be a more reliable non-restart fix that killing mDNSResponder in the terminal:
    #!/bin/bash
#Script to unload and reload mDNS as it is a bit crappy
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
    echo "mDNS unloaded"
    sleep 5
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
    echo "mDNS loaded"
    sleep 5
echo "Hopefully you can get on with browsing again"
I saved the above as mdns_reload.command, and then in Terminal ran "chmod u+x mdns_reload.command".  This makes the script executable.
The next time the problem occurs I am going to test how good this script is as a resolution.
The second time the problem occurs I am going to try the following, from a different thread from 2011:
I don't know if anyone will be helped by this, but the Macbook problems connecting to the internet are directly related to DNS issues. I discovered this after an upgrade to the OS X Lion preview.
The symptoms are as follows: a macbook (pro, mini, etc) can get an IP address from a DHCP server on any given network, but can not connect to the internet, even though other computers on the same network have no issues. If this sounds familiar, read on.
The problem is not related to 3rd party products, routers, Airport settings, locations or public vs private DNS servers, and you don't need to reset SMC or PRAM.
You will need to use terminal and you DO NOT want to use disk utility to repair permissions.
The most direct way to fix this is to copy the com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and com.apple.mDNSResponderHelper.plist files from an internet connected Mac into your /System/Library/LaunchDaemons directory.
(You should know that it probably doesn't matter what version of OS X you have or the other Mac has, you just need the files.)
Next you will need to change ownership of the files just copied (ex: chown root:wheel /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and chown root:wheel /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponderHelper.plist)
Then, you will need to set correct permissions (ex: chmod -R 755 /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and chmod -R 755 /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist)
The last thing you'll want to do is to verify that the ownership of the files copied is set to system (and maybe wheel) using "Get Info." (Conversely, you can use ls -l /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist to verify owner and permissions.)
You should not have to restart to connect immediately to the internet.

  • [SOLVED] Losing network connection after suspend

Lately I'm having this peculiar problem.  When resuming after suspend (specifically, pm-suspend), I have no network connection.  I first noticed this on March 31st.  The only thing that changed was that I upgraded these packages:
    openssl-1.0.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    xf86-video-ati-6.14.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    lib32-libdrm-2.4.33-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    libnotify-0.7.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    xz-5.0.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    vim-taglist-45-5-any.pkg.tar.xz
But I'm pretty sure I would have suspended and resumed successfully at least once after that upgrade.
Can anyone suggest what I should look at to try to diagnose this?
    Thanks

Same issue here. Looks like dhcpcd crashes during or after running /usr/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks on resume from suspend. I'll try downgrading until this is fixed.

  • ITunes loses location of files every time a network connection is interrupted

I keep all my media files on a RAID attached to my router. I have a MacBook, and I don't want to fill up my boot drive with music files, nor do I want all my music on an external hard drive that has to be physically attached to my laptop (lack of portability, inconvenient to eject every time I want to take the laptop somewhere, hard drives fail, etc.).
The problem is that every so often, I'll get the message "network connection interrupted." I'm hardwired to the router at home via Ethernet, but for whatever reason, sometimes it just pops up the network connection interrupted message.
If I'm listening to iTunes when that happens, iTunes will stop playing the song, and an exclamation mark will appear to say "hey, I can't find that file where I thought it would be." What's far worse is that iTunes will then go on to try and play the next song, and the next, and the next, and so on down the line, placing an exclamation mark next to each one as it fails to find the volume where they're stored. In this way, entire albums or even entire artists will get "lost" to iTunes.
The next time I go to listen to a song that has the exclamation mark, if my network connection is established, I can double-click, and it will play just fine as it looks for the volume and finds it. Unfortunately, I have to double-click each and every song individually. I can't just click "play album," or even double-click one song and let it go on to the next. I have to go to every song that's "lost," double-click them one at a time, and then they'll play, and be usable by services that connect to iTunes, such as iMovie, or the Remote app on my iPhone.
Is there any way to prevent this situation from happening? Either by telling iTunes not to declare a song "lost" just because it can't find it one time, or to tell it to look in the last place it saw it, so that when the network connection is active, it will just go ahead and play the song?
As it is, it seems that my only choices are to keep all my music on my boot drive or an external plugged directly into the laptop, or to stop using iTunes for my music. Neither of those solutions would be positive outcomes for me.
My setup is a MacBook running 10.6.8, a 5th generation Airport Extreme running 7.6.1, and a Drobo RAID attached to the network.
    Thanks!

