Setting Absolute and Relative Cell References

OK - new to Numbers, but am an advanced spreadsheet user.
I am trying to do a formula where I sum the product of numbers from two other tables. In one I take a row vector and in the other a column vector. Since I am replicating this sum of products across a table, both across and down, I need to set the absolute column in one (the row vector) and absolute row in the other (the column vector).
In Excel, it was easy - use command-T to cycle through the options until I got the $ to show up where I needed it.
In Numbers, I really like the drop down menu, and in reading the manual, I should be able to achieve the same using command-K. Right?
OK - here is my issue and why I need help.
When I select the first cell of my column vector, the drop down menu gives me access to all four options, but I can only select two that will stick (the others can be selected, but they revert back to the original). The two are "relative" - the default one; and "absolute column". I cannot pick the other options. When I use command-K, it also cycles through only those two options.
Am I doing something wrong, missing a setting or not catching a reference in the manual?
Or do I need to enter things manually by typing in cell references?
Hmmm - this is either a bug or something simple that I just cannot see the solution to...
Thanks,
Andrew

Sorry - had to figure out how to put images into this forum (still trying to see how they get displayed...)
Here is what I am doing:
Multiplying this (cell by cell)
Image: !http://public.me.com/andrewvignuzzi/Screen1.jpg!
by this:
Image: !http://public.me.com/andrewvignuzzi/Screen2.jpg!
to get this:
Image: !http://public.me.com/andrewvignuzzi/Screen3.jpg!
So, for each row vector and column vector I get one result in a cell in the third table.
(In this case, the answer is: 30,000,0000.09470*0.1099+00.3557... = 2,841,265; if you take the next row vector (one line down) and multiply it by the same column vector, you would get the 4,047,087 result in the last table, and so on..)
My problem was that when I used the title "Series E" instead of "E Series" in the Column Vector table and I tried to set it to "absolute row" - it would not work. When I changed it to "E Series" it did. Why? While I use "Series E" as a title elsewhere, I would assume that Numbers has an internal reference that includes the table name as part of the identifier so that there is no conflict.
Anyway - I seem to have solved it, but not in a way that makes sense to me and I sure would like to know what, if anything, I am doing wrong.
Thanks!
Andrew

  • How do I make the column portion of a relative cell reference change based on a separate cell

    I have a relative cell reference K8  in a formula (k8/c8) and I want to obtain the column portion (K) of this relative cell reference from another cell at the top of the column this formula is in. This will make it very easy for me to change many formulas
    all at once simply by changing the contents of the header cell to reflect the column that I want to reference in the original formula. For instance the other cell may contain the letter M which would then change all of the formulas to m8/c8.
    I know I can change on cell and copy the formula to the other cells but then I have to do a copy and format paste to get all of my unique formatting back. The original formula frequently change with respect to the columns being measured.
    Thank you...even if I can't get there from here.

    Let's say that cell A1 contains the letter K, and that your formula is in a cell in row 8. You can change the formula to
    =INDIRECT($A$1 & ROW()) / INDIRECT("C" & ROW())
    This formula can be filled down (or up).

  • Total beginner question about relative cell references

    It seems like this ought to be easy, but I cannot get it right.
    I have 2 columns in a table.
    The first contains dollar amounts in each row.
    I would like the second column to sum the dollar amounts up to that row, and I'm trying to construct a formula.
    e.g:
    1 1
    3 4
    2 6
    7 13
    I cannot figure out how to refer to the current cell as an absolute but the others as an relative range.
    Any help gratefully received. (Why is there no function for "this cell"??)

