Seperate Volumes between alsa and pulseaudio

I have pulseaudio running as my primary sound server, and all alsa apps (Sygic Drive in particular) running through the pulseaudio-alsa plugin which works great.
My problem is that when Drive starts up (Or outputs any audio), it changes the master volume in pulse to whatever volume drive is set to use.
Example of this is, set pulseaudio to 0%, make Drive output audio, the pulse volume shoots back up to whatever Drive's config is set to change the volume to.
I have tried changing
flat-volumes = no
in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf which gives me an individual volume for the app, yet the app can still mess with the master control in pulse.
I was wondering, Is there a way to setup a completely different sink that all alsa apps use that has its own set of alsa controls that Drive can mess with, without messing with the pulse master control.
I.e. set pulse master to 50%, Drive makes audio at say 70%, drive changes the dummy "master" to 70% which would equate to 70% of the 50% of master volume (35% total volume)
As I only have one alsa app that is causing me this nightmare, I am happy for all alsa apps to use the one set of dummy sinks.
In basic, I want my alsa volumes completely seperate (but not exceeding) from pulseaudio's. But pulseaudio is still master, so if 50% master volume is set in pulse, maximum is 50% of total volume.

Lost volumes between raidutil and diskutil

Suddently the Xserve (Xeon early 2008, 10.5.8) show the "?" at the boot.
I've set up an other OS X Server on an external drive.
None of the four volumes from the internal drives mount anymore.
I assume the server has restarted after a long power failure that outrun the UPS.
At first I thought the raid controller has failed BUT RAIDUtil shows every disks and volumes with the green OK dot.
DiskUtil or disk utilities don't show any of the raid5 volumes.
What happened to the volumes between RAIDUtil and Diskutil ?
Is there a "deep" command to make them back ?
PLease HELP !

Tuxera NTFS-3G vs MacDrive / Sharing volumes between Mac and PC

Hi all,
I have a number of external hard drives (and am thinking of getting an external RAID array) which I need to share between Windows and Mac OS X. This is not just for backups it is for storing video media and projects (Final cut Pro/Sony Vegas) and working on them. The two sensible solutions seem to be Tuxera NTFS-3G and MacDrive. I'me inclined to go fro NTFS as that is what most of my drives are currently but would like to know what people thing.

[Solved] Sound with ALSA and PulseAudio at the same time?

Hi, I am using arch linux to play Counter Strike on.
While it works fine and all, I just don't get any sound in CS because I am using Mangler, which only seems to work with my microphone if I use PulseAudio.
I hope this is a rather simple issue, basicly, I just want to enable sound in PulseAudio and ALSA at the same time, is this possible?

I have read that PulseAudio decreases sound quality, and therefore I would not like to use this as a systemwide driver, but rather only where it is needed.
Please correct me if I am wrong

Ok, sound quality isn't noticeably worse, so this will do. HOWEVER, while I am in Counter Strike my sound is delayed by ~1 second, and it is therefore useless, any thoughts on that matter?
Edit again .. Solved this time:
I set my ALSA plugin in winecfg to "Hardware Acceleration: Emulation" - that seemed to do the trick.

Problem with the voice volume between incoming and outgoing calls

I have a situation with volume calls.
1.- When the calls are originated in the PSTN to the IP Phones, the volume is ok in both sites.
2.- When the calls is originated in the IP Phones to the PSTN, the person in the PSTN listens very low.
I try to adjust the volume in the voice-port configuration, increasing the input and output db value, but not if I am doing it well or if I need adjust the configuration in other part.
The router 2801 have a CCME ver 4, this router is connected to PBX with a E1 and the PBX have the PSTN Digital trunks.

Try using a negative value in the output attenuation setting. My understanding is that negative values in the the output attenuation increases the volume out to the PSTN. Make small adjustments as you increase the chance for echo. Positive values decrease the volume.

Ok, I don't get it ;b What are the differences between ALSA and Pulseaudio and what is preferred by you and why? I need to setup a new Arch installation (hardrive died ) and need some advice.

I tried getting by on a vanilla Alsa install, without pulseaudio. I got frustrated by the fact that only one application can use the soundcard at a time. Often, I'll have music on, but will also want to be able to hear what's happening in the video on a website. For this kind of thing, maybe it's possible to get by on dmix, but I'm already familiar with pulseaudio from my Ubuntu days . Maybe one day I'll try dmix, but until then, pulseaudio is in the category of "necessary evil" for me.

