Search/Smart/Spotlight Mailboxes Won't Find URLs in HTML?!

For example, I want to find all the emails in a very large mailbox +(or all of them)+ containing a certain URL somewhere within them.
Dozens of emails contain links with the URL of interest, but when I search for something like:
http://www.domain.com or even www.domain.com
I get zero results even though I search in *Entire Message*. If I leave off the 'www.' and '.com' the search is not specific enough.
If I create a "Smart Mailbox" it likewise comes up empty, though I set it to *Contains Messages that match Any of the following conditions:* and the condition to *_Entire Message_  Contains* *{URL I want}*.
Searching with Spotlight doesn't find emails containing URLs either.
Am I overlooking something?

  • Missing a plugin but when try to search for it , it won't find it.

I am trying to run a chatroom. Whenever I load the page, it says "A plugin is needed to display content" When I click that, it says to do "Java Runtime Environment" When I click next to have it run, it says not available and to try Manual Install. When I try that, nothing works. I've tried to search for that plugin and won't work. I was able to get on this chat site for months until I had to update java about 3 weeks ago. What can I do to fix this?

To protect against potential Java vulnerabilities, Firefox now asks you to activate Java by default, for each website you visit that uses Java. When you see an "Activate Java" message box, simply click it to load the Java content normally.
If there is no visible area to activate Java content in the page, click the plugin icon in the address bar. In the message panel that opens, choose "Allow Now" to enable Java content temporarily.
The next time you visit the site or any other that uses Java you will see this message again. If you want to always activate Java for a particular site, you can use the "Allow and Remember" option shown above.
For more information about using Java in Firefox, see the articles [[How to allow Java on trusted sites]] and [[Use the Java plugin to view interactive content on websites]].
'''Important:''' After activating Java, you may see a security prompt, asking you to confirm that you want to run Java, or you may see an "Application Blocked" message, depending on the website and your security settings in the [http://www.java.com/en/download/help/jcp_security.xml#control%20panel Java Control Panel]. These messages come from Java itself, not from Firefox.
For help with Java security prompts and "Application Blocked" messages, see the Java Help pages [http://www.java.com/en/download/help/appsecuritydialogs.xml What should I do when I see a security prompt from Java?] and [http://www.java.com/en/download/help/java_blocked.xml Why are Java applications blocked by your security settings with the latest Java?]

  • Search and gnome-documents won't find local files

    Hello all,
I can't say for sure whether this behavior started before or after I upgraded to GNOME 3.4. Anyway, this issue is that neither gnome-documents nor the default search from the Activities menu (does that still exist?) can find any of my local files. While I get no results at all from the Activities overview, the Documents application only shows my Google Docs documents. I have already checked tracker-preferences, and all the options seem ok (seeking all relevant directories, always refreshing). Have already tried calling tracker-control -rs and rebooting, too.
Is anyone else having this issue, not being able to perform searches on local files?
    Thank you in advance.
EDIT: also, I have noticed that the tracker process (tracker-miner-fs) is using nearly 1GB of memory, causing the whole system to slow down.

I'm having very similar problems. Local documents do not appear in my search results, and tracker-control --status appears stuck at 1% on my home directory.
Before installing/configuring xdg-user-dirs I had the same gstreamer errors in tracker-extract.log, but those appear resolved. Now I have a LOT of errors similar to the following:
03 May 2012, 21:44:38: Tracker-Critical **: Extraction task for 'file:///home/ryan/Documents/Desktop/Impact%20of%20Climate%20Change%20Water%20Industry.pdf' went rogue and took more than 20 seconds. Forcing exit.
    and
    03 May 2012, 21:46:30: Tracker-Warning **: Content extraction of PDF Timed out
EDIT: spoke too soon; it appears my local files are just taking a long time to index. tracker-control --status now indicates progress and some of the docs are starting to populate search results. HOWEVER, I'm still having the above errors with .pdf files.  Do I need some supporting package (an unlisted dependency) to index .pdf files?

