Serious X11 Problems - Reinstalling X11 made things far worse - PLEASE hel

I was trying to run Darwine and I got an error that said "_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: path too long", so after trying to find some info and finding nothing useful, I decided the easiest thing to do would be to reinstall X11 from the Leopard DVD. Well, now I have a COMPLETELY broken copy of X11 that REFUSES to start, and yet I can see the icon flash and disappear in the dock every 5 seconds like it's trying to autostart constantly. GIMP is broken (plus an old Release Candidate version seems to try to open up THREE copies of X11 and yet fails to start), Inkscape is broken, Darwine is still broken, and I'm REALLY mad.
How do I fix this?

Well, I followed the instructions on http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=80171&page=3 (the last post) and it worked great, but now when I start any X11 application it opens up 2 copies of X11, one of which I can quit, one of which actually is running the app. Also, Darwine and the Gimp Release Candidate work, but the latest version of Gimp from Wilber-Loves-Apple, as well as Inkscape, don't work. I think there was a patch for X11 that I installed for these long ago, but I can't remember how I fixed it.

  • Apple Disk Utility made thing substantially WORSE!

Our Powerbook 1.67 Ghz 15" Aluminum wouldn't run iCal (it quit unexpectedly) so we ran Apple Disk Utility. It said it couldn't verify so ran repair, then - 1 HFS volume checked couldn't be repaired. After this the computer would not run at all! Gray Apple screen with spinner until shutdown. Bought Apple tech support and went through all options of restarting with option button, etc, etc. Tried to do target disk something or another with fire wire between desktop and powerbook, that didn't work. HDD doesn't show as destination in utility "startup". They eventually said "All is Lost". What gives here? The thing was running fine, except for iCal, I ran Disk Repair - and now ALL is Lost? How can this be? Any advise GREATLY appreciated. We have family and business photos that number in the thousands at risk.

I agree, Disk Utility didn't kill your hard drive. The fact that it said it could not repair the disk says there is a problem that is more complex than Disk Utility can handle. Often, programs like Disk Warrior are one option used to fix those problems Disk Utility can't fix. You may want to try that. If Disk Warrior can't fix it, then you'll need to use a data recovery service to pull the data off. If you don't have one, buy a firewire backup (Powerbooks can only boot from a firewire device) to use with your replacement hard drive. One example might be http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go . SuperDuper is a good backup program: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
Do you have OS X CDs that you can boot from? Insert the first one and boot holding the C key down. That should boot to the CD. Pull up Disk Utility from the Utilities on the menu bar. First, what does it say for SMART status? If it's anything but verified, there's a pretty serious problem on the hard drive, as in close to failing. If it says verified, nothing has tripped the SMART sensors. Run disk utility and repair the disk ... does it still say it can't be repaired? If so, proceed as above.
Replacement hard drive would be a 2.5" parallel ATA interface hard drive. Serial ATA or SATA hard drives won't work in our Powerbooks. New drives mostly come in 5400rpm speed, some are slower and there's no reason to buy them.

  • Serious Ethernet problems I could use some help with please.

    Good day.
After about two weeks of trouble shooting I replaced the AP card in my MacPro.
No good, still not seeing networks.
I tried as a troubleshoot, plugging in a AP Express via Enet into my MacPro, it was seeing the Enet port for a while but now shows, via the Network prefs, that nothing is plugged into either Enet 1 or 2 ports. I've tried both.
I've done the usual, trashed the plist files, reset the PMU button/ctr-cmd-P-R etc., all with no avail.
Coupled with the orig problem of the MacPro and AP card setting an "Internet IP" number I'm thinking I have some type of ethernet "board" problem.
Can any give any suggestions short of bringing this beast in please?
    Thank you much.
    Tom

i haven't had ethernet on my pro since last year. I've tried over 25 configurations and tests and still, the leopard system im using has broken ethernet.
from this, this is what im going to ask/suggest.
    1) reinstall another copy of leopard (retail) on another hard drive. No migration assistant. I did this and i had ethernet again. But a virgin system and litterally days to reinstall everything. (which i didn't do). But the test worked.
    2) or if you have a working version of tiger, try it to test (you don't mention which macpro you have. some had tiger)
    3) have you tried networking with ethernet cables, just to see if that works? Not the AP, but directly to a router or another mac.
    4) if you have access to a dock/enclosure and another mac, try booting that other mac with your hard drive. If you have access, then its not the system, but the ethernet hardware in your pro.