    Hello
    It seems that you don't know the usage of the search function.
    Using it with the keyword "absolute" upon the Numbers User guide (PDF) brings to page 91 where one may read:
    +To paste a copy of a formula in a different cell and use the same cell references in both+
    +formulas, place a dollar sign ($) in front of column and row identifiers (=$A$1). This+
    +technique creates what’s called an absolute cell reference.+
    +For example, if the formula =A1 appears in cell D1 and you want to paste a copy of the+
    +formula in cell E1, change the formula to =$A$1, select D1, copy it, and paste the copy+
    +into E1. The formula $A$1 is copied into cell E1. If you didn’t change the formula to use+
    +an absolute cell reference the formula in E1 would be =B1.+

  • Xcelsius and relative cell in Excel from another document

    Hi, gurus.
    I have one question about Xcelsius opportunities. Can I use relative cells in Excel document, which as links to cell in another excel document. For example I have two Excel document. At first I use relative cell like this "='\job\[test_1.xlsx]List1'!$C$6",  after them I imported file with  this link to Xcelsius and I can see value from another document, when I work with Xcelsius only. When I view my result or exported in swf - I see that this value become 0, like empty cell.
    Can I use relative cells in Xcelsius or it is them  limitation?
    Thanks in advance, Ruslan.

    Thank you. I think so too. But I have no confirmation...
    And I think this limit like limit for work with Excel  Macros,  because If we  may use macros in another document, with work opportunity with relative cells we can get data with VBA scripts computing.

  • Difference between Absolute and Relative in scales

    Hi Experts,
    I am creating scales to calculate price in charge calculation for shippers and LSPs.
    Here I have a doubt on calculation type (Absolute, Relative) and the impact of these 2 types.
    So anyone who already gone through same way can tell about the impact of these 2 calculation types ( Absolute, Relative).
    Points will be given for replies.
    Thanks,
    Shakti

    Hi Shaktiprasad,
    Consider this example.
    Rate table
    For 0-100 KM - Fixed Charge $50
    101-200 KM $ 0.75 per KM
    201-300 KM $0.65 per KM
    300+ KM $0.5 per KM
    For the above rate table,
    Scales would be defined as follows.
    >= 0 - Absolute
    >= 100 - Relative
    >= 200 - Relative
    >=300 - Relative.
    When there is a fixed charge, we would use Absolute Calculation type for that Scale.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Michael.

  • Absolute and relative addressing for stylesheets: issue with IE6 and pages not in the root

    The following conditional comment gives me a problem when I arrange my site into folders (instead of all pages in one directory, or all in the root). The directories are built according to the site hierarchy.
    <!--[if lte IE6]>
    <link rel="stylesheet" media="all" type="text/css" href="../styles/dropdown_ie.css />
    <![endif]-->
    <!--[if IE]>
    My homepage is in the rootfolder, the dropdown_ie.css is in the folder "styles".
    I use the dropdown menu from Stu Nichols http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/dd_valid.html and this works as long as all pages are in the same folder (or, in my case, as long as they all are together with the homepage in the rootfolder). But when pages are in different folders, the dropdown_ie.css is not read anymore when using IE6. Other browsers are ok; for those I use:
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    @import url("../styles/flyout.css");
    @import url("../styles/dropdown.css");
    -->
    </style>
    What do you suggest I do to get the pages not in the root to read the dropdown_ie.css file when using IE6?
    And I have a feeling that the way I import the styles may not be right, but I am not sure.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Erik

    I solved this one by changing the relative addressing of my stylesheet location in absolute addressing. And I had to do this not only for the stylesheet, but for all addressing in the html related to this drop down menu:
    href="http://mysafety.be/styles/dropdown_ie.css"
    Changing the location of my files into subdirectories (and removing the spaces in the file names) also means that all my google indexing got screwed up; I submitted to google the whole list of addresses for removal from their cache. It will be another 4 weeks before everything is indexed correctly again, but I guess I better do this now before the site becomes fully operational.