  • TM: Spotlight Won't Find Deleted File

As a test, I created a file just before TM began an hourly backup. After the backup was completed, I deleted the file.
When I open finder and search for the file using spotlight, of course it doesn't find it. When i call up the TM display and click the arrows, it still doesn't find it. In fact, spotlight won't find the file in TM at all. But because I know the exact time and date of the backup that has that file, I can navigate to the exact directory and find it. The file is there, and it only exists in that one backup.
So TM is working, but this isn't exactly the most convenient if you've deleted a file a month ago, have no idea when it was backed up, and can't remember where it was located.
I've tried it with the TM drive both in and out of the spotlight privacy pane--doesn't seem to make any difference. Known issue?

Hmmm, it sounds like Spotlight's DB is corrupt or not functioning properly.
Might give a try with Spotless...

  • Spotlight won't find files in user folder

i have spoken to apple tech support on this and they continue to try to find a solution but.....
i have files that spotlight doesn't find. they are in my user folder. in fact, it won't find the folder (s) one is on my desktop, one in documents. (these are just the ones i've tested). when i take the folder and just put it on the hard drive (root level), spotlight finds it. also, apparently, it can be found when i put it in the user folder of another user. i would like to avoid reinstalling the system. any thoughts??

  • Spotlight won't find old (immigrated) files

    Hi all!
I just recognized that spotlight isn't finding files that were not created on the
actual Mac. I copied lots of folders like clients data etc. to my new Mac when I
switched from my last PPC G5 to the Mac Pro two weeks ago.
Spotlight now works like a charm with all the files created on the MP or some of
the old ones but 98% of my data were just completely ignored by spotlight.
I tried to solve it by reindexing spotlight with the privacy trick, the terminal
and by deleting the -v100 file. Nothing worked out. It's always the same: It just
won't find my old data. I hope you guys can help me out! I installed Easyfind to
exclude the fact that the files are invalid or have wrong permissions or anything
but this small programm is doing it's job without any problems (or indexing) and
a lot faster than spotlight would do.
...but still I want my spotlight to work properly. PLEASE HELP!

The old Apple FindFile used to do it all. Quickly, simply, and reliably. Then someone started taking the funny pills.
A while ago I used Spotless to totally disable Spotlight, remove its index, and then I used Onyx to remove that annoying magnifying glass from the menu bar.
Then I used OneKey to map my F9 key to open EasyFind.
I'm able to do productive work at last without wasting time

Ok somehow this morning all was good. Thanks anyways for the help. If someone in the future is looking for a solution and comes across this, listen up...
I was on the phone with apple when i realized it was working again, the guy said he would have recommended removing the spotlight plist file. I never tried it but that might be a fix.

If you have facing pages, you have to set up the document with facing pages that is what is it for. If you have a spreadwide design as above, keep the spreads together. There is not even one reason not to do so.
Only for wire-O-bindings might a different workflow useful, but also with facing pages documents and only when the left page and the right page have not a spread wide design:
//// I did one mistake, I created a doument with a right binding, but it would work the same way with left binding.)
    1. Create a document with Facing Pages.
    2. Select the Spread in the Page Panel (Window > Page Panel) and in the panel’s flyout menu deselect "Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle". The spread’s page number will appear in brackets.
    3. Select a single page of the spread and drag it to the side until a vertical bar appears.
    4. Now you have the result.
Left and right pages have their own spread and will have a bleed around each page without taking information from the other page.

I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Mail won't find emails in gmail imap account

I'm having this problem since I moved to the Mailboxapp on my iPhone.
I changed the gmail account to using imap instead of pop3.
Now, when I search in the Apple Mail app, it doesn't find messages with the "any" search directive.
E.g. searching "theo" with any, won't show the mails contained in the imap inbox, sent or important folders on the gmail imap.
If I search for "theo" with from, it finds the emails in the in the imap inbox. If I search with to, it finds the ones in the sent imap folder.
    Is this expected behaviour?

