SDK vs. JDK

JDK 5.0 source code is available for those interested
in exploring the details of the JDK...Sun likes to rename their stuff, and they used to call a JDK bundled with Netbeans for SDK.

  • SDK or JDK?

    Hi,
does the sap-j2ee-engine require sdk or jdk?

    Stefan

    Hi,
SDK or JDK is the same.
the JDK is included in the SDK.
Sun changed the label from SDK to JDK when Java 5 was released.

  • What is the difference between SDK and JDK?

Which is better? Are they both free for dowload?
    Thanks.
    Virum

sdk, jdk.. same thing. Whether you call it jdk1.3.1 or j2sdk1.3.1, doesn't matter. It's the standard edition. Free for download.
There are 3 editions, micro (J2ME), standard (J2SE) and enterprise (J2EE).
The microedition is when you develop for small devices like smart cards, mobile phones, etc.
J2SE is what you would most like need, even if you also want to build enterprise applications.
J2EE is mostly for webservers, where you develop JSP, servlets, EJBs etc.

  • JDK & SDK

Ok JDK is for Java development and SDK is for software development? What is the difference? I googled SDK and JDK and that is what it said anyway. Then another site said SDK is a new version of JDK, I knew i could only get the right answer here. Before i forget what about JRE and JVM? JRE is what you need to run java programs right? Does JRE run on the java virtual machine (JVM)? Why dont they make it one thing if thats the way it is? Like the JRM is a combination of JVM & JRE?
So if i read correct i need JRE to run java programs does JRE already have a JVM included?

JDK and SDK are the same.
For version 1.4.x term SDK is used.
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
SDK includes JRE. JRE is required for running Java applications
For 1.5 and later JDK is used.
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
    JDK includes the JRE.
    JDeveloper includes the JDK/SDK.

    Hi All,
I have simple query what is the exact difference
    between SDK ad JDK.
    Thanks,
AlokThere is actually no difference. Two different names
    referring to the same thing.
You may want to look at this:
    http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jdk.html"
well, there are many SDKs for things other than Java, so the definition of J(s)DK is a subdefinition of SDK :)

  • What's the difference btw JDK and SDK?

I went to the download page, some of the download are for J2SE Development Kit (JDK) ,some others are J2SE Software Development
Kit (SDK)?Are there any difference btw them?

Sun changed the label from SDK to JDK when Java 5 was
released. There was at least one earlier change, I believe, so it seems it was JDK, then became SDK (or J2SDK) and now back to JDK.
In the context of Java, if you're not a purist about matching a particular acronym with a particular version, then the two are interchangeable.

  • Problem with installing Java EE with JDK Bundle

    Hello everyone
I downloaded the Java EE SDK with JDK update 25 bundle for linux
The file end in .sh. however when I run the executable I get the no jar found message. Do I need to install jdk before I install jee and if I do then why do they provide them bundled if you have to have the jdk first before installing jee.
Another question also, how do I change my handle in this forum? I didn't pick this number!!

Yes, it is a bit stupid. You need the jar command which usually is available if you have a JDK installed but there are other ways of just installing just jar. Also note that some people already have an older JDK installed, thus jar is available and when they install this bundle they get a newer JDK.
Anyway, for changing your handle, you can do that from 'Your Control Panel' and then Edit your profile.

  • Installing EE SDK over SE SDK?

Trying to decide which SDK to install; there currently seem to be SE6 and EE5. If I install SE6 and then decide to upgrade to EE, it probably won't work because EE is of the previous version... Likewise, if I install EE5 but then decide to try version 6, I'll probably get a salad SDK which is half 5 and half 6... Do you just uninstall one and install the other, or are they compatible, or how do they work together? Could I install EE over SE if they were same version?

You are dealing with apples and oranges here. The SDK (or JDK) is either 5.0 or 6.0. That is Java SE. It is the foundation or base for Java EE. Currently, there is no EE 6 just EE 5. You need to choose whether to use SE 5 or SE 6. Once you decide that, THEN install EE 5, which is compatible with both. EE builds on SE.

  • Install NW Developer Studio. Error:SDK Folder not found!?

