Servlet caches when it shouldn't

My Applet is sending my servlet a filename, the servlet the opens the file and send some info back to my applet. Now the problem comes when I want to open another file, the Servlet keeps on opening the first file I opened! The only way I get it to open the right file is by shutting down and restarting tomcat. How can I get around this? If tried putting this code in my applet after I declared the url, but it does nothing:
URLConnection con = url.openConnection();
con.setUseCaches(false);

This is the code for my servlet:
import java.io.*;
import java.io.File;
import java.util.*;
import java.net.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;
import javax.servlet.*;
import java.util.Vector;
public class TestServlet extends HttpServlet {
     String file;
     String outputFile = "output.txt";
     PrintWriter out;
     Vector v = new Vector();
     String path;
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req,
          HttpServletResponse res)
          throws ServletException, IOException{
     res.setContentType ("text/plain");
     out = res.getWriter();
     path = getServletContext().getRealPath("WEB-INF/textfiles");
     file = req.getParameter("name");
     readfile();
     for(int i=0; i<v.size(); i++)
     out.print(v.elementAt(i));
out.close();
public void readfile(){
     try{
     FileReader in = new FileReader(path+ File.separator + file);
          int c;
          while ((c = in.read()) != -1){
          char car = (char)c;
          System.out.println(car);
          Character obj = new Character(car);
          v.addElement(obj);
     }//while
     in.close();
     //outfile.close();
     }catch(IOException except){
     }//end catch
}//readfile
And this is how I call it in the applet:
String name = outField.getText();
try {
String host = getCodeBase().getHost();
URL url =
new URL("http://" + host + ":8080/servlet/TestServlet?name=" + name);
URLConnection con = url.openConnection();
con.setUseCaches(false);
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(
               new InputStreamReader(url.openStream()));
Anybody know what am I doing wrong?

  • Servlet caching ????

    I input a name to a servlet and try to print out something with that name.Say , for ex. I enter "Bryan" and the output wud be "Bryan belongs to section C"
    when 2 or more users enter names from different machines using the same servlet at the same time..sometimes it happens that they dont get the result with what they gave in, instead one gets output with the name another enterted.
    To make it more clear..
    Suppose C1 enters "Adam" as input to the servlet to get an output "Adam belongs to Section C "
    C2 enters "Lisa" as input to the servlet to get an output "Lisa belongs to Section C "
    C3 enters "Ted" as input to the servlet to get an output "Ted belongs to Section C "
    What happens sometimes is that when C1, C2,C3 enter their value at the same time, C2 and C3 get "Adam belongs to Section C " instead of "Lisa belongs to Section C " and "Ted belongs to Section C "
    When can such a thing happen?? Does servlet cache in the server??
    How come the value gets passed on to the other requests as well..
    Any help is appreciated..

    Are you using class level or object level variables in your Servlet class to store the user entered values? (Use only local variables unless you really know what you are doing).
    Are you using ServletContext attributes?
    As far as I know, except for these two scenarios, there is no other way that requests will share values.

  • Servlet caching in oc4j/orion

    I'm making changes to my servlet yet they do not seem to be getting picked up, even when I restart orion. I have my classes, jsp etc in a war file under applications. Is there a servlet caching issue here and if so how do i solve it. I noticed an earlier posting about classes needing to be in a jar file to get reloaded, is something similar required for servlets?
    Neil W.

    Neil,
    If you are in the development stage of your application probably you will not like to go thru the hastle of building the WAR each time your servlet or JSP is changed. Please look at the following link to how to deploy apps with Exploded Directory Format http://otn.oracle.com/docs/tech/java/oc4j/htdocs/getstart.htm#1027810. In this case each time your apps is changed you just change the timestamp on web.xml by either UNIX touch command or some other mechanism and OC4J will redeploy your new apps.

