Services stopped responding to requests after several updates

This week all services on a G5 dual 1.8Mhz tower stopped responding. Unfortunately, I cannot find a trigger event for this though perhaps it is related to recent updates.
The services that stopped responding include bonjour, ssh, remote desktop/management, web server, and any services residing on an Airport Express (printing, AirTunes). Even ICMP pings will not respond.
All outbound connectivity works properly and I can access all the services locally.
On the surface it looks like a firewall problem, but no changes were made there and even with the FW set to "Accept all incoming connections", nothing gets through.
Using tcpdump, I can see the remote computers trying to access the services, but there is no response.
Also, during bootup, print jobs that were stalled because the printer on the Airport Express couldn't be found actually print and for s short time the system responds to pings, then stops.
There are lots of errors in the console at startup including the "SHAuthorizationRight" error (see below):

Thanks in advance for any help.

It took a couple days to figure this out, but I have answered my own question.
The problem was a security policy installed by a Check Point VPN1 connection to a particular remote site. Their policy turned off all local access on my G5. After deleting the site from VPN1 all services became available.
This really is a CheckPoint problem because I could not find any way to change the security policy to "unrestricted".

  • Why does my iPad mini stop responding to wifi after a period of time?

Why does my iPad mini stop responding to wifi after a period of time?
For example, I can connect to wifi and use Safari and my iPad's interet capabilities with no problem. But if I then leave my iPad alone for an hour - when I go back to using it, it still shows as being connected to the wifi, but is unresponsive - i.e. web pages will not load etc. - I have to disconnect and reconnect to the wifi to make it responsive.
    In advance, thanks

    Try #5
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Coldfusion service stops responding

We have a BIG problem on our Coldfusion production server.
Today is stopped responding on requests. It has been more and
    more frequent lately.
    Server info:
    ColdFusion MX
    Version: 7,0,1,116466
    Edition: Standard
    Operating System: Windows 2003
    Java Version: 1.4.2_05
Usually we can’t find anything in the log files but
    today we did get this:
    Component Prog ID: 3[ODBC][Env 2fc1978]
    Method Name: IDispenserDriver::CreateResource
    Process Name: w3wp.exe
    Exception: C0000005
    Address: 0x7C8224B2
    Call Stack:
    + 0x7c8224b2
    + 0x40280006
    Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.1830,
faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address
    0x000224b2.
Any idea’s? Any one that would know how to
    debug/monitor this?
    Morten

That sounds like a problem with IIS, rather than ColdFusion.
In which log did you find this error - in the system event log?
One thing that might help, install the IIS Diagnostics
    Toolkit (iisdiag):
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9BFA49BC-376B-4A54-95AA-73C915670 6E7&displaylang=en
You can use the debugger to capture detailed crash dumps and
run analysis reports that can usually point you to the source of
    the problem.
Another thought, I've heard of people running into issues
with Windows 2003 server where the OS itself is at Service Pack 1
(or 2), and IIS was installed from an older binary (e.g...the
original Windows 2003 installation CD). That can sometimes create
strange IIS issues, as described here:
    http://www.coldfusionusers.com/blog/index.php/2006/05/18/recent-troubles-with-iis-60-coldf usion-mx7/
    Best of luck with it.

  • Why did my iPad 2 stop responding last night after an ad poped up from the FIFA 12 app?

After starting the FIFA app a pop up ad came up then my iPad stopped responding and froze. I tried double clicking the home button to froce close the app, that's when the iPad shut itself down and restarted on its own. Has this happened to anyone or what can I do to prevent this from happening again.

I do not know of any way a device can do anything when sleeping.
Unfortunately, I do not know of any log files (similar to ones on a computer).
I would check with your ISP or phone service provider to see what is going on (they should have log files).

  • Iphoto stopped responding during 9.5.1 update

I installed Mavericks last night, and started making required application updates today. After installing the iphoto 9.5.1 update, I opened it up, and there was a prompt about upgrading my library, or something to that affect. When I reached step 11 of 11 in the upgrade, at 39% complete, the application stopped responding, and my laptop is stuck in the middle of the upgrade (going on 3 hours.) I know that applications can gain glitches if you force quit them in the middle of an upgrade/update/download, but I'm at a loss what to do without the risk of glitching/messing up my photo library. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a backup copy of the library made before you began the upgrade?  If so then force quit out of iPhoto and launch it again.
If you have any problems with the library quit again and try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.
If all of this fails reatore the backup copy of the library and open it with iPhoto.

