Sdk/jre folder nightmare

It is a nightmare keeping up sdk/jre folders. Every time, there is a new version of j2se sdk/jre, it always creates a new folder. Then i have go on all the pcs, uninstall old version and change the JAVA_HOME and CLASSPATH. It is pain. Why can't sun just create the generic folder and have an auto uninstall program to automatically uninstall previous version in their upgrades of sdk/jre's? Has anyone have a solution?

Well, on unix, there is a trivial solution for this: Create a symlink which points to the sdk installation dir, and make symlinks from the executables, too. Here is what I mean:
I installed java2 sdk to /usr/local/apps/j2sdk. Then I created a link to this dir, named /usr/local/apps/java2. After that, I symlinked all executables from /usr/local/java2/bin to /usr/local/bin.
This way, if I install a newer version of java, all I need is to change the target of that one link, and nothing else is necessary.

  • Question about Jre folder

    Hi,
    After installing Java, I have a JRE folder under jdk1.5.0_03 directory,
    and another folder jre1.5.0_03 under java directory.
    Can someone please tell me the different between these two folders? Which one is the run-time jre? Thanks in advance.

    The differences are explained in the Installation Instructions for the product that you installed - and didn't read the instructions :)
    Here is the explanation (and I recommend you back up and read the instructions, there is other useful information there.)
    "Private vs. public JRE - Installing the JDK installs a private J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) and optionally a public copy. The private JRE is required to run the tools included with the JDK. It has no registry settings and is contained entirely in a jre directory (typically at C:\Program Files\jdk1.5.0\jre) whose location is known only to the JDK. On the other hand, the public JRE can be used by other Java applications, is contained outside the JDK (typically at C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0), is registered with the Windows registry (at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft), can be removed using Add/Remove Programs, might or might not be registered with browsers, and might or might not have java.exe copied to the Windows system directory (making it the default system Java platform or not). 2.) place the comm.jar and javax.comm.properties files into the lib folder under the SDK installation

    ...you could avoid attempting an overlay. Try:
    1. Closing FB 4.7.
    2. Backing up FB 4.7's old AIRSDK folder by renaming it to something else.
    3. Unzipping the pre-combined AIR 3.5 SDK with ASC 2.0 Preview 4 and putting it in place of the old AIRSDK folder with the exact name.
    4. Starting FB 4.7.
    FB 4.7 does plan to offer in-tool upgrades to official AIR SDK with ASC 2.0 distributions.

  • [RESOLVED] Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path: C:\java16

    I have SQL Developer 3.0.04.34 in C:\apps\sqldeveloper\ and the 32-bit 1.6 JDK in C:\java16\. SQL Developer was working properly until this morning after I updated my JRE (C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\) from 1.5 to 1.6 and JDK (C:\java16\) from 1.6.something to 1.6.26. Now SQL Dev prompts me again for the path to java.exe, but when I specify C:\java16\bin\java.exe, it gives me the error shown in the thread title. The existing sqldeveloper.conf shows "SetJavaHome C:\java16". I found other threads that mention this error, but the problem is typically pointing to the JRE instead of JDK (C:\java16\ is the JDK in my case) or 32-bit vs. 64-bit (this is 32-bit JDK in XP x86). What else might cause the error? I'd rather not reinstall the SQL Developer package that includes the JDK since I already have the JDK elsewhere and it was working before.
    EDIT: Never mind. Something must have gone wrong when I was updating the JRE and JDK. I reinstalled the JDK, and now SQL Developer starts.

