Service name problem

I have a 9i database on Windows 2000 machine. I have created a database by copying the files of a cold backup of another database. I created an init file. I created the service. I created new control files. I setup the database in Net Manager, but I cannot connect to the database using enterprise manager or net manager. I checked the tnsnames file and the entry is in there for the new database. ButI still get the ORA 12514 error. I CAN connect to the database using sqlplus from the DOS prompt and connecting:
conn sys/sys as sysdba
Any ideas about what is wrong?

    I just resolved this same problem, so maybe this will help you. From the server try the following:
    Do you have $TNS_ADMIN defined in your environment variables? echo $TNS_ADMIN
    cd $TNS_ADMIN
    Are sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora located here?
    When you type "tnsping test.world" does tnsping show that it's using the same sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files that you're viewing? {test.world is a real database for me, so choose an appropriate substitute}
    Does the tnsping show OK (0 msec)?
    Did you FTP these files from another server? You MUST transfer them in ASCII (not the Linux FTP default of binary). The binary FTP seems to cause the OK (0 msec) problem.
    Does your sqlnet.ora have the following line?
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    Make sure to delete that if it does.

    OK, then pls follow below steps;
    - Go to step 'Create Users' in solman_setup System Preparation scenario and make sure the user SM_INTERN_WS has a green status. Use the 'Test Login' button to make sure the user is not locked and has correct credentials maintained in solman_setup
    - Immediately after checking the user status, navigate to Configure Connectivity->Enable Web Services and execute again the 'Create Logical Ports' automatic activity, in order to propagate the correct credentials to the Logical Port definitions.
    - If the above operation is not successful, repeat the two steps above, providing a different user Id in 'Create Users' step, eg SM_INTERN_W1. This will prevent situations where the user gets locked by Logical Ports using an obsolete password.

    I am faced with a fundamental problem:
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
    I can say with a high level of confidence that the TNSNAMES.ora configuration file is not the problem. My peer is using the exact same file with no issues. I am using the TOAD database utility to connect to the db host. Also, I have ORACLE_HOME defined and the file is located in /network/ADMIN.
    Any ideas?

  • Oracle8i Start problem - TNS:Service Name Incorrect

    Hi Folks
    My installation of Oracle8i was working fine. I installed webDB today and that was worked fine too.
    But before shutting down the machine I forgot to shutdown the database.
    When I reboot and try to start the database as root thus: ./oracle8i start, I get the following error -
    ORA-12162 TNS:Service name is incorrectly specified.
    Looks like something is wrong with SID or TNSNAMES.
    Could somebody suggest a solution please.

    For information sake, if someone else comes across the same situation, here is the cause and solution:
    When webDB2.2 is installed it seems to make an entry in the /etc/oratab file for the service name that is provided during installation. Cosequently my 'oratab' file went from:
    ora8i:/../oracle/product/8.1.6:Y
    To:
    *:/../oracle/product/8.1.6:Y
    ora8i:/../oracle/product/webdb22:N
    Hence the problem when 'oratab' is invoked.
    I don't know if webDB is supposed to make this kind of a change.
    I replaced the '*' with 'ora8i' and everything works fine including webDB

    It is so clear: host not found error for network connection and the other SID servcie name not found means your oracle instance name is not up. check with srvctl status for given servcie name or node, else check CRS_Stat -t if you are using RAC.

  • EM doesn't allow creation of tnsnames.ora entry with service name orcl11gr2

    Dear all,
    I'm trying to create a net service name with EM Database Control, via Net Services Administration link. On the service name field, under the 'Edit Net Service Name' screen, I key in orcl11gr2, and it throws the the following error:
    Validation Error
    Examine and correct the following errors, then retry the operation:
    Service Name - Specify a valid service name.
    I wonder what is the extra validation that EM is checking. I assume it's checking the number of characters to be 8 characters or less.
    Also, because of this extra validation that is in EM, all tnsnames.ora entry that have service name = orcl11gr2, I will not be able to use EM to modify them, as I will get the same above error.
    But why does Oracle implements this extra validation, when the same validation is not implemented on other Oracle tools? For instance:
    1. dbca allows me to create a database with instance_name greater than 8 characters, and the outcome of initialization parameters will be as follow:
    db_name=orcl11gr -- truncated to 8 characters
    instance_name=orcl11gr2
    db_unique_name=orcl11gr2
    service_names=orcl11gr2
    2. Oracle Net Manager supports service name of orcl11gr2. The created Net Service Name, I have no problem connecting to the database.
    3. Listener support orcl11gr2 service name
    I'm using Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64), running on Windows 7.

    Hi, I finally solved this problem, the JDNI entry value is not configured properly for the session bean that's built for the service end point.
    Changed JNDI value, and use that value in the service locator to look up the session bean home, it worked.

    Is it possible to somehow prevent the database from registering the service name ORCL with the listener?
    If you're wondering why I'm asking that, it's because this database is a duplicated production database (on a different host), and I'd like to prevent the possibility of mistakenly connecting to the production DB. I'm aware it would be better if I change the database's SID altogether, but currently that's not possible.

