I need to set the primary email address to a web site on Google, the high school email client.
Seems I have to put in a standard form of email address and can't put in a URL.
By primary, I mean I want to touch Email and have that site come up.

Why can't I read .pfd files when sent to me in email or web sites?

whenever I get a email or visit a web site I cannot read the attachment or the web site if it is a .pfd document.

I have this problem too with my Western Digital 1TB My Passport for Mac.
Downloaded Card Data Recovery - did not work. The software self terminated itself when the problematic WD is connected. Starts up fine when the WD is not connected by USB.
Then I downloaded Remo Recovery. Starts up fine, scans fine and appears to save the files but ALL the files 'saved' are unreadable.
Finally, downloaded Stellar Phoenix in a last ditch attempt to recover my precious video files. Starts fine, saves fine BUT it cannot save files above 200MB because the WD stops working every 10 minutes.So, did not solve my problem totally because I have so many files above 200MB.
And yes, I PAID for all the software above. And the first two software are reluctant to refund me my money until their development team can ascertain whether it's a software bug, over online web conference. And because of the time differences, I can never get online with them. So, all my money gone.
Until one day I opened Activity Monitor and noticed this 'fsck_hfs' starting up everytime I connected the problematic WD My Passport for Mac.
So, tried to Force Quit 'fsck_hfs' and VOILA!
A dialogue box popped up and says that the Passport for Mac cannot be repaired and that I can move and copy files from it but not save to it.
PHEW!!
At least I can access the files and save them to my Seagate 1TB although now I am having a problem opening FCP X project files rescued from the WD.

How to turn off email and web site links?

I'm making my own letterhead template for my massage business.
I want to turn off the automatic linking to my email address and web site which are both included on my letterhead. It's just annoying that every time I accidentally click on either of those I'm taken to my web site or my computer is trying to email me!
I only snail mail my letterhead and have no use for the linking. I can change the type format so it looks like the rest of the letterhead, but I can't turn off the linking.

There is an option under Preferences > Auto-Correction to "Automatically detect email and web addresses." You want that one unchecked. There is also a link inspector, second from the right, with options to enable hyperlinks or make all hyperlinks inactive. Seems contradictory to me & I've found that if a document already has some linked text, changing these preferences doesn't change the existing links. And, if you paste in something with a link the link will still be active.

PDF files email and web sites

What app do I need to upload a PDF file to a web site? Trying to upload my resume to a job search site. And how do I attach more then one PDF file an email at one time?

I've had problems for ages with this but I did notice that after I went through the reinstall with Apple yesterday I now have a couple of different options that are working.
Yesteday I uninstalled reader, restarted my computer and then reinstalled again. I didn't think it had worked for me but after some extra experimentation I have discovered a couple of things.

it is coming up with a toolbar (I suppose it's called) at the top of the PDF and it is allowing me to print and save to my desktop, open the pdf and print YEAH.
Also with another website the PDF is showing up differently. eg http://media.wix.com/ugd/99e891_6110f024d956431abb7b66dd24f19251.pdf
This shows up like it used to but the difference is that if you try to save as or print throught the safari options like I used too it doesn't work, BUT if you hover down the bottom of the PDF it brings up a bar type box (sorry I don't know the technical word for this) then you can print, save to desktop, documents etc and then print from there too.
YEAH! It looks like (I hope) that the problem is solved. You have to go about it in a couple of different ways depending on the website, but hey, I don't think that's so bad as long as I can actually print my PDF's. It's better that not being able to access any of them which is what's been happening for the last few months.

Hello. Basic Safari question: How can I Copy, then paste, web site content from Safari, into a document (ie. Powerpoint Presentation)? I am interested in copying / pasting so that the content in the document looks (formatted) identical to the content on the web site?

This one kills me as well - editing phone numbers in the keypad/dialer is a pretty basic function, I could never fathom why it didn't exist. We need to be able to place a cursor, and copy/paste part-numbers! I'm constantly trying to paste just an area code, or an extension, or insert the country code, and I should not need to create a new number in the contact directory to do it!
Currently I do the copy/paste editing in Notes, and then paste the corrected number into the dialer - pointless and inefficient, and contrary to the Apple philosophy of making the user experience easy and seamless...

Setting up multiple web sites (virtual hosting).

I am considering OS X Server for a personal project and would like some advice to help me decided what route to take.
My computer will soon be turned into a server hosting my web sites and some other services at my home office. I am thinking about OS X Server as I have done some research and found OS X to require quite a bit of work so that it can do virtual hosting.
How simple is it to configure virtual hosting in OS X Server ? I am considering the latest Leopard version in case it matters. I am not experienced and wish to employ an application that will simplify this process.
Any help will be very appreciated.

