Section endnote numbering problems

I had been numbering endnote consecutively throughout a long document - but then discovered that I had to change to numbering them by sections. I've put in section breaks and used the document inspector to instruct the program to start numbering again in each section - but that isn't happening - though the numbers sometime do change in the text, they do not in the endnotes. How do I fix?

Reading through other posts about this, I have found that I have to add a section break in order to make this work, between the title page (1) and the real first page (2). But the problem is whenever I add a section break, it creates an entire blank page for the section break, so I end up with title page, blank page, real first page. Even if I have enough space, etc... every time I create a new section I get a blank page which I cannot type on or use, without deleting the section break and putting me back to square one.
My guess is that an object is embedded in your title page which fools the tool cuttting the document in pages because on my machine, it works flawlessly.
You may activate the "Show Invisibles" function which may help to find if there is an odd character embedded.
Does a section break always do this (add a new blank unuseable page)?
NO, here it doesn't
Just have it be a simple thing somewhere that allows the page (or section) to start at "0")
It would not solve the problem because it would display the number 0 on the first page which is not what you want.
It would not solve the problem for those wanting a numbering starting on page 3 (or on page 4 …)

  • BI Publisher Section Re-numbering problem

I am trying to use BI Publisher add in for MS Word 2010 to create a template for a document which contains sections, headers and footers, page numbering with re-numbering within sections, table of contents, etc. It can be rendered in either .DOC or .PDF format, whichever works.
Two problems I can't get around.
Re-numbering within each section - although I can restart the numbering on a section break and it looks OK in the RTF, when I preview it with BI Publisher the renumbering fails - it fails if I restart numbering at 1, but curiously works if I restart numbering at 2.
I have a table of contents which works OK in the RTF, but when I preview it as RTF/DOC it fails, when I preview as PDF it works OK. I have therefore been using the PDF option, but would prefer to use the RTF/DOC option.
If anyone has come across this problem I would like to know. If anyone has a solution, even better. Grateful for any help.

Thanks for the RTF/DOC suggestion, unfortunately, when viewing using the BI Publisher preview facility, the table of contents is no longer a table of contents and has been rendered as straight text, so updating it (using F9 or other) is not possible, recreating it would be necessary. However, as it works in PDF I can probably stick with that.
Also regarding page numbering, unfortunately I am unable to pass you the document to try out. In essence, however, I have 3 sections set up, and in each one I want to restart numbering at 1, i.e.
first section - page 1, 2,...<number of pages in section 1>
second section - Annex A1, A2,...A<number of pages in section 2>
third section - Annex B1, B2,...B<number of pages in section 3>
Even trying this with a simple test document works ok when setting it up in RTF, but BI Publisher preview, in either PDF or RTF/DOC, reverts to numbering from page 1 upwards. Perhaps this is not supported in BI Publisher?

  • I need to have endnotes at the end with sections and numbering beginning again for each section. I also need to be able to write Chapter

I need to have endnotes at the end with sections and numbering beginning again for each section. I also need to be able to write Chapter #s above each section of endnotes. How do I do this, please?

I have precisely the same problem and am wondering if anyone has found a workaround for what seems to be a bug or an unattended issue in Pages. Hopefully the next update (whenever it arrives, I hope it arrives soon) will take care of this.

  • How do you start endnote numbering over in each section?

How do you start endnote numbering over in each section?

Breaking the threads between sections won't help you, since the endnotes
and the endnote references in the text are completely static, regular
text. (However, if this is a long document, breaking the thread between
sections/chapters can significantly speed up InDesign, and it's one of
the first things I do when working on long docs.)
Now, presumably your endnotes references in the text have a character
style applied to them? Likewise, hopefully your endnote references at
the beginning of each endnote also have a character style applied to
them? If not, the first thing to do is apply a char style to these (make
2 styles -- one for the refs in text, the other for the numbers at start
    of endnotes).
Next, is to find a script that can do maths based on a character style.
Must be one around somewhere...  ... yup, here
    you go:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/free-script-to-change-all-numbers-in-a-document-using-math.php
So, now you just need to run the script, figure out how much to subtract
from each character style for each section so that the first note is 1,
    and Bob's your uncle.

