Search by Keyword Problem

In iPhoto 7.1.4, When I select "keyword" in the search option, the keyword list appears for a second or two, then vanishes. How can I get the keyword list to stay long enough for me to select a keyword for the search?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try bringing up the black keyword pane again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • TOC problem; lost Search and Keyword boxes

I inherited a Robohelp X5 project that was originally started
by a person very familiar with these types of programs, then
ultimately messed up by someone who knew nothing about them or the
content. I spent most of my time re-writing and updating the
content using X5, then upgraded to 7 this morning. I have learned
quite a bit about the program, not obviously not enough. I'm sure
these are things I've messed up, because they worked before; but I
don't know what I did or how to fix it...
First, the TOC is built, with books and pages are in the
order I want. The books are linked to a page - presumably, so that
when a user clicks on the book, it defaults a particular page, and
from there they can move to other pages in the section. However,
when I view the results, you have to click on the book, then click
on the individual page to get the page to open.
Next, I have 'lost' the Search boxes for the Index and
Keyword searches. When I look at the skin, they appear there, but
when I view the project, they aren't - the index and keyword lists
    appear instead of the boxes.
If anyone can give me some direction on what I need to do,
    I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks so much for trying to help me - I apologize in advance
for being suce a novice, and I promise I'll try to learn more about
this program and not bother you guys so much in the future. Right
now I'm just in a bind with needing to get the file posted.
I right-clicked on each of the books, went to Properties, and
confirmed that the Book with Link box is checked, near the bottom
of the window, in the Link to: box is the page that I want the book
to open with. However, when I view the project, that isn't what
happens. For example: I have a Book named Getting Started, under it
are several pages related to initial set up of the software, one of
which is named Getting Started. The Book is linked to the page; but
when I open the project in View, I click on Getting Started and it
expands to show the pages; I have to actually click on the Getting
Started page to open it. Before, whenever I clicked on the Getting
Started Book, the Getting Started Page opened to reveal the
contents of the Book. On the Book Properties window, there isn't
anything in the Available Variables box, and if I go to the
Advanced tab, the Frame reads Default (none) - should the Book or
the Page be designated as a Parent Frame?
With regard to losing the Search and Keywords boxes - I have
an Index full of words; went through yesterday and cleaned it all
up, then generated Webhelp. When I open it to View, the project
opens to the TOC, which is good, but the Search button that usually
appears at the top of the Help screen is not there. Then, when I
click on either the Index or Search tabs, what I see is the
alphabet where the Search box should be, with a list of all of the
index words below. If I open the Skin that was used on the project
and View it, the Search boxes appear there.
I looked at the website that Peter directed me to, but I
don't really see anything there that addresses either of these
issues. Under the Tools menu I did locate an Update DHTML Effects
in Topic; but when I click on it, it returns a message that tells
me that after the conversion the topics cannot be opened by
previous versions of RoboHelp HTML. I've answered No to convert all
of the topics, because I'm not sure that's what I should do.

  • Searching by keyword doesnt work Outlook 2013

This seems like a weird one everyone. Searching in outlook by keyword doesn't work. Searching by sender and subject does work however. It should be noted that the user can search by keyword at other pcs and on the owa.
    Heres what I've tried:
    Reinstalling outlook
    deleting users mailbox and recreating
    repairing outlook 2013
    repairing pst/ost files
removing directories from index and putting them back in
    and rebuilding the entire index.

Sorry for my delay. If the issue persists in safe mode but not in other computer, please create a new Windows profile to have a try. Outlook uses data that is located in several different registry entries under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key and in data files
in your local Windows profile. Therefore, you can test Outlook by using a new Windows profile to eliminate many of these settings and files as the cause of your problem.
If the issue persists when using a new Windows profile, I suggest we can try to perform a clean boot in your Windows for more troubleshooting:

  • Improving Search for Keywords in NI Example Finder

Search for Keywords is presently limited to logical "OR" search. It would highly profit from logical "AND" Search.

Thinking out of the box here...
It's possible to search just the bookmarks with a script. The problem is how to show the result, since it's not possible to highlight the found bookmarks.
One option I can think of is to change the color of the matches to a different color, like red. Unfortunately, this doesn't work in Reader...
The only other option that might work in Reader is to tell the user where to look, ie which position in the tree (and what items are before and after it).

  • Aperture 3: search child keywords only ?

    Hi all,
Since a few days I am using Aperture on my iPhoto11 library. That library already had a lot of keywords, which I now have organized in Aperture using the hierarchical keyword feature. Now I would like to remove the keywords that have become parent keywords from the images (they were put there by an iPhoto plug-in) in order to keep only the lowest level keywords physically assigned to the photo's.
My idea was to do a keyword search on any of the parent keywords and then remove these keywords from the selected photo's. Unfortunately searching on a parent keyword also selects photos that do not physically have that keyword assigned to them but have it assigned implicitely because of the hierarchical structure.
Suppose I would have the following keyword hierachy:
    Nature
         Fauna
              Bird
                   Duck
I would like "Duck" to be the only keyword actually assigned to a photo. Because of my legacy iPhoto library many "Duck" pictures have the other keywords assigned to them as well. To remove them, I did a keyword search for "Nature", the idea being to then remove "Nature" from the selected photos. Unfortunately when I do this keyword search, it will also show pictures that do not actually hold the Nature keyword but have it implicitely assigned because it holds one or more of the child keywords.
What I would like is to show ONLY the images having the Nature keyword actually assigned to them. This option seems to be missing from the keywrod search dialogue, although the user manual suggests it would be possible, but in my opninion the user manual is wrong here. Under "Searching by Keyword" it states that the option "are applied" would show all images that have THE SELECTED keywords. This is not true: it will show all images that have ANY keyword applied. It is not even possible to select a keyword if you chose this option. All other options show the behaviour as described above.
So, does anybody know how I can select only images holding a particular keyword that is actually assigned to those images and ignore the hierachy ?

    First, back-up your Library.
Second, repair your Library -- instructions are on the Apple Aperture Trouble-shooting page.  You should, imho, _always_ repair your Library after every crash.  (Force-quitting is a user-initiated crash.)
You should be able to batch assign and delete keywords without hanging your system.  Changing keywords for ten-thousand Images may take several minutes, but it should never crash Aperture or your system.  That problem should be addressed before you attempt to pare and clean your keyword tree.
What is your set-up?  Aperture & OS versions, RAM, free space on system disk, location and size of Aperture Library, location and number of Referenced Originals, etc.  Has it been stable in the past?  Made any recent changes?
Third, confirm that your system runs Aperture well, and specifically that it runs your Library well.
Fourth -- strictly my personal suggestion -- adopt a keywording system that rigorously differentiates between "keywords as groups" and "keywords as tags".  So instead of "Nature; Fauna; Bird; Duck" use something like "=Nature=; a.Fauna; a.Bird; DuckMallard" where keywords bracketed by "=" are top-level groups, keywords prefixed with "a." are _groups_ and -- this is the rigorous part -- don't ever assign any top-level or grouping keyword to an Image.  Assign only "bottom-level" identifying keywords.
With such a system, "DuckMallard" and "DuckPinTailed" and "DuckCanvasBack" are assigned to Images as appropriate, and each Image so tagged will be included whenever you search for any of "=Nature=", "a.Fauna", or "a.Bird".
In this example, I suggest using the prefix "Duck" before all ducks so that when you sort an alpha list of keywords all your ducks are in a row.  If, instead, you preferred to group your ducks, make a group called "a.Ducks" and then you wouldn't need the "Duck" before "Mallard", "Teal" etc.  I found it helpful to include keywords such as "DuckUnknown" and "DuckGeneric" and "ID_Me"
Converting your current system to this system shouldn't be much work once you have your Library working well.
There are some refinements hidden in plain sight in Aperture's use of keywords, but let's make sure your Library is working first.  On my machine, I can filter for, say, "Fauna".  As you see, this will include both Images with "Fauna" assigned, and any Images with keywords that are children of "Fauna".  I can still select all and remove "Fauna".  The result is that none of the selected Images have "Fauna" assigned -- even though, if I filter for "Fauna" I will still be shown all the Images that have keywords that are children of "Fauna".
    HTH,
    --Kirby.

  • Searching photo keywords with spotlight

Hi - I have been adding keywords to my photos - through Photoshop. Spotlight does search these keywords. The problem is, I also add "Author" data to the photos and I want to be able to search just by keyword - is there any way to narrow the search, or is there a third-party application that will do this. I can search within Photoshop's File Browse, but I am not crazy about the interface.
    Thanks

Assuming you're using the ⌘F interface in Finder - you can select Keywords as a specific criteria option - click on Kind or Last Modified to change. If you give it a few seconds, it generates a list of all the keywords in the index allowing you to pick them from the drop down menu.
Entering the term in the standard search oval, or on the menubar Spotlight offers some ability to narrow the search but its limited.

  • I have ca. 30 pdf documents I need to search for keywords; how can I do on my MAC?

I have ca. 30 pdf documents I need to search for keywords; when I open these documents in Adobe Reader on my MAC, it shows a Search tool; however, when I search for keywords I know are in the document, none are found.  How can I do a keyword search?

Do you know if the text has been OCR recognised? Are the original documents "scans"?
An easy way to find out, if you can select an individual word or letter? If you are selecting a whole block of text then the document will need to be put through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software first to enable you to keyword search.

  • Search result pages problem

When I perform a search on a specific category on these forums, I get the first page of the results. But when I go a next page, I don't get a page with results of my search, but  the results of a search on all categories.

The problem also arises with a single bowser window:
    1) do a search
the first results page is correct
    2) clicking next or a page number gives results from all categories
    3) going back to the first page with results and clicking the search button (redo the current search) fixes the problems, now next and the page number links work correct.
I've traced the problem down to this html:
    <a href="search!execute.jspa?q=sbo&dateRange=last90days&rankBy=10001&start=0"
                                 class="jive-current"
                                 >1</a>
    vs
    <a href="search!execute.jspa?q=sbo&objID=f56&dateRange=last90days&forceEmptySearch=true&rankBy=10001&start=0"
                                 class="jive-current"
                                 >1</a>
The first is the result of a search on the main sbo forum page: SAP Business One SDK
while the second is a result of a search done from the search form where you can specify which forum to search, which date range, user id, etc. (this is the form that is displayed above every page with results.
Both resulting pages look 100% identical, but with the first search, the next pages are wrong. (because objID is missing in the links)
I think this pretty much explains it. Now it's up to somebody else to fix it

  • How do I use search engine keywords?

I'd like to be able to define the search engine to use within the search box. For example, typing "google: firefox help" searches firefox help via Google, and "yahoo: firefox help" searches the same thing via Yahoo. Is this possible? I assume that's what the search engine keywords (in the search engine manager) are for, but I can't figure out how to use them.

I use the keyword on Firefox 4 address bar, not on the search bar. It works!

  • Keyword Problem and a Question.Forfo

For some odd reason, Lightroom assigns a keyword (Tofino) to ALL new imports.  Even though it isn't selected.   A bit aggravating, because I have to got back and change every file after it's imported.  Why is this happening and how do I turn it off?  This has gone on for more than a year!
My other question concerns the Adjustment Brush.  I know there's a simple way of hitting a key to see which areas have been "masked," but I can't figure out how to do it?   Who knows?
    Many thanks.

I very much appreciate the hints on shortcuts and the "o" for the toggle
    mask.
But I still can't figure out the keyword problem.  Any other ideas?  My
issue is that EVERY time I import files from the camera's SD card, it
applies a keyword of TOFINO.  I used that once only.  So I'm puzzled where
to look for this in the pre-sets.  I prowled around last night, but I don't
think I'm looking in the right area.

  • Searching with keywords

Is there a maximum number of keywords allowed? For my purposes I have used many across several events. When I go to search by keywords, the window that appears with the keywords only has the last 176 keywords; only those beginning with "p" through "z" for instance. I'm not able to see names beginning with "a" through "o". There is no scroll bar to access the others.

No there isn't a maximum allowed but the developer's seem not to have considered that people may have more than a screen full of keywords.
    Workarounds:
Use Smart Albums: Keyword -> Is -> Whatever, and of course you can have as many keyword conditions as you like.
Use Keyword Manager which gives you an alternative interface with your keywords that makes assigning and searching easier - among other features.

  • Joe Schorr - When can we expect a fix to the numerous keyword problems?

Joe, when can we expect a fix for the numerous keyword problems? Is this a priority?
There are so many problems that I’ll be very surprised if you can resolve them all on the first attempt. I doubt you have a complete list but I feel safe in saying they’ve all been mentioned here in one form or another. You would be doing yourself and the customers a service if you took the unprecedented step of providing your list so that it can be reviewed for accuracy. I’m finding new problems... or at least I think I am. I hate to waste your time reporting problems others have already reported or worse yet, problems I’ve reported — as I’ve lost track there are so many.
Please let us know what is going on with this. You’ve made progress on the performance issues (though I think I speak for everyone with a PPC system that it’s still not what it should be – and I have a G5 Quad w/7 GB RAM and Quadro FX 4500 card. Aperture should be smokin’ but it’s not...)
I look forward to hearing from you....

I have a 500 GB hard drive; that's how I've avoided the issue, to date. But you consider a 2000 shot bat mitzvah a small shoot, so I have know problem acknowledging you shoot a lot more than I do.
The key point about Aperture, to date, is that it doesn't add ANY data to original RAW files, period. Everything it appears to do -- everything is just a set of modifications to the master. This applies to sharpening, this applies to shadows and highlights, this applies to cropping... and it applies to metadata.
As for archival, etc., ... if you're archiving outside of Aperture... why not just use multiple Aperture libraries? It's a bit inconvenient (to the extent that it takes 15 seconds to change the setting and re-launch), but it gets around the problem. I mean, if you're archiving external to Aperture in original RAW format, you're not only "losing" the metadata... you're losing every single change you've made to the file. Truly, no editing functionality of anything would you be using in this scenario.