    Hi All,
I installed Java EE5 SDK(with JDK) and now want to install NW Developer Studio 2.0. The wizard ask for the Java SDK folder path and when I enter it gives an error message "JAVA SDK folder not found".
    I used this "path C:\Program Files\Java\Sun\SDK"
    Can anyone help ?
    Best Regards,
    Kushi

    Hi Kushi,
NWDS 2.0 is released with SAP NetWeaver 2004 which runs on JDK 1.4. Another reason for this issue might be the space in the path "C:\Program Files\Java\Sun\SDK".
Please install JDK 1.4 into a path without spaces and try again.
    Hope it helps!
    -Vladimir
PS. Your question does not seem related to the Java EE 5 Edition of SAP NetWeaver, so I'm moving this thread to the NetWeaver AS Java forum.

Thank you.No. Not from a programming point of view (JRE comes shipped with SDK or JDK, so U don't need to worry about this).

  • How "old" is JDK 1.1

Thought I'd start learning Java now, and I happen to have a book at home that is from 1999 or so, and it says it will mostly use the "new" JDK 1.1, although it will also mention the older 1.0.2 at places.
So, is this all so much history that I should burn it and check online-tutorials and such, or can I still have some use of this old book?
I understood that Swing is something important, makes it easy to make graphical things like windows/buttons and such, and this book only mentions it on one page (if I check the registry) so I dont even know if it will go through anything using Swing, and that might be bad maybe I dont know anything yet lol
Thanks (if anyone can take their time with yet another beginner) :)

Ok, thanks, I just found a free tutorial to download from Sun, looks really great and explaining all steps and so on. Right now I'm downloading the SDK (or JDK or whatever its called) and I did choose the package that includes Netbeans and some other development-tools. Guess I still cant make my own exe-files, but anyway nice with so many free things.
I'm afraid I dont know what MS JVM is but I doubdt its something I have to use lol.
Also, Swing, is that the only way to make graphical interfaces in programs, or are there other better ways? Just curious, I'll start learning myself very soon, but its always a good start to ask a few questions on forums and such to get a few answeres "for free" ;)

  • Quick Start Guide Info not working. Need info for Job Interview

I am brand spanking new to Java but I have a job interview next week and this is one of the topics I need to learn a little about. Here is my issue if someone would kind enough to help.
I downloaded and installed SDK and JDK I am going through the quick start guide I am using the Quick Start guide that comes with Application Server PE 9. The quick start guide requires you to download a "Tutorial Bundle" that comes with the Java EE 5 Tutorial.
The Quick start guide then tells you to access certain files that are in the Tutorial bundle. For example it wants me to go to /Samples/Quickstart directory in the tutorial bundle and look for the hello.war. Unfortunately that directory and file does not exist (there is an /examples/web/hello1 directory but no hello.war
Long story short is there anyway to find a Tutorial Bundle that actually works with the software that I downloaded? Thanks in advance for your help

I found another guide. Thanks anyway

  • Java SE5 and Java EE5 difference

What is the difference between Java SE5 and Java EE5? Also difference btwn SDK and JDK? I am confused about these basic concepts.
    Thanks
    Geet

Java Platform, Enterprise Edition is a related specification which includes all of the classes in Java SE, plus a number which are more useful to programs which run on servers as opposed to workstations.
Java EE includes several API specifications, such as JDBC, RMI, e-mail, JMS, web services, XML, etc, and defines how to coordinate them. Java EE also features some specifications unique to Java EE for components. These include Enterprise JavaBeans, servlets, portlets (following the Java Portlet specification), JavaServer Pages and several web service technologies.

  • Acrobat XI will not execute on my Win8 box

I have installed Acrobat Xi through the CC on my computer and at first when I brought up Acrobat  I received the following error:
Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server.
    How can I fix this?

Download JAVA Software Developement Kit (SDK previously JDK) from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Install the executable file just downloaded.
Search for command.exe file inside C:\Windows\System32 and copy it to the 'bin' folder inside the jdk folder (say C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_08\bin ).
Now double click open the command.exe file and ( something like this will be displayed c:\PROGRA~1\.....\BIN>) type edit autoexec.bat
Now type set path=%path%; c:\jdk..complete path (in my case set path=%path%;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_08\bin\autoexec.bat). For more info on setting path http://www.javacoffeebreak.com/tutorials/gettingstarted/part1b.html
    Save the file and exit.
    Thats it! Happy programming...
