Sequence & Capture Presets Definitions

Where could I find a thorough explanation of FCP 5.1 sequence presets? DV vs. HDV, 1080p, 1080i? Any suggestions?

I asked a question...didn't really point out the helpful PDF manual.
And I have too many points as it is...

  • Sequence and Capture Presets

I've shot and captured 35 hours of footage originally shot in HD (output in standard def 16:9) using Final Cut 5.0. After loading it and spending hours organizing it, I found my Sequence Present is 3:2 - Also the Aspect Ratio is set to NTSC-CCIR 601/DV Anamorphic 16:9 is off. Compressor is DV/DVCPro NTSC. Pixel Ratio is also NTSC-CCRI 601/DV.
Capture Preset is NTSC (3:2) Anamorphic is unchecked. Compressor is DV-NTSC. input is DCR TRV 900. I captured from a Z1U.
Can anyone tell me- aside from being a dumb *** in the first place- how I can redeem my project> ? I need this to be for professional broadcast (standard def, 16:9) - I'm on deadline and want to avoid recapturing. If I DO need to recapture, can retain markings/ subclips?
    Thanks a bunch!

Well there's a couple of things to check.
What settings did you use on the Z1U? (HDV, 1080i, 30fps?)
Did you use the capture preset mentioned in your post to capture the material? (check in the browser or item properties)
If that's the case, you have an offline version of your material and you will have to recapture the whole thing (use the HDV capture preset) or online your final edit (basically only recapturing the material used in the final edit)
I'm not sure how the online process will work in this case as I only have experience with PAL. It could prove to be tricky but someone here in the discussions forum must know if and how it's possible.

  • Sequence and Capture presets for 16x9 minidv

    FCP 6.0.6
checking capture presets for sd mini dv shot in sd 16x9 (US).
what are proper sequence and capture settings?
in sequence setting - should frame size box remain ntsc dv (3:2) and then just check 16x9 anamorphic box?
in capture settings - frame size should it be ntsc dv (3:2) and then check 16x9 anamorphic box?
    thanks in advance

Go to the menu Final Cut Pro > Easy Set Up and from the drop down menu choose USE: DV-NTSC Anamorphic.
    Click Setup.
That will make all the correct settings at once.

  • Sequence, Export, and Capture presets

Could someone explain to me the relationship (if any) of the Sequence presets to the Export presets. It seems to me that the sequence presets have to do with what I see on the computer, and the export presets are what the output is to be. And how does the captured material relate.
    Thanks
    Michael

The sequence is the internal codec FCP will use when editing.
If the captured file is the same codec as the sequence, FCP will be able to play the material on the timeline without rendering simple cuts. It will also have more real time effects available.
The export codec simply translates the internal codec of the sequence to the deliverable format of the output. Issues of frame proportion, frame rate and compression come into play here. If the sequence, captured file and export codecs are all the same, you have a very slick editing path. A major exception to this is HDV. It is an ugly kluge.
The manual is very well written and is a wonderful place to start reading about this relationship.

  • Onlilne HDCAM edit - what sequence/capture settings?

    Good Afternoon,
We have completed the offline edit of a 3 minute video that was shot on HDCAM,then edited using low-res Photo JPEG.
Using Media Manager we are planning to create a duplicate sequence to use to capture and connect the clips to the HDCAM footage.
What sequence settings do we use and what capture preset do we use? The manual isn't very clear on this.
    Thanks!

That's the card...not the drives. What DRIVES do you have? What DRIVE ARRAY? The card will be fast enough...if the raid array attached to it is fast enough.
How fast is it? I don't know...you need to test that out. Use the AJA Kona System Test application found here:

  • Cannot change "capture presets"

I try to duplicate in "audio/video settings" preferences the "capture presets" and FCP will not let me. they are locked. I can change all the other presets like sequence.
is there a way to unlock that so I can duplicate it and make changes.
    i am using FCP 6.0.5
    thanks
    Love
    Denny

Duplicate the preset (make a copy) then it is editable.

  • What are the FINAL CUT STUDIO capture presets using a "Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card"

A S-VHS cable and a/v cables are connected to the breakout box.
    What are the presets:
    1) Sequence Preset?
    2) Capture Preset?
    3) Device Control Preset?
    thanks

    1) Sequence Preset?
    2) Capture Preset?
    3) Device Control Preset?
Is this realted to your other question? Don't post more than once, please. GEt it right the first time and then wait. Patiently.
    1. Your sequence rpeset will be determined by the production's output taarget, it has nothing to do with the Balckmagic capture unless you alreday know what that will be. And you do, in fact, because VHS only comes in one way. When you bring your fist captured clip into a sequence, FCP7 will aks if you want to confrom the sequence to the clip's settings. Say yes. Done.
    2. Your capture is going to be regular ol' DV. There's no reason to try to use any other advanced codec for VHS. But you probalby hsould have a time base corrector or frame sync in the loop to help correct and stabilize ancient tapes. Your preset if NTSV DV
    3. There is not control for a VHJS deck. So une unctrolled device.

