Selection of jsp/servlet container

We have developed a web based application in JSP with simple Beans. currently we are using Tomcat 3.2 as server but it is creating problems. We want to use another server which will fulfill our requirement. Which one will be best Application server with best servies and minimum cost.

newest tomcat is 4.1.18 (asaik).
tomcat is the reference implementation of servlets.

I don't think thats possible with the standard j2ee server.
There are probably ways around it, but it would involve a large component of custom coding.

Using JSP/Servlet to write Word Document to BLOB

Hi
I need some help pls
When I use a normal class with a main method, it loads the word document into a blob and I can read this 100%.Stunning.
With a JSP/Servlet I cannot get the document out again. The "format" seems to be lost.

also it is part of the online-documentation.
you need to install 9iAS enterprise edition. the server is pre-configured and will listen to the url http://yourserver/dev60cgi/rwcgi60.exe
passing only this url you will get a help-screen, describing the syntax.

How to implement this function in JSP/Servlet env?

Hi all,
I working on a project, it provides functionality to upload file using JSP/Servlet. In the first JSP page, there is file location and submit button. After user select a file to upload and click submit button, a message, like "sending file to XXXX", will be shown on the screen. Once uploading and validation are done on the server-side, a successful/error msg will be shown to user.
Here I have a question for the "sending..." msg and the successful/error msg. They should be put in one jsp page or in two separate page? how to implement them?

For the sending message... Well, the thing is, when you click submit, it's sending the file to the server and the server is processing it, and this is all done before the "complete" page is sent to the server. So one would need to use some Javascript on the page before the actual submit happens to show some message. This is done on Ebay when you put something for sale, you can upload an image, and there is a little popup message telling you that it's uploading, and it is removed when the process is done. Now, I'm not sure the exact details of how this works, but my educated guess is this:
1) The onsubmit function of the form checks that the file upload fields have a value (no need to popup a message if no file upload, since that's what usually takes the time, although it could just be assumed there is a file). If a file is to be uploaded, or just want to show the message anyway, a new popup window is opened with the window.open method and the "sending" message is shown (either written via Javascript or just load a small web page to the window).
2) The popup window, since you can't transfer the window object from the form page to the next page, has to check window.opener for some value that the success/error page would have to set. The success/error page could use it's body onload function to set a variable in it's own window object to denote that the page is loaded. The popup window can use a looping check using setTimeout or setInterval in Javascript to check for window.opener.isLoadedVariable to be present, and if so, close itself.
I've never done that, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Upload video by using jsp/servlet

You need to use the Oracle jdbc driver. Apparently, the Weblogic JDBC driver is being selected:
weblogic.jdbc.rmi.SerialPreparedStatement
The Oracle JDBC classes can be found in <ORACLE_HOME>/jdbc/lib/See <ORACLE_HOME>/jdbc/readme.txt for how to specify the correct class path in the application.
I would have thought that the oracle JDBC driver would have been selected (if in the classpath) or an exception would be raised if the Oracle JDBC driver was not found.... because the code should include:
DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
This should load the Oracle jdbc driver and classes, not the weblogic ones. IF the Oracle JDBC drivers are not found, an exception should be raised...

Using JDO in a Servlet container/app server

I was just wondering what Solarmetric recommends when using Kodo in a
servlet container/app server. Specifically the following:
1. Should each user session maintain a PersistenceManager or should the
PM be created per request? I am thinking it might be expensive to
maintain PMs across requests since you may have idle sessions and the
PMs may hold database resources? But since PMs aren't pooled in Kodo is
creating/closing a PM per request expensive or is it offset by Kodo's
connection pooling?
2. Is it advisable to store data to be displayed on a JSP by storing the
JDO instances themselves or serializable proxies (simple data beans) of
these objects in a user's session?
3. If you can store the JDO instances in the session, do you need to
make them transient instances using makeTransient() and call close() the
PersistenceManager?

These are all very good questions. There really is no one right answer to any
of them, so I'll just try to educate you on the issues involved and you can
make your own decision. Hopefully other people who are actually using Kodo
in a servlet/JSP environment will chime in too.

connection pooling?As long as you are outside of a datastore transaction, a PM does not maintain
any database resources. The only significant state it maintains is a soft
cache of persistent objects that have already been instantiated. If you are
using Kodo 2.3 RC1 and have no set the
com.solarmetric.kodo.DefaultFetchThreshold property to -1, then some
large collections you obtain from query results or relation traversals may be
scrollable result sets on the back-end, in which case they obviously maintain
some database resources.
2. Is it advisable to store data to be displayed on a JSP by storing the
JDO instances themselves or serializable proxies (simple data beans) of
these objects in a user's session?
3. If you can store the JDO instances in the session, do you need to
make them transient instances using makeTransient() and call close() the
PersistenceManager?I'll address these together. JDO fully supports serialization, and in fact
I think you'll find it does so in exactly the way that you want. If you choose
to store serialized persistent objects in the session, then during
serialization the objects will transparently pull in all of their persistent
state and relations, so the entire object graph is serialized. When you
deserialize, the objects will no longer be attached to their persistence
manager -- they will be transient.
Another options is to store the object IDs in the session, and re-retrieve
the persistent objects for each web request.
One design pattern that can probably net very good performance is to maintain
a global read-only persistence manager that you use to dereference these IDs.
Of course, if you ever want to change an object, you'll have to re-fetch it
in a new persistence manager, and evict it from the global manager's cache.

I am currently studying the life cycle of a JSP page from the Java EE 5 Tutorial (http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/bnahe.html). This document says that: "+If an instance of the JSP pages servlet does not exist, the container loads the JSP pages servlet class, instantiates an instance of the servlet class, initializes the servlet instance by calling the jspInit method+".
My two questions are:
i) Does this JSP servlet implement the HttpJspPage interface defined in javax.servlet.jsp?
ii) Does Struts and Spring MVC provide such JSP servlet Java classes implementations or are these part of other packages? If not, which packages offer such implementations?

Please state your problem that you are having more clearly so we can help.
I looked at your code I here are a few things you might consider:
It looks like you are putting freely typed-in comments from end-users into an xml document.
The problem with this is that the user may enter characters in his text that have special meaning
to xml and will have to be escaped correctly. Some of these characters are less than character, greater than character and ampersand character.
You may also have a similiar problem displaying them on your JSP page since there may be special characters that JSP has.
You will have to read up on how to deal with these special characters (I dont remember what the rules are). I seem to recall
if you use CDATA in your xml, you dont have to deal with those characters (I may be wrong).
When you finish writing your code, test it by entering all keyboard characters to make sure they are processed, stored in the database,
and re-displayed correctly.
Also, it looks like you are putting business logic in your JSP page (creating an xml file).
The JSP page is for displaying data ONLY and submitting back to a servlet. Put all your business logic in the servlet. Putting business logic in JSP is considered bad coding and will cause you many hours of headache trying to debug it. Also note: java scriptlets in a JSP page are only run when the JSP page is compiled into a servlet by java. It does not run after its compiled and therefore you cant call java functions after the JSP page is displayed to the client.

How to get servlet container name on which servlet is running

I tried getServletInfo(),but I couldn't get the information. Please give me code to find the servlet container on which servlet is running.
Is there any system property which will retrieve servlet container information such as its name and version

getServerInfo() should work.
What about getServerInfo() doesn't work for you?
My standard solution is to this in a JSP page:

Do i have to use a third party servlet container line Servlet Exec for windows .

There are several implementations of each: Tomcat and Jetty for servlets/JSPs, WebLogic and JBOSS for EJBs.

JSP / Servlet / OAS 4.0.8.2

I try to create a session thru JSP, and try to get that session thru servlet. However,
the servlet can't get the session. How can I make the JSP and servlet communicate thru session under Oracle Application Server 4.0.8.2. ( Note : the JSP and sevlet is under the same application but in different cartridges )

Direct from the release notes for OJSP 1.0.0.6.1:

- New configuration parameter: session_sharing; default value = true;
Function: This flag relates to session data sharing between JSPs & servlets.
Previously, when a JSP put a value into the session object, servlets in
the same JVM could not see the value (directly). It is because the session
in Oracle JSP is a session wrapper object, and not the original session object
provided by the servlet container. The values stored in the Oracle
JSP session were not exposed to the underlying servlet session directly.
This flag allows easier use of the original session object. The session
object in Oracle JSP is now the actual servlet session object, if there is
no globals.jsa file present for the application. For those who are using
globals.jsa (a beta feature), the JSP session wrapper now by default will
share the session data with the underlying servlet session object.
This behavior could be changed by setting initArgs: session_sharing=false.

Change Drop Down from Other JSP/Servlet/Bean

I am wanting to have a select box populate from a database query based on the information pulled from another select box as the user chooses it (ie a user chooses a state and the city choices populate or something like that). I am using JSP, Servlets and Beans. Seems that I need to us JSF, but I was wondering if there is another way or better way.

While JSP has evolved over time from Html and Java code mixed together to standard tags responsible mostly for displaying the data, it's still an old "hack" that compiles jsp pages into servlets.
JSF at least alleviates some of those problems and works nicely with proper xhtml formatted views too (and there's facelets etc. etc. etc.).
Granted, if you're shown some jsp tags and jsf tags, you might not appreciate the difference in the technologies.
