Serious Difficulty With Mail

Hi All,
I'm having seroius difficulty with Mail. Every time I start it up, it crashes within 30 seconds and I have to Force Quit every time. It has all the looks of a virus!!!!
How do I erradicate this or how do I go about reinstalling Mail. I've repaired permissions and disk (there were no errors on the disk). I've also downloaded McAfee Virex and it found nothing - I'm running out of ideas.
Can anyone help???
Thanks,
Seán.
PowerBook G4 1.5GHz, 512MB, 80GB, AE   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Don't waste your time being concerned about a virus causing this. If/when the first OS X virus is identified, it will be all over the newswires and the internet (including these Discussions) in a matter of hours if not minutes since it will be big news.
Which Virex version did you download and install? Did you confirm the version you installed is compatible with Tiger?
Re-installing the Mail.app rarely resolves such a problem.
Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Move the Mail folder to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new Mail folder and account named folders within will be created automatically. All account mailboxes will be empty and no user created "On My Mac" mailboxes will be available but this will determine if there is a problem in the old Mail folder moved to the Desktop.
If this resolves the crashing problem, you can replace the various files that stores Rules, Signatures and Junk Mail "learned" settings, etc. and then import various mailboxes from the old Mail folder a few at a time to determine which files and/or mailboxes are causing the problem.
If this doesn't resolve the crashing problem, with the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Delete the newly created Mail folder. Move the old Mail folder back to the same location at Home > Library.
Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folder(s) and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

  • Serious problem with mail beware

I was using Apple's mail program for 3 years for my website. I was told by a few customers that they had not gotten my emails.
mail was indicating that emails were sent, but they were arbitrarily not being delivered and I wasn't getting any failure notices.
Checked with Verizon, my FIOS internet provider...no problem.
Called Yahoo, where my website is hosted and no problem there. Tried calling Yahoo again and a tech mentioned that He had heard of problems with Mac mail related to a recent update.
So I downloaded Thunderbird, set it up and problem has vanished.
I don't know how much business I lost due Apple screwing things up.
I'll never use Apple's mail program again. If you are using it. watch out. You could be losing emails and not have a clue that it's happening

Describe how Apple has anything to do with your problem. You're ranting and randomly blaming them for a problem, without a shred of evidence. Mail send mail perfectly fine, whether or not it gets delivered is out of your control once that's done, and Apple isn't involved.
And what about this recent update to Mail that Yahoo! (and you) are blaming for this problem? If you had a clue, you'd know there has been no update to Mail for several years. As if that wasn't enough evidence of their not being a problem with Mail, how do you account for the millions of users who have no such problems? Luck? No, it's because there is no problem with Mail.
Before you start randomly blaming parties for things that haven't happened or aren't in control of the supposed issue, know what you're talking about. It's obvious you haven't a clue about this.

  • Serious problem with mail. Screenshots included

I'm not sure what happened here, but I erased one email account and then all of the sudden everything got messed up.
If you look at the screenshots, I think you can get a pretty good idea how its not adding up. Account names aren't even matching from one screen to the next.
What's the problem? Do I need to reinstall my OS?

I'm currently struggling with exactly the same problem. I solved it for a short while but it returned after a restart.
Make all the accounts inactive. In the one that you're having the problems with, insert a typo into the account name. Now create a new account and enter the correct details. You'll be able to send mail again. Now simply enable the other accounts (repair the typo) and delete the new one. You can still send mail. After a restart however, the error returns.

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

  • My Client is having a serious problem with the Contact Form Widget

My Client is having a serious problem with the Contact Form Widget that I can not figure out how to correct.
I created a website for a client and inserted a Contact Form widget on their 'Contact Us' page. Whenever anyone uses the form, the e-mail my client receive shows my e-mail address as the sender. So, when they 'reply' to the e-mail, the reply is sent to me and not the person who sent the original message. This creates a major problem in that I get barraged with e-mail replies while my client's potential customers go without a response.
When I look at  'Site Manager > System E-Mails > Workflow Information > E-mail From Address' on the site's Admin Console, it shows my e-mail information. Is this is what needs to be changed?  If it is, what needs to be placed in that field so that the e-mail my client receives shows the senders e-mail information in the 'From' field.  My client wants to be able to click reply and have the message sent to the right party. They would be very upset if they have to cut and past the senders e-mail address from the body text on every contact they receive.
Their feeling is that if I can't find a way to make the contact form work the way it should, then it's useless to them.
Can anyone help me figure this out? I really don't want to disappoint my first client.

