Secure ftp of files stored in a directory on the operating system

Is it possible to secure ftp files directly from the server without first storing them in the flows database? (Apex 3.2; Oracle 10g 10.2.0.4; Oracle Unbreakable Linux 4). If so, are there security issues?

Hi ,
Use EPS_GET_DIRECTORY_LISTING
Refer the below code I have used in one of my assignment.

            too_many_read_errors   = 6
            empty_directory_list   = 7

  • List files stored in a Directory Object

    Hi,
I looked on Google, on Oracle DB docs and here to find a convenient way to list files stored in a DIRECTORY for batch loading in a table with PL/SQL. But no luck, UTL_FILE doesn't seem to have a method for directory listing. I saw examples with some workaround like putting files list in a text file prior to loading. The directory is feeded by other process and network services, so I don't know the filelist that I need to import and, then delete. I dont have access to the server console and it's impossible for me to dump a kind of «dir» result into a text file. I saw other examples using Java, but it looks like I don't have access to Server Side Java too.
Is there a simple way to do that in PL/SQL only?
If not, I'll ask to the DBA the necessary rights to compile/run java on the server side...
The DB target versions for this requirement are 10g and 11g (mainly) on Windows environment.
    Thanks
    Bruno

The XUTL_FINDFILES seems to be the more convenient way. If that works for you, I certainly have no objection. In a lot of environments, though, that package would be problematic.
    1) It must be installed in the SYS schema. That's generally frowned upon and lots of sites would never allow user code to go into the SYS schema. Chris is a bright guy, so I'm sure the risk of it causing harm is minimal (most likely during an install or upgrade), and it will almost certainly never cause you harm, but that would be a political show-stopper at a lot of places.
    2) The package body is wrapped (if there is a version with the package body in clear text, this point is moot). Again, Chris is a well-respected guy, so I have every confidence that the code is not malicious, but asking a DBA to install a wrapped package you downloaded from the internet into the SYS schema on a production database should generate a crud-load of red flags. This is almost certainly just a theoretical danger, but DBAs and audit compliance regulations care a great deal about theoretical dangers. If someone hacked the web site and uploaded their own wrapped bit of code that had a back door, for example, it would be very hard to catch.
    3) Under the covers, the package is querying one of the undocumented X$ views. Oracle is free to change those views over time, which would potentially cause the package to stop working or stop working correctly in some way. If you're developing code for a system that may be around for a number of years, that becomes a concern. It's unlikely that Oracle will change the particular X$ view that is being referenced here over the lifetime of your code base, but it's more than a trivial concern.
    4) The package is determining what directories a user has access to, that's not Oracle enforcing the restriction. Probably not too big a deal, but it is probably safer from a regulatory compliance standpoint to be able to rely on Oracle the database enforcing privileges rather than relying on a delivered package to enforce those privileges. It's the difference between telling Oracle via specific grants which directories the JVM can access vs. writing your own wrapper that enforces those restrictions. In the end, the restrictions are enforced, but in one case you're relying on the developers of the Oracle database and in the other you're relying on external developers.
Just to re-iterate-- Chris is a brilliant guy, I don't mean this in any way to impugn him or his code. I am totally confident that his code works, that it works well, and that it will continue to work going forward. My concerns are purely on the political/ regulatory side of things, not on the technical side of things. Technically, I am confident that the code is top-notch.

Purchased a used macbook pro with Mountain Lion. My old Mac runs Snow Leopard is backed up to Time machine. How do I register the operating system to me and how do I use Time Machine to move my files to the new used computer?

