Second Drive - Best Choice

I'm ordering up a Dual-core 2.3GHz PowerPC G5, and getting it with just the single 250GB internal drive. I want to spend less money to get a second 500GB internal drive. I'm looking for suggestions. I understand that these machines come with SATA-150 controllers in them, so it would be overkill to get a SATA-300 drive. So, what would be the best, most compatible, most reliable 500GB SATA-150 drive to put into the second bay?

Thanks for the helpful recommendation. To expand on an answer, I'd like to know if a SATA-300 drive like that Maxtor is OK to put into a Dual-core 2.3GHz PowerPC G5? It's only a SATA-150 controller in there. Will a SATA-300 drive simply operate at the 1.5GBps rate in this machine? Will I suffer at all for putting a SATA-300 drive in here?

  • Best Choice For Second Internal Hard Drive

    Hello, all...
I currently have a second internal hard drive (170 GB) and want to replace it with a larger one. Do you know what the best choice of manufacturer is for internal hard drives. The one I have now is a Maxtor. I'm looking to replace the 170 GB with a 500 GB.
    Thank you!

    Hi-
Maxtor are good but so are Western Digital and Seagate. I have one of each.
The folowing has a good performance review of 500gb drives from the three makers:

Based on that, and others on the forums will agree, Western Digital is currently the better choice.

  • What is the best choice of hard drives?

My G4 AGP.350MHz with 1.3 GHz upgrade needs an additional internal hard drive for backup. It currently has an 80 GB and 160 GB. I am moving out the 80 GB HDD to my G3 Beige. I am thinking about getting a 80-120 GB for replacement. What is the best choice of hard drives?
Will the 80 GB hard drive, with Mac OS 10.4.4 installed, run in my G3 Beige 233MHz with G4 500MHz upgrade?
    Thanks.

"What is the best choice of hard drives?"
I'm thinking of adding a drive to my G4. I will probably put a 150 MB SATA PCI card in and get a SATA drive. Going from the ATA66 interface to the 150 SATA should be a noticeable improvement.

As long as it's an IDE drive, it should work fine. Be sure you have only one of the drives set as the master, if you have more than one drive.

  • Mac Pro - adding a second 750GB Hard Drive - Best Configuration

I just purchased 2 Mac Pros. For the second one, I plan to use it as a server - thus I'll refer to it as "Mac Pro Server". On this Mac Pro Server, it came with the 250GB hard drive and I purchased a second 750GB hard drive. I plan to backup this total of 1TB to an external 1TB hard drive. I have two of these so I can take one home each week.
I've installed the second 750GB hard drive but I'm not sure the best way to set it up in Disk Utility. Should I keep it a second drive or should I combine it with the 250 to make it a full 1TB? I'll be connecting to the Mac Pro Server server from 3 other Macs in the office mostly moving Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign files.
    What would you suggest?
    Thank you!!
    Zack

    Hi,
Just for safety's sake I would leave the drives seperate, if you use RAID to stripe the drives together, and one subsequently fails you may loose everything.
With the 750GB used for the 'serving' aspects, and regularly backed up you should be safer.
Just make sure you have a safe, backed-up startable volume if downtime would be an issue in case of failure of the 750.

  • When restoring an iPhoto library I got an "unexpected error" message and the operation could not be completed. Is my best choice to try again?

One of my external hard drives died. I had several iPhoto libraries in it. Fortunately, I used Time Machine to backup to a Time Capsule and I can see all the iPhoto library icons in Backups.
When restoring the first iPhoto library, after three hours, I got an "unexpected error" message and the operation could not be completed. Indeed, the restored library is smaller than the library in Backups. Is my best choice to try again and replace the restored library (which apparently must be missing some photos)? It would mean another 3 hours plus of restoration with fingers crossed...
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I am always suspicious of using a different OS to the one that was used to run the backup.. ie if you used Snow L to backup then there is absolutely nothing wrong with using SL to restore.
Mount the TC sparsebundle and verify it using disk utility.
    A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might also like to load the widget in Time Machine so you get whatever the full error message is..
I cannot find any reference to the error code you are getting..
My recommendation would be to try it on a different computer.. restore the whole backup to an external drive large enough to accept the whole backup.
Use the manual methods pondini recommends.

  • Formatting external drive: best practice?

    Hi
I want to erase and reformat an external drive used for video editing with my MBP. I do this so rarely I had a couple questions.
First, in Disk Utilities, where the drives are listed, I should choose the size/mfgr.'s line, not the line where my name appears, rt?
Then, I believe 'Mac OS Extended' is the best choice, not 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)', rt?
Any other tips, tricks or suggested best practices?

    Drive Preparation
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
To just format a drive select the volume (sub-listing under the drive heading) then click on the Erase tab in DU's main window. Select the desired format scheme and click on the Erase button.

I want to send my itunes library from my old macbook (start up disk nearly full) to my new iMac.   Then delete my itunes library from my old macbook.  Is Homesharing my best choice for this?
What I don't want to happen is once I delete my itunes library from my old Macbook that the iMac itunes library to delete itself because I am using Homesharing.  Does homesharing sync and make that happen?

    Here is some help.

After confirming that all your stuff is on the drive, delete the photos you have copied. You will need to empty the iPhototrash to free up the space.