  • Standard Servlet caching mechanism

    Gurus,
    Is there any standards on caching servlet reponse. Most of the application servers provide their own mechanism to cache servlet response.
    I am looking for application server netural standards for caching servlet resposne. If there is no standards for caching available in any of the servlet > 2 releases, probably i would send an email to servlet specification guys to think on something like this.
    Its lot of pain when you write code in some server and deploy it on some other server where the servlet caching response caching is suported.
    Any help in this will be appreciated

    Here is more explanation...
    Suppose for an example, a servlet that accepts parameter(s) and queries the database and displays a html text, may be around 100 records. ok?
    Next time when you make the same request with same set of parameters, the servlet excecutes the db query again and display the same result when it was intially called.
    Now my question, is there standard mechanism to cache the servlet reponse at server side and when the request is made with same set of parameters, it would be served from the cache instead of making db call.
    In addition to that, it should work under all the application server when you deploy
    Let me know if this clear enough, or i can add more stuff in here.

    HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 goes to sleep, but often wakes up when it shouldn't.  This happens over and over.  It used to sleep until I sent something to be printed. I now shut the printer down, but that takes a long time to start it up.

     When you finally get around to looking at my post, never mind.
    I reset the factory defaults on the printer and reauthorized my WiFi network.
    Now it is working.

  • Podcasts are syncing when they shouldn't be

    My iPod finally ran out of space so I wanted to remove some of the video podcasts from it. I have my podcast syncing set to sync the selected podcasts so I thought I could just uncheck the ones I didn't want to keep on my iPod and sync to remove them. That didn't work so I put my iPod in manual sync mode and removed them. I turned off the manual sync option and told it to sync again and it's copying all my podcasts (even the ones that aren't checked on the podcast tab). How do I make it stop so I can free up some space?

    Ok, I can confirm that the problem doesn't affect music playlists.
    I've also noticed that the files that get copied when they shouldn't take up more space than the ones that are supposed to be there. I noticed this by syncing, checking a podcast that was previously unchecked, then resyncing. It wasn't a lot of space, only around 10-25 mb.
    I've also found a workaround to get the files off my iPod. I have the "Sync only checked songs and videos" option checked on the summary tab for my iPod in iTunes. I can uncheck each individual podcast that I don't want to be on my iPod, then resync and they are removed. So I guess the problem is only present on the Podcasts (possibly movies and tv shows too) tab of the iPod screen in iTunes.
    Is there somewhere else I should go to submit a bug report?

  • AfterValueChange event trigged when it shouldn'tbe...

    Hi there,
    I'm hoping that someone out there has experienced the following (and
    knows why it is happening. ) :-)
    I have a couple of windows on which the AfterValueChange event is
    triggered on a field upon hitting the delete key.
    We all know that this should only happen upon leaving the field, ie. the
    field loosing focus. The problem is that I'm trying to recreate this in
    a simple test class, but now it won't happen. I still have the original
    windows on which it is happening, but I would like to construct
    something small and simple to send to Forte.
    Any ideas as to why this could be happening?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the replies so far, but this is not the problem. I know about
    the "Validate on keystroke" option and it is definitely swithed off.
    I was rather thinking along the lines of this being be a 'funny' in
    Forte. Has anyone seen this before? Here is more information:
    1) The windows that it is happening on all have parent windows.
    2) The fields with this problem are all part of a mapped gridfield, ie.
    it has a type.
    However, I have constructed a test class with these characteristics, but
    it is no good. There must be something else that could cause this. Any
    ideas?

    Hi Jaco,
    Check if the option "Validate on keystroke" is set
    to true on the widget that posts the AfterValueChange.
    If so, than that's the reason. Turn it off and your
    problem will go away.

  • Entries removed from cache when calling get()

    Hi. Have a problem where entries seems to be removed from the cache when calling get(). The problem occurs after the cluster has been idle (no calls to get or put) for a while. When I then call get for an entry that I know should be in the cache i can see, via an listener, that an entry is removed from the cache and the get call returns null.
    My cache is wrapped in a class that does not expose any remove methods so I know that there is no calls to remove. Below is a log showing the debug print from when the removal is done and a thread dump on the thread that does the remove.
    Attached you will find both a cache configuration and the code that produces the log below. Note that there is some code missing from the example but the missing code is only interfaces or datawrappers.
    Hopefully someone can help me solve my problem.
    Best Regards