Thanks Griff and Eric. I tried both and it's still the same.
It just won't display messages matching the search term in the from field when using the any search.
It will only find them when searching with the from criterion.
I also want to point out that I followed these Instructions for setting up Mail for Mailboxapp:
    http://www.mailboxapp.com/help/client-config/mail.app.html
If you do follow those instructions, "Store draft messages on server", "Store sent messages on server" and "Store junk messages on server" will be checked under the Account settings' Mailbox Behaviors' tab.
But searching *should* still work as expected imho.

  • How to search a specific mailbox in Mail ?

The search results are usually from all boxes and all accounts, which is not what  I want
    Is there a solution ?

You'll get that if you type "how do I search for text" or just "search" or just "find"
At the top level, under Essentials, Search Messages gives you the same as the top hit on Eric's search.
The answer to your original question in the post is given in number 3.
If needed, change your search to vary the results:
    Search a specific mailbox:
Click a mailbox in the Search bar. To search a mailbox that’s not shown, start typing a mailbox name in the search field.
    Search several mailboxes at once:
To search mailboxes that aren’t shown, start typing a mailbox name in the search field, choose the “Message contains:” suggestion, and then choose Mailbox from the token’s pop-up menu. Repeat for each mailbox. Or select the mailboxes in the sidebar before starting your search, and then click Selected Mailboxes in the Favorites bar.
Why is "Search a Message" and "Search a Mailbox" not intuitive?
If I want to find something inside a single message, I would choose "Search a Message."
If I wanted to find a particular message I would choose "Search a Mailbox"
Or, I would type, "find a message" or "search for messages" in the Help search field and the top hit would be turns out to be the answer.
Or, even simpler, since "Search Messages" is the only main item referring to "Searching," I would start there. In that case, it goes right to what you want.
If I really wanted to know about searching for text in a particular message, I would first scroll to the bottom to see what was offered as related topics. Lo and behold, there is a related article that discusses searching in a message.
However, the help files in OS X are not very robust. They never have been. The Macintosh Way is all about trying things out and see what happens. You can always undo (most of the time).
But for people who need to read a book, David Pogue makes a ton of money publishing the Missing Manual series.

  • Yosemite: Saved search from Spotlight does not work the same

    Hi,
I have various Logic Pro folders throughout my computer and want to create a Saved Search that brings all and only the Logic project files together into one place.
There's a couple of catches: the Logic file extension has changed over the years with the various application updates.
It would be nice to create a Smart Folder/Saved Search with something like File Extension:logic OR File Extension:logicx OR File Extension:lso
However if you just add these search criteria as separate lines, it appears they are "AND" filters so nothing shows up at all.
I seem to remember older versions of Smart Folders allowing you to have much more control over boolean search parameters.
After a bit of online investigation I discovered that you can do some more complex searches using Spotlight and then save it as a Smart Folder or Saved Search.
    In Spotlight I used:
Kind:Logic -.0 -(crashed) -.cst -.pst -.prf -.patch -.logikcs
This cleaned out all the extra unneeded files and backups that are associated with Logic and just displayed only my desired .logic, logicx and .lso files.
Awesome! Then I saved it as a Saved Search in the sidebar.
Which doesn't work. Or at least the extra flags don't work. All I am seeing is the Kind:Logic again.
This is how the Spotlight search translates across into the Saved Search window (I can scroll across to see the extra flags). Any good ideas or workable solutions? Thx!

    >
fromObject in the code above is a key (String) that I retrieve from the OrderedHashtable and clone it using the code above.No. How could that code possibly clone a String? Where are you telling it what the new String's contents should be?
    (HINT: Nowhere.)
I guess there is a work around where I can check if the cloneClass is an Instance of String and just do fromObject.toString(), but I was curious to know if there was a change in the way class.newInstance() works in Java 1.5No, it has not changed.

  • Why is the iphone search function spotlight limited in time?

why is the iphone search function spotlight limited in time? I can only find entries that are less than a year old,but I would like to search older entries in my calender, which goes back to 2002. Anyone has a solution for this?

Are you sure that your calendar still contains entries from that long ago? Generally when you sync the iPhone through iTunes, it will only sync entries from a specific time frame. It may be there older entries have been archived and do not exist on the iPhone anymore. Other than that, I don't see any setting that allows modification to the time frame for Spotlight search.
