Select List Defaults -- w/ Database Column

I've checked the forums, but I'm still stuck on this.
So I have a form that keeps track of meetings and contains a select list item of persons who could have organized the meeting. This select list is linked to a database column. I would like this to default to the logged-in-user when a new meeting is created.
Unfortunately, whatever I try (defaults, computations, etc.), I cannot seem to be able to change the selected name. If source is set to database column and always use source, will it override and prior attempts to change the value of the select list?

Wahhhh.....okay, it took me two days to come up with a solution to this. Marc, that was exactly the way I thought it should be. I had as the default attribute a PL/SQL function body that looked like:
select person_id into :P27_LEAD_ID from person where username = :APP_USER;
But that never worked. I still have no idea why. Anyway, I ended up using in SQL query to fill a hidden box and then referenced the box in the default using:
&P27_LEAD_DEFAULT.
Even leaving it as a PL/SQL expression and referencing it as :P27_LEAD_DEFAULT didn't work. =/
Thanks for your help,
Jonathan

  • How-To populate SELECT LIST default value from SQL Query

    OK, I've done my homework, and did not find my answer in the Forum, so here it is.
    I have a Page that displays fields from a SQL Query. The Page also has below that radiogroups, checkboxes, and Select Lists to allow the user to change values in the fields that are displayed at the top of the Region. I am able to pre-populate the radiogroups and checkboxes by performing a SELECT in the 'Source value or expression' of the Source area of the Page Item.
    However, I am unable to do the same for the Select List fields. Their default value ends up being the first value in the LOV ('-- None --' for NULL values). Source Used: Only when current value in session state is null. Source Type: SQL Query. Also, when I first go into the Page when running it, and check the Session State values, they are all null, so I don't understand why the field is not populated by the SQL Query statement as the radiogroups and checkboxes are.
    Any suggestions??? I've tried all sorts of combinations.

    Thank you for the suggestion.
    I had considered that, but cannot do so, because we are using Oracle Application Express more for development than for data containment.
    We have all our data in an Oracle 10.g DB which is separate from the OAEX server, and the OAEX app will reference that data via VIEWs and DB LINKs. We are doing so primarily as an added data security layer, where the data is housed separate from the app, in case the Web site is ever compromised. The data that can be viewed is restricted to a subset of the actual data that is available.
    Since the data is on a separate server, (I assume) we will not be able to set the source type to Database column, because (I asume) that is dependent upon the data being housed by the OAEX server.
    That still leaves me with having to populate the field with a SELECT statement from the Oracle DB. This unfortuneately is almost a show-stopper for me because of down-stream processing data requirements. Have not been able to come up with contingencies yet.

  • Select list defaulting to first value

    APEX Version: 4.1.1.00.23
    Oracle Database: 11g
    Issue: The application is updating the selected value from the Select list (Y/N) to the database but in front end, the select list is defaulted to display only the first value in the list. What I find is the datatype of the field in the table that this select list is tied to is CHAR(2). And upon changing it to VARCHAR2(2), it worked fine. Now whichever option I choose from the select list is updated and displayed at front as well.
    I do not understand why is this messing up with CHAR(2). Anyone please explain, I would really appreciate that.
    Thanks,
    Samip

    never use CHAR() in your tables.
    CHAR will always pad your strings to the exact same length.
    In your case, you are comparing the table value of 'Y ' to the List value of 'Y'.
    declare
      a  char(2) := 'Y';
      b varchar2(2) := 'Y';
    begin
      dbms_output.put_line('variable A has length of ' || length( a ) ); -- this will ALWAYS have a length of 2
      dbms_output.put_line('variable A has length of ' || length( b ) );
    end;

  • Dynamic values of a select list based on a column

    Is there an easy way to build the values of a select list from a column that contains 'Red,Green,Blue" where Red, Green, Blue will be the values of the select list?

    Bob,
    Next time you could try this for a one row table:
    WITH DATA AS
         (SELECT     SUBSTR (txt
                            , INSTR (txt, ',', 1, LEVEL) + 1
                            ,   INSTR (txt, ',', 1, LEVEL + 1)
                              - INSTR (txt, ',', 1, LEVEL)
                              - 1
                            ) AS token
          FROM       (SELECT ',' || YOUR_COLUMN || ',' txt FROM YOUR_TABLE)
          CONNECT BY LEVEL <=
                          LENGTH (txt)
                        - LENGTH (REPLACE (txt, ',', ''))
                        + 1)
    SELECT *
    FROM   DATAOr use this if your comma separated values are in more than one row:

  • Select List Default Value

    I have wondered about this for a while but haven't found an answer, maybe because I haven't searched for the right thing.
    With a select list, is there a straightforward way to specify the first item on the list for the default value?
    What is the best way to handle a case where the query providing the list of values may take a while to complete? I don't want to double the setup time by repeating the query just for the sake of finding the first item.

    Yes, it is. I am never using default values but computations. Default value will be set only after page submittion and not on load. A computation will set the item session state on load. Usually, you use some kind of condition for the computations to set the value of the item to something only if the item value is NULL. One of the reasons is also that the computations are visible in the page property and default values are hidden within the item properties.

  • Multipe select list -  default database value

    How can i achieve preselected Values in a multiple-select item based on values in the database ?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    In that case you will have to change the 'Default Value Type' to PL/SQL Expression, and dynamically retrieve the values from the DB at runtime, probably from a Table.
    Are you sure this is the cleanest way to achieve what you're trying to do?

  • Possible bug ? - Default value for select list

    4.2.1
    Hi, I have one page with a couple of reports. I have a time period filter on top. Its a select list with values 7 days, 3 months and 12 months. Default value is set to 3 (where return values of select list is 1,2,3 resp).
    Now in page 1 which has this select list, :P1_SELECT it has a report which shows counts of number of items purchased. When the user clicks on the count(hyperlinked column), it takes the user to another page which runs the details of the items and also uses the Page 1 select. It works fine when I change the time period. However, if I dont change the time period in the select list when I first login, althought I have set the default value to 3, the interactive report on page shows no data found, because the select list default value I guess it does not recognize.
    Is this a bug?
    Thanks,
    Sunil

  • Select lists - remember values after submit not working in IE7

    I have two dynamic select lists that are populated using .csv
    files.
    On submit, a set of results is returned based on the two
    options that were chosen.
    In IE7 when the results are returned the select lists default
    back to the last option in the select list. I would like it to
    default to what ever option was just chosen.
    I'm using the code below and it works as I would like it to

    The variable "actualLitType" is pulled from the URL and

    Any ideas why it doesn't work like I would like it to in IE7?

  • Select list within a report

    Hi All
    I need help creating a report with the first column as a select list and the other columns (4 of them) will auto populate based on the selected item. This is a report region on form that will update a table when submitted.
    My Table: Cost Center
    Cost Center Id - PK
    Cost Center
    Variable
    Object Code
    Department Accumaltor
    Year
    The user would select a cost center from a dropdown within the report and the other values would be filled in.
    So far I have created the select list and created a tabular form.
    I'm sure if I need to even use this type of report because the user will be able to add a new record if necessary.
    I think I need a process to retrieve the rest of the info from the table once the user made a selection. But where would I put that?
    I've read many posts that are similiar but I need some guidance.
    Thank You

    Hi I wanted to include the code I'm trying to use based on various posts I found:

  • Ajax select list with an updateable report

    Hi,
    I have an updateable report where the first 3 columns are all select lists and where the values in each of the select lists are dependent on the value selected in the previous select list.
    I've been able to implement this for the first 2 columns using ajax ie. the values in the select list for the second column are based on what value has been selected in the first column, but I have not been able to apply the same logic to the list of values for the 3rd column, which should be based on what has been selected in the second column.
    Also, when the value of the first column is changed, it should be blanking out the values of the 3rd column, until the new second column value has been selected, based on the change to the value of the first column.
    Any assistance/advice would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks,

  • How to display a value from Select List by default

    I have a Select List on a form and I need to on page load show an entry from the SL depending on the user Id of the user logged on.  For example, if the SL had 3 entries: 'Div1', 'Div2', and 'Div3', depending on the division the user belongs to (I can determine that from his user Id using a SQL), say, I need to display 'Div2' to the user in the SL instead of the usual NULL or '---- Select Div ----'.  'Div1' and 'Div 3' entries will still be part of the SL, but for user's convenience I need to display their division.

  • How to default a value in a select list

    Hi
    I have an item on the page which is displayed as a select list.
    The select list has an lov that returns 3 values as follows:
    ACAD1M
    ACAD2H
    ACAD3T
    the sql for this lov is as follows:
    select CAL_TYPE d,cal_type r
    from igs_ca_type
    where s_cal_cat='ACADEMIC'
    It needs to return the values in the order as shown above, however if the user does not select anything from the select list, I want it to default to the value in the middle of the list(ACAD2H)
    I tried using default on the item but I could not get this to work.
    Could someone explain how I can get the select list in HTMLDB to default to the value that I want regardless of which position it appears in the select list it always seems to default to the value at the top of the list.

    Hello Kay,
    A default value for a select list must be set to a legitimate returned value from the select list LOV query.
    The default value should be set in the item "Default" section. In the "Default Value" field you should enter your query – in a form of a PL/SQL Function Body – and set the "Default Value Type" field accordingly.
    The following is an example of code I'm using to set the default value of a select list to be the first displayed option (set by the user, and recorded in the dispord column):
    declare
      l_sno  number;
    begin
      select sno
      into l_sno
      from mis_mess_users
      where dispord = (select min(dispord)
                     from mis_mess_users);
      return l_sno;
    end;Using the same principle, you can use any query that will give you the result you need.
    Regards,
    Arie.

  • How to make a select list to return value to numeric column?

    I do have a select list with static values (STATIC:01;0,02;1,03;2,04;3,05;4,06;5,07;6,08;7,09;8,10;9). The problem is that I am returning a value to a numeric column. Therefore I have set 'Post Calculation Computation' as "to_number(:P73_MRGRATING, 9);" however I am getting ORA-01722: invalid number. How, (or when and where) to properly convert a character from a select list representing a numeric value into column of NUMBER data type?
    Thank you for your time.
    DanieD

    Sergio,
    It is because I am not able convert a value in a page item (:P73_ID) to number. On a page before, I have assigned a value to an application item (APPL_ID). On page 73, I want to assign the value in APPL_ID to the page item P73_ID . The value assigned to APP_ID is numeric. On a page 73 I also have a computation in Page processing section. It is an 'After Submit' processing of a static assignment of application item APPL_ID to page item P73_ID. Unfortunately it does not work. (ORA-01722: invalid number). I have tested this also with a 'Post Calculation Computation' on page item P73_ID (to_number(:P73_ID, 9999999999);) and I am still getting ORA... error. Only way I can make it work is to create a page item P73_ID as a text field, then when I run page 73 and enter a value into P73_ID manually - then it works and I can save the values from the form into database...
    The strange thing is that I am using application item APPL_ID on a couple of pages, in where clauses and it always works, even when I am comparing APPL_ID against a numeric value like select * from a_table where some_number = :APPL_ID, this works. But when I would like to create an entry form and assign application item APPL_ID to the page item P73_ID that is referencing a numeric table column – then I am getting ORA-01722…
    Is there any application (sample application) that is doing this and it works so I can check it and learn how to create this process appropriately?
    Thank you for your time.