    Hi Marcus,
    Your configs clearly show that you cannot have eviction.
    From what you have described, you are almost certainly seeing eviction.
    I conclude that the config that is being used is not the config that you intend to get used. To verify this, you can look at the logs to see what config is getting used. I believe you will see what configuration is being used when that config file is loaded. For example, in version 3.2:
    2006-11-22 19:32:13.068 Tangosol Coherence DGE 3.2/367 <Info> (thread=main,
    member=1): Loaded cache configuration from resource
    "jar:file:/C:/java/opt/coherence320b367/tangosol/lib/coherence.jar!/coherence-cache-config.xml"
    Having seen this same problem before (encountering it myself and seeing others encounter it), we added that logging to be clear which config file was being used. If you use the command line tool, it will additionally show you the cache config for the cache that is being accessed when you type the "cache xxx" command (xxx being the name of the cache).
    Peace,
    Cameron.

  • [Repost] Kodo do not use cache when resolving references to objects?

    Abe,
    I noticed that if object A references object B and we read multiple A
    object which reference the same B object, this B object will be re-read
    from database for every fetched A object. If I read 100 A-object
    referencing the same B it will do 100 selects on the same B. I use
    optimistic transactions with retain values = true
    Could you please comment on it
    Thank you very much

    Was there something else about this you'd like me to comment on?_
    No Abe that is it. I was not sure I am not doing something wrong. I
    seemed very strange to me that internal reference resolution completely
    ignore cache.
    I think it is quite important - you want believe how much it slows down
    object graph retrieval. It does not seem to be hard to implement. :-)_
    I guess when resolving a reference you would have to use the same
    validate _true/false settings as for retrieving  object?

    same B instance is returned from each relation, so it is not a bug, but
    obviously it is something we could be doing a little more intelligently.
    Thanks for pointing it out!

  • AltKey Uniqueness Rule firing when it shouldn't

    Hello,
    I am using JDev 11.1.1.4.0.
    I have a 'Name' field that has Altkey for uniqueness rule. It works fine. In fact, it works too well that the rule fires when it shouldn't.
    So I was looking for an example to execute the validation conditionally, for my case only when 'Save'.
    Any suggestion/comment appreciated.
    Thank you
    Bones Jones

    No reason in particular, when I created the class, FlashBuilder put it in there (I'm using Flash Pro CS5 + Flash Builder 4). I read that it calls it by default when the class is constructed, so having it in or out didn't really matter. I did comment it out with no luck, but I ended up shifting around the timeline quite a bit today and the problem has gone away. It seemed to only do it when it was in the first frame.
    Thanks for your help, I'm going to investigate it further when I have time just for reference, I'll post anything I find here.

  • Prevent servlet caching

    I am having problem with servlet caching. My Servlet keeps displaying
    previously cached image instead of an updated image. I tried out the
    following workarounds and was not successful.
    1. Set the following Response headers
    res.setDateHeader("Expires", 0);
    res.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate,
    post-
    check=0, pre-check=0");
    res.setHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
    2. Set HTML META TAG:
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="0">
    Has anyone experienced a similar issue and can you share your
    worarounds. I even tried setting DateHeader as follows but no luck.
    res.setDateHeader("expires", System.currentTimeMillis()).
    thanks in advace

    And is this servlet actually sending the image itself, or it is sending some HTML that contains a link to the image? If it's the latter, then no amount of saying not to cache the HTML will have any effect on whether browsers cache the linked image.
    Actually now that I read your post more carefully, I see that you are sending HTML which presumably has an <img> tag referring to the image. The browser will download that image as a separate transaction. But if you change the date on the image file to something later, the browser should stop caching it.

    select elemento.ciudad into asd from elemento where elemento.id_elem=x;instead the single query i wrote, we get the following:
    (1) works wonderfull, only gets the error when there are no matches for x.
    (2) throws the error i showed before.
    however when i do the following query in the worksheet and execute it:
    (3)
    select elemento.ciudad from elemento where elemento.id_elem=x;i get what i expected to get 1 row 1 column.(yes it has data)
    note: in (3) the only difference is that i remove the into clause, and x is the same number i used when i execute the procedure.
    --------------------the question------------------------
    why in the procedure, the query (2) fail to fetch the data, the same data wich the query(3) does not fail to fetch?
    i'm getting ORA-01403, when i shouldn't?