    When i start sqldeveloper.exe (there no exe with a 64 in the name) there ist a dialog that wants to know the path to the JRE.
    I tried to chose the directory i placed the Java 7 JDK.
    Tried the bin folder in that.
    Tried the jre folder and the bin folder in jre.
    Everytime i do this ther is the message "cannot find java se sdk installation".
    Maybe i am doing it wrong.
    What i did:
    Downloaded jdk-7u45-windows-x64.exe from oracle.com
    Downloaded sqldeveloper-4.0.0.12.84-no-jre.zip from oracle.com
    Unzipped sqldeveloper-4.0.0.12.84-no-jre.zip to directory
    Opened jdk-7u45-windows-x64.exe with 7zip, there opened tools.zip, unzipped tools.zip to a directory
    Started sqldeveloper.exe from software directory and tried to find the JRE... diddn't work
    Maybe sqldeveloper.exe ist looking for 32 bit Java?
    Update:
    Downloaded jdk-7u45-windows-i586.exe from oracle.com
    Opened jdk-7u45-windows-i586.exe, there opened tools.zip, unzipped tools.zip to a directory
    Started sqldeveloper.exe from software directory and tried to find the JRE... diddn't work
    Doesn't look like its working this way.
    I would realy be very happy to have the new SQL Developer packaged with JAVA again - thats the sollution i am looking for.

  • JRE part of the J2SDK vs JRE

    Hello guys,
    I have installed the J2SDK on my UNIX box (Sun solaris), have developped a small app and need to deploy it on other UNIX boxes. It seems to me useless to install the full package of the SDK on these boxes and was consequently wondering whether the j2sdk\jre directory would be just fine or if I have to install the JRE package ?
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards.

    Take a look at the readme of the JRE (in the jre-folder):
    The Java 2 Runtime Environment is intended for software developers and vendors to redistribute with their applications.
    In fact, i dont think its legal to redistribute the J2SDK
    --> Yes it should be enough to include only the jre

    Does anybody know where this comes from? Is it an incompatibility with Windows 7 x64? I have installed the latest Java SDK for Win64.
    I have another issue consisting in the fact that the Eclipse MJT plug-in is not abel to find any devices in the Java ME SDK 3 folder (see my post in the Eclipse forum [Post in Eclipse MJT forum|http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php?t=msg&th=156515&start=0&S=6f25cc6925ad7008453ee93ca55525a2]), does this have anything to do with the problem described above?

    Edit file "C:\Java_ME_platform_SDK_3.0\bin\java", replace the path of x64 jdk by path of x32 jdk.
    For example, my file contains "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_21" and I change to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_21".
    You need have a 32 bits jdk installed. Restart device managar after the change.
    Obs.: This happens because device manager need load a 32 bits DLL. So you need run they with a 32 bits jdk.
    With this method you don't need remove x64 jdk. You can stay with both jdk.

  • Installing AIR3 SDK in Flash Builder 4.5.1 ?????

    Hi All,
    Can anyone help me, with installing AIR3 SDK - Flash Builder 4.5.1, logically, I need to overally the sdk, the way, we use to do with previous version of AIR SDK.
    But no luck
    Thanks,
    Ravi

    Hi Ravi,
    just installed AIR3 SDK at work. I try to recap the steps I did:
    1. Locate the "old" SDKs
    They are located in the Flash Builder directory, in my case this was c:\program files(x86)\adobe\flash builder 4.5\sdks
    2. Make a copy of the previous SDK
    Copy a previous SDK (I used SDK 4.5.1 for that) and rename the copied folder to AIR3SDK (or a different name if you like)
    3. Overwrite the copied (!) SDK with the AIR3 SDK
    Copy  all files from the AIR3 SDK into the copied folder. It should ask you  to overwrite files quite a couple of times. After this, you should have a  working AIR3 SDK installed.
    4. Set a name for the new SDK
    I had to to this with the Beta2 - go to the new SDK directory and edit flex-sdk-description.xml - change the <name> content from Flex 4.5.1 to AIR3 SDK.
    6. Add the new playerglobal.swc from Flash Player 11
    Download the current Flash Player 11 "playerglobal.swc" from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer11.html and put it into the correct folder. From the SDKs root folder this was: <sdkroot>/frameworks/libs/player/11.0/ (I had to create the 11.0 folder myself and then just put the file in there and rename it to plain "playerglobal.swc")
    7. Add the AIR3 SDK to Flash Builder
    Under "Project Settings - Flex Compiler" for a project, choose the new SDK as SDK to use for the project. If the SDK does not show up, go to "configure Flex SDKs", then "Add" and select the newly created folder. The new AIR3 SDK should now be included in the dropdown list as a compiler for that project.
    Don't forget to add -swf-version=13 as a compiler flag on the same screen.
    After doing all this, I was able to use the new features, compile my projects and well, work with it
    Edit: I almost forgot - you also have to set the namespace in your -app.xml to 3.0 like this:
    <application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/3.0">
    Best regards,
    Martin

  • How to install AIR SDK 15 on my iMac

    Hi everyone... I built my iOS app on Flash cs6 (with the latest AIR SDK 15) on my windows computer, but now have access to a Mac. The problem though is that the Flash cs6 on the mac is running AIR 3.2 and I have downloaded the latest AIR SDK 15 for Mac but I don't know how to install it. Can anyone help me?