Thre's nothing in iTunes you can configure.  There are scripts that could be used to repair links broken in your scenario, but not ones I would want to have to run regularly.  I see a number of posts here where people have issues with iTunes having problem with NAS.  It seems to work find if you just attach an external drive via USB or Firewire but once you start getting fancy with NAS and RAID, problems arise.  You'll have to see if there's something you can do on the networking side to stop this, or you'll just have to quit iTuneswhen the network drops and restart.

  • Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.6 network connection issues

    Dear Guru ,
after install OEL 6.6 x86_64 I noticed that the network connection is disconnect after while and need to manually choose the network connection Ex.(system eth0)
how to troubleshooting this issues and how to resolve it
    Thanks

Oracle Linux 6 installs with all network connections disabled by default. If you're running a desktop environment, you can tell NetworkManager to start the interface automatically on boot. Right-click the network icon in the top right-hand corner and select "Edit connections". Then, highlight the interface you want to start on boot and click "Edit", finally click "Connect automatically". Note this can also be done by configuring the interface during installation.
If you are not running a desktop environment, you will have to edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX file and set ONBOOT=yes.

  • Snow Leopard and Juniper Network Connect/How to temporarily disable Bonjour

    Hi All,
I have encountered a problem with Juniper Network Connect running on my MacBook Air. I can connect successfully to my company's VPN but on my MacBook Air Junipers Network Connect started to dis- and reconnect in changing time intervals.
After some googling I am pretty sure that it has something to do with the Bonjour service changing the routing tables. I wanted to confirm this and activated "Back to my mac" on my MacBook Pro which up to now did not had any problems connecting to my company's VPN. Now it has the same issues.
My question is whether there is any way to temporarily disable Bonjour, ideally via Apple script. Up to now the only solutions I found were to either
    - disable mDNSResponder which would also prevent accessing any websites or
    - disable multicast advertisements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US)
The latter approach includes editing a properties file and restarting the mac, thus would be less than ideal for just quickly dis- and enabling bonjour. Furthermore I am not quite sure whether this really solves the problem of updating the routing table.
    Any advise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    equinox

If you are using an Airport or Airport Express base station: go to Utilities>Airport Utility. When it's found the Airport, click on 'Manual Setup'. In the next pane, click on the 'Wireless' tab; when that pane opens click on 'Wireless Network Options...'. Check 'Create a closed network'.
If you are using another manufacturer's wireless router you will need to look at their instructions, but the principle is the same - it may say something like 'Hide SSD'.

  • Preparing network connections = reboot...

    Hello.
Im really new to System Center and have gotten the respenoibility in our IT department to configure it and to keep it updatet with the latest drivers for our clients.
Recently we bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T440 laptop. When i tried to reinstall windows 7 using SCCM 2012 i got to the point where it said "preparing network connections" then it disapeared and all i could see was a blank SCCM background. After a few
    seconds the computer rebooted.
So what i have tried to do is:'
I downloaded the SCCM driver pack from Lenovo for the T440. Imported it into SCCM, added it to a driver package (wich i made new) and added it to a x64 boot image, since this was the x64 drivers. Simply following the import driver wizard. What i did next
was to distribute the driver package to the DP and then i updated the DP with the boot image.
All the right network drivers are there and i still get the same fault... A rebooting client after "preparing network connections".
Appreciating all answers and tips :)
Edit: The driver package i found on Lenovo is a driver package for SCCM and is called SCCM Package for windows 7 (x64).

Hello and thanks for so many good answers! You guys are really helpful :)
Now i have cleaned up the boot images and started all over again from scratch. This time i tried to only import the network drivers for the T440, i saw some people before had done that in a different driver package. But when i am trying to update DP, adding
the network drivers to the boot image i get this error message:
      Error: Boot image to update:

Does anyone know what i have done wrong this time?
I have also now tried the IPCONFIG command and all that appears is Windows IP Configuration... nothing else.. and i can type /all because of my Norwegian keyboard.. and i have no idea where i can find the /.. :P
Edit: The drivers i have imported are for windows 7 and the boot image OS version is 6.2.9200. Is this wrong? The Error does not longer occur and i have succesfully updated the DP. But still, it reboots after "Preparing network connections".

