Server newbie, Can I do this:

I have a 2011 Mac mini, two MBPs, two iPads and two iPhones in the household. Currently the mini hosts the iPhoto and iTunes libraries with Home Sharing on to access from other devices. Here's what I'd like to do with Server, but not sure if everything I want is possible. Any and all help appreciated.
VPN - I'd like to set up a VPN so when traveling and accessing the internet, all connections will be secure.
Sharing of mini files/libraries while away from the home network. Is this possible through VPN including the iPhoto and iTunes libraries?
Network logins - I'm not sure if this is part of Open Directory or not. Have been trying to understand this, but not sure if OD is needed if there is only one machine serving.
Web serving - I think I've got this one down

I'm running 10.8.2 client on my rMBP too and I also use DynDNS for a domain name. You don't need to add users to OD for VPN. You only need OD if you're creating network users to use your server as a network file repository.
With VPN, you simply turn on VPN on OS X Server and enter your DynDNS domain name and your passphrase you want to use for clients to connect with. Then, on the client side, you go into System Preferences/Network and add a VPN connection. You would enter your DynDNS as the Server Address, the OS X Server's account name you want to authenticate to (I use my server admin account), click the Authentication Settings button and enter the account name's password and your VPN passphrase. You should also check the Advance button on the DNS tab and make sure you have both your name server IP and domain (ISP) name added. You would use the same values as you have on the VPN setup (DNS Settings: X name server, X domain name) on OS X Server. Here's a link that might help.
I don't think I'm much help with your U-Verse router questions regarding OD. I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station router and I know I didn't have any errors setting up OD or VPN.

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

The wifi symbol only indicates the presence/signal strength of wifi. Not that you are connected.
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app

    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. That's the way IMAP and Exchange accounts work. They synchronize the message store completely between the server and all clients.
If you don't really want to delete it, then don't delete it. File it into a folder instead.

Apple ID can not be created because of a server error, can I skip this step and come back later?

Newbie can't compile this

Hi guys I'm a new Java programmer trying to learn this java thing. Anyway I have two classes in the same directory, class B compiles fine.
Class A have a problem reaching the B file why is this? Code follows.

You have to enter the Apple ID and password. You are running into the Activation Lock

HT4178 Mac server OSX 10.8.2 Netistall doesn't have image, how can I fix this?

I tried to switch on Netinstall on just on just brand new Apple mini server, all the data have filed and green light is on, except of Netinstall which requesting me to add an image and file in the library/netboot/ is empty for that. If even I try to add it on the NEtinstall page, there small gear tab blanked and cn not modified at all whatever I did, I have not modified any thing there - so that is suprice why on the new apple happening with me that, may be a problem in a software or I just don't know somne thing. On the apple support page also there is no information for OSX10.8.2 server how can I fix this problem, Could some one explain how is possible to finaly make an image and make netinsall to work, I will be much appreciated for that,

You need to create a NetInstall image using System Image Utility. You can launch it from the "Tools" menu of Server.app.
To use System Image Utility, you will need an installed volume, or an Install Mac OS X application from the Mac App Store.

Server Monitor can't see server

Machine and OS specs:
2 x 2GHz Dual Core Intel Xserve using 1 x ethernet port
OS X 10.4.10
I have just installed a new Xserve set up with mirrored RAID drives which is working perfecty apart from the Server Monitor will not connect just giving the message 'waiting for response'. I have tried all the various admin and root passwords and even tried to connect from my older G4 Xserve with the LOM password, but get the same result. All other administration software works fine.
I have searched various forums and advice sites, but the suggestions I've found have not worked. I read that the com.apple.hwmond.plist can be edited to <false/> from <default/>, but when I open the file in a text editor I get this:

When I try to connect to the server via it's Terminal by typing ssh -l adminuser (my IP address) I get the message: 'The authenticity of host '(my IP address) (my IP address) can't be established'. This leads me to think something else is up. I can ping it OK.
I have tried pretty much everything I can think of including manually setting IP addresses etc, but I would really appreciate any help or advice with this one.

On the XServe launch Server Monitor, select Add Server and in the IP Address field key in 127.0.0.1 or localhost. In the Name and Password fields key in the default System Administrator account details. Click on Save password in keychain and select a suitable Update every settiing. If you launch WGM you will see the System Administrator account already listed in the local NetInfo node (UID 501). Use the short name as listed in WGM.
Although I have not had the chance to do this yet, but enabling Lights Out Management (LOM) opens port 623 which Server Monitor can use. This may allow for remotely using Server Monitor to monitor the XServe.

After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning network issues:

Follow these steps to troubleshoot the above issues:
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your Wi-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary? How do I do this if so?

Roadrunner is POP email, and the feature you are looking for
is a function of IMAP email. Roadrunner has not announced
any plans to make IMAP available. If this is important to you,

It sounds like you're seeing an alert message when opening Mail on your iOS devices. Do you have multiple email accounts setup on the devices? I've got a Mac Pro, a G5 and a Powerbook (non-intel) that I use as primary machines. I have an old G4 running 10.4.11. I'd like to use it as an always-on server, but can I reach it from the Mac Pro network? It doesn't show up as a normal networked machine.

Mount that Share once, then once the Globe Icon shows up on the Desktop, drag that Globe Icon to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash. You now have a Dynamic Mount, a quick click on the Icon in the Dock will connect you.
On the multiple Shortcuts...
Mount them all, when show up on the Desktop, then create a new Folder maybe named Shares on/in the Desktop, drag all those Shares shown on the Desktop to that Folder, (you can even rename them once there, if you wish), drag that Folder to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash, this should give you a popup menu to select from.:-)