You could create local PAC file <http://findproxyforurl.com/pac_file_examples.html> where you can return multiple PROXY servers. You would create text file with your PAC script in it. Then specify System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxy -> Automatic Proxy Configuration, and click "Choose File".
If you choose to take BDAqua's advice and create multiple Network Locations, you can then use either
/usr/sbin/networksetup -switchtolocation "MyCompanysProxy1"
/usr/sbin/networksetup -switchtolocation "MyCompanysProxy2"
/usr/sbin/networksetup -switchtolocation "MyCompanysProxy3"
or
/usr/sbin/scselect "MyCompanysProxy1"
/usr/sbin/scselect "MyCompanysProxy2"
/usr/sbin/scselect "MyCompanysProxy3"
you can put them into a script of your choosing. Shell script, or Automator Run Shell Scirpt, or Applescirpt do shell script (or Perl, Python, Ruby, etc...)

How to set the default web site for WGM users

Hi,
In Tiger server there was a place to input the URL of the default web page for all browsers when users logged into network home folders. This was really helpful and saved a bunch of bandwidth and class time. Is there any way to do this in Leopard server? If so, please point me in the right direction.

Antonio, Thanks! That seems to have worked for Safari. However, we like Firefox too, and I tried to set that up the same way, but was told "can't find a manifest for that app". I wonder if I can copy the Safari list then alter and rename it?

Should i use '08 to receate my photo web sites for clients?

I have 3 very important simple photo sites i have done for a client and they are up right now....
Now if i back up my original domains (how do I do that again?)- then install iLife 08 and recreate the 3 sites with iweb 08 from my photo albums in iphoto, should they be ok for pc users to view?
i really want to use iWeb '08 but im wary!

The file Domain.Sites is a package containing the complete iWeb 1.x website.
Make sure that you copy Domain.Sites to another location before installing iLife 08 (repeat this step if you have more than one domain). Also, copy iWeb to another location from the Applications folder. By performing these 2 steps, you will be able to re-install iWeb 1.1 if needed and have you site unchanged.
Once you install iLife 08. I would run Software Update to download the iPhoto fix. Then, BEFORE launching iWeb, I would double click the Domain.Sites file in User/Library/Application Support/iWeb. You will see a progress bar that will complete. Your indication that it is done will be that the filename will be renamed to Domain.Sites2. This will more likely result in success than launching iWeb.

How do I set up a root directory for a web site

So this is probably a naive newbie question.
I have been creating websites driven by php/mysql on my mac for years using the previous the web preference pane to run Apache and since that went away using XAMPP to provide Apache/php/mysql functionality on localhost.
I decided to download OSX server and try to use that. Figured might as well go native MAC.
I am baffled.
The manual says to set up a web site in Server by working through the Websites Services interface. I did that and pointed the setup at the directory where I have all of my web site files. I now have no idea how to access that page from my local machine.
I have tried:
http://localhost/myURL
http://localhost/~username/Sites/[root file directory] -- where the files are stored
I also tried some typical localhost ip address
None access my site.
How do I access my site over my local netework?
I feel like just dumping server.app and stting things up through the terminal.

How familiar are you with the bash command line and with Apache, and how much do you want to learn about Apache and related topics? (If you're not already, then I'd encourage learning about this material, as this knowledge is very useful for maintaining and updating sites, and knowledge of correctly securing files and directories is critical to building and maintaining secure web sites — all of managing and running and updating a web server builds on these foundations. There are various good books and web sites on Apache, and the Apache web site has various materials available, if you don't already have something.)
The localhost host name and the 127.0.0.1 IPv4 address are both synonyms for the "me" host. It's the name and the address that always gets you to the current host.
With http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1 specification, what you enter at the URL address bar is relative to the root directory specified for the default web server, and will default to the index.html or index.php page or whatever the default web site is configured to use. With OS X Server, this root directory is configured via Server.app. To use Server.app, launch it, connect to the server, select Websites from the left navigation, and you (by default) will see a default site and a secure site. Select the default site. Select the edit button below the site to edit (and to view) the configuration.
With the details of the default site visible, you will see the path to the default web directory. This path to the default web directory is where the files for the default web sever location reside.
The default path to the default web site is /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default
If you place foo.html in that directory (or whatever the defailt web site is using), you can view it via your web browser and the URLs:

http://localhost/foo.html
To get to the default web site using the GUI, launch Finder and select Go To Folder, and enter that string into the box. You will now get a GUI view of that folder. (I'd strongly recommend using the command line here, and not the GUI. To get to the directory from the command line and then list the files present, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities folder and issue the following commands:
cd /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default
ls
If you want to test something in the browser, you can use the file:///path-to-file-to-test mechanism. Most web browsers will allow you to render local files directly using file and three slashes.
You will need to ensure the executable files (scripts) are marked as executable to OS X, using a Terminal.app command such as the following:
chmod o+x path-to-file
Enabling ~/user per-user sites involves directly editing the configuration file, as Apple has disabled that by default.
There's an Apache tutorial with an overview of what's involved with enabling per-user directories here, and there's what's been listed in my earlier replies and links. With OS X Server Mavericks, the default configuration file for Apache is located in the Library folder, and can be viewed with the following Terminal.app command:
cat /library/server/web/config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf
This file is the OS X Server equivalent of the oft-cited httpd.conf file you'll see listed in various documentation.
If you want to enable the per-user directories or tweak other Apache settings, then shut down Apache from Server.app or from the command line, and then edit the configuration file with nano or some other command-line editor using a command similar to this:
sudo nano /library/server/web/config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf
you'll end up finding and uncommenting (removing the #) from the following two lines:
#LoadModule apple_userdir_module ${SERVER_INSTALL_PATH_PREFIX}/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_userdir_apple.so
#Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-userdir.conf
If you have specific questions about this, then I and others here can answer those. If you don't understand something, then asking a question about that can help you learn, and can help me understand what it is that I'm posting in my replies here that's confusing you. There are also various resources available for learning Apache, and I'd encourage spending a little time with those if you've not already done so or feeling at all unsure about how that tool works; I end up re-re-reviewing the Apache docs fairly regularly.

