Serial UID in base class or interface is sufficient

Let's say i have 3 classes extending from a base class. Is it okay if the base class has serial UID defined as anyways those 3 other classes are extending from it. Or is it compulsory to define serial UID in every class?
Same applies for interface.

Defining static serial uid in baseclass doesn't means that it will be also a serial UID for derived class. You should explicitly define serialVersionUID in the derived class too.
serial UID is not needed as such since its value is generated at runtime for each class that implements serialzable. But it is highly recommended as value generated at runtime can be different on different compilers.

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a UUP EJB in WebLogic 9.2 workshop. I am using @FileGeneration to create my home & remote interfaces. And the generated remote interface is extending javax.ejb.EJBObject;I want my remote interface to extend com.bea.p13n.property.EntityPropertyManager which in turn implements javax.ejb.EJBObject. Can someone tell how i can do it in Workshop?.
    I came across Predefined Variable: remote.baseClass and as per docume
    ntation..."If specified, the value of this variable will be used as the base class for all generated remote classes. Where i should specify it?. @FileGeneration does nt have any option for it. Any help is grtly appreciated.

    When posting code, please use tags
    The object returned by File1.fun() is of type Base. You cannot cast an object to something it isn't - in this case, Base isn't Dervied. If you added some member variables to Derived, and the compiler allowed your cast from Base to Derived to succeed, where would these member variables come from?
    Also, you don't need the cast to myinterface in File1.fun()
    Also, normal Java coding conventions recommend naming classes and interfaces (in this case, myinterface) with leading capital letters, and camel-case caps throughout (e.g. MyInterface)

    I have extended EntityCache and can successfully specify it as a base class via the Project Properties dialog, but in Default Project Properties, I get an error stating: "The selected class is not a valid superclass. • Where to put methods in a abstract base class - subclasses system

    Hi,
    I’d like to ask a question on some basic design practice.
    When there are methods which are common in some subclasses so I would like to “move them up” in the base abstract class, I would also like to make sure that the ADT concept of the base class itself is not broken. So I don’t want to have methods in the base class that are not general enough to be there. How to resolve this?
    For example I create a base abstract class Vehicle. Then I create subclasses Plane and Tanker and realize that the startEnginge() method in them is the same and in order remove the duplicated code, I can put it in Vehicle. But later there may be Bicycle or Sled subclasses which don’t need startEngine().
    In a broader sense, I would like to keep the Vehicle class as similar to the real word concept of vehicles as possible. And not evey vehicle have engine of course.
    What is the solution?
    Extending the class hierarchy by injecting another abstract class between the base and the subclasses? (e.g: VehicleWithEngine)
    I suppose I can’t use Interfaces because I need to have the common implemenations as well.
    Thanks for any comments in advance,
    lemonboston
    ps: I am a beginner and don't know the terminology, so if there are programming expression for the followings for example, I would be thankful if someone could help with this too:
    - moving common methods up in the class hierarchy
    - injecting a class in the hierarchy
    - abstract base class - subclasses system

    You are talking about code.
    Instead you need to talk about the design.
    The base class represents conceptually a 'type' of something. That 'type' defines behavior. That behavior is what goes in the base class nothing else (in terms of design.)
    If you have common functionality which does not fit into the definition (design) of the 'type' then you put it in another class and use (composition) that class in the sub class.
No that is not how it works.
    You have specific examples of some vehicles and then you need to manage those types generically. That is the first step.
    Second step is then to determine what the exact 'type' is that you want to manage. And you use the requirements of the need to create the 'type'.
    Then you look at the specific examples to determine how they will meet the needs of the type.
    Thus if I have an application that must start the engines of all the vehicles in the city then I must have a vehicle class which has startEngine.
    But if I have an application that manages vehicles as inventory (like a retail store) and then decide that because my examples both have engines that I might as well move it into the base class. In that case there is no 'need' for the application to manage starting vehicles. The fact that both have engines is irrelevant.
    So looking back at your example you have stated functionality about your specific types but you have not stated anything about why your application needs to deal with that functionality generically.
    Another way to think about it is that you do not put the shared functionality in the base because you can but rather because you must.

  • Abstract Classes versus Interfaces

    Somebody at work has just made an interesting observation and its bugging me, comments please.
    When I started Java I just used classes (and abstract classes), and didnt bother with Interfaces I understood them to be a way of getting round the lack of MultipleInheritance and it wasnt a problem that concerned me.
    But as time went on I found that sometimes I did want classes that had little in common to provide some additional feature (such as logging), and interfaces were great for this.
    ..so I was happy ..
    During all this time if I want a HashSet I would write code like this
    HashSet dataSet = new HashSet();but then I read that HashSet was an implementation detail and we should be using Interfaces as follows:
    Set dataSet = new HashSet();So whereas before I might have had a class hierachy with an Abstract class at the top , I started slotting in Interfaces above that and viewing the Abstract class as just a convenience to implementing the Interface.
    So which is the right method , originally I saw subclassing object as an 'is a ' relationship and implementing an interface as a 'implements' relationship. But more recently it seems to be turned on its head and implementing an interface is an 'is a' relationship (but supports multiple inheritance)
    Also it seems to be the trouble with this second approach is that anyone can implement an interface, for example I could implement Set,Map and List with one class, the class hierachy is not so helpful .

    Thanks, but the question was alot wider than that,
    the HashSet example was just one part of it.I think it is representative of all the situations that you talk about, which are whether an instantiator should handle the instantiated object by its interface or by its implementation.
    I suppose the question is
    "How do you code model "is a " relationship in java
    through extending a class or creating an interface
    and implementing it"
    MySubClass extends MySuperClass implements MyInterface {}MySubClass is a MySuperClass and a MyInterface. The way that I view it, the "is a" relationship applies to all type inheritance, even for the multiple type inheritance that you can have with interfaces. The "is a" relationship doesn't doesn't have to be a 1:1 mapping. There's no point in thinking about it differently since that's how the language behaves.
    an alternative question is
    "is it correct to mix/match both methods I described
    above"I thought I gave an answer. You said that my answer is not "broad enough." How so? My answer was that handling an object that you instantiate by its interface can reduce the amount of changes you have to make if you change the implementation. You will have to make one change (the line of code that instantiates the object) instead of many. Also, handling it by its interface makes it easier to switch from object A instantiating object B to object A being passed a reference to B and to object A getting its dependencies injected by XML configuration.
    It seems weird to handle an object by its interface if you already know it's implementation, but it's commonly seen and this is why I think it must be used. As I said, it's a small benefit of abstraction.
    The times when you may not want to do this is when the instantiator has to call methods from different interfaces of the object. You can handle it by its interface by casting between the different interfaces you have to work with, or you can just handle it by its implementation, gaining access to all of the object's interfaces.
    Note that everything I explained concerns the type by which the instantiator handles an instantiated object. If a class does not instantiate a certain object, then it almost always should receive it by its interface, unless it's some really common implementation that's never going to change.
    I use interface, abstract class, and base class interchangeably. It's up to you to decide which to use for type inheritance. It's good practice to favor interfaces.

  • Base classes with Collection attributes

    I have a question. Suppose I have a base class A, an abstract base class
    to be exact, and subclasses B and C. Assume A has an attribute of
    Collection type, let's call it collectionImpl. Now I would like subclasses
    B and C to be able to have elements of different types along the lines of
    what I've outlined below.
    Strictly speaking, class A wouldn't have to be PC, since I primarily care
    of B and C but I wanted to show the structure.
    <class name="A" persistence-capable-superclass="A">
    <field name="collectionImpl">
    <collection element type="someType"/>
    </field>
    </class>
    <class name="B" persistence-capable-superclass="A">
    <field name="collectionImpl">
    <collection element type="someOtherType"/>
    </field>
    </class>
    So, how would one express this?
    Scott

    Understood. Now for bit more clarification. Given my earlier example, what
    if classes A, B and C implement the java.util.Collection interface. Does
    Kodo have in issue with that? I know Kodo has this ProxyCollection stuff
    but I don't really want to do that, nor do I think I really need to given
    what I'm trying to accomplish.
    The issue I'm having now is that the Kodo Enhancer is complaining that no
    element-type is declared when I have an attribute of class type B for
    example (implementing java.util.Collection) even though an element type is
    declared for the that actual Collection object held in the base class of B
    (A).
    <class name="A" requires-extent="false">
    <field name="impl">
    <collection element-type="SomeType"/>
    <extension vendor-name="kodo" key="ordered" value="true"/>
    </field>
    </class>
    <class name="B" persistence-capable-superclass="A"
    requires-extent="false"/>
    Class "A" extends java.util.AbstractSet, impl is an instance of
    java.util.Collection.
    All this was working quite well until I made some updates recently
    although the basic implementation is the same. Logically I don't know what
    I might have done to cause the new error message.
    I'm using v2.5.2 BTW.

  • Using the Hyperion (Essbase) Objects 6.5  Base Classes

    Hi all,I am using Hyperion (Essbase) Objects 6.5 to report from an Essbase 6.5.3 database. Using the sample report.asp page as a guide, I want to use the "EssProperties" class to change the Essbase options for missing values and using aliases, however there no effect on the results returned when setting these properties.Has anyone out there had any success?

    You need to set the EssProperties class you created into the EssOperations class:set oEssOperations.EssProperties = <your property class instance>Alternatively, you can modify, in place, the instance of EssProperties that EssOperations already has:with oEssOperations.EssProperties .MissingTextString = "Boo!" .UseAliases = trueend withThink of the Essbase Objects Base Classes sort of as a molecule.. The 'basic atom' of the molecule is the EssOperations class (which contains the normal retrieve/zoom/pivot type of operations). Attached to the 'basic atom' are the things that are needed for a successful operation.. First, a connection (the EssConnection object) is 'plugged into' the molecule. Next, properties (an EssProperties object) is plugged in.. Finally, you need a grid to display it on so you plug in a grid object (or, more technically, one of the components that implement the IEssGrid interface).Once you have all of the 'atoms' of the grid plugged in, you have everything you need to do a successful operation.Tim TowApplied OLAP, Inc

  • How to call a Derived call fucntion with a base class object ?

    Hi all
    i am working on a JNI interface to Java, and in the process of simulating a C++ behaviour in java
    so i need some help form you people, in this regard.
    here is a c++ code, i need a equivalent fucntionality in java , to put it one word, the question is
    how to implement the dynamic_cast functionality in java, as java also has virtual fucntions, i think
    this should be possible, if it is not, what is the alternative
    class Base
    public:
         Base()
         ~Base()
         virtual void F1()
              cout<<"The BASE::F1() is called"<<endl;
         virtual void F2()
              cout<<"The BASE::F2() is called"<<endl;
    class Derived : public Base
    public:
         Derived()
         ~Derived()
         virtual  void F3()
              cout<<"The Derived::F3() is called"<<endl;
         virtual void F4()
              cout<<"The Derived::F4() is called"<<endl;
    Base * GetDerived()
         return new Derived();
    int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[])
         Base *ptr = NULL;
                    ptr  = GetDerived();
         Derived *dPtr = dynamic_cast<Derived *>(ptr);
                    dPtr->F3();
    }regards
    pradish

    Just to clarify a point that I consider important--the distinction between references and objects:
    Your subject is: How to call a Derived call fucntion with a base class object ? The answer to that is: You cannot. It is completely impossible in Java. If you have a base class object, the derivced class' methods are not present. On the other hand, if you have a compile-time reference of the parent type, but at runtime it happens to point to an instance of the derived class, then, as pointed out, you can cast the reference. (Note that casting does not apply to objects.)

  • Virtual class vs. interface

    hi,
    i want to know the difference between virtual clas and interface ? I know that in Java we have virtual methods.but is there any virtual class kind of concept(like C++)?

    1) don't post beginner question in the Java Programming forum. There's a {forum:id=921} forum for that purpose.
    2) You should start by reading the Java tutorial; see for example this section: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/javaOO/index.html
    is there any virtual class kind of concept3) Yes there is, those are called abstract classes
    EDIT: should have closed my big gob, it looks like C++ virtual base classes are a specific construct meant for multiple inheritance. So no, Java hasn't this concept. But given the confusion of terms, as pointed out by ejp, I thought you meant classes which do allow "pure virtual methods", for which Java's closest equivalent are, definitely, astract classes .
    EDIT: well, Java also has interfaces , which only allow declaring abstract (pure virtual) methods, so my reply is getting all the more fuzzy...
    Going ejp's way now, can you rephrase the question, with a more accurate wording?

  • AS3: How to create one base class for classes loaded in multiple swfs?

    Our application have 3 different modules and all use
    fscommand and ExternalInterface alot. Now the problem is we are
    combining all those modules, but they all will reside in different
    swfs. Is there any way that they extend to same base class and its
    static members have only one instance accessible by all
    three?

    Hi,
    You can achieve this via Workshop 9.2 by using the exported Ant script for your project as follows:
    -Ensure that all Jars needed to resolve com.bea.p13n.property.EntityPropertyManager (this particular class is found in weblogic92/common/p13n/lib/p13n_ejb.jar) and all referenced classes are added to the Java build path for your WebLogic EJB project (Properties->Java Build Path->Libraries)
    -Export the "Workshop Ant Script" for your WebLogic EJB project (File->Export->Workshop Ant Script); this will generate a "build.xml" Ant script under your project root directory.
    -Edit this default build script as follows: in the call to the "ejbgen" task within the "build" target, add the attribute: propertyFile="ejbgen.properties"
    -Create a file "ejbgen.properties" under the root of your WebLogic EJB project and add the following entry:
    YourSessionBeanClassName.remote.baseClass=com.bea.p13n.property.EntityPropertyManager
    -Add a "<path refid="java.classpath"/>" within the "<classpath>" for the "java" task element that calls "weblogic.ejbc" (this will ensure that the p13n classes are resolved by EJBC)
    Follow the instructions for executing the Ant build script found here: http://edocs.bea.com/workshop/docs92/ws_platform/ideuserguide/conUseCustomAntBuild.html
    For more information on the EJBGen property file support, see: http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs92/ejb/EJBGen_reference.html

  • Warning :: Derived class hides the base class virtual function

    We are porting from CC5.3 to CC5.8 compiler with Sun Studio one compiler. After plenty of hurdles we are in the final stage of removing the warning messages... Amoung the plenty the following one is very common and in different files. Why am I getting this error in 5.8 and not in 5.3 compiler....
    Warning: derived_Object::markRead Hides the virtual function base_Object::markRead(ut_SourceCodeLocation&) const in a virtual base
    From this it is easily understandable that the base class mark read was hidden by derived class markRead... when we drive and override the derived class function.... It is all over the place....
    Thank you,
    Saravanan Kannan
    //public: using xx_Object :: markRead;
    virtual void markRead() const;

    The Sun C++ FAQ discusses the warning message:
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/cc/documentation/ss11/mr/READMEs/c++_faq.html#Coding1
    Notice that warnings are not necessarily errors. But I applaud your desire to fix the code so that it generates no warnings. I wish more of our customers could be persuaded to do the same. :-)
    C++ 5.3 issues this warning, by the way. Example:
    struct B { virtual int foo(int); };
    struct D : B { virtual int foo(double); }; // line 2
    D d;
    line 2: Warning: D::foo hides the virtual function B::foo(int).
    If for your particular code you do not see a warning with C++ 5.3, it would be due to a bug in C++ 5.3 that was later fixed.

    Well, putting all that Java code into a JSP was a bad idea in the first place, just on general design principles. But you've done it in such a way that the result of compiling the JSP is malformed Java code. Frankly I would just throw it away and put the Java code into a servlet or some other Java class, where it belongs.
    But if you're really working in a place where nobody has learned anything since 2003, and you're forced to support that old junk, then I would point out that the error occurs before the place which generates this line:
    import java.util.*;You only need to look at two of the thousand lines of code you posted.

  • Class override, how to create the child class and then the base class

    I started to write a program for a smart DMM, the problem is every version of the DMM the company change the communication commend.
    My idea is to write a child class for every DMM version and every SubVI of the child will override the base class SubVI.
    My problem is, i want first to create one child class and after i will see every thing is work,  start to create the base class. that way i will see if am thinking the right way.
    My question is
    How can i create a child class and then create the base class and configure the SubVi of the child class to be Override of the base class?
    I tried to search in the property of the class but i didn't see nothing.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    This can be done and I've done it on occasion.
    You simply create the base class with the dynamic dispatch methods you require (connector panes need to be identical to thos of the child class).
    Then set the inheritance of the class to inherit from this base class.  If your method is defined as a dynamic dispatch method in the parent, you'll most likely now have some errors (unless your child method was already DD in which case you might just be OK already).
    To change the inheritance of a class, right-click the properties of the class in your project and select properties.  I believe the ineritance tree is at the lower end of the properties.  Click on the "change inheritance" (or something similar) to choose the class from which you now wish to inherit.
