"server may not exist" error WITHOUT Classic

Hi,
My wife's iMac displays an alert reading "Connection Failed: the server may not exist or is not operational at this time", etc. every few minutes. I've turned off all the network-related things I can think of (.mac sync, network time sync, etc) and cleared all of the information in the "Connect to server..." menu item. Also, Classic is not installed on this machine.
I think this line in the console log is connected to the problem:
nbp_lookup: zip_getmyzone failed
If anyone can figure out how to help me get rid of this alert, I'd be grateful! Thanks!

This is what I get when I try and connect to it...looks like it can't find the devices IP address, buts a fixed ip on a local network. How do I check/change what address it's looking for?

  • Error "Connection Failed The server may not exist or is not operational..."

This is just FYI in case somebody else runs across this. On one user account, an error window would pop up every so often that said:
    Connection Failed
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
It turns out that the problem was caused by Screen Saver. The error popped up whenever screen saver tried to launch. On the problem account I had the "Pictures" folder selected for the screen saver, and apparently there must be an alias in that folder pointing to something on a remote server, because as soon as I go to System Preferences and open the Screen Saver panel, I get the error.
It has been driving me crazy for months but finally I thought to look in Console, where I saw the error "afp_mount[5045] CFLog (0): CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1103 (0x44f), port = 0x2d03, name = 'com.apple.afp_mount.ServiceProvider'"
Searching for that error led me to the Macosxhints forum at http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-53209.html where a user had posted the same problem. Changing to a different screen saver or a different folder for pictures resolved the issue.

  • Since upgrade to Mac OS 10.7.2L , recurring error message: "There was a problem connecting to the server "servername". The server may not exist...etc."

Since upgrade to Mac OS 10.7.2 Lion, on MacBookPro, recurring (every minute or so) error message: "There was a problem connecting to the server "servername". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network conneection, and then try again." (The server specified is no longer connected or used). The error message must be clicked twice to continue to work on the computer. Time Machine is switched off. No external disks are connected. Keychain entries for "servername" have been removed since the problem arose. Is there any way to prevent this error message?

I am having the same problem; have tried deleting some of the plist files as others suggested but to no avail.  Tried turning off time machine - that didn't fix it either.  Very dispappointing.

  • 'The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time.'

Since updating to 5.1.4 with my crossgrade I get the following message as it looks to each of the Firewire drives in my set... 'The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.'
I know this is supposedly something to do with Appleshare. Any ideas?

A server you have at one time been connected to is no longer available. You may have your System Settings using a server for a media drive. < </div>
Your OS is looking for a rogue server. It could be anything that you were connected to at any time in the past that you perhaps forgot to unmount or disconnect from before power off. Servers are usually Ethernet connections, maybe an FTP session or you may have aborted a download.
However, you might be getting a completely bogus error. Can only suggest your run Repair Permissions once or twice and maybe start form you OS10 DVD and run Disk Utility-Repair Disk. Can't hurt.

Every time I try to connect to my 2TB Airport Time Capsule I get the following message "The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."  However, if I unplug it and then plug it in again, I can connect to it.  How can this be corrected without having to unplug it all the time?

    Are you using Yosemite??
This is stock standard yosemite bug and we have no simple fix for you..
You can fix it at its source..
Hack in DNS from Mavericks.. so Yosemite can be raised to a level of reliability above GHASTLY.. !!
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
Apple still have not fixed it.. and users are now sick and tired of the problem.. so have resorted to what can only be described as extreme measures.. in fact I wonder why people don't just revert to Mavericks.. or earlier.. whatever OS was reliable.. instead of seeing the latest greatest update as necessity.

  • Connection Failed - The Server May Not Exist

On two 10.4.7 machines, when I try to connect to a 10.3.9 machine, I get a message that the server may not exist. It was working fine last week, then all were shut down over the weekend.
When I choose Network on the Desktop, the server shows up on the list as long as it's running, so the list of available servers recognizes it. Although I'm sure nothing was changed, I've checked and re-checked sharing and network settings on all three computers. IP addresses are correct and so are the names of the computers. I've run utilities on the 10.3.9 machine and one of the 10.4.7 machines. I've restarted every computer. The result remains the same.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Only thing I can think of is that a setting did get changed or borked on the 10.3.9 machine.
Appletalk is available in both OSes, but Tiger can no longer do AFP over Appletalk... think it just uses it for "Discovery", so I'm thinking the 10.3.9 machine is trying to communicate via Appletalk instead of TCP/IP.
Have you tried from the Finder>CMDk>afp:// the actual IP of the other machine?