Well these are not duplicate records....
And i m using TOAD i dont see any primary keys defined to these table. IS that is causing some problem ????
Yangkuan .....i think u were able to understand my question i guess.......the different columns are
    CUST_effective_dt-------
    Cust_expiration_dt------
    CUSt_class
these are the columns which are different....in my opinon these might be some problem with the logical design of the table.
    any thoughts please!!!!

  • MBP 2011 died and having problems reinstalling Mac OS

    Hello,
Having problems trying to make my MBP start working again...
    Tech info:
Early 2011 MBP, 10.6.6 preinstalled Mac OS X
    2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    256GB Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen Display
Was full updated up to date 3-4 days ago, so probably it was 10.6.7 before the crash.
I am pretty new to Macs and english is not my first language, so please excuse me if i use wrong terminology. Thanks.
It is pretty long story, the problem is - i can not install Mac OS X and make it work. The at the moment description of the situation is in Part 6, so you might want to skip parts 1-5, although reading those might be needed to understand the source of the problem or some details.
    The Story:
Everything worked great for about a month but then multi-language kernel panic windows asking me to reboot computer poped up. Reboot didnt help and it kept asking me for more and more reboots after like 1 minute after it logs in into Mac Os.
I had 3 programms(among others) installed: Kaspersky(fully updated trial), Parallels(activated a month age oem version, runing Windows 7 as a virtual machine without using Bootcamp) and virtualbox(activated 2 weeks ago, not being used or opened for ~10 days).
Part 1 - After logging into Mac OS 2 messages always pop'ed up:
    1) Kaspersky couldnt lunch in previous Mac OS startup(not current)
    2) Parallels message: Its time to choose either to use trial Parallels or to enter activation key. Thats really weird because it was activated a month ago, was fully updated and worked great every day. When i tried to activate it again it just didnt accept the key which was accepted last time: the icon was still grey and not clickable, rechecked 10 times at that moment.
Ok, decided to uninstall both Kaspersky and Parallels via Safe Mode. Safe Mode is working fine. Removed programms by dragging them from application folder to trash can. Worked fine. Logged into normal mode. No messages appear except the "Hello, you had kernel last time", but still Kernel appear in 2-3 minutes. Logging in 32b mode(by pressing 32 while booting up) doesn't help either.
Part 2 - Rebooted. Booted from boot DVD and used Disk utility - nothing is wrong.
Went to safe mode again. Found Kernel Log and it showed me that the source of the error was some file of VirtualBox(at least it has virtualbox in its name. Virtualbox itself, again, wasn't launched for like 10 days) located in /extension folder. Removed virtualbox program by dragging it from applications folder to trash. Worked fine, but those files in /extension folder weren't deleted. I am pretty new to Macs, so i wasn't sure if those are really VirtualBox programm's files or Mac OS system files, so i decided to reboot and check if the problem still not fixed.
Result: You cant boot neither in normal mode or in Safe mode. It just doesnt react on anything.
    No backups. Great.
Part 3. Booted via boot DVD. Worked fine. Checked if disc was ok - it wasn't ok. Tried to repair - cant repair, suggests me to reinstall.
Made a backup on external HDD(have it atm, so iа you need any info i can get from that backup to help you guys understand what happened - ask and i will give it to you asap).
Erased internal HDD with zeroes(1 row), it still has 4 files on it(around 300 mb), probably those are the files copied from Boot DVD, but i am not sure.
Part 4. Tried to install Mac OS from boot DVD. File system is for Mac os with journaled option activated. Installation process starts fine but at some point(around 25-30% while telling me its around 30 minutes left) the error message appears telling mу the installation couldn't be continued because it cant copy some files from DVD(no particullar files mentioned). Advising me to reboot and try again. Same thing happens always.
DVD disk was never used and even not unpacked before, looks fine...
Part 5. Inserted the boot DVD in another mac, made a copy via disk utility in mac os(without booting using this disc), copied it to external drive where the backup is. So there are 2 files on external drive: backup.dmg and starupDVD.dmg.
Pulled in the external hdd to MBP and tried clicking option key to choose him to boot from HDD. Nothing happens, just mouse appears without any windows where i can choose the boot option. Weird. Tried all 3 usb ports, same problem. Tried to put the DVD disk and click option key - both mouse and window appears, but only DVD boot option avaivable.
Tried to reset RAM by clicking Command-Option-P-R keys. Reset went fine(the sound and so on), but it didn't effect on anything.
Part 6(this very moment): So here i am. Have erased internal HDD with 4 files in it(around 300 mb, dont know what), boot DVD which came along with MBP with 10.6.6 MaсOS, external HDD with the same DVD and backup.
Disk utility says my internal HDD is ok.
Clicking option key doesnt make my MBP see external HDD while it is plugged in any usb port, only mouse appears. Same option key sees dvd disk if it is plugged in and boots normally.
You can see and work with external HDD if you boot from boot DVD.
Installation process starts both fine on internal and external HDDs. On internal it crashed with "cant copy files" message at ~20-30%(~30 minutes left), on external the screen just turns grey with moveable mouse on it without any messages at around 30%(~40 minutes left).
External HDD - Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB 3.0
Internal HDD - 256gb SSD which came from Apple (sorry for calling it internal HDD)
    Think its pretty much it...
What should i do to make this thing work? Pretty much desperate already.
    Thank You for any help.
    Sincerely yours,
    Alexander.