  • The best choice for the 2nd exam

    Hi friends,
I'm going to obtain a certification as Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate and I need to know, for the second exam, what is the best choice for a newbie:
    Program with PL/SQL 1Z0-147
    OR
    Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL/SQL 1Z0-144
    Thank you,

    Hello All,
Next week am going for 1z0-144. Is anybody out there who has already cleared this exams and can help me about the kind of questions asked in it (like more practical or conceptual). Also about any special kind of book he studied apart from steven 4th edition.
    Thanks for your help.
DG.... Well after seeing other replies .... I think you need a bit of encourgement ... so good luck.
I have not actually taken this even.
You MAY glean a little from the JG videos .... (but be aware many will ay it tells them nothing) .... [http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/2009/08/0096.html]
What follows is a little of what you may expect ...
The questions are obviously multiple choice .... at OCA level most will probably indicate the number of correct answers required (as opposed to select all correct answers ... expect to see more of those at OCP/OCE). A few may be drag and drop or something similarly fancy. Some will offer exhibits to be viewed. However there should be enough time for the reasonably able candidate to complete the exam hilst reading questions carefully if they do not daydream.
Most production exams have a set of 10 sample questions (IMHO often not of the highest quality and I am inclined to refer to them as the beta (program) rejects .... questions that didnt make it from the beta exam to the production exam .... and I don't really a justification for that). No such luck with 1z0-144 as far as I can se though.
This is a modern exam; and the questions will probably tend to reflect that. The questions will be most like 1z0-051 questions than 1z0-007 questions.
Therefore the sample questions from 1z0-051 may give a simple insight into the variation of question types o expect [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=303&p_certName=SQ1Z0_051]. (Be aware this is a very small ... and possilby skewed ... sample).
This is probably not what you are looking for .... but is about as far as I can go.
Anyone who has taken the exam is bound by non-disclosure agreements and there is very little anyone can sensibly say without possilby getting themselves into trouble.

  • Best choice for wireless extender

The best choice for a wireless extender or repeater is not to use one at all. I consider it to be an absolute last resort tactic. Imagine that I won’t talk to you so I have to tell someone else to, of course you won’t talk to me either so all the communication has to go through someone else, it really slows down trying to have a conversation and that’s how a wireless extender works. It cuts the bandwidth by 75% under ideal conditions, more in real world conditions.

Spiceheads;I have a need to extend signal from a wireless router in two diffferent scenarios. I asked Google, and he gave me about 471,000 results in 0.46 seconds. Checked some reviews, but I never know which of those are REAL reviews, and which arepaid advertisements. I checked here on Spiceworks, but there is nothing recent that I could find, and these things change quickly. Any suggestions would be appriciated.Scenario 1:This is at my bosses house. He has a commercial grade WiFi router in the garage. I have a Netgear or Linksys USB stick extended from his PC with a USB cable. His signal is pretty low, although the router is pretty near. I suspect there are some thick walls in the house, which is pretty upscale. I can't get to the area where the PC is to run new wire, as it is an addition with no access. I am considering trying a...

  • Second drive dv7-7000

Have 2 DV7s, a 7250nr and a 7259nr.  Need second drives.  What is the HP part(s) and link(s)?  Do those parts work for both?
    Thanks!

    Hi Curt2020,
If I understand you correctly, you are looking for second drives for the HP Envy dv7 Notebook PC's. I will try my best to guide you in this.
In the HP ENVY dv7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide under "Component replacement procedures" are the different components that can be replaced. On page 48 is the list of compatible Hard drive replacements and the instructions on replacing and installing them.
I hope this information helps, please let me know.
Good luck and have a great day!

  • Second drives on Hyper-V guests failing suddenly

In past 2 months or so, we have lost 3-4 Hyper-V guest systems that had a second drive attached via the virtual SCSI adapter. Up until this time, these servers have run flawlessly for 3 years+. The drives appear on the host, but if you try to access
them, they tell you that the disk cannot be found. However, the .vhd is full size and sitting in the SharedCluster storage folder where they belong.
Even if I create a new server or drive from scratch, in short order the second drive becomes unusable, even if I create it as an IDE device instead of SCSI.
I have 2 host servers running 2008 R2 Enterprise connected to a Equallogics SAN via iSCSI in a 2 node cluster.
Oddly, the boot drives seem to not have any issues, on old or new servers. It's only the second drive. Very odd, and scary. Any ideas out there?

    Hi Kevin,
Please check the event log on each cluster node .
Have you restarted the cluster ?
Just one CSV ? I mean that the second drive and boot drive are not on the same LUN ?

  • Best choice as replacement for DVR-104: Pioneer 112D or ??

Need a replacement to my Pioneer DVR-104. Drive mostly doesn't recognize disks anymore. What is the best choice: the Pioneer 112D a good choice or NEC, etc? I thought I read posts with problems with it? I'm kinda surprised it really didn't last all that long considering it started having problems a year ago compared to my older computer's CD burner.

You might want to check out xlr8yourmac's drive database:
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
It's filled with reports by mac users on hard and optical drives
and how they worked out in their machines. It's a very useful
source of information when considering a new drive.
The Pioneer 112 is a favorite among mac users and I am very
happy with mine. The drive is being used in the MacPro by Apple
so it enjoys full I-App support if you are running os 10.4.10.
Lite-On has been having quality control problems for a while so I
would avoid their drives. Many people like the Sony Optiarc drives
but this forum is full of Mac users who have had problems with them
(including myself). Plextor is basically out of business - they are just
putting their name on other people's drives. Samsung's new drives
have gotten some very nice reviews and I'm using a Samsung 182/4,
which is a great cd burner but not quite the dvd burner the Pioneer is.
But again the Pioneer has the advantage as being used by Apple, so
you know it will work with all your mac burning programs, will work as
    a startup disc, etc.

I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up.  Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?

This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
    POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
    Mac style = Volname:foldername:
