SDK 1.4.2: does the required JRE/Plugin undermine the use of applets?

I have overcome the problems of running applets under SDK 1.4.2 by installing the required plugin. Now everything runs fine again, but I am left with one crucial question. For me it's no problem to download those 30+Mb, but how can I expect people visiting my webpages to do the same? it's more likely that this barrier will stop people visiting the page.
I think the problem is limited tot those having Microsoft OS's, but that's quite a lot of them out there!
I am thinking of uninstalling and downgrading to an older SDK version, but that seems a short-term solution, or is not?
Is there a good alternative? The one Microsoft recommends (tranferring to C#,J#) clearly is not because then the situation is reversed: only Window's users can visit the page.
I read a lot of questions in the forums regarding the plugin, but not regarding the use of applets. Do I miss a crucial reason why applets are not less attractive under SDK1.4.2 than before?
I would be happy if you would share your ideas. Thamks, Marc

well, what you can do is limit yourself to 1.1. The reason you would do this is because pretty much any VM can run it (including Microsoft's). The problem is there's alot of useful features missing. For example if you were working with pixels on an image, you have to use the slow PixelGrabber instead of the quick BufferedImage. A bigger kick than that is that there isn't any swing.
and by the way, if you choose to limit yourself to 1.1, dont forget to compile with:
javac -target 1.1 yourFile.java
...or it wont work.

  • How does one know whether or not they use "Java applets"?

The support doc for the recent Java update (Update 8, for Snow Leopard), entitled "About Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8," advises the following:
If you do not use Java applets, it is recommended that you disable the Java web plug-in in your web browser.
How does one know whether or not they use "Java applets"?

Also, how would I know that a missing applet was causing some feature(s) not to work in a situation where no error mesage was returned?
Sometimes you have to dig to find out: http://earthnow.usgs.gov/earthnow_app.html
doesn't tell you directly, but it is mentioned in the FAQ that Java is required. If the content is appropriate, you can always ask here.
Thanks.  According to that webpage, my "Java is out of date."  When an error message like that is returned, I guess it's clear that "it's a Java problem."  Presumably, one would then just go to java.com and download the applet if he/she wanted to view the webpage.
I was wondering more about situation when unexplained problems that involved missing Java applets weren't noted in error messages.
But maybe I'm worrying about something that doesn't really need to be worried about.

  • Capture Sharpening & Lens Corrections- Does the order matter?

Okay, I think I understand the concept that all of the changes made in Lightroom are metadata edits, and so it does not matter what order you make changes to your image. So using the lightroom controls for sharpening and lens corrections (chromatic aberration, etc.) is just fine.
But what if you are doing your capture sharpening outside of lightroom, say using photokit sharpener in photoshop?
Does the use of the lens correction tools in lightroom negatively affect the capture sharpening done later in photoshop? Ideally I'd like to do all of the possible image adjustments in lightroom, without doing any sharpening, and then head over to photoshop for capture sharpening and any further photoshopping that is necessary.
But if I do lens correction changes in lightroom, will that cause a problem? Do I need to forego doing any lens correcting in lightroom if I am going to be doing capture sharpening in photoshop after the fact?
    Thanks for the help.

I shoot in Raw. I only recently got Photokit Sharpener, so I am trying to work that in to my workflow, in which case I would turn off Lightroom's default sharpening.
I think I may be worried about something that isn't really a problem, but I had heard that when you adjust for chromatic aberrations, it adjusts the color channels, for example moving the red channel in relation to the blue channel, in order to eliminate the color fringing. If that is the case, then I was wondering whether sharpening applied outside of Lightroom would have to be applied after the chromatic aberration adjustments had been made or if it could be applied before without causing problems.
My current plan is to just apply the capture sharpening in Photoshop after all LR adjustments have been made, and hopefully that will work out fine.

I’m running the sample encryption code and I’m running in to this exception:

    [ Solution ]
If you are using the EncryptContent.java sample code, please check which credential you are using for the "packagerCredentialFile" variable.  Make sure this is pointing at the .pfx file containing the packager credential.

  • Does the current WebKit version in Air SDK 3.5 support Uint8Array or any bufferArray stuffs?

Does the current WebKit version in Air SDK 3.5 support Uint8Array or any bufferArray stuffs?  If not, is there an alternative or workaround solution so I can reuse some javascript routines that requires bufferArray like Uint8Array...?   Thanks in advance.

You needed to use SDK 5.1 or later. AIR uses 6.0 or 6.1 now, so Retina is ok without any special tricks.

  • I have recently upgraded my iBookG4 from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and find my Bluetooth USB adaptor no longer connects. The Bluetooth pane says inactive. Does Leopard require  USB 2.0. I've had the adaptor for some time so may be USB 1.0

I have recently upgraded my iBookG4 from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and find my Bluetooth USB adaptor no longer connects. The Bluetooth pane says inactive. Does Leopard require  USB 2.0. I've had the adaptor for some time so may be USB 1.0

Bluetooth icon on menu bar shows bluetooth off. When opening bluetooth preferences it shows the devices I've connected previously,( my mobile phone), and other devices I've attempted to connect but not very successfully: my iPhone and MiniMac.  The bluetooth dongle in the USB port shows a continual blue light but does not react and the iBook does not recognise that it is there. There is absolutely no reaction when I try to pair my mobile phone, which I've done successfully before upgrading to Leopard, either by the iBook or the mobile phone.
I assumed that Tiger was not bluetooth compatible with the iPhone or MacMini running SnowLeopard and hoped by upgrading to Leopard I could achieve some file transfers between the three devices (iBook, iPhone and MacMini)

  • TS1398 After updating to ios 6 my iphone 4 would no longer connect to my home wifi. At work we have a free wifi connection that does not require a password. However my wifi at home is password protected. I have the right password. It works on my ipod touc

After updating my iphone 4 with the ios 6 update. My iphone would no longer connect to my home wifi that is password protected. I know that I have the right password entered in. At work we have a free wifi connection that does not require a password and I can connect no problem to it. My ipod touch has no problem connecting to my home wifi. It is a 3rd gen ipod and does not have the ios 6 update on it. Please help!

I'm having the same issues. Started when I upgraded iphone 4S and ipad1 to 5.1.1. Wife's iphone 4g on 4.4.2 has been ok. I've forgot the network on both devices and restored the iphone, none of which changed the issue. I've upgraded to ios 6 on the iphone 4s, problem still persists.
One thing that will help for a time: go to your router and change the wireless control channel. When I first did this I got full connectivity for about 48 hours... and now the problem is back. I'm now changing the wireless control channel every 12 hours, which is a pain but at least keeps me connected. I've tried a few other solutions that are out there and that has been the best one so far.
to do this on a motorola router: type 192.168.0.1 in your address bar.
username: admin and password:motorola if you have not changed the factory defaults.
Click on the word "wireless" and look for the "control channel" field. This may be set to auto or to 1, try changing it to 6 or 11 (preferred) or any other channel.
The control channel can cause static in the wireless system IF there are several networks nearby that are on the default setup.
There is a fair bit of buzz about this issue out there, some other things I've seen:
This is a hardware issue. Go to the store and have your wifi antenna checked, some users reporting that they get free replacement devices.
Check against other wifi networks that require a password (this is next for me). Logon to those networks and surf until your wifi stops. If your wifi connects to the internet but stops responding, then this is a software (or hardware) issue and apple needs to step up. Some are claiming this to be the case.
IF you connect and stay connected/on the internet on another password protected wifi, then the issue is with your router. this is where things get cute.
Comcast may tell you to update your firmware. Motorola may tell you that your cable provider is the only one who can push through firmware updates. Comcast may tell you that you are not in an area that is being updated. It's unclear if they say that to all customers, or just those who have purchased cable modems and aren't renting them from comcast.
Good luck, more to come if I figure out anything else, and please post any solutions you may find.

I'm thinking of getting apple tv...I have an HD tv. will the apple tv automatically detect my wifi or does it require more to use apple tv?

    Hi ronda
I am not sure what you mean by "automatically". It will find your network but you will need to enter your password, assuming you have your WiFI protected.

  • What is the privacy policy of Home Sharing? Why does it require an AppleID?

Do devices using Home Sharing upload any usage information--or for that matter, any data at all--about the files being shared, or the libraries to which they have access? Why is an AppleID required, rather than, for instance, any made-up shared key, the way the Windows Homegroup works?

    Please see my post above.
As far as I can fathom...Apple TV needs permanent Internet connection else it stops. Whilst it may not actively use the connection 100% of time whilst playing (although I do not know this for sure) as soon az the internet goes down so does the Home Sharing and as Apple TV is reliant on Home Sharing and willonly share content via Home Sharing then Apple TV needs permanent Internet.
Also cannot even turn on Apple TV unless it is connected to the network and this does not mean Wifi only it means Wifi with internet sharing turned on.
No one has been able to tell me how they run Apple TV without permanent internet connection.
No one has been able to tell me how they start Apple TV without internet connection.
No one has been able to tell me how, once Apple TV up and running and internet drops out, how they maintain the Apple TV connection.
Again I ask why does Apple TV need a Permanent Internet Connection?

You will need to factor the voltage per degrees C to get to reading in degrees, this is 10mv per degree V for the device mentioned in the post you previously made

  • HP Envy- does it require internet connection for the air print feature to work?

I am considering purchasing an HP Envy printer, but I live in an area with limited internet service (very slow dial-up).  Does the Envy require an internet connection to work?  I have a Macbook Air, and am assuming that I can just use my wireless router without connecting it to the internet.  Has anyone out there used the air print in this situation?

    Hi,
It should work without internet just a home network should be ok.

I have an LG Dare that I would like to use on an existing plan. BUT I dont want to pay for data, so I was wondering since Verizon has changed so much with their plans, does the LG Dare require a data plan in order to use it on my plan? All I use the phone for is calls and unlimited texting, no internet. Why pay for something I will never use?

We appreciate you bringing this to the attention of the forum. It is fantastic to see of your proactive nature.
The LG Dare does not require a data package. If you would like to add a data package. The current data option for the device is $10 / 75 MB.