  • Endnotes Numbered By Section but All at end of doc

So I have a large document where each chapter is a different section, this accomplishes one of my aims, which is to have the footnotes numbers reset each chapter. However, I want to publish all the endnotes together at the end of the document rather than the end of chapter (ie section). Is there a way to do this or to organize a hierarchy of sections (endnotes at the end of the master section, numbers begin anew at each minor section)?
    Thanks
    iWork Pages '09

Not that know. You have the choice of having footnotes aat the bottom of each page, the end of the section or at the end of the document, but each choice sets the numbering.
A way around it might be to copy the footnotes and paste them at the end of the document manually.

  • Section endnotes renumbering

I am having trouble with endnote numbers in Pages (v2.0.1). I have a large document with several sections (chapters) each with its own set of endnotes. What I would like to have is each chapter range from 1–n, then restart at 1 for the next chapter/section. I can set the notes to "Use Document Endnotes" in the "Document" section of the inspector, and change "Numbering" to "Restarts for Each Section." Pages takes a moment and dutifully changes — stays that way a moment, then changes back! You can recreate this problem by opening a new document, put in text and footnote or two, put in section breaks, change to endnotes and numbering to “by section,” and the renumbering doesn’t “stick.” Any ideas or workarounds?
(I won’t even get into the inability to have a note that is greater to than a page is disconcerting, or that changes in the endnotes take a full 30 seconds to register. I’ll leave these for hopes for the upgrade.)
    iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

InDesign does not support endnotes (and by extension, endnote renumbering). It imports endnotes as plain text.
That said, it seems to me it's an error that ID does not take the original numbering into account, even though it is converted to text later on. I think your best bet is on converting the endnotes to plain text in the original Word document.
Alternatively, you could convert the "notes" to 'semi-endnotes', using cross references. Bob Bringhurst explains it all in his blog: http://blogs.adobe.com/indesigndocs/2009/03/endnotes_in_indesign_cs4.html -- nearing the bottom he points out a script to automate part of it.
[Post-Edit thought] That assumes, by the way, you can restart the cross reference numbering at will. I haven't checked these out enough to tell top-of-head.

  • Microsoft Word Footnote Numbering Problems

I have a long manuscript that's been edited. It's in MS Word 2004, although I've tried converting to the latest Word and that didn't help.
If I edit out a section that includes a note, my footnote/endnote numbering goes wrong. If I take out note #6, I cannot have a note 6 and so the notes go from 5 to 7. Microsoft's Mac help is worthless. Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried changing symbols, etc. I've deleted whole sections thinking there's something hidden, etc.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Is there any way to display document page numbers and section page numbers at the same time?

Hi, I have different sections within my document starting the page numbering at 1. Besides the section page numbers I would also like to display the actual document page numbers in the header (eg. you are on page 10 of the document and page 4 of the section). Is there any way to do that? Thanks

You can maybe use the Find/Change
    Command+i
See if that can work for you.
But like Steve said it is good practice to use Paragraph Style whenever you have lots of Type, I just get lazy sometimes.. lol
    Thanks

  • Office 2010 mail merge with section breaks printing problem

    Afternoon all,
We have an issue and I was wondering if anyelse has come across this and has a solution
Our office staff do many mail merges and once the merge is complete they then can print the whole document with no problems or select one page and do print current page. The problem occurs when trying to print a range i.e. pages 5-7. Once you click print nothing happens, no errors and nothing comes out the printer.
What I have found is that the mail merge is putting in section breaks between each page to seperate them but if I change these to page breaks in the document then I can select pages 5-7 and it prints with no problems.
So the only solution I have found so far is to do a find/replace and find all ^b (section break) and replace with ^m (page break). This is obvioulsy takes more time and is a pain if we have to do this for every mail merge.
I can't find any setting in the mail merge to tell it to use page breaks instead of sections breaks
Has anyone else come across this probem, is it a office bug ???
    Any help would be great
    Darren

    John,
Replying to your posts works just fine. You can choose to reply to either of the other posts & address both in your comments just as you did. I see quite a few threads where the OP (original poster) posts a reply to each & every one who has replied. I think it makes it very difficult to find the actual answers.