  • Bridge CS4 Search Not Displaying NEF Files + Keyword Problems

Hello, I am hoping someone can be of service to peculiar problem that apparently nobody else has had.
I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar
    file.
Two days I ago I changed something in Preferences->Metadata and the next time I started Bridge CS4 and used the loupe tool on a NEF
file, it took longer than usual for the preview to come up and when it did, it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw. I quit the program and the next time I started Bridge, it crashed upon using the loupe tool. I looked up help on Adobe's website and it appeared I had corrupted preferences. Per Adobe's instructions I option clicked at Bridge startup to delete the preferences and purge the cache.
Everything appeared to be normal until today when I searched for a keyword and got 36 random results when I know I have hundreds of
photos tagged with that particular keyword. I started typing in other keywords and getting the same sort of results- very limited numbers of photos I have hundreds of. I always include all subfolders in all searches and used every search method available through Bridge to no avail. The searches always came up with a fraction of the photos I actually have tagged.
I then verified and repaired all disk permissions from the operating system installation CD and Bridge started returning results as
usual. However, when I clicked on an individual file in the Content pane, some of my Keywords started to appear in italics below the rest of my Keyword tree. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why some images will return the Keywords normally and others in italics. Also, sometime the italicized keyword tree will include keywords I edited due to typos and thus no longer existing my normal Keyword tree. I gave the "Make Persistent" command a try. It converts the italics to regular case, but it also doubles the tag so I now have two of that tag (one in the normal keyword tree, and the now converted italics keyword tree.)
Now I'm noticing that all my search results are not including NEF files; just JPEG and the occasional DNG file that I made through Adobe Camera RAW. I'm not sure if this has been the case throughout my problem or if I just noticed it late.
Regarding not displaying NEF files in searches, it appears that it will default to displaying JPEG if it has the option because as of lately I have only been shooting RAW and some of those files are showing up in the still-wonky searches (still displaying random or no photos of keywords.) However, if I manually navigate to a file, I can open and edit NEF files with no problem, they just don't display in any search modes.
Here's two short videos of what happens when I navigate a folder with NEF files by manually searching:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDjUDZzULKQ
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9HkDK7DCs
When I click on a NEF file, the one ahead of it in Content view processes into a more contrasty image and the loupe tool previews jump between 100% and 400% and then change to 100% when dragged or they just process themselves right then and there.

I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
Snow Leopard and Bridge CS4 do have some issues. Some have no problems and others have much problems I'm afraid.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar file.
To my knowledge the keywords are written into the XMP Metadata that is saved in the IPTC section of file itself, the XMP data in the sidecar file contain the changes you made in ACR. In other words, the keywords you have added should still be there.
Also see this Knowledge Base article about Keywords:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402660.html
Two days I ago I changed something in Preferences->Metadata and the next time I started Bridge CS4 and used the loupe tool on a NEF file, it took longer than usual for the preview to come up and when it did, it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%.
Changes metadata in prefs only affects the visability of the fields in the metadata panel. put or deselect a checkmark in front of an option will let you see or not see the field in this panel, the actual data and fields ar still in the file.
it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw.
You can change the magnification for the loupe to 100 / 200 / 400 and 800 % using the scrollwheel or with loupe active the + and - keys. Bridge shows the settings that you made in ACR. If you have changed the default Camera Raw setting it will also change the thumbs for this file. A thumbs needs some time to be cached. First it shows with a black border around, when first cached it shows the embedded preview and in the second round it renders the ACR settings and High Quality preview (if you have not disabled this setting). Caching needs some time.
Everything appeared to be normal until today when I searched for a keyword and got 36 random results when I know I have hundreds of photos tagged with that particular keyword. I started typing in other keywords and getting the same sort of results- very limited numbers of photos I have hundreds of. Maybe you need to let the indexing in find do its work again but it might also be a snow leopard issue. Try an other app (Digital Asset Management like Expresion Media or  Portfolio) to check about the keywording and find. You can use a trial version for several days. You have several options to use find keywords. In the panel itself, in the filterpanel uner the keyword tab, when clicking on a visible keyword it only shows the files with that keyword or in the menu Edit / find (shortcut cmd + F) explore the options in this menu and also choose include non indexed and let Bridge start to index your files again.
    Don't know about that.
Here's two short videos of what happens when I navigate a folder with NEF files by manually searching:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDjUDZzULKQ

As you can see the black border around some file that disappear after a while or when you select them they have not been cached. You used purge cache so most of your earlier cached results are gone and need to rebuild.