Just one more thing - the description of what i did while first Kernel appeared:
Happened 2 days ago. Wasn't turning it off for like a day, only sleep mode by closing it. Worked fine all day, wasn't doing anything, except for checking mail 2-3 times and having windows 7 virtual machine opened but doing nothing, everything was going fine. Then closed it without turning off.
Opened 3-4 hours later, everything was working fine for 30 minutes of checking mail, then Kernel appeared. After that pretty much everything i did is described in part 1-5.
Note: all the time MBP was connected to internet via wifi, so updates to both MBP and virtual machine of all programs were possible.
I only shared downloads and desktop folders, so windows couldn't have access to system folder of Mac Os.
    Hope this might help...Thanks again.

  • Accidentally associated Adobe AIR file with Acrobat, now an otherwise easily fixed problem has been causing me far too much anger.

I accidentally associated an Adobe AIR file to open Adobe Acrobat in it's stead, now an otherwise easily fixed problem has been causing me far too much anger.
Basically I downloaded an .air file after recently reformatting my computer, and I tried to open it with Acrobat. Now, since there is no actual application and or shortcut created by AIR I can't just tell the file to use that. I've found that I'm not alone in this issue, have tried a few things I've read on both this forum and others, and have come to no resolution as of yet. This file isn't anything of any great significance, but it bugs me so much that at this point I just want to know how to fix this and win this little battle.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

Thank JJMack - that has helped me get closer to the problem.
I opened the resource monitor and you can see a screenshot of what is going on when I try to save a simple, 9 Kb graphic. (I'm saving an RGB JPG, not a PNG or animated GIF file. Doing anything complex / memory intensive than saving or simple edits in PS is almost impossible.)
As you can see from the screencap below, when I save (it doesn't make a difference if it is save vs. save to web or a network or local drive) Photoshop becomes unresponsive. (From past experiences, if I try to switch to a non-Adobe program it will also freeze and sometimes crash.) When PS becomes unresponsive, the NT Kernel & System immediately goes to the top of the list and uses 200+ threads.
From there Photoshop will typically be frozen for about a minute, then will recover and take another minute or two to finish the save. At that point PS is okay, but the rest of the computer is still frozen with CPU oscillating up to almost 100%.
As soon as the NT Kernel & System settles down, everything is back to normal again (as long as I haven't used other programs, which in one case required a hard reboot.)
It is pretty clear the problem is rooted in Adobe / Window 7 as I only have this problem with Adobe programs. (Illustrator isn't as bad, but I've had problems with it as well.)
The question is: How do I fix this, as it is killing my ability to work?
    Thanks! Julie

FireFox auto updated to 6.0 this weekend and has not worked properly since. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Made sure all windows componets were up to date and still no joy. Any idea? Windows 7, 64 bit, normal configfuration. It is extreamly slow and never finishes loading ANY page.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • HT5149 Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found. Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard

Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
    1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
    2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
    3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
    4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
    5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
Any suggestions on what I should try now?
Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...

Sounds like there is a file you're not getting.  Never do a removal manually.  It's so time consuming and a pain.  There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Download from scratch.
If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives.