  • How can I fix my page numbering problem?

I am creating a catalog in InDesign. Master pages were set up so the left and right pages had the page numbers in the lower outside corners.
Today I moved some pages around, and as a result the left side pages are now right side, and vice versa.
The problem I am facing is that on some of the pages, the page number is now in the inside corner, and on some of the pages, the page numbers are on both the inside and outside corners.  The numbering is correct, but the positions are wrong.
    I tried:
    1. Overwriting all master page items for the page, then trying to delete or move the page number, but there is a faint yellow box around the number and it cannot be deleted or removed.
    2. Applying the correct master page to the page I am trying to fix; this works in some cases, but in others it just places the new text boxes on top of the old ones.
Any help would be appreciated! I am using CS6 on a Mac. My master pages include a text box at the top, a blank box to show the page with bleed, and a page number indicator.

After I resist the temptation to ask why you're transcoding to ProRes in mid-stream, all I can come up with is:
Need more info on the error circumstances
    OR
You could batch the source clips in Compressor and start over
    OR
    Try smaller batches
    OR
Trash your prefs, repair permissions, and try again

  • List numbering problem

I am trying to do the following type of list:
    a.  Step
    b.  Step
    c.  Step
        1. Sub step
        2. Sub step
    d.  Step
I am controlling the numbering in the EDD.  My problem is that step d defaults to 'c' instead of d and I have to manually change it from <a+>.\t  to  <a=4>.\t.   Steps 1 and 2 are set to <n=1>.\t and <n+>.\t.  So why doesn't the next alpha list pick up on the last alpha list instead of the last numeric list?  Is there any way to fix this?  Thanks!  JW

A FrameMaker SGML EDD can define context rules that manage the numbering instead of using paragraph formats. There are also element qualifiers that test whether a list item is first, notfirst, last, notlast, and so on that apply numbering properties, so, for example, you can move a list element from the front or end or middle of a list to one of the other positions and the formatting will adjust. This is useful when the first and last list items need different space before/after and the first item needs to start at 1, or alphabetic equivalent.
I'm not using structure, so my suggestion may not apply in XML or DITA development. You can read about formatting rules in the Structure Applications Developer's Guide that you can find by clicking Structured Application Development in the Welcome Screen that appears when no document is open in FrameMaker 9 (can't remember 8).

  • Numbers problem after updates

I bought numbers from the app store.
After updates and reboot, the app will not save or print.
it is telling me my free trail period is over, and i need to purchase?

Prior to buying Numbers from the Mac app store, you also downloaded and installed the 30 day trial of iWork. When you installed Numbers, you neglected to uninstall the iWork trial, OR did remove the iWork package, but did not remove the associated files created by that package.
The easiest way to do that uninstall is by using the AppleScript available in the Public section of Yvan Koenig's Box account. From the linked page, got to: for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 > uninstall iWork 09.zip
Download, unzip and run the AppleScript to perform a complete install (this does NOT affect files that you created using the iWork trial), the reinstall Numbers from the Mac app store.

  • Numbers problem by grouping datas

Hi, I have  a problem with the newest Numbers. I can not find a way to grouping my Datas, as in Excel 2 seconds data/ subtotal in the Numbers I did not find. I have tried many different ways, but I can not use the buttons by arrange/ grouping. Anybody? Have anybody met this problem too before? How can I use the data grouping?

you can add a summary table that conditionally sums by catagory like this:
the table on the left contains the list of transactions (and need not be sorted).  The table on the right is a new table that summrizes the information in the Data table.
    For the table "Summary":
Column A contains the Category names and column B computes totals.
    B2=SUMIF(Data::$B, A2, Data::$C)
this is shorthand for select cell B2 and type (or copy and paste from here) the formula:
    =SUMIF(Data::$B, A2, Data::$C)
select B2 and fill down as needed