The only way would be to scale out on the same server and add another instance. As the prior post mentioned, your security structure would end up being maintained in 2 locations. There is no way in 11g to do a standalone install of BI Publisher. You just check that and you get BI Server by requirement.

Can I use ALSA and OSS?

My system currently runs fine with ALSA. I've recently started using cedega (wine) to run some games. I've read that cedega performs better under OSS. Can I install OSS to my system to only use for cedega, or will the two sound systems conflict?

You DO notice that's the ONLY place in the beginner's guide where its used that way? Just to ensure the latest python is gotten. And that everything else there uses pacman -S?
To OP, alsa-oss is your best bet, don't change between alsa and oss constantly, most apps will need resetting....

Can you share music between computers and seperate ipods?

I would like to know if I could share my itunes with someone on a different computer and with a seperate ipod. Me and my sister (who's in college) would like to continue sharing music because we usually split the cost of cds.
My main question is: Is it possible to share one itunes account with multiple ipods that can be accessed from any computer?
What we would like to do is continue sharing music without having to wait until both of our ipods are in the same location and using the same computer. It would be nice if I could get into the same account as her and when she adds music I also receive the music and when I add music she gets it as well.
This may be an impossible request but I have been searching the forums for hours trying to figure it out. If someone could please respond, even if it's not possible, that would be VERY helpful.

What you want is not supported with iTunes. You can both use the same account on different computers but what one downloads or adds will not be available to the other. If you are separated by location then CDs or DVDs recorded as data files are the best option. Record the files to disk then mail the disk. As long as you are both authorized to the same iTunes account I don't know of any issue with that.

No sound with ALSA and/or Pulse from built-in Intel 5 Series Card

I posted a thread about a similar problem to this 4 years ago, but that solution is no longer working for me, and I'm just now returning to Arch after floating between a few different distros, so I'm not as knowledgeable about this as I might once have been.
Basically, my problem is that sound does not work on my laptop, neither through the internal speakers or headphone jack, and neither with plain ALSA nor Pulseaudio. This leads me to believe that there is some underlying problem that once solved, will allow plain ALSA and Pulse to work properly, but that's just speculation. I've put several hours of research into this so far with no luck. Everything in alsamixer is unmuted and looks right. I'm going to dump as much relevant info on my setup below in hopes that someone more knowledgeable than I can spot the issue:

actually, internal speakers works, it's just on mute (you can change it with alsamixer), but headphone/external speakers doesn't work. and there's no sound card detected in gnome control center -> audio section.

I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad. May MacBook is used by my wife and me at home. I take the Pad with me when I travel. On the MacBook I have and Apple ID registered. It is the same I use with the iPad. Do I need a differnt ID for my wife if we want to use Facetime? Or do I need to create a seperate user-profile for my wife on the MacBook?

I normally just give it a little test before i leave each time by signing in of both devices and trying ringing myself

In ABAP HR we also have lots of predefined function modules that can be used..eg:go to se37..put 'HR*' and press F4...
finally to update an HR infotype record we use the function module hr operation rather than direct updates...also there are standard audit trail reports that monitors various activities such as insert/modify/delete operations on an hr infotype record...

Mpd and pulseaudio

I am trying (so far unsuccessfully) to set up mpd with pulseaudio. I enabled mpd.service, mpd is started when I boot up. But as soon as I try playing something back with (g)mpc, I get the well known "problems opening audio device".
Before anyone asks, both mpd and pulseaudio are running under my own UID. The problem seems to be that mpd does not know how to talk to the session bus that is used by pulseaudio. This makes sense, as mpd is launched before the session bus (which is launched by startx). Therefore, mpd does not know the correct DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and can't connect. Is there anyway to fix this behaviour? I would like to have the possibility to launch a dbus session bus before I launch mpd via systemd in such a way that the value of DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is broadcasted to the other daemons.

this is not actually an error. It just says it bound to your ipv6 interface before it could be bound to ipv4 interface. Define your binding statically in mpd.conf with
bind_to_address "127.0.0.1"
daemon: cannot init supplementary groups of user "jacob": Operation not permitted
you are running mpd as user, altho you should be running it as root
if you want to run it as user, make sure to remove the user line from mpd.conf
problems opening audio device
I can only guess here. You are saying you have pulseaudio. Did you configure the pulseaudio output in mpd.conf?
if you do so, make sure to comment out the alsa output. If you want to use the alsa output with your pulseaudio server, make sure you have pulseaudio-alsa installed