  • Magic trackpad stops responding on wakeup after upgrade to Mavericks

I have a 27" iMac purchased in July 2011.  I never had any issues with the trackpad before upgrading to Mavericks.  I upgraded a few months ago and started having sporadic issues with the trackpad.  When the iMac woke up, everything seemed fine at first.  About once or twice a week, after it had been working for about a minute (just enough time to start web browsing), the trackpad would suddenly stop responding.  It then progressed to being more consistent (every other day).  The cursor was still visible and the keyboard still worked.  The trackpad was still on but apparently not connected.  I thought it was the batteries, but new batteries didn't help.  I could get the trackpad to work again by using Spotlight to open the Bluetooth System Preferences.  The trackpad worked immediately when Bluetooth preferences were opened (nothing needed to be changed; it would just start working).  However, it would stop responding after about ten minutes.  It was interesting because even if I left the Bluetooth System Preferences open, it would still stop responding after about ten minutes.  I could use the keyboard to make the preferences window active and it would immediately work again.  It would then work again for a few minutes and then stop.  I found that removing the trackpad and re-connecting it would cause the trackpad to start working again more consistently.  It would only stop if the iMac went back to sleep for an extended period (overnight).
For anyone else with this problem, helpful keyboard shortcuts are cmd + spacebar to open Spotlight, type bluetooth, use the arrow keys to go to Bluetooth system preferences (hit enter), use the arrow keys to go down to the trackpad, press spacebar to unconnect, again to confirm, and then after the trackpad is automatically rediscovered, press spacebar again to pair it.
This went on for about a month, when I had what I suspect was an unrelated problem.  The trackpad started acting as if it was being held down (left click was always being pressed).  I took it into the Apple Store and they confirmed it was broken.  I was a little disappointed since it had basically expired about a week after my AppleCare expired, but luckily the folks at Apple took care of me.  (Thanks Apple!).  At that point I had a brand new trackpad.
The issue had gone back to happening every other week or so.  I thought it might be interference, but I've since physically moved apartments and all the objects around it. It's been a couple months now and it's back to happening every couple of days or so.  Since the trackpad is brand new, I have to think this is a software issue.  I've noticed the following consistently:
    1) It only stops responding if I've put it to sleep (I usually do so with a hot corner, but I don't have any reason to believe that's related) and haven't used the computer for more than 12 hours.
    2) It'll always work right when it wakes up.  It'll stop fairly consistently 1 - 2 minutes after waking up.
    3) Time Machine seems to be busy doing something when the trackpad stops (the little icon is spinning in a circle if I have a Finder window open).  Uncertain if it's always doing something or if it's coincidence that I've noticed it more recently.
    4) As mentioned above, opening the Bluetooth System Preferences will always get the trackpad to respond, but then it'll stop after a few minutes.  Unpairing and reestablishing the pairing will fix the issue for awhile (at the very least until the next time the iMac sleeps).
    5) I may be imagining this, but before upgrading to Mavericks, I think it used to show the message that the trackpad was connected when the iMac woke up.  I no longer see that message unless I remove the connection and setup the pairing again.
I've seen lots of people with various issues with Bluetooth connectivity and Mavericks.  I'm on 10.9.4.  No one seems to have exactly this issue.  If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Module 'asus-nb-wmi' stopped being auto-loaded after kernel update

Well, the module 'asus-nb-wmi' which takes care of some FN keys and keyboard backlight stopped being auto-loaded after the latest kernel udpate (3.9.3), so I had to add it to /etc/modules-load.d/ to get it working. This has happened before, between kernel updates and I had to re-install arch to fix it, but now I found that manually adding the module is a nice solution, but I want it to be loaded automatically or at least know why does this happen. Kernel modules, such as this one, should be loaded automatically right?
    Best regards.
Last edited by DanielRS (2013-07-04 19:54:48)

I think there is a valid question here;  Same thing happened to me.
Upon a default install of arch, the module was auto-loaded without the user touching any configuration files
at some point during kernel updates, the module is no longer auto-loaded
the user then has to find out what is happening and go add the module to the appropriate config file to force load on boot.
So the larger question is; without config files being taken into consideration, how does the kernel decide what modules to load?  f
I know it has something to do with the hardware that it detects, but am unaware if this is something within the RC or systemctl booting system, or if this is part of the kernel.
I'm going to dig around some more on the internet, as i'm sure the answer is out there somewhere.. but if someone that is on this forum happens to read and know the answer, it would be nice to know
    thanks

  • Power up stops at blue screen after software update

I have a rather old Power Book G4, but was working fine until I tried a software update. It had 5 updates. It required a restart so I restarted it, and the update began. At 22% complete it stopped and said to restart. It wouldn't complete the upgrade. So I restarted it. It now stops at the blue screen. It gets past the gray screen with the Apple logo, but stops. Any ideas before I take it in? Thanks.

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.

