Self signed & CA signed certificate

Hi Experts,
Please consider below scenario.
users -
>Outer Firewall----.Portal with static content ->Cisco load balancer ->Inner Firewall>Apache>Web dispatcher-->SRM Portal with dialog instances -
> SAP SRM -
>Backend.
Here user will directly hit Cisco load balancer ( public IP ) So we will be installing CA signed certificate from vendor like Verisgn , Entrust etc.
But at Apache server ( private IP ) , do we really require  CA signed certificate from vendor like Verisgn , Entrust etc.
I mean even if we install self signed certificate at Apache it will do encryption & decryption . Also user will  not directly access Apache. so they will not see warning  messages.
So as  self signed certificate will do encrytion & decrytion , do we really require  CA signed certificate from vendor like Verisgn , Entrust etc  at Apache?
Best Regards,
Tushar.

Quoting myself again , in [this thread|SSL Setup in a load balanced portal; I wrote: You probably don't need a signed cert on the portal (Apache in your case) server itself (depending on whether your LB validates the cert). You could just use the default self-signed cert, since users won't be connecting to it directly and so won't be troubled by warnings about untrusted certs: the traffic from the AS would still be encrypted, you would only lose out on the server authentication feature (which you don't need, since again users won't see it).

  • Replace Self-Signed FAST Search Certificate with Third Party Certificate

We are trying to replace the Self-Signed FAST Search Certificate with Third Party Certificate in our SP 2010 environment. And are facing issues while enabling the SSL communication between the FAST servers and the corporate servers.
Our FAST search servers are in a different farm than that of the Corporate Servers.
The details of the certificate we received is as follows:
    Issued to : FastSearchCert
    Issued By: Issuer Name
    Valid From: 4/21/2015 to 4/20/2017
We were able to successfully renew the certificate on the FAST Search Server by following the below steps:
    1.  Login to the Administrative and the Non-Administrative nodes
of the FAST server. Go to Windows Service and stop the FAST Search for SharePoint and the FAST Search for SharePoint Monitoring services in both the servers.
Follow the below steps in the Administrative Node followed by the Non-Administrative Node
    2.
Install the certificate in the following paths in the certificate store:
    “Certificates(Local Computer)\Personal”
    “Certificates(Local Computer)\Trusted Root Certification Authorities”
    3. Ensure that the user account configured for the “FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint” has access to the private key of the certificate.
    4. Go the Administrative node of the FAST farm and follow the below steps:
    Go to the certificate store.
Expand the Personal folder and then click the Certificates folder. Double-click the third party signed FAST certificate.
Open the Details tab and then click Thumbprint. Note down this thumbprint.
    5. Next, open
Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint with Administrator
    Privileges.
    6.
Navigate to the directory, “D:\FASTSearch\installer\scripts” and execute the below command to replace the current certificate with the newly created
    third party signed FAST certificate.
    .\ReplaceDefaultCertificate.ps1 -thumbprint "certificate thumbprint".
    7. The FAST certificate was renewed successfully.
Once the certificate has been renewed successfully in both the nodes, follow the below step:
    8. Start the FASTSearch for SharePoint and the FAST Search
for SharePoint Monitoring services in the administrator server.
Next, while enabling the SSL communication between the FAST servers and the other corporate servers, we follow the below steps:
    1.
Copy the new certificate from any of the FAST servers to all the web-front end and application servers in the corporate farm, in order to enable SSL communication between these servers and the FAST farm.
    2.   Also, copy the script
‘SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1’ from the location “%FASTSearchFolder%\installer\scripts” in the FAST servers
to the web-front end and application servers of the corporate farm.
    3.  Follow the below steps on each of the servers in the corporate farm:
Open ‘SharePoint 2010 Management Shell’ with administrator privileges and navigate to the directory in which
    SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1’ script is located.
And then, execute the below command:
.\SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1 -certThumbprint "certificate thumbprint" –ssaName “FASTCibtebtSSA” –username “DOMAIN\SP_Farm”
     Where,
    -certThumbprint
    - Thumbprint of the certificate
    -ssaName – FAST Content SSA
-username – The account configured to run the SharePoint
    Search Service
On execution of the above command, we receive an error message stating that the "Connection to the Content Distributor servername.corp.abc.org: 14391 could not be validated...instance of FAST search server backend is running"
Please help us resolve this issue. We have not been able to find the cause of the above error for a long time.
    Any help is much appreciated.

