Security of data in extended PDFs

I am anticipating a project in which external users would download extended PDFs from our web site and fill them in and submit them, at which time the data would be written to an internal SQL db. Much of the data to be submitted is confidential business information. How secure is the data in transit, and if it is not, how can it be made secure?

To make the data secure, as with any other web submission like credit
card numbers on a web store, use a secure server and httpS rather than
http.

  • Secure Form Data on Emailed PDF Form

    I am preparing an email-able PDF registration & payment form for a conference.  The registrants are generally low-tech so using a form with a "submit form" or email form button will totally throw them off if they have older versions of Reader.
    I'd like to be able to use a form they can receive by email or download from our website, fill it out - including credit card info - and email it back - but obviously securely.
    Is and how is this possible?
    Thank you!

    The security requirement is the problem when using email, which is generally not secure.
    I would not send such a form unless I knew it was being securely  submitted to a web server or securely uploaded to a web server (e.g.,  yousendit.com).

  • Reader Extended PDF not working for some users

    I've created a document in Adobe X Pro and saved it as a Reader Extended PDF with Enabled Commenting & Markup. Most users are having no problem adding comments (by attaching a file) but I have a few users having issues (one with Adobe Reader 9 for Mac and one with Adobe Reader X for Windows). They are seeing the bar at the top telling them they cannot save data in the form, and they do not have access to any of the commenting or markup features.
    Thoughts?

    Which web browsers are they using to download the PDF file?  If you send them the Extended PDF file via email are they able to connect to the Shared Review?

  • How do I input data to a pdf form in Acrobat 8.1.6?

    There's probably a simple solution for this but I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out how to input data to a pdf form using Acrobat 8.1.6, or how I can make the pdf file data field input ready? Thanks.

    If you created the form Go back to Acroabt and go to advanced menu and choose:
    Extend Features in Reader. then save.
    Now open Reader and you can add information and save. (limit 500 instances per pdf).
    Now if you created the form and have Acrobat make sure Acrobat in not in Forms Edit Mode.
    Just type in your information and save.
    Caution make sure that you finished all corrections and edits. because once you confer reader right you can not edit the form. you can edit the form items you fill in, but not the form itself.
    to correct the form design you have to go back to advanced reader rights and save a copy without rights. make changes then confer rights again.

  • How can I embed XML data in a PDF?

    I want to embed XML data in a PDF so the file can be scanned for the data behind the document. Is there a standard way to do this?
    For example, if the PDF is a bank statement, the embedded XML would be the individual's account number and bank balances. It would not include any of the standard text in the statement such as the bank name, etc.
    I've read up on the XMP spec but that seems to be more metadata about the document (title, subject, etc.). And there is tagged content but that is an alternate view of the entire document.
    ??? - thanks - dave

    Although the XMP block is stored in XML, you can't just embed any XML file. The block has to follow the standard, which means that each data packet needs to be defined in a schema - as the name suggests, XMP is eXtendable so you can define new schema for local use, but you can't mess about with the standard ones and randomly add new tags. The schema itself isn't embedded in the file, it's referenced by a unique ID and URI. of course having a data packet in a custom schema doesn't mean any software will see it - Acrobat's Advanced Search can be told to scan the XMP block but  search engines only tend to bother with the basic tags such as 'title' and 'description'.
    To see what's currently in a PDF, open Document Properties > Description > Additional Metadata > Advanced.
    You can save the current XMP block as a text file (.xmp extension), and replace/append other XMP files. If you click the "i" icon on the top right of the Advanced dialog you can access system profiles - these can be created in other applications such as Bridge, but there's no profile manager in Acrobat itself.
    For technical information on working with XMP and creating new schema, see http://www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp.html
    Note that the XMP SDK for CS6 does not work in the Acrobat Family.

  • Data saved from PDF form printable but not readable?

    I created a Reader extended PDF to send out to clients to collect data.
    I must have done something wrong as when the forms are coming back, they forms are populated in OSX Preview, but not when opening the PDF in Acrobat.
    When the form is printed, all data displays correctly.
    Is this something to do with the way the form fields are formatted?
    any help appreciated!!! Thank You

  • How to export sql table data to Excel/PDf using Storedprocedure?

    Hi ,
            I have one table in sqlserver2008R2 that named "Customer" so that table hold the 1 Lac rows. Now I want send this table data to Excel/pdf with Columns using Storedprocedure.
       I have tried this using xp_cmdshell so This is not working for me.
    finally i want to get data in Excel and pdf also.
    Please guide me

    You can actually run an Excel Macro to grab the data from the SQL Server DB.  Below are some samples.
    Sub ADOExcelSQLServer()
    ' Carl SQL Server Connection
    ' FOR THIS CODE TO WORK
    ' In VBE you need to go Tools References and check Microsoft Active X Data Objects 2.x library
    Dim Cn As ADODB.Connection
    Dim Server_Name As String
    Dim Database_Name As String
    Dim User_ID As String
    Dim Password As String
    Dim SQLStr As String
    Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
    Set rs = New ADODB.Recordset
    Server_Name = "Excel-PC\SQLEXPRESS" ' Enter your server name here
    Database_Name = "Northwind" ' Enter your database name here
    User_ID = "" ' enter your user ID here
    Password = "" ' Enter your password here
    SQLStr = "SELECT * FROM dbo.Orders" ' Enter your SQL here
    Set Cn = New ADODB.Connection
    Cn.Open "Driver={SQL Server};Server=" & Server_Name & ";Database=" & Database_Name & _
    ";Uid=" & User_ID & ";Pwd=" & Password & ";"
    rs.Open SQLStr, Cn, adOpenStatic
    ' Dump to spreadsheet
    With Worksheets("sheet1").Range("a1:z500") ' Enter your sheet name and range here
    .ClearContents
    .CopyFromRecordset rs
    End With
    ' Tidy up
    rs.Close
    Set rs = Nothing
    Cn.Close
    Set Cn = Nothing
    End Sub
    Sub ADOExcelSQLServer()
    Dim Cn As ADODB.Connection
    Dim Server_Name As String
    Dim Database_Name As String
    Dim User_ID As String
    Dim Password As String
    Dim SQLStr As String
    Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
    Set rs = New ADODB.Recordset
    Server_Name = "LAPTOP\SQL_EXPRESS" ' Enter your server name here
    Database_Name = "Northwind" ' Enter your database name here
    User_ID = "" ' enter your user ID here
    Password = "" ' Enter your password here
    SQLStr = "SELECT * FROM Orders" ' Enter your SQL here
    Set Cn = New ADODB.Connection
    Cn.Open "Driver={SQL Server};Server=" & Server_Name & ";Database=" & Database_Name & _
    ";Uid=" & User_ID & ";Pwd=" & Password & ";"
    rs.Open SQLStr, Cn, adOpenStatic
    With Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("A2:Z500")
    .ClearContents
    .CopyFromRecordset rs
    End With
    rs.Close
    Set rs = Nothing
    Cn.Close
    Set Cn = Nothing
    End Sub
    Sub TestMacro()
    ' Create a connection object.
    Dim cnPubs As ADODB.Connection
    Set cnPubs = New ADODB.Connection
    ' Provide the connection string.
    Dim strConn As String
    'Use the SQL Server OLE DB Provider.
    strConn = "PROVIDER=SQLOLEDB;"
    'Connect to the Pubs database on the local server.
    strConn = strConn & "DATA SOURCE=(local);INITIAL CATALOG=NORTHWIND.MDF;"
    'Use an integrated login.
    strConn = strConn & " INTEGRATED SECURITY=sspi;"
    'Now open the connection.
    cnPubs.Open strConn
    ' Create a recordset object.
    Dim rsPubs As ADODB.Recordset
    Set rsPubs = New ADODB.Recordset
    With rsPubs
    ' Assign the Connection object.
    .ActiveConnection = cnPubs
    ' Extract the required records.
    .Open "SELECT * FROM Categories"
    ' Copy the records into cell A1 on Sheet1.
    Sheet1.Range("A1").CopyFromRecordset rsPubs
    ' Tidy up
    .Close
    End With
    cnPubs.Close
    Set rsPubs = Nothing
    Set cnPubs = Nothing
    End Sub
    Finally, you can run a SProc in SQL Server, from Excel, if you want the SProc to do the export.
    Option Explicit
    Sub Working2()
    'USE [Northwind]
    'GO
    'DECLARE @return_value int
    'EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[TestNewProc]
    ' @ShipCountry = NULL
    'SELECT 'Return Value' = @return_value
    'GO
    Dim con As Connection
    Dim rst As Recordset
    Dim strConn As String
    Set con = New Connection
    strConn = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;"
    strConn = strConn & "Data Source=LAPTOP\SQL_EXPRESS;"
    strConn = strConn & "Initial Catalog=Northwind;"
    strConn = strConn & "Integrated Security=SSPI;"
    con.Open strConn
    'Put a country name in Cell E1
    Set rst = con.Execute("Exec dbo.TestNewProc '" & ActiveSheet.Range("E1").Text & "'")
    'The total count of records is returned to Cell A5
    ActiveSheet.Range("A5").CopyFromRecordset rst
    rst.Close
    con.Close
    End Sub
    Sub Working()
    'USE [Northwind]
    'GO
    'DECLARE @return_value int
    'EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[Ten Most Expensive Products]
    'SELECT 'Return Value' = @return_value
    'GO
    Dim con As Connection
    Dim rst As Recordset
    Set con = New Connection
    con.Open "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=LAPTOP\SQL_EXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
    Set rst = con.Execute("Exec dbo.[Ten Most Expensive Products]")
    'Results of SProc are returned to Cell A1
    ActiveSheet.Range("A1").CopyFromRecordset rst
    rst.Close
    con.Close
    End Sub
    Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

  • Data Extraction from PDF

    I am creating a large PDF form that people will fill out, save, and return to us. I am wondering if there is a simple method to extract the data from the PDF and store the values in a database (excel or access).
    I can program in java if needed, but I'd prefer a simpler solution if one exists.

    Niall is correct for a direct-connected form. But there are a wider variety of choices that you may want to play with:
    Use the distribute and collect features of forms in Acrobat and Acrobat.com.  This gives an automated way to bring all of the data together for you.  You can see this at http://formcentral.acrobat.com/ or Tools/Forms/Distribute in Acrobat X.
    Directly connect your form as Niall suggested; you'll need to reader-extend with the server product to enable this data access with Reader, or use full
    Gather the data results from form submissions (HTTP post)
    Extract the data out of reader-extended full forms sent back.  LiveCycle has a service called Form Data Integration, but there are also opensource toolkits that can extract the data. Also, LiveCycle (now ADEP) can build full processes around the data, but that may be much more than you are looking for.
    You may want to start with Acrobat.com's capabilities to see if this is sufficient.

  • Merging reader extended pdfs

    I need to merge pages from two existing reader extended pdfs that have been filled in to create a report featuring responses from these seperate documents, each time I try to do this all the information entered into the first two PDFs disappears.
    Do reader extended pdfs allow you to do this or is it frustratingly impossible?

    The problem is that the field names in the files are the same, and fields
    with the same name will have the same value. So when you merge the files,
    the data from all of the files (except for one, probably the first or last
    one in the list) is going to be lost.
    The solution is to flatten the files first (which you can do in an Action
    if you have Acrobat Pro), to remove the form fields and make the their
    contents static. Then you'll be able to merge them without losing any data.

  • Saving a .pdf Created in Flare9 as Reader Extended PDF

    When I first installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro and built .pdfs from Flare, I was able to save the .pdf with the "Reader Extended PDF" function. Now, that capability is no longer available and in order to access this feature I must save the .pdf and open X Pro, open the saved document and save, again, as X Pro. However, the actual commenting feature seems to be "hosed," and, in my capacity as a technical writer, this has gotten a bit frustrating. Is there something in the properties of X Pro that I need to reset? Thank you.

    Not sure I understand the isssue. How were you building PDF files from Flare and getting a "Reader Extended PDF"?  Was this a menu or option in Flare?  For Acrobat it's always been either Save as [Extended Option], Send for Shared Review, or LiveCycle Reader Extension Server to get an Extended PDF file.  Also, if your users have Adobe Reader XI, they can comment with Sticky Notes and Highlighters by default now.

  • How to read data from the PDF file

    Hi
    i need pdf related API details and sample program to retrive the data from the pdf.

    Did you even try looking this one up yourself? Google "java pdf" and you get plenty of results. The first one looks pretty promising, and I'm sure there is plenty of documentation with the API.

  • Need guidance entering my own data in a PDF file

    Please refer to this example:
    http://www.gnupdf.org/Introduction_to_PDF
    I am trying to teach myself PDF internals. My immediate objective is to save some private data in my PDF files. My data is structured as "variable/value" pairs but I chose not to save it as custom properties because of its bulk and the possibility of confusion and undesired manipulation by the end user.
    The above example immediately suggests that I should use an object of "dictionary" type. Let's try to assemble the file manually:
    44 0 obj
    <<
      (Favorite Baseball Team) (Boston Red Sox)
      (Age) (35)
      (Planet of Birth) (Klingon)
    >>
    endobj
    Is the above initial attempt correct? I will of course use the corresponding API to create the dictionary, but I am concerned about breaking things. Won't Acrobat get confused when it finds this foreign stuff?
    TIA,
    -Ramon

    Hi Leonard,
    Thanks for your always valuable help. FYI, my data is of a global nature. I suppose I should come up with some unique name ("MyPrivateData" or something) and place such entry in the Catalog?
    This thread brings up a related topic. It is about the uniqueness of the JavaScript namespace. My PDF files are generated automatically and JavaScript code is added to them. I haven't done any tests yet, but I foresee the following problem: those generated PDF files may end up being merged with each other which brings the potential of namespace conflicts.
    Let's say that the first JS-laden document has 3 pages and another one has 2 pages. I suppose there is no way to restrict it like: "this JS code applies to the first 3 pages only". As soon as the 2 documents are merged all the JS code (and worst of all: the variable and function names) applies to the 5 combined pages, correct?
    There are 2 possible solutions:
    - Perhaps there is a way to declare some JS code as belonging to one page only?
    - Use collections. This brings a whole new layer of complexity and expense.
    Thanks again,
    -Ramon