    Agreed.
The network error is the client saying it gave up waiting for the server's response, or the server waiting for a pending client request. Typically, this is what happens when the application does a core dump (to use the old-school term).
Causes are numerous, but results are often data corruption (not always). Ensure that the app isn't in a hung state on the server (for windows, find it's thread and kill it if necessary, for unix, use the Kill -9 on it's PID). Once it's down, the database may recover fully, or may require fixing -- but if it's hosed it's often easier to restore from backup and move on.
Avoiding the issue in the future: the message to increase netretry/netdelay is misleading. If you get the timeouts on the network often, this is indeed the answer, but if you got the timeout because of a locked database, it's just a transient symptom that is unrelated.
What caused the lock-up? Intermittent network issues from an ill-timed backup of the server in the next rack, or a power outage in a router, doesn't really matter -- unless it becomes a reaccurring issue -- then it's time to find the network manager and pound some common sense into them (just kidding, I'm sure they will be pro-actively addressing issues like this... well, maybe...). Just let them know that you are having network performance issues if it happens again.
Meanwhile, validating the database is important to ensure the corruption has been cleaned up. You can do it from EAS or a MAXL statement, but do it before trying to repair it with any tools or recovering from a backup.

  • How can I stop the network connections popup?

In our house we have 4 macs...two of them are new and I set them up by restoring from TimeMachine rather than with the migration tool as I have done in the past. This was recommended to me as a "cleaner" way to set up new machines (at least on an alternating basis).
On these two new machines I get a popup "Do you the application "microsoft word.app" to accept incoming network connections (this is also for excel or any office product). I'm still using Office for Mac 2008.
The only way I can find to stop these annoying popups is to turn off the fire wall, which I do not want to do (and which I have not done on the 2 mac books and they work fine).
Is there some setting or script I can run to fix this?
    thanks,
    tom

    Linc-
I'm taking your advice because I've seen many other great answers from you...but not without some trepidation :-)
This is so weird ... I've set the mac books next to the iMacs and looked at every setting on them...all the same, yet one gets the popup and the other doesn't. I found that it doesn't matter whether I set the firewall to allow or not-allow, the popup is there in both cases.
Do you have any advice on airport settings that I should be changing the defaults to? (other than a good WPA2personal password which I have)?
    thanks again,
    tom

  • Network connection timed out....err 3259

Please help! iphone5 is in recovery mode after trying to update to iOS 7, but will not restore. Keep getting "network connection timed out' error 3259. I have disabled my firewall, uninstalled any sort of antivirus (was Norton), flushed dns cache, uninstalled/reinstalled itunes twice, started itunes "run as administrator", many times restarting my computer. Made sure the time/time zone were correct on my computer. What am I doing wrong?
Super frustrated--my iphone is basically useless until I can restore it.
I would go to an apple store to ask these questions, but the nearest one is 3 hours away.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

Oh.. sorry forgot Carrie.. I'm on Verizon.net DSL for my service provider.. Not Road Runner.. So not sure if it's an Internet Provider issue.. And as I've said before.. It worked fine before when I downloaded "Pirates of the Carribean" And "Stick It" No problems.. Just as of the other night all these errors started..
I do have some insight to this issue.. And in my opinion.. And my experience.. It's almost as if Apple's Firewall to the port in which the movies download is being blocked.. I've checked my Norton Antivirus to see if it was me.. But everything is fine on my end.. Even Disabled Norton's Firewall completely off to trouble shoot.. And still the same errors.. So It's not me.. Even uninstalled and reinstalled ITUNES 7.2 itself.. Not that either.. As I said.. It feels like the port in which the movies are downloaded from is being blocked when it shouldn't.. You can plainly see a connection trying to be made.. And when initiating.. It tries and tries, then you get the error.. Because it failed to make connection.. This may be the case for the music as well and any other purchased items from ITunes store.. When purchased.. The script should open up the ports for that customer and allow full access.. But something is stopping it.. Could be a script error.. Not sure.. Just me thinking of multiple things it could actually be..
And finally.. I hate to say this.. And anything is possible at this point.. But since the installation of IE 7.. I've noticed errors on applications I would of never dreamed possible in the past weeks.. So i'm afraid IE 7 may be on the list of possibilities as well. And may be worth looking into on Apple's part as well.. Just an idea.. Since I have no control of this situation.. • Hi, I am trying to update an iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 7.0.4, and every time I try to update it comes up with an error message saying that there was a problem because the network connection was reset. Is there any way I can get past this and update?

    The full message said:
There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Judy's iPhone 4". The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.
I am trying to update the iPhone for my grandmother, Judy, as I am leaving for Paris on Wednesday night and we want to have Facetime installed on her iPhone before then, so we can stay in contact with each other. It is the simplest way for this to happen but the program simply will not allow me to update her iPhone.
Is there any way to get past this error and update her iPhone? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