    I assume its the same as installing any other AIR SDK's. you go to Help >>> Managed Air SDK >>> click on the + sign on the top right >>> navigate to the AIR SDK 15 folder and then done!
    I'm in the same situation as you are but I haven't received my imac YET. so I will let you know once I have done this myself or you can share your experience with us?

  • WxWidgets, Mac and Acrobat 9 SDK

    We are having a lot of problems in the Mac using wxWidgets whch have now started using as a cross platform replacement to ADM.
    On MacOS 10.4 (Tiger):
    Having the sample 'wxPlugin' from the Acrobat 9 SDK samples-folder installed in either Acrobat 9 Pro or Acrobat 9 Reader leads to malfunction in some circumstances.
    The two issues we experienced are:
    1. You cannot open a PDF from the Finder - it just happens nothing (if Acrobat hasn't been running before, it will start though).
    2. You cannot shut down MacOS (or restart it) while Acrobat is running (it doesn't matter if there is any document open) - you have to quit Acrobat manually or "Force Quit".
    This is due to the wxInitialize call during the plug-in initialization (a reduced plug-in which does nothing works, but adding the single call to wxInitialize() (nothing more) would lead to the issues described above). The following information should help to reproduce the problem:
    1. The 'wxPlugin' sample hasn't been touched apart from adjusting the path to the wxWidgets headers and libraries.
    2. For wxWidgets, version 2.8.7 and 2.8.8 has been used, both without success.
    3. Both wxWidgets libraries have been build with the following configuration: ../configure --disable-unicode --disable-shared --disable-monolithic --enable-universal_binary
    There are several other issues with the wxWidgets sample that may or may not be related to the above problems:
    1. The wxWidgets message loop is never called (would be part wxEntry function normally):
    2. This has more effects (but only for modeless dialogs, since modal dialogs have their own event queue while active):
    a) Messages about entering the window aren't processed -> that would result in e.g. the mouse pointer being not changed, not showing up tooltips etc.
    b) Idle events are never called
    c) Windows are never deleted - so basically all (including the window controls) remain as memory leaks
    The last two (b & c) can be solved by registering an AVIdleProc and calling there wxTheApp->ProcessIdle() ,but some messages still aren't properly processed - so modeless dialogs won't work properly.
    This can be easily verified by the Acrobat 9 SDK wxPlugin sample - the mouse cursor doesn't change if you have a document open and you see e.g. the Hand, and you move over the Modeless dialog of the sample. The same is true for tooltips (but they aren't applied in the sample code) - only in certain circumstances, when the window has been active - they will work.
    In order to get those events working, a call to wxTheApp->MacDoOneEvent() in the idle procedure would help, but that would make other parts of Acrobat irresponsible, so that is no solution - but might be a hint.

    I have a plug-in for Reader 10 written using wxWidgets 3.0 under Mac OS X 10.7 and I have all problems
    described in OP post. Issue with sockets is added. (when releasing socket object it has deleted twice sometimes)
    In this thread Adobe says that a new wxWidges sample will be coming shortly.
    The wxPlugin from SDK 11 samples looks like this:
    ACCB1 ASBool ACCB2 PluginInit(void)
    #ifndef MAC_PLATFORM
    /* The following code is not supported on Mac. */
              wxInitialize();
              mainFrame = new AcrobatFrame;
              wxTheApp->SetTopWindow(mainFrame);
              return MyPluginSetmenu();
    #else
    return true;
    #endif
    Is that true that wxWidgets officialy not supported in Acrobat SDK?
    Is there some approved and tested technique for proper using of wxWidgets with Acrobat SDK for Mac?