Your tip on exporting from eDir to locate a missing private key was very helpful. Here are my steps to renew an expired third party certificate when the private key, generated 30 months ago in my case, could not be located.
In iManager, browse the tree and locate the likely certificate object. The Attributes for the object show Subject Name = webmail.acme.com. Selected the certificate and exported to webmailcert.pfx.
Then, the openssl commands in TID 7004039, "How to convert a SSL PFX to a PEM file", were run against the .pfx file to create cert.pem, key.pem and server.key files.
TID 7015500, "How to determine if private key belongs to public key (certificate)", was followed to determine if the public key (downloaded from third party) and private key (just retrieved from iManager) match - they did - that is, the private key converted from webmailcert.pfx matches the downloaded certificate.
TID 7013103, "How to create a .pem File for SSL certificate Installations", was followed to manually create a server.pem file using openssl.
TID 7010584, "How to setup SSL Certificate for Apache", part labeled "Additional Information" was followed to modify /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/vhost-ssl.conf file. Server.pem file created above copied to /etc/apache2/ssl.crt/ and /etc/ssl/servercerts/ directories as specified in vhost-ssl.conf.
    Restarted apache2.
www.digicert.com has an SSL Certificate Checker that can be used to verify the installation is successful.

  • Export & Import Self-Signed Root CA Certificate?

I have created a self-signed Root CA certificate with which I sign all of my other certificates on a leopard Server. This Root CA is installed and trusted on all of our client machines.
I recently tested exporting and archiving the Root CA in every format available from Keychain Access and then tried to import these files into another Snow Leopard server and was unable to assign the imported Certificates as a "Default Certificate Authority".
Does anyone know how I can set this Root CA that I created on another server as the default CA on this new machine for signing all future certificates that I create?
Fore some reason when I go into Keychain Access and select: Keychain Access -> Certificate Assistant -> Set the Default Certificate Authority… I end up with no certificates to choose from and the "Add a Certificate Authority…" button will not allow me to select any of the exported certificate formats that I archived.
    Any thoughts?

Anyone have any information at all? This seems like a very basic need for maintaining certificates beyond the usable life of the equipment on which they were created.
I have found precious little information about this specific to Apple OS.

  • Ability to sign emails with certificates

    Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone had been able to setup their email on the iphone (I am using a mobile me account which syncs - I don't know the terminology) with digital signatures.
I have setup my macbook that, when I compose an email, I can sign it with a free certificate I got from Comodo.
I was wondering if there was a way of setting up the iphone so that I can also sign the messages I compose when I am about?
I had a look at the iphone configuration utility (briefly) but got scared that I might change some other setting and break my phone (everything else is working so nicely).
Is there any guides as to how set this up (am happy to look at the iphone utility if I could get all the current settings I have loaded onto it and then just change the required changes). I don't know if this is even allowed in the device...
    Any information would be helpful

    Hi Sean,
Thanks for replying but I am not sure that the application does quite what I am after...
I am not trying to add an image with my signature on it but rather add a cryptographic signature which allows the recipient to know that it came from me. My knowledge on this topic is a little sketchy but I think that, for it to work, a hash of the entire message would need to be calculated and then encrypted with a private key found in my signature certificate (which only I have). The recipient can then check that the message has not been altered using the public key (provided in the email and signed by a certificate authority) to confirm that the hashes match.
Please reply if I have misunderstood something with the application.
Also thank you for looking into this for me. Any help is appreciated.
    Cheers

If you had Firefox save your Yahoo password, first try deleting that here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Security > "Saved Passwords"
The "signed out" message seems to be related to how Yahoo authenticates you. Some users have reported that disabling automatic proxy detection solves the problem, and it also resolves an issue of getting logged out every few minutes, if you have ever experienced that.
    To make the change:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the "Network" mini-tab, click the "Settings" button, then choose "No Proxy" and OK your way back out.
If your work connection requires you to use a proxy server, try the "Use system settings" option instead.
    Does that help?

The sound input going to the mic is not going to pipe through the speakers like that.  It doesn't do it because it would cause a feedback loop on itself.  The mic input will take sound and output it to a program or to another pathway (like a VoIP or Facetime call, etc.) but it won't behave like a Karaoke machine if that's what you're thinking.

    Hi Experts,
I am not able to open ESR and ID. I am facing "JAR resources in JNLP file are not signed by same certificate" issue. I have gone through SDN forums and solved this issue by deleting the javaws cache and clicking on Restore Archives and Generate New Signature button in the Administrator -> "Java Web Start Administration".
But my issue is...I have to do this every time when I log into the system. I am using J2SE Development Kit 5.0 and J2SE Runtime Environment Kit 5.0.
Also it is taking around 5 minutes to open ESR.

Are all of the jars in extlib.jnlp signed by the same cert? I think that the extension mechanism lets you get around having all of the jars for an overall app have the same signer, but I think it's still required that all of the jars within a given jnlp file have to have the same signer. So for you, all the jars in index.jnlp have to be signed by "cert A" and all the jars in extlib.jnlp have to be signed by "cert B". If that's not the case, you may need to split it up into multiple extensions.