To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Bluetooth keyboard pairing repeated requests after mavericks update dec 20? ogitech MX5500 eventually connected but I keep getting repeated bluetooth pairing requests and it is driving me mad! Please Help! Anyone else suffering this?

This just started after Maverick update installed Dec 20.frustrated and annoyed that apple would release an update that makes apple users lifes such a misery . Anyone else suffering same problems. I can switch bluetooth off that  makes using multiple screens difficult which is why I bought this $ 2800 top spec Mac retina 15 inch pro in the first place. I'm using Logitech MX5500 keyboard. Logitech MX1000 mouse works fine
Any suggestions or solutions much appreciated and hopefully apple gets their act together..

I am having this same issue - where I work, we use bluetooth trackpads. If my boss tries to connect his wireless bluetooth keyboard to his computer, I get the request on my machine every single time. The "Bluetooth Troubleshooting" article does not address any part of blocking requests, bluetooth security settings, or anything related to this issue at all, really. I do not believe there is currently any fix or setting that CAN resolve either of our problems, but I'm hoping that posting this at least puts the issue out there for hopefully somebody who can address this issue to see.

  • Firefox stops responding to my actions several times an hour, how can I fix this?

It just always stop responding help!

I have the same problem, but no error message.  I cannot add anything to my iphone and get it to the PC.  If I add in outlook on the PC, it goes to the iphone and macair.
I also have duplicate contacts on my iphone, no where else.  If I delete one it deletes all through Icloud including my pc.  If I change something on the PC it only changes one of the contacts on the iphone.  Go figure.

  • Lock Code request after firmware update on E71

After I updated successful (message was displayed by software updater) my phone, it makes a restart.
And asked for the "Lock Code". I never used the lock code function and I never changed it before.
The default Lock Code "12345" mentioned within the documentation is not working.
Re-installation of the firmware is not working as I am unable to reinstall "PC Suite Support" due to the fact that I am not able to confirm the installation on my phone. I went to the Nokia shop and they told me they have to sent the cell phone in for repair and this can takes up to four weeks. This is totally unacceptable. Until today I was I fan of Nokia phones but this has changed dramatically.

    Hi
I also experienced the same problem. Phone was working perfectly prior to Firmware Update.
I had never used or changed the lock code. Initially I thought everything was fine because the
Firmware Update was reported to have been a success.
I then went through the process of selecting language (English) and setting date and time.
However, after doing all this I was then asked for a Lock Code.
I was a little bemused but tried the default '12345'. This did not work.
I tried all the other usual defaults; '0000', '1111', '1234' etc, still no joy.
After a little swearing I decided to ring the Nokia help line. After explaining the problem I was advised to go to my nearest Care Centre. I was also told that if the cause of my problem was as a result of the 'faulty' firmware update then they should do it free of charge.
Off to the Care Centre then (30 mile round trip)!!!! They rigged it up to their 'kit' and confirmed that
the Lock Code had not been changed and was still set to '12345'. They could not access the phone
either. They now have my phone and are going to try and sort it and if they cannot sort it will be
sending off to Nokia. This should then be sorted under warranty (although I would argue the cause
of the problem is a glitch in the Firmware Update and not a fault with the phone).
Let's hope that when I get the phone back it will all be hunky dory!!!
It's also worth noting that even though I could not access the phone directly by using its own keys
I could use all the functions when rigged up to my computer through Nokia PC Suite. I could access
all contacts, messages, calendar etc. I was also able to send and receive SMS. If the phone was
locked then surely I shouldn't have been able to do this????
Hope the above sheds some light on your problem. Just be sure that you are not fobbed off by
either the help line or the 'techies' in the shop. At the end of the day if you have not messed about
with the lock code before the firmware update you should be able to get it sorted free of charge if
the phone is still under warranty. GOOD LUCK!!!!

  • Oracle 10g XE services stop responding after idle for a few hours.

    Hello,
We have been developing a small application using PSP PL/SQL and it works great except that when we leave the oracle server idle for about 2 hours and more (no request from the web app and no connections from Oracle SQL Developer), the services do not respond.
    The environment is:
    - Windows Small Business Server 2003
    - 2.5GB Ram
    - Plenty HDD Space
    - 1 Xeon Processor 2.8 GHz
Another symptom that I noticed also is that then the services are not responding, I check the task manager, and the "Oracle.exe" service uses 257k of memory, where when the server is active uses 100,000k or more. I'm not sure at what level the problem is, or if there are limitation when XE is installed in Windows Server 2003, but I need to know if it can be fixed before we continue developing.
To fix the problem, all I have to do is stop the database using the shortcut, and starting it again.
Is the problem at the oracle server level? or is windows managing memory for the services inappropriately?
    Thanks in advance.

I checked it now and noticed this:
