Seeking book recommendation for DBA best practices

Good afternoon,
I've been reading a lot of documentation on Oracle and learning quite a number of commands and different ways of doing things. The problem is knowing the commands is one thing, creating the context where they are appropriate/best is another.
I am looking for a book where the authors share their experience as to "how to do it right" as far as database configuration, backups and all the "details" that are involved in setting up a sound, reliable, robust, manageable and productive environment. A book where the authors would present the "why" do it this way and not the other would be great.
Effectively, I want to gain "experience" vicariously ;)
Thank you for your help,
John.

Hi John,
I am sure that you would like the Scaling book. Reason for that is the snippet of information that you have mentioned about your past work, the book goes into great detail of internals. As I said internals and you do research a lot, bookmark this site http://www.ixora.com.au (Steve Adams) and also get his book,
http://www.amazon.com/Oracle8i-Internal-Services-Latches-Memory/dp/156592598X
Fair warning that lots of stuff has undergone many changes since the book is written and Steve doesn't update the site also now but still, both are a very valuable resource to get into the deep of (some) things and get more clarity.
I am too small to say anything about Jonathan, all I can say that he is just great! His book Practical Oracle 8i is really very good and also, you should bookmark his blog and site, http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com and www.jlcomp.demon.co.uk. I would strongly suggest to read the co-operative FAQ from his website, http://www.jlcomp.demon.co.uk/faq/ind_faq.html
Yes, its not correct to attribute something as a best practice given the fact that rarely, two environments would be essentially same. That's why I don't like to call anything as a best practice because when I say that in my sessions, it spreads a message that it must be done but actually the answer (mostly) is may (or may not) be . I suggest to know more about Oracle db's work, know what it can do, what are the tools it provides and then use them all wisely :) . Not sure how much I am correct :) .
Regards
Aman....

  • Book Recommendation for Fathers Day?

I'm waiting for Illustrator CS4 Wow! to come out here in the UK as my next book purchase and I already have a couple of basic manual replacement books which I am steadily ploughing through.  I wonder if anyone could suggest a couple of titles I could give to my kids to distract them from the inevitible cheap aftershave alternative?
I would like either a book that discusses more intermediate issues in Illy rather than the kind of very basic manual replacement books or if you're up for it, suggest a couple of illustration techniques that might be useful and help with my drawing.  I realised pretty quickly that a) Photoshop isn't good at taking your photos, b) Dreamweaver isn't that good at writing your code and c) Illustrator isn't up to drawing your drawings - Maybe a clickable "Inspiration Panel" should be a feature request?
So either any recommendations for drawing techniques that would be useful for digital art and/or recommendations for interemediate level Illustrator techniques?
    Many thanks
    Martin

Thanks for the suggestion but that's one of the books I already have
and think it's one of the best Adobe Software help books I have out of
all of them.  It's really well written and covers a lot of material in
a practical way.  The other Illustrator book I have is by Deke
McClelland which I find to be more like a reference manual than Mordy
    Golding's.

  • Looking for a best-practices guide for developing in TestStand

I am looking for a best-practices guide for developing in TestStand. LabVIEW has its style guides and books, but there is very little published about TestStand.
Also, and I mention this since NI checks these entries as well, how about adding TestStand to the NI Developer Zone?
Thanks in advance for any leads or documents you can provide!

Thanks! I was stuck on entering "TestStand best practices" into NI's search engine, and never thought of entering "TestStand style guide."
If anyone knows of additional pertinent content, I would appreciate hearing about it.

  • Looking for some best practice regarding Content Administrator access

Hi. I am looking for some best practice or rule of thumb from SAP or from different companies how they address Portal Content Administrator access in Production environment. Basically, our company is implementing portal to work with SAP BW.  We are on SP 9. Basically, I am trying to determine if we should have 1-2 Portal Content Administrator in Production with 24/7 access or we should limit them from NOT having this.  Can you share with me some ideas of what is right? and what is not?
Should we have access in Production? Or Should we have this access but limited? By the way, our users are allow to Publish BI reports/queries into Production.

    Hello Michael,
Refer to this guide about managing initial content in portal.

  • Business Package for SAP Best Practices for Enterprise Portal

    Hi,
We are implementing EP for ECC 5.0 and we have to web enable some FI transactions like FB50/fb60 etc. We want to use standard business package for this. The only business package that caters this requirement is "Business Package for SAP Best Practices for Enterprise Portal 60.1". When i checked the data source for this business package, the specification is for "SAP R/3 4.6B and above". Does this work for ECC 5.0 as well? In general does the R/3 specific business packages work for ECC versions? Please let me know. Thanks for the help.  I promise rewards.
    Regards
    Hari

    Hari,
When you download the BPO via Portal Content Portfolio,
each bpo has additional information on the release.
    For example for the one you are inquiring about - Business Package for SAP Best Practices for Enterprise Portal, the additional release information is provided on the following links;

  • Recommendations for the best i7 L3 8GB Laptop to buy?

Can someone tell me what the best Laptop to buy with the following specifications:
    i7 L3 8GB (or more)
I need something that will last for five years, and run Dragon.
    Thanks!

Thank you for your quick reply. The "Knowbrainer website" has the following laptop recommendation for the best performance of the Dragon Naturally Speaking program. I looked through the Best Buy options--there are quite a few that offer what is recommended below. So which of the Best Buy options (that meet the specs below) should I buy? The specs, according to "Knowbrainer" are:
    1. Core™ i7 Ivy Bridge with four cores and hyperthreading (eight threads). In other words, go with the highest Core™ i7 Ivy Bridge you can find as far as speed, number of cores, L3 cache, etc.
    2. Look for at least 8 GB of RAM and preferably 16 GB of RAM. The reason for this is that there are going to be a lot of changes to the size and number of 64-bit applications over the next few years. 8 GB might do you just fine right now, but if you're going to go for five years with this laptop, then you're better off going with 16 GB of RAM looking down the road.
it's the processor, the amount of L3 cache and the RAM that form the core.
The bottom line: take into consideration that the computer needs to run both Windows 8 and DNS 12, and looking down the road to possibly DNS 13. Also, keep in mind that it's a given that whatever you're going to purchase now is going to be out of date inside of nine months. You just can't win at the rate that technology is advancing. Also, sometime next year Intel is going to introduce a whole new set of processors for both desktops and laptops that will raise the bar on performance. It's the game we play with hardware and Dragon.
    Thanks!

  • Trouble: Crsytal reports for SAP Best practices

    Hello Friends,
I have downloaded crystal reports for SAP Best practices. There are bunch of Crystal reports whose data source is a infoset query.
    Below are the reports
Cost Analysis: Planned vs. Actual Cost Variance for Cost Centers     Table: CSKT, CSLT
    Query: CO_OM_CA_20_Q1
                                                                                             InfoSet: ZBPBI131_INFO_ODVR
Cost Analysis: Planned vs. Actual Order Costs                             Query:  CO_OM_OP_20_Q1

                                                                  InfoSet: ZBPBI131_INFO_CSKT
I have created the above Infosets using the document which comes with the installation. However I couldn't find any documents to create these queries. I also searched the SAP system if these were predefined but I still couldn't find.
Note: I am ECC 6 and Enhancement pack 3
Question: Where are these queries?? How do i create them?
Any inputs would be really appreciated?

Hightlight the G entry and invoke the context menu.Select Options and in the Table name field enter the following
    CO%
Close the options window and press F5. Navigate again to SAP Infosets and to the opened connection to your system. Under Q->G you should be able to see the CO* Infosets.

    BTW % is a wildcard (same as * in Windows/Unix )

Hi Shiv, this forum is to support Crystal Reports. I suggest you post your question to one of the SAP forums for how to use that tool to create the queries.

  • Look For Transport Best Practices

    Hi,
I am looking for transport best practices, so please answer the following questions on how your place of business handles :
    1. If an object is modified in development and you decide that you you do not wish to move the modifications forward - Do you;
        a. delete the transport and release the locks
        b. create a corrective transport and move the transport through production
        c. release the transport and never import it into the next system
        d. something different : (Please explain)
    2. If a transport is imported into QA and then you decide never to move it to production, do you:
        a. delete the transport and release the locks
        b. create a corrective transport and move the transport through production
        c. release the transport and never import it into the next system
        d. something different : (Please explain)
    Thanks Rob
    [email protected]

I was always taught never to delete a transport. The changes should be reversed in the same transport and moved forward or released and the corrective transport moved forward in the same import queue.
If the transport goes to QAS then it needs to move to production. A corrective transport should be imported into production in the same queue.
I am sure you can get 20 different answers on this, but this is my policy.

  • Can anyone recommend tips and best practices for FrameMaker-to-RoboHelp migration ?

Hi. I'm planning a migration from FM (unstructured) to RH. I'd appreciate any tips and best practices for the migration process. (Note that at the moment I plan to import the FM documents into, not link to them from, RH.)
For example, my current FM files are presently not optimally "chunked", so that autoconverting FM file sections (based on, say, Header 1 paragraph layout) won't always result in an optimal topic set. I'm thinking of going through the FM docs and inserting dummy paragraphs with a tag somethike like "topic_break", placed in more appropriate locations that the existing headers. Then, during import to RH, I'd use the topic_break paragraph to demark the topics. Is this a good technique? Beyond paragraph-based import delineation, do you know of any guidelines for redrafting FM chapter file content into RH topics?
Also, are there any considerations/gotchas in the areas of text review workflow, multiple authoring, etc. after the migration? (I've not managed an ongoing RH doc project before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Kurt
BTW, the main reason for the migration: Info is presently scattered in various (and way to many) PDF files. There's no global index. I'd like to make a RoboHelp HTML interface (probably WebHelp layout) so it can be a one-stop documentation shop for users.

    Jeff
Fm may produce better output for your requirements but for many what Rh produces works just fine. My recent finding re Word converting images to JPG before import will mean a better experience for many.
Once Rh is set up, and it's not difficult, for many its printed documents will do the job. I would say try it and then judge.

  • Placing Images (Screen Caps) for Callouts - Best Practice?

    Illustrator CS6, Windows 7
I'm placing screen captures (screen images from software) in my artwork files to add callouts and create illustrations for a user manual.
The machine I'm capturing on has a screen resolution set at 1920 x 1080 (required for software). I'm using Snagit and capturing the screens, saving files, then placing in Illustrator. I've been using images minimum 300 dpi and never upsizing in Illustrator. Still I think my results could be better.
In the past I've used .jpg as my export filetype for placing into Illustrator. But, recent reads of postings in this community lead me to believe my practice might be flawed.
Question: What is considered best practice for placing images from screen capture (or any source) in Illustrator? What file type from capture will get me the clearest and most adaptable results?
My Illustrator file color mode is CMYK and my other art and callouts supporting the screen cap are working great.
I'm creating the artwork for import to Framemaker and creating a PDF for online and print.

What I mean is; what is the user looking at, and what are you training on?
For example, if the application involves medical imaging, and part of your documentation covers something like evaluating medical images in the application, that would probably be a far more color-critical scenario than an application in which the user just views and manipulates data.
Generally, you don't need anything like 300 PPI for screen captures in software documentation. The whole intent is for the image to look like the screen you are documenting, which is something like 72 or 96 PPI at actual size. You might downscale a screen capture as much as 50%, but at that size, the reader is viewing the application's text (including menus,  etc.) at half the size as viewed in the application, which is assumed to be sized for comfortable reading. Sharpness is good. You don't want the images to become blurred in pursuit of completely needless "resolution."
Also generally speaking, software screenshots are not usually color-critical. Placing (even pasting from SnagIt) directly into the page layout app is usually just fine. PostScript knows how to separate RGB images. Such things have been done since long before anyone sweated blood over "color management." Assuming your application interface is not using garish color (which would be poor interface design; it's tiring), I dare say the conversion of RGB screenshots to CMYK at the imagesetter or press would be fine.
How is the manual going to be printed? Unless you're talking about a large press runs, nowadays software documentation (subject to frequent updates) is often printed on on-demand presses (think glorified digital color copiers), not sheetfed presses. With software documentation, you're not usually talking coffee-table collector's books. (The exception would be something like a book on color-correction in Photoshop; thus my first question.)
I routinely paste screenshots from SnagIt directly into InDesign pages to document software applications, and add the callouts in InDesign. Only when I need some special graphics (swooping arrows, etc.) do I assemble the callouts to the screenshots in Illustrator; and even when I do that, I also typically paste the SnagIt captures directly in to AI.
Keeping your callouts native to the page layout program also better facilitates language translation, when you have to outsource that.

  • Recommendations for SCJP 6 practice exams

I everyone, I am new to this forum but I have gotten a lot of help from this forum so far. This is my first post. And please excuse me and direct me in the right direction if someone else has already asked and gotten an answer for this questions.
I am taking the SCJP 6 this AUG 4. I wanted to know what practice exam service shall I use (other than the two exams provided by SUN) if I want to get a taste of the real exam. I know there are many sites that provide practice exam packages, but I am afraid they might not be similar to how the actual SCJP 6 exam might look like. Please tell me your recommendations on what sites best depict the real exam scenarios.

Thank you for your reply, I will check out your recommendations, it certainly helps. But I would also like a recommendation for a practice exam service that I could subscribe to, meaning a portal that will provide me with many practice questions and I dont have to worry about whether they are similar to the questions in the real exam. I know there are services like Ucertify, pass4sure etc...if anyone has used these services could you please comment! Thank you all in advance