Are you on a plan that has the CRM feature that stores your customers' data? If so, the idea of the contact form is that you'll receive a notification that there's been an inquiry filled out on your contact form and there should be a link in that email notification that leads to the "Case" that was created when that customer filled out a contact form.  You can click that link and visit the case for that customer in your BC site and reply to them from there so that all of the correspondence is logged in the CRM for safe-keeping and for your records.
If your client finds this is too much work to login to BC to reply every time, then you should check to see if you have the "Customer Service Ticketing" feature on your hosting plan.  This is a feature where you create a dedicated email account (like [email protected]) and the BC system will automatically login to that email account and pull any emails in that inbox and convert them to a customer case for the sender of the email and then it will send out a notification via email to any of the BC Admin users you delegate as "Customer Service Agents".  Since the CST integrates with the BC CRM it lets you reply directly within the email-- but when you reply it will be going to that same email address dedicated to the CST but once the CST service checks your email again and sees that you replied to this inquiry it will log your reply against the customer's case and sends your reply via email back to them so that all the correspondance gets logged on BC's CRM but you can still reply via email.
There's no way to use the default web forms to update the "From" or "Reply-To" address.. it must come from an approved email address to avoid spam issues.  On most web services you cannot change the "from" address anyway but usually you can at least specify the "Reply-To" address so that when someone hits "reply" in their email client it will reply to whoever you setup as the "Reply-To" address.
Here's some more information about CST: http://kb.worldsecuresystems.com/kb/customer-service-ticketing.html?bc-partner
I don't think the CST feature is in the webMarketing BC plan-- I think it's only in the webCommerce plan so if you have less than an webCommerce plan you have to tell your client to reply through BC by clicking the link in the notification they get.  You can justify it by saying its one or two more steps but it keeps the entire convo on record in their CRM for easy referral later.

As the event log indicated, this is due to acrobat pdfmaker office com addin doesn't work well with Microsoft Word.
I would suggest you go ahead and try to upgrade your Adobe product to the latest version and see if issue persists.
Or contact the support of Adobe and see if there is a known compatibility issue or not.

  • Multiple accounts with Mail

I am having serious trouble trying to set up several different accounts with Mail. I have arranged with my service provider to send all incoming mail from subsidiary addresses to one mailbox, but I want to be able to send from these different addresses. After setting up a first Mail account, for the address to which all incoming mail arrives, I tried to set up further accounts. These accounts all share incoming and outgoing mail servers with the primary account, but for some reason, Mail refuses to accept this, returning the error message “Trying to log in this POP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct”, even though they are indeed correct.  The other error message returned is “An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made”.
Further confusing the issue, if I try to edit the SMTP server list, any new server name I input is immediately branded “offline”, with no apparent option to bring it online. Finally, demands that I re-type passwords ignore the fact that I have just done so (correctly)...
The impression I am getting is that either Mail cannot be connected to more than one POP server, and/or that two accounts cannot share the same incoming and outgoing mail servers. Is either of these correct? What is particularly confusing is that Microsoft Outlook had none of these problems with multiple accounts, and happily allowed different accounts to share servers. Is this a built-in limitation of Mail, and should I be looking elsewhere for a solution?

Extensive search across this forum and elsewhere has sadly convinced me that Mac Mail is a badly designed, buggy and misconceived abortion. As a result, I have decided that life is too short to struggle with poor software, and have moved to using Postbox. The best $10 I ever spent in  my life...

  • Graphics Problems with Mail 4.1

I am having two serious issues with the way Mail handles graphics in an enterprise (MS Exchange) environment, making it necessary to return to Entourage or Outlook for daily mail duty:
    1. If I use an inline graphic in my message, (which I have to do a lot in my work), any message text that follows the graphic within the message is converted to a plain text file called "ATT00001..txt". Instead of reading the message as I composed it, recipients must notice that they have to click on the attachment to continue reading (in a different application!) Ugh.
    2. Replying to messages strips out the graphics, replacing them with angle-bracketed references, (e.g., "<image-name.jpg>") When participating in a long mail conversation with graphics inline, having the images stripped out like this essentially destroys the context for everyone.
These problems really work against Apple's credibility in an enterprise environment.
Does anyone know how to fix these problems? I looked online and in help, and cannot find any solutions.

Instead of reading the message as I composed it, recipients must notice that they have to click on the attachment to continue reading (in a different application!)
This is, according to the Apple engineers, due to how the Exchange server handles messages with attachments. Their answer is to make sure that any attachment comes after any text. Exchange will break off any text it finds after the attachment to a separate attachment.
    2. Replying to messages strips out the graphics, replacing them with angle-bracketed references, (e.g., "<image-name.jpg>") When participating in a long mail conversation with graphics inline, having the images stripped out like this essentially destroys the context for everyone.
I don't know of any automatic way to have attachments included in a reply, but here's how you do it for individual messages:
    Click Reply.
Make sure you do not highlight text to quote only part of the message. If you do highlight and quote selectively, make sure the desired attachment is highlighted as well.
Select Edit Menu - Attachments > Include Original Attachments in Reply

Oups !   I cannot send email from my computer using my iPhone's hot spot with Mail.
How do I do that ?

    Hi Templeton Peck,
Thanks for droping in my thread ...
Doesn't the fact that I can surf the web with my iPhone's hot spot and that I cannot use Mail normally has I normally do give you a clue what the problem could be ?
What other information can I give you other than normally I can surf and send email with my regular ISP.  Now that my ISP is dead I am using my iPhone's hotspot to surf the web awaiting that my ISP's connoection returns. Surfing is OK but I cannot send emails with through Mail.
When I want to send an email from my computer, I get a message asking me to select the the SMTP server.  Then I select my usual ISP server, but the message comes back telling me it does not work.
Is there any other configuration to do ?

  • Problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes after updating to 10.5.6

    Hi all,
after installing 10.5.6 I have problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes.
The time to open mails, websides and iTunes store is increasing dramatically since the update. If I open a webside parallel with Safari and Firefox, Safari needs minimum 15 times longer to open the complete side. Mails containing HTML-code also needs a long time to be opened. Tha same Problem with iTunes store. Connecting to the Store costs at least 30 - 40 seconds. And unfortunately for every iTunes store side I open. Its terrible
Any idea or workaroung to solve that problem?
    Regards
    Michael

First, run Disk Utility and repair permissions and then restart.
I installed the 10.5.6 Combo update. Sometimes things get "lost in the translation" when you use Software Update depending on your installation. Perhaps you can download 10.5.6 Combo from the website and install it from your desktop.

  • Problem with mail for exchange after update on E72...

    Hi everyone,
I updated Nokia E-mail to ver 3.9 on E72. Now I am facing  a problem with mail for exchange. I have configured gmail on mail for exchange. I recieve a warning that "unable to sync contact administrator if problem persist". It started to pop up just after the update was over and is very frustrating. Even previously i used to recieve mails instantly but now it generally takes half an hour for me to recieve them. I deleted and created mail for exchange several times but to no avail.
Also i am not able to automatically recieve mails other emails which i have configured. every time I have to manually download them everytime.
Can anybody suggest a way out.
    Thanks

It could be a problem if you're using your network's connections...
I was on a Pay & Go tariff with o2 some time ago, and needed secure connections for various things, o2 told me they didn't provide secure connections on Pay & Go tariffs...
Could be worth checking with them to make sure it's supported.

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.