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue.

Hi, I'm trying to set up my Time Machine, but I get this message: The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again. how to resolve?

Did you reboot the TC? That is always the first step.
Reboot the whole network if that is not enough.
If you still have issues.. come back to us but generally the best way is to factory reset the TC and start over.
We need a bit more info on the whole network layout and what OS you are running. What model TC you have??

  • Server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time when automounting

I have an AFP share on a Netgear ReadyNAS set to auto mount in login items. After upgrade to 10.6.5, it no longer works... Every time I log in, I get the msg:
Server Iridium.local may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network conditions, and try again.
(Iridium is server name.) I have had this happen on two separate networks with two different Macs and two differnet NAS boxes. Both have same configuration.
Neither dragging the share into login itemsnor using an AppleScript mount script in login items works.
Changing to CIFS or SMB and not using .local extension seems to work, but takes longer.
I've seen at least one other post (in a thread on something else), so I know I'm not alone. Any ideas?

I'm having exactly the same problem.  I've grep searched all the .plist files in my preferences and deleted references to this volume, but that didn't help.  Clearly FCPX is trying to preload external media for the media browser or something that is referencing this old volume, but I cannot tell what it is. Sadly, FCPX is leaving no more detailed messages about what's going wrong in the Console, either.
For lack of a better "solution" I'm just moving that box down to the lower left corner, almost completely dragging it off the screen without clicking OK.  You can still use FCPX without a problem.  Just leave enough of the box on the screen so that you can drag it back up and click OK if you need/want to.

  • The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.

The above message keeps appearing.  How do I get if out of the way permanently.

It may not be possible .. there is a major bug between Mountain Lion and the TC where the TC disk goes off the radar of the computer.
Lion is also affected but not as badly.
7.6.4 seems worse than earlier firmware.. so back to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2 if that is possible.
Obviously that is not a solution for a later Gen5 TC.
Reset to factory after the firmware downgrade. .use all network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
If the TC is the main router set the dhcp to a very short lease time.. eg 30min.. and see how it goes, or try a longer lease like 99days.
I prefer the very short lease but response has been mixed.
Use ethernet not wireless.. ethernet is always more reliable and stable than wireless.
And last .. a nightly electric timer that powers off every night at midnight for 1min.. would not be the first device we have suggested a fix that amounts to beat the unit to the punch by forcing it to reboot since it is unstable.

  • Two days ago I started receiving this message,  "The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again." I have no idea what to do or what I did to get this mess

ssage. I use Time Capsule to store my iTunes library and to back up with Time Machine. Since I started receiving this message, Time Machine is no longer backing up and I can't access my iTunes library. Any ideas what happened? I also use Time Capsule for all of my wireless devices. Apple TV is working fine, my iPads are accessing the Internet fine. I just can't seem to access the information contained on the drive.

Here is another part of the error message I continue to receive
"There was a problem connecting to tge server "David-Kimmels-Time-Capsule.local".
If anyone could help I would surely appreciate. Going crazy not able to access iTunes.

  • The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time

When I am away from my home office (and home network), I get this error message repeatedly.      Any resolution ideas?

  • Connection Failure / May Not Exist or is Unavailable

Got an AirPort Extreme (802.11n, version 7.4.2), connected to a Belkin ADSL2+ Wired Modem. There are 2 Western Digital 2Tb HDDs (My Book + My Book Studio Edition) connected to the AirPort that I'm using for backups. One is used by Time Machine (OS backup) and the other by Super Duper (work backup).
Have been having some trouble with the two drives being unavailable to connect to. Happens once every day or so. At that stage I can see it listed under Shared (in the finder) but when I click on the Connect As option (upper right, finder window) I get a Connection Failed window (The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again).
File sharing is enabled, "with AirPort Extreme password", and Remember password in my keychain checked. Guest access is "not allowed", it's not sharing the disks over the Internet and it's not configured for Windows File Sharing.
If I manually restart the AirPort they become available again, and work as expected. I'd like to fix this so I don't need to keep restarting. Any thoughts?

I'm having the same problem, but a slightly different scenario. I just setup my network and my wireless Macbook Pro can access the external drives but my iMac which is connected to the Base Station through ethernet cannot.
Same deal though. I can see the Base Station in the Finder, but then I get a connection failure message when I click on the icon.