    Jut a question at the beginning. Doesn't the SID_LIST_listener_name parameter define which databases the listener listens to (and not the single services the database offers)? As I understand, I can prevent automatic registration of a database into the listener, but not selectively allow only some services the database offers? Maybe I'm completely wrong, so please correct me if it's so :-)

    First of all, If you are using PO8i and D2k as a front end
    on single machine,no need of specifying Connect String. You can
    connect using scott,tiger. If still it is giving problem,try
    this one.
    Open TNSNAMES.ORA file from folder NET80/Admin in your PC
    using NOTEPAD. Look there entry for myora. If it is there,Check
    SID,IPAddress or remove word "World" from there. See E.g

  • Resolve database service name using in SQL

    Hi all!
    My question is:
    Is it possible to resolve database service name (e.g. TNS) from SQL only (without logging into the server with oracle user and execute tnsping)?
    I'll give you a bit background about my question:
    In DataGuard, if you query v$archive_dest, you can see the SERVICE NAME of the standby database in the STANDBY records. I would like to know what is the real server name and database instance of the standby database.
    I don't want to login to the primary server with oracle user (let's say that I can not - it's a program really, not me...).
    Let's also say that the only user I have is a read-only user to the database (with grants to all tables and views, but cannot execute privileged DBMS sys packages).
    Running "SQL> host tnsping NAME" doesn't do the job, since this is only for SQL plus.
    Doe's anyone have any idea? maybe v$ view that contains the TNS resolution (tried to find, no success)? maybe a tnsping alike command/function?

It is also handling the actual transport of the files. That name resolution is not passed back to the database.

    Our server has 2 databases (8i) on AIX 4.3.3.
    I created a new one (newdb) for trainning. I modified listener.ora at /etc and $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin folders. Also modified tnsnames.ora on server side. On my workstation, there are 2 Oracle home. One is orawin95 (Oracle 8 client) and the other one is ora8i.
    The problem is I can connect to newdb using sql*plus and DBA studio under ora8i. But I cannot connect to newdb using sql*plus under orawin95. I modified tnsnames.ora under both folders.
    Is there anythong need to be modified on the server?

    Hello Wang, I am in the same boat. I have installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition (C:\Oracle\Ora81) on my computer running Win 98. I have installed the Developer 2000 (C:\Orawin95) from CD tools Pack V6.
    When I invoke SQL*Plus from Database installation it works but when I invoke SQL*Plus from Tools installation it says that the TNS cannot resolve the service name. etc.
    If anyone had this problem and fixed it please respond. Thanks

    The problem is I can connect to newdb using sql*plus and DBA studio under ora8i. But I cannot connect to newdb using sql*plus under orawin95. I modified tnsnames.ora under both folders.
    Is there anythong need to be modified on the server?

  • MSDAORA,IIS,ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

    Hi All,
    I have a Web Service that coded in VS2008, using ORACLE DB(9i).
    At a time the application working fine and I can access and do everything with database.
    Some other time database server is down for scheduled maintenance. If I try to run the application at this point of time it will raise err "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name".
    When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while.Then same problem occurs again.
    My connection string is connectionString="provider=MSDAORA.1;data source=***;user id=***;password=***;"
    is there any solution?
    i tried that;
    If theire is multiple copies of OCIW32.dll you have to make sure that there is only one copy of OCIW32.dll which should be in /Bin folder of the oracle home folder.
    Add the IUSR_machine name account and the IWAM_machine name account to the Oracle home folder. Give both accounts full control.

    The issue doesnt make much sense on the surface at least. 12154 means the client couldnt figure out what you were referring to with your Data Source= entry. If the database was taken down, I'd expect an "oracle not available" or some other sort of error, as the client should have still be able to resolve the entry at least, even if the database wasnt up at the time.
    What do you mean by "When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while.Then same problem occurs again."? The same problem meaning you get 12154 when you take the database down? Or you get 12154 without a db restart?
    Are you using TNSNames.ora for client naming resolution, or something else (ldap, for example)?

  • Changed Service Name not being used

    Hi all,
    Here is the scenario, I am using ABAP proxy to send data to XI system, earlier the business system was called BUS_SYS in the SLD, later we changed it to JI0220 in accordance with the naming conventions.
    Subsequently the Business system and corresponding entries in the integration directory have also been updated.
    The problem that I am facing is, when I try to send the message to the XI system using the same proxies I had earlier the service name being used is BUS_SYS, it doesn’t get updated to JI0220. I have tried clearing of the SLD cache o the XI system, but this had no impact on the message being sent.
    Is there a step that I am missing in configuration and or implementation?

    i have checked teh cache on teh integration server and it is updated, the cache on the integration engine i.e. the place we are sending messages from is not gettign updated, i though did find a table named LCRT_CLNTCACHE, where i updated the business system name and subsiquently the messages started working.
    if there is some other method of updating the cache of the integration engine without chaging the table entry physically do let me know.