  • Capture preset for a multishoot with 3 diferent cameras

    hello everyone
    i just shot a three camera shoot with a panasonic dvx100b, Canon Gl1 and a Sony HVR-A1U 1080i
the footage from the dvx100b looks bad not clean also , i shot it on a tripod from the back of a room , there was lighting on the stage but the footage is not crisp or clean, im not sure if its because of the lighting situation and white balance or
maybee its because i used a wrong capture setting?
what preset should i use to capture this footage, since each camera is different, i need to capture diferently and then what sequence settings- now that Final Cut 6 can handle mix format.
    thanks
    Danny

what preset should i use to capture this footage, since each camera is different
Capture at the same settings as what you recorded. The DVX100B and the Canon GL1 both only record in DV (NTSC or PAL) so choose the appropriate capture preset in FCP. One note, use "Firewire Basic" as the Device Control setting IF you capture from a Canon camcorder.
The HVR-A1U can record in either HDV or DV. Use the capture preset that matches that ... but if you recorded in HDV with the camera, you can choose to down-convert to DV in-camera during the capture process.

  • Wrong capture presets & how to correct them

Ok, I've been a real dufus:
I have shot my material 25fps progressive, 16:9, PAL, DVCam. For reasons I can't comprehend I used the "DV PAL 48 KHz" preset and "Capture Now" to capture my whole tape, which was was successfully imported as 8 seperate clips due to (ordered) timecode breaks (using a Sony DSR-11 deck via "Firewire PAL" preset). I have created a sequence using subclips from those master clips.
    PART 1 - WRONG PRESETS?
I know I have to recapture my clips using the anamorphic setting, but rummaging around the "advanced" section of "Audio/Visual Settings>Capture Presets>DV PAL 48 KHz>Compressor" I noticed that the settings were 'interlaced' and the aspect ratio was set to 4:3. Should I change these to 'progressive' and 16:9 so I can capture/edit/output my film to same quality as I shot it?
PART 2 - CORRECTING THE PROBLEM
When I try to Batch Capture my original 8 master clips (with the new settings), it fails with the familiar "timecode error: end of tape reached" even though in 'Capture Now' FCP is meant to overcome my ordered timecode breaks with enough pre/post roll to allow me to recapture my clips. How do I get round this? I have seen a suggestion that I recapture the whole tape using the same clip names and then use "Reconnect Media" to associate my master clips to the new media files (I tested this idea with a duplicate master clip but got a warning of 'attribute mismatch' when I went to reconnect the duplicate to the newly capture media file apparently because as the media in/out timecodes weren't quite the same).

    - The 'Advanced' tab is actually in the 'Quicktime Settings' section not 'Compressor'. Do I take it that the 16:9 box in the 'Frame Size' area is for converting 4:3 on the tape to 16:9 in FCP rather than capturing 16:9 as shot on the tape?

  • How to adjust sample rate in "capture preset"?

I'm having to recapture footage shot some years ago on my old Sony VX1000 using my Sony Z5U. I'm working on FCE 4.0 (OS 10.4), Easy Setup at DV-NTSC and capturing by "capture now." I'm getting a warning saying that my sample rate of capture does not match sample rate of source tape and advises me to ensure that my audio sample rate of the "capture preset" matches the sample rate of [my] source tape. Browser tells me that my sequence and my clips audio rate are both at 48 KHz, but my sequence audio format is 32 bit floating point, and my clips are at 16 bit integer. How do I access capture preset and synch capture rate?
    Thanks

    48KHz = 16bit
    32KHz = 12bit
Can't be both at the same time.
Most cameras come set to 12bit as the factory default. On the Canon miniDV cams like your ZR500, go into the menus for *Camera Setup > Audio Setup > Audio Mode* and you should be able to toggle between 16 bit and 12 bit audio.
You want to film your videos using 16bit audio if at all possible. If you have done so, then you should use the DV-NTSC easy setup in Final Cut Express (not the DV-NTSC 32KHz easy setup).
If you inadvertently filmed your video using 12-bit audio then you will need to use the DV-NTSC 32KHz easy setup in FCE.

  • Matching sample rates of capture preset and tape

After upgrading to FCE 3.5, I don't have the dropped frames problem anymore and the audio is in sync but every time I'm done capturing a clip from my camera I get an alert saying the audio sample rate of captured media files don't match the sample rate on source tape.
So, I gather that the sample rate capture preset must equal the sample rate of the tape. So I need to know two things:
    1. How do I set the sample rate capture preset? I've looked everywhere I can think of.
    2. How do I find out what the sample rate of my tape is? I've looked in my Sony FX1's settings and can't find anything.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Your FX1 sound settings can be found in audio menu, select 16 bit if you shoot in DV format.
Audio settings for HDV is not adjustable.
Your sequence and capture settings have to match the properties of your captured clips.
Select DV-NTSC 48kHz in easy setup. (for DV)
or Apple intermediate codec 1080i60 for HDV.

  • Capture preset for dcvprohd1080 24p??????

I just shot a bunch of footage with an hvx200. The recording format was 1080i/24p. I am used to filming 720p with this camera and the presets in fcp are fine. There is not a capture preset for 1080/24p in fcp. There is only a 1080/24pa preset, which cant be right because its a totally differnt recording format. does anyone know the right way to capture dvcprohd 1080i/24p?

I found that most interesting.... but again I ask why do you need to go to all the hassle and it IS hassle of RE-encoding from MXF to QT? I'm editing the MXF files straight.
There is no "reencode", it is a simple transfer and addition of a QT wrapper so that FCP can read the files. Nothing is re-encoded, no metadata is lost, as Ben says. Hassle? What UTTER nonsense! if you rename the clip, FCP knows what links to what, and when you import you can RENAME and ORGANIZE your clips...a KEY thing to an efficient workflow.
Are you telling me you EDIT THE MASTERS? You don't back up your footage at all? So, if your hard drive fails (and they often do), then all your footage is gone. Even if you edit the MXF files directly with Raylight, you ought to back up the masters by copying them to another disk, or LTO, or whatever. Just common sense. I keep my original MXF files on an archive disk and import the files into FCP where I can rename and organize how I please.
In all my time of using the HVX (about 16 months) I've never known FCP to save the Metadata.... even if it hides it somewhere obscure its still a waste as FCP can't intiragate it.... i.e. I did a search this morning for all 720 50p footage shot in Tibet on P2 card serial number XXXXXX.... its an absolute breeze with P2cms. How can you do that with FCP? you can't you have to rummage through potentially 100's of clips.
What metadata are you referring to? All you need are the clip names and timecode information really, and FCP retains that. Even if you rename a clip from 0003FG5 to "man crosses street," FCP knows that MAN CROSSES STREET is tied to 0003FG5. If the drive fails or media is lost, and you reimport, it goes right to the clip.
I don't in anyway doubt your qualification in this field BUT I find it odd that your advocating such a convoluted workflow!
Convoluted? Are you STILL saying that you edit your MASTER CLIPS and don't back them up? And if you do back them up (as you should), doesn't THAT double the size of your footage?
First I program the metadata into the HVX via the SD card. I shoot what I need. I then hook up to my MBP to the HVX and fire up P2cms. I then injest the card(s). Lastly I fill in any outstanding required metadata.
When I come to edit the footage.... I have the powerful P2cms database on hand to find any footage that I need within my collection of 1000's of clips. That then gets dropped into the required sequence. No fuss no hassle!
Sorry to say it but after spending about a year with it all I can say is that Apple's workflow *****
Depends on what you are doing, what you are editing, and what workflow you need. Your workflow works for you, but doesn't necessarily work for everyone. Just like the Importing workflow doesn't work for everyone. A lot of people like and use Raylight and edit the masters right away. ENG crews, people who need fast turnaround. It works. But so does importing and renaming and all that. There isn't ONE way to do things, because there are many many different production types...each requiring a different approach.
Work the way you work...do what you do. Don't knock something because it isn't the way you do it. As the saying goes, "there is more than one way to skin a cat." As long as the cat ends up skinned, what does it matter how you did it?
    Eeew.

  • AVCHD capture preset

Well, I finally got my AVCHD camera and I'm now trying to log and transfer for the first time. My sequence preset is exactly what it should be (ProRes 422 1920x1080 60i 48kHz). The only choice that matches up when it comes to capture preset starts off with HDV. I'm not using HDV so I figure that's a no go. If there's nothing exact am I just supposed to go with "Generic Capture Template?" Up until now I've used clips from DVD's or gone through firewire with DV. Oh yeah, and I changed the device control preset to non-controllable device. Really the only thing that puzzled me was the capture preset. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Good lord. Apparently I'm SO used to DV I just realized I don't need a capture preset because I'm not going to be using anything to capture it (log and transfer).

  • Prores missing in Capture presets

    Hi,
yesterday I bought and installed OSX 10.6. Because my macbook got slow the past 2 years I chose to wipe my hard disk clean and put some zeros over it. After reinstalling FCP 7.0.3 I am missing the Prores codecs in my capture presets. And it seems I can't make them myself either (can't select the codec when making a new preset).
They are present in the sequence presets list however.
How do I get my favorite codec back?
    Q.

    Hi Q,
I believe pro res is available in log and transfer. Log and "capture" is for tape based media. Easy set up isn't needed for log and transfer.
