Server Add on

Just curious if anyone would be interested in purchasing a server add on app.
The features that would be in it
1) Hide wikis from people not logged in (unless the wiki permissions are set that way)
2) Hide people (with no error screens)
3) Search will only bring up wikis you have access to
4) Add security questions to password and allow users to reset the password from the web app
Possible feature
Webmail
any other features people would like to see?

The easiest way to get most of that is with a web content management system (CMS).   Most, because you're also spanning some other areas...
Apple's wiki stuff is nice, but it's pretty limited, and there are various very capable CMS packages available. 
I happen to use Drupal, but WordPress is also popular, and there are a large number of CMS packages available, and with many tailored for various or specific uses or tasks.
The available CMS packages are more complex to install, and the installation and configuration instructions and upgrade instructions and the integration instructions often either don't cover OS X Server at all, or the available instructions cover specific (and usually older) versions.
With Mountain Lion Server, you're also left to scrounge up a webmail client if you need that.
There have been help desk package and help desk password reset discussions on the Mac Enterprise mailing list (and probably in the now-archived OS X Server Apple mailing lists), and there are various help desk packages available.  This is also feasible of course, but can be mildly tricky to implement securely, as it's got a very large target painted on it.  This given nefarious folks are going to try to reset the passwords of others, and given that you're going to need to store and to securely access password data.  You'll want to bcrypt or scrypt the answers, too.
Put another way, you're looking at (or for) something that spans a CMS, (potentially) a web mail client, and a help desk.

    Ran into this myself on a new MacMini Server. I renamed the ServerVersion.plist file in /System/Library/CoreServices/. That allowed the install to start. Unfortunately it seems the installer is setup to install that at the same time. I renamed the file back before the restart and it complained on restart that the server install wasn't found.
    So I thought I would try downloading it on another computer with Lion. That didn't work either. As soon as it finished download it installed and deleted the installer.
    What a pain.
    If you can start from scratch, you should be able to rename the file, do the Lion install then after the Lion install rename it back. Then do the server install. I'm not sure what that will do to existing server configs though. There must be some reason Apple set up the Lion installer this way.
    Oh, now I can't reboot into my existing OS. It keeps rebooting into the installer. Tried the option key and both options are named something like base os. Neither boots my existing Snow Leopard. Gonna have to get an external DVD drive and install from scratch I think. Luckily this is a new server not in production, so not a big deal. I hope people with production machines read the boards and tread carefully.

    the message is normal, you are requested to wait!
    check that, when "install" is pressed in App Store a new icon should go to your dock (the "install MacOSX lion" application itself).
    the upgrade is up to 4Gb and apple serves at no more than 200-400Kbps (at least to my country), so be patient.
    If you need more patience, but JUST NOOOOOWWW!!! =)
    then you can see your network activity in Utilities -> Activity Monitor -> Network
    Let us know if there is no Activity during the download!
    And also if you successfully install lion!

    Can anyone tell me the exact location of the jscpout.txt file so that  i can check
    whether the Tomcat server add on has been successfully installed or not.

    I have downloaded the tomcat addon from the sapnote 1009703 but it is a zipfile.
    I am looking for the file MAP70_WinCESetupTomcat_Tomcat.CAB file.
    Though i have copied the add on to the device using Active sync.
    The client installer has been created on my pc and again i try to
    find the tomcat cab file but i can see only the txt file.
    Can you suggest how to get the tomcat cab file and how to run on the device.
    And the location of the jscpout.txt file so that i can check the tomcat
    installation successful or not.

        The jscpout.txt file is present in the root folder of the PDA (i.e directly under \ ).  The tomcat addon that is attached to note 1009703 will only be zip fie and not a cab file since this needs to be installed only after you have successfully installed MAP70_WinCESetupTomcat_Tomcat.CAB which is nothing but the MI JSP client installer for PDA. So the steps are as below
    1. Install Creme JVM (Creme 3.27A)
    2. Install MAP70_WinCESetupTomcat_Tomcat.CAB.
    3. Sync to obtain a device id.
    4. Upload and assign tomcat addon to the device.  The steps for this is mentioned in note 1009703 itself.

  • Mac Mini Upgrade to Lion with USB: can't download Server Add On

    I have a Mac Mini on Snow Leopard and I bought the Lion USB key to upgrade to Lion. I have a weak internet connection. Unfortunately, the first thing that happens when I insert the USB key and start the upgrade is that it needs to download the Server Add On. What is very bad is that it says to look on the App Store app to monitor the download but there is nothing happening here. My ADSL box shows no activity. Why do I have to download this? how many Mb is it? can I skip it somehow? If I cancel, it cancels the installation...
    I am very disappointed and unhappy by this, I thought I would upgrade to Lion easily, especially after buying the USB key for 69 euros (I live in France).