If you look at the User Tips tab, you will find a write up on just this subject:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4053
The subject of buying/selling a Mac is quite complicated.  Here is a guide to the steps involved. It is from the Seller's point of view, but easily read the other way too:
    SELLING A MAC A
Internet Recovery, and Transferability of OS & iLife Apps
    Selling an Old Mac:
    • When selling an old Mac, the only OS that is legally transferable is the one that came preinstalled when the Mac was new. Selling a Mac with an upgraded OS isn't doing the new owner any favors. Attempting to do so will only result in headaches since the upgraded OS can't be registered by the new owner. If a clean install becomes necessary, they won't be able to do so and will be forced to install the original OS via Internet Recovery. Best to simply erase the drive and revert back to the original OS prior to selling any Mac.
    • Additionally, upgrading the OS on a Mac you intend to sell means that you are leaving personally identifiable information on the Mac since the only way to upgrade the OS involves using your own AppleID to download the upgrade from the App Store. So there will be traces of your info and user account left behind. Again, best to erase the drive and revert to the original OS via Internet Recovery.
    Internet Recovery:
    • In the event that the OS has been upgraded to a newer version (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion), Internet Recovery will offer the version of the OS that originally came with the Mac. So while booting to the Recovery Disk will show Mountain Lion as available for reinstall since that is the current version running, Internet Recovery, on the other hand, will only show Lion available since that was the OS shipped with that particular Mac.
    • Though the Mac came with a particular version of Mac OS X, it appears that, when Internet Recovery is invoked, the most recent update of that version may be applied. (i.e. if the Mac originally came with 10.7.3, Internet Recovery may install a more recent update like 10.7.5)
    iLife Apps:
    • When the App Store is launched for the first time it will report that the iLife apps are available for the user to Accept under the Purchases section. The user will be required to enter their AppleID during the Acceptance process. From that point on the iLife apps will be tied to the AppleID used to Accept them. The user will be allowed to download the apps to other Macs they own if they wish using the same AppleID used to Accept them.
    • Once Accepted on the new Mac, the iLife apps can not be transferred to any future owner when the Mac is sold. Attempting to use an AppleID after the apps have already been accepted using a different AppleID will result in the App Store reporting "These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID".
    • It appears, however, that the iLife Apps do not automatically go to the first owner of the Mac. It's quite possible that the original owner, either by choice or neglect, never Accepted the iLife apps in the App Store. As a result, a future owner of the Mac may be able to successfully Accept the apps and retain them for themselves using their own AppleID. Bottom Line: Whoever Accepts the iLife apps first gets to keep them.
    SELLING A MAC B
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
    A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
    1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
    2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
    3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
    side.
    4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
    sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
    3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
    5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
    A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
    1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
    2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    4. Install OS X.
    5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
    6. Shutdown the computer.
    B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
    1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
    Utilities window appears.
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
    3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
    6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
    7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

I have one folder on an XSAN that one machine can not make changes to. Whenever I try to duplicate or copy a file in this folder I get 'The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).'
The permissions are fine, and I have trashed the finder plist and reset the NVRAM.
    Anyone have a answer?
    Thanks

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.
    (will post progress)

  • How can i re-install the operating system without deleting my files on the computer

I'm Trying to re-install the operating system on my macbook, and i dont know, if i can only re-install the OS without deleting the Data on the computer.

If the Snow Leopard version on your Snow Leopard DVD is lower than the Snow Leopard version on your computer, you will NOT in any case be able to re-install the OS the way you want it. You will only be able to erase your disk and then reinstall the OS.
It will only "upgrade" and keep your files if the Mac OS X version of your Snow Leopard DVD is newer than the Snow Leopard version on your computer.

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

  • Secure Erase of files stored on file server

    Hi there
Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but here goes...
I have client machines set up for 'Secure Empty Trash', but is there a way I can ensure the same erase 'level' of files that are deleted from the file server (running OSX Server 10.5)? Currently when files stored on the server are dragged to the trash a message pops up saying that they will be deleted immediately, but is there any way to set these to be deleted 'securely' like the desktop machines?
    Thanks

If your server is sufficiently breached, you're toast.
    As for options and considerations...
There's a free-space erasure within Disk Utility. (I'd be paranoid around running any of this stuff near my not-erased data, but that's another discussion.)
There are encrypted partitions, and various software-based encryption schemes.
Removable locked storage can be a possibility here, but that only works if the disk with the sensitive data doesn't eventually end up co-resident on the breached server.
There are encrypting disk drives around. WinMagic was one of the few solutions that tied into full-disk hardware encryption on Mac, though there are potentially others around.
There are outboard hardware controllers, but they're probably out of your price range.
If your server is hacked by a sufficiently determined attacker, then only something like per-file file-based encryption might help, and only if the attacker can't capture the decryption keys for the individual files. Which is why various organizations will partition critical servers physically offline, or will create trusted (sub)networks; configurations entirely disconnected from all other networks.
(There really isn't a good perimeter these days. There are attacks via authorized clients connecting via VPN or web sites that seek to back-connect from clients out through your firewall, or compromised clients on your LAN, or spearfishing, can cause mayhem. All sorts of ugly.)
Security is like insurance. You probably want some of that, and not too little of it and definitely not too much security. And you can spend an infinite amount on it and one sufficiently egregious mistake can still invalidate your whole scheme.
If this is a legal or procedural requirement, I'd suggest discussing this with somebody that knows FIPS-140 or HIPAA or whatever particular requirements you're dealing with here, and security, and Mac OS X.

  • How to create security for flat files under a Webserver Directory?

    Hello,
I have an Application where I need to show a Flat Excel File (with open/save option) from a URL from Portal.
    This works fine.
But a user can view this file without login to Portal.
Though we restricted the directory, file access is uncontrolled.
    What should we do?
    Thanks
    Madhav

I mean, how to enforce Login to Portal on flat files in the Web Server Directory(if the users are accessing directly from URL), they should be accessible as long as they logged into Oracle Portal. But right now, they can access by typing the URL for this flat file directly into browser.
    Thanks for your time