I create and set up multiple web site for companies. they are hosted on 3rd party sites but i want to control them in iWeb. How can I do that without it replacing the first site i did on iweb

iweb 09 doesn't actually require you to split domain files, but it is generally recommended and there are a couple ways to do so.....your preference is to start new each time. Would you, in my case, start a new one for each of my already created sites and then copy the pages into the appropriate site domain file. (there are only 3-4 pages/site) and then delete the original mess? and where do I find this original? I think I saw somewhere where it sits....will go look for that article.
mobileme does not support cname more than once. So, I have one site sitting at dreamhost. No problem. I have another public site I will have to host on mobile me so I'll direct cname here. And then the third site I'll be hosting elsewhere so the cname issue will not matter as things stand. However, any future public sites will need to be hosted elsewhere if I want them to have personal domain names not masked/forwarded, etc. But, if I make a family type site that I don't mind having all that me.com/gobbledygook address to hand off to the grandparents I could do that.
And then I am grateful for your step by step and specific recommendations for the google/optimizing part. I have seen all that stuff but have had trouble figuring what comes first, next, etc. And what services are best to use.
I have pictures scattered on my sites (not the photo templates) do I need to use yummy ftp to somehow manage these on the host site? This is not a piece I really understand. Do they not transfer with my iweb design?
And one site has two short video clips. You don't use quicktime. Can you point me to the resource to do this another way?

Not able to activate "email us" tab on a web site that previously did work, hosting co says it is not them, and safari works fine-- help!

Mac mini, will not open FF when i select "e mail us" on a web site tab.
This site has always worked before I updated to latest FFversion.
The hosting co checked the links and they are all ok. The email us function is performing with Safari.
I repaired permissions on the mac, but no help with this problem.

OK, I realize now that I need to upload to the web site the version of the PDF with the word "_distributed" appended to the file name, not the original PDF file. When I do that, it now gives info at the top about how to submit the form.
So my only question, I think, is what kind of submit button to place on the form itself.
I see there is another kind of button I can place on the page, just a plain "Button". Within its Object Palette, I see a setting called "Control Type", with choices of "Regular", "Execute", and "Submit".
If I choose "Submit", it asks "Submit to URL...", so that isn't what I want. "Execute" also asks for some info that I don't have. So do I just choose "Regular" for this button? If a user clicks that, does the data get submitted to adobe.com and the responses file?

My web site has a link which automatically configures an email. Doesn't work in Firefox 5.0 but OK in IE 8, Opera and Netscape. v

My web site is generated by Second Site , author John Cardinal, and contains email links which when selected automatically createsan email which all you need to do is fill in the body and send it. This has worked in the past in Firefox and does work now using IE 8, Opera, and Netscape browsers but does not work when using my Firefox browser neither locally on my computer or in my Internet website. Firefox is my browser of choice. This has worked in the past using Firefox.
My web site is www.schulteis.com/omnibus/. On the presentation page, on the bottom, where it identifies Genealogist: Site Administrator. Select it and it may work for you. John Cardinal tested it on his local machine and it worked for him. His response to me was,
"It's very likely that this is some sort of browser configuration error, and it's probably related to using a web-based email client, In
Firefox, look under Options > Applications and see how the "Mailto" Content type is configured. It should probably say "Use Yahoo Mail" [it does]. I have never configured a browser to use a web-base email client, so I can't help more than that.
Since this works fine on my computer and on my Internet site when using browsers IE 8, Opera, and Netscape but not Firefox, and I didn't do anything special for any browser to cause it to work, don't know what I could have done wrong for Firefox.
I am using Yahoo mail.

I'm also running FF 36.0.4 on a Win 7 machine. Here is what I see when I "open" the map (from the server - not inside DW):
The map area stays white with no image even after several minutes. The cursor does change to a hand when over the area where the map should be and if I click and drag there the cursor switches to the closed hand - so it's acting like the map is there and can be moved - but just no map shows up.
I'll run it though the validator. Thanks!

Each time I click an email link on any web site, however, it just opens up a blank page instead of one of my email programs.

I'm not clear on where you are seeing that text. When I view Google's cached page from the page found in this search

It doesn't match yours exactly. There is an iframe with a Google map in it in the "Hosting Analysis" section, which in your pasted page seems to be the "Site Server" section.
Which Google site did you search?