  • Serious performance problems on iWeb site

Can anyone help me find the problem with peterlance.com? It looks like author Peter Lance uses iWeb to update his web site. He redesigned it recently (and did not use iWeb for the old design). Anyway, it has serious performance problems on Internet Explorer, which I was hoping you guys could help pinpoint? Is there something simple I can tell him to try to fix the problem? He is launching a new book on Tuesday so he will be getting a lot of traffic, but for now the response time is not very good. Any suggestions?
In particular, each new page seems to hang for about ten seconds and freeze using Internet Explorer 6. Any fixes?
I mean, fixes other than: "Don't use Internet Explorer!"

    name="Generator" content="iWeb 1.1.2"

    Welcome to the discussions, TopDog08.
There are several plain .jpg's and that's good, but you need to convert every .png on the page (or as many .png's as you can) to a .jpg. For example,
    http://www.peterlance.com/Peter%20Lance/Home/Homefiles/shapeimage46.png
Convert that to a jpg, then replace the graphic and text on the iWeb page with this converted jpg (some have has success using Downsize http://www.stuntsoftware.com/Downsize/)
The ones you won't be able to do anything about are the ones that are a part of the blog, but that will be only 5 images instead of the many you have now.
    This image
    http://www.peterlance.com/Peter%20Lance/Home/Homefiles/shapeimage50.png
Is covering part of your menu which is why it appears that only the top half is sensitive to rolling over. You'll have to adjust your layout to account for this.
Another area to look at, there are white boxed png's surrounding the amazon book covers at the top.
    http://www.peterlance.com/Peter%20Lance/Home/Homefiles/imageEffectsAboveAli%20Mug%20TPI%20jpg.png
Another set of .png's you'll have to get rid of. How did those get put on the page?
What you see happening with IE is a java script running to fix IE's problem with png's. The fewer .png's you have, the less of a problem with IE you have.

  • Serious performance problems after updating from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7

I've got a Macbook Pro C2D 15" (late 2006). After updating the system from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 and quicktime to 7.6.2, I experience serious performance problems which I have never seen before:
-From time to time, kernel_task has peaks in activity monitor (consumes a lot of CPU). In that moment, the mouse hangs for a short moment and audio playback is distorted/has drop outs.
-Recording audio consumes a lot of CPU (independent of the audio application).
-Video playback consumes a lot of CPU, regardless if I use VLC or the quicktime player.
Any idea what could be done? Thanks in advance.

After a few days of using CoolBook I report that my 1st generation MacBook Air is now reliable and never overheating, regardless of environment conditions.
I must point out that I do believe that it really is something new in 10.5.7 that is causing this problem as my environmental conditions have not changed and even Summer in Dublin still sees temperatures no more than 72F/22C. I am now in Madrid, where the environment is quite different, and I am still having no problem with kernel_task spinning.
I plan on reporting my problem to Apple anyway and being aggressive about the issue as MacLovinRanga did in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9647353#9647353). Perhaps many/all of those of us having this problem will obtain new MacBook Airs.

  • Recent software upgrade has changed the way my iPhone syncs with my macbook, and diary items no longer upload from my iPhone. I've tried a to fix it and seem to have made things worse. What is the best way to get the two devices in sync ?

Recent software upgrades has changed the way my iPhone syncs with my macbook and items entered on my iPhone are no longer uploaded to my macbook. I've tried to fix it and seem to have made things worse, my iPhone now has a long list of calanders that I don't want and can't delete and nothing is uploading to my macbook.

You need to look at Mac's iTunes, check  > System Preferences > iCloud.
If you use iCloud for Calendar, Contacts then turn off those items in iTunes, Info tab with your iPhone connected and selected.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server...please check the share name..every 3 seconds.  made computer useless

there was a problem connecting to the server...please check the share name..every 3 seconds.  made computer useless. Lion.  It only complains about one of my PCs that usually shares OK with the imac.

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.

  • I am having a problem reinstalling osx.

I am having a problem reinstalling osx. Disk utility reports the following disk errors:
    1. Unused node is not erased.
    2. Volume bitmap needs monor repair for orphaned blocks
I have tried verifying and repairing disks and get message that it cannot be repaired after 3 attempts.  Anyone encountered anything like this?
    Thanks,
    Rich.

Clean the bottom of the installer disk carefully with a soft cloth and a little bit of rubbing alcohol to take off the fingerprints, don't touch the bottom or let it get damaged.
Once it's dry then stick it in the MacBook
Hold c and reboot off the installer disk and use Disk Utility under the menu to select the hard drive makers name, then Erase tab (format HFS+ journaled) Security Option > Zero All Data and click Erase....
This will erase all the partitions on the drive and also map off all bad sectors, takes some time.
Once done quit and use the installer to install OS X.
If it fails it could be the disk is bad.