    I bought the Lion OS and Lion Server add on for my Mac Mini Server which runs Snow Leopard Server. When trying to install the Lion,
    it requests the Add on to be available, however the add on requests the Lion to be already installed before it can be downlaoded through
    App store. I made my purchases over the phone as neither was available in stores anymore. Egg and chiken dilema.
    I do not have a physical DVD with the Snow Leopard (Client) to follow some of the instructions I have read in the communities. Any
    workaround?

    For the Mini you must have Lion client installed to purchase the Server. You can download Lion from the Mini while it's running Snow Leopard. Once Lion is installed you should then be able to purchase the Server.
    Unlike past OS X Server releases the bulk of the software is within the Lion client. The Server is more or less a type of add-on to provide all the Server utilities and support. It's a relatively small download compared to the client.

  • Mountain Lion Server: add network user to remote management

    So recently I have upgraded from Lion Server to ML Server. A little disappointing, but whatever, I've moved on and got everything almost back to where I had it with Lion.
    My last few issues I believe are related but can't quite figure it out. In Lion I have an admin profile and then a network user profile that I used on my MBP bound with AD. I'm at the stage where my nre network user can log in on the server machine but I can't log in as the network user via screen sharing. I can't add a network user to Remote Management, and with Remote Management enabled Screen Sharing is greyed out. I'd really like this to work.
    My second problem is that I can't bind my MBP to the server but even when bound the network user account can't log in.
    Any body have  any ideas?

    I had this problem on a clean install.
    The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
    That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.

    However, I try to put extra field DocStatus for oInvoice(OINV) by adding new line
    <DocStatus>O<DocStatus> in between <CardCode>BP</CardCode> and </row>, the Soap response with
    Faulty reason "Property 'DocStatus' of 'Document' is invalid".
    I know I can run another request to update the DocStatus but this seems not a good solution.
    Is there other way to do it?

    Make sure the file is "hinted" . You can add this setting when exporting a video from Quicktime.

  • 4 CPU server - add 5th for OS?

    Good day all.
    We had an issue today that cause a DB server (4 CPU SQL VM) to run at 100% CPU load.  I was able to get onto the RDP session but then it was too hard to navigate around due to slow response.  I was thinking of adding a 5th CPU and set the SQL affinity
    to only use 4 of the 5 CPU and reserve the 5th for the OS.  Thinking that if something like this happens again, I can still get to my troubleshooting tools.  What’s your thoughts on this?  Thanks in advance.

    That all depends on what the issue was. If was an issue with the VM or OS itself, this probably won't do anything. If it was an issue with SQL Server using all of the CPUs, I would first look at what your maxdop settings were and if it might make sense to
    implement resource governer should it come from some specific source such as your reporting area.
    Since we don't know the root cause, it's hard to tell you if it'll make any sense or not. Either way, I wouldn't use affinity as a solve.

  • Steps to connect SQL Server to Oracle works but WHY ??

    The following steps is what I have to do in order to get SQL Server to talk to an Oracle database.
    These steps, for me, work 100% of the time. Any deviation from the following steps will result in failure.
    Rebooting the machine didn't make any difference between each of the steps.
    My question is why I have to install the client a second time?
    All the documentation that I have found at Oracle, Microsoft, or elsewhere state that I only need the InstantClient.

    Windows XP SP3 - 32bit
    with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP3 installed
    The following steps are done on the Windows XP machine.
    1) install win32_11gR2_client
    Select: InstantClient (174.0MB)
    Path: C:\Oracle
    2) install ODTwithODAC112021
    Select: Oracle Data Access Components for Oracle Client
    Oracle Base: C:\Oracle
    Name: OraClient11g_home1
    Path: C:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1
    3) Add entries for tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora
    4) Ensure environmental variable ORACLE_HOME is set to C:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1

    Check "Allow Inprocess" for Oracle Provider OraOLEDB.Oracle
    Restart SQL Server
    Try to add link to Oracle - fails to connect

    You actually installed the client *3* times there.
    I'm fairly sure install Instant client via win32_11gR2_client will not give you oraoledb. ODAC and administrator/runtime will though.
    You should only need install ODTwithODAC112021 OR win32_11gR2_client (with runtime or administrator option) and be able to connect using SQLServer.

    So they added a whole stack of other functionality, but still didn't get around to taking a look at this bug. I'm stunned. Is there any sort of timeline on fixing this, or is 2012 R2 just going to remain unsupported forever?