  • Web Start : JAR resources in JNLP file are not signed by same certificate

What does this error mean exactly?
All the jars in this JNLP file are signed by the same certificate it's just that some of them are also signed by another certificate.
    According to this closed/fixed bug : http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4928787
Web Start should not be rejecting jars due to multiple signers???
Is this a regression in 1.6? or was this never actually fixed?
I can make this work by not signing these 'presigned' jars and putting them into extension JNLP files but this is less than desirable.
Some reasons for not using the extension JNLP:
-- Avoid this bug (which is also marked closed but not fixed) --> http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6566071
-- I would like to sign all the jars I deliver with my own certificate.
-- I would also like to give my clients the ability so sign the jars themselves (their own certificate) after they certify the application for distribution throughout their organization.

    Thanks for responding.

  • Jars can't be signed with different certificates---even by Sun?

I am deploying an application which uses the following jar files:
    com.example.application.jar
    com.example.support.jar
    javax.activation.jar
    javax.mail.jar
The latter two are jars signed from Sun, yet JWS complains that the jars have been signed with different certificates. I'm forced to unpack the Sun jars and repackage them, signing them with my own certificate.
Isn't this a little restrictive? Shouldn't jars signed by Sun be exceptions to the "all jars signed by the same certificate" requirement?

Thanks! The JNLP 1.5 MR specification is a bit opaque about exactly how to do this, but the following site has an example that helped:

The example didn't mention whether I can request all permissions for the component extension, but I suppose I can. Nothing seems to indicate whether I can have component extensions reference other component extensions (JavaMail requires JAF, for example), but it seems to work.
By requesting full permissions for the component extensions, though, I now get two dialogs presented to the user, the first asking if my application should be trusted, and the second asking if Sun Microsystems should be trusted.
If I remove all-permissions from the JavaMail component extension, yet request it for the main application (thereby only presenting the user with one confirmation dialog), will I still be able to perform restricted functionality using JavaMail, such as connecting to remote servers?
Here's what I'm now using, in hopes that it benefits someone else. The main JNLP:

  • Why unable to sign PDF with certificate after applying Nitro PDF password protection? (despite it explicitly allowing signing with certificates)

I used Adobe Reader XI to sign PDFs with certificate, which worked perfectly. Except that the PDF could still be edited by other programs (for example, Nitro PDF) after the signing (but not the fill out fields and the signature). To apply password protection makes sense to avoid changes in the PDF being made after it has been signed. So I applied password protection via Nitro PDF that allows only enter fill-out fields and signing. But when I open it with Adobe Reader, the filling out works fine, but the signing part is not available to click on it (all of the buttons under "Sign" tab are grey). When I go on the Security properties with Adobe Reader, I can explicitly see that signing of this PDF is allowed and yet the option is not open to use for me anymore.
Any ideas on why it is the case and what I could do about that?
    Many thanks!
    O.

Actually yes, I just asked my colleague to assist me with this, he password-protected the PDF with Acrobat 8, explicitly allowing for signing and fill-out functions, it also appears in Adobe Reader under security properties as "allowed", but it is not open to use in the Reader for me anymore (grey buttons).

If it says your billing info is wrong that means that your credit card issuer is refusing to approve your account. You will have to solve the problem with your bank or credit card company.

  • Lightroom CC crashes on startup and "sign out, sign in" solution doesn't work, any other solutions?

I downloaded LR CC on myMacbookpro and iMac.
LR5 was installed on both of them previously.
After installing, LR CC works fine onM Pro, but keeps crashing on iMac.
I've tried the "sign out, sign in" solution, but never works for me.
Is there any other solution I can try?
Since the update, I've edited photos on my 13' M pro instead of 27' iMac and it is getting annoying...

Did you update to LR 6.0.1 / LR CC 2015.0.1 ?

    von Pete.Green (30. April 2015)
Today we released an update to Lightroom, Lightroom CC 2015.0.1 (Also, Lightroom 6.0.1) is now available.
This bug fix addresses issues related to launching Lightroom and accessing online help.
    To Update:
Choose "Help > Updates" within Lightroom, or click Update from the Creative Cloud desktop application.
(If you're an early downloader, you may need to restart the CC Desktop application for update to show)

My Mac OS Lion 10.7 FileVaulted HD does not boot, prohibitory sign, stop sign appears some minutes after boot starts. Disk Utility repair shows four error messages:
Unable to bootstrap transaction group 2517: inconsistent crosscheck
    No valid commit checkpoint found
The volume xxxxxxxxxxxxxx(here it shows physical volume number) was found corrupt and can not be repaired.
Problems were encountered during repair of the partition map
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
(the same with 2518, 2519 and 2520 transaction group)
I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck
    Terry