  • Absolute and relative addressing (Reverse Proxy)

    Hi,
    we want to use a Reverse Proxy Envirement with EP 6 SP15.
    Are the standard links (e.g. navigation) from EP working with relative adressing?
    sample:
    Real address:
    http://www.myserver.com/myapp/mypage.jsp
    address on reverse proxy:
    http://www.otherserver.com/some/other/url/help/index.jsp
    Want to link to the origin page
    http://www.myserver.com/myapp/help/index.jsp (origin)
    over
    http://www.otherserver.com/some/other/url/help/index.jsp
    This means behind a reverse-proxy I have to address the page as follows:
    ../mypage.jsp
    Got anyone experience with this envirement - and is it working?

    Hi Thomas,
    I guess you will be using Apache as your Reverse Proxy?
    Configure your Apache something like this:
    My httpd.conf file looks like this:
    <VirtualHost IPAddress:80>
    Redirect / https://server.domain/
    </VirtualHost>
    I then have a ssl.conf file that looks like this:
    <VirtualHost IPAddress:443>
    ***Lots of other entries***
    ProxyPass /irj/ https://virtualhost/irj/
    ProxyPassReverse /irj/ https://virtualhost/irj/
    ProxyPass / https://virtualhost/
    ProxyPass /webdynpro/ https://virtualhost/webdynpro/
    </VirtualHost>
    Now obviously edit these ProxyPass, and ProxyPassReverse to suit your needs.
    This should help.

  • Is it possible to copy and paste a formula without changing the cell references?

    I am trying to paste a formula to a cell adjacent to where it currently is but when I do, the cell references in it change. I am trying to get exactly the same formula in the cell (without re-typing it).

    dedwards96 wrote:
    Just another quick question, is it possible to make a large number of cell references 'absolute'?
    Individual cell references in formulas may have four distinct states: relative, absolute column, absolute row, or absolute column and row. These are set using the popup menu on the reference itself. Click on the reference in the formula and choose one of the four states from the popup menu.
    Once set, you can fill the formula into the rest of a column or row using the Fill Handle (small circle at the lower right of a selected cell). Cell references in the new copies of the formula will remain absolute or adjst to their new position dependent on the setting for each reference. You can also copy and paste the cell (single click to select it, command-C to copy) with the same results.
    You can also copy/paste without changing the formula's cell references if you select the formula (Drag across the formula in the entry bar, copy, press tab to deselect and reconfirm the formula in the original cell) rather than the cell. Pasted into a new cell, the formula will appear as if you typed it in exactly as it was in the original cell—neither absolute references nor relative references will have changed.

  • Correctly combining an absolute and a relative URL

    Hello everyone!
    I've been messing around with combining absolute and relative URLS in java and have found the task to be a little more confusing than I originally thought. For example:
    /wallpapers/17i/Lotus_Exige_Mk_II,_2004.jpg
    http://wallpapers.diq.ru/ru/17__Peugeot_Moonster_Concept%2C_2001.html
    Firefox and other browsers see this as: http://wallpapers.diq.ru/wallpapers/17i/Lotus_Exige_Mk_II,_2004.jpg
    I don't understand why the /ru/ is taken out; and was wondering if there was already a class written in Java that combined urls, or if someone could explain to me why the end result is not http://wallpapers.diq.ru/ru/wallpapers/17i/Lotus_Exige_Mk_II,_2004.jpg
    Thanks

    The web page could have a <head> section that contains a [<base>|http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_base.asp].
    This specifies the base that will be used when resolving urls. It may not be the url of the page itself. For instance it could be that the "ru" bit collects together all the Russian langauge pages parallel to a "en" duplicate that has the same pages in English. Clearly both sets would want to access the same image resources so they have a <base> setting that points one level higher up.
    If this is the case and you want to get the url for the images you will have to parse the <head> of the web page and figure out what the <base>is.

  • How to "unchain" a cell reference?

    Hi!
    I try to do the following:
    The field A2 is linked to the upper table B2 to get the worth that is in it A3 to A4 are the same.
    The fields from C1 to E4 are linked to another table (not visible) by a query depending on the worth in B2.
    If i sort now the upper table by Rank the linked cells stay connected. But now A2 is connected to the upper B4. I understand that this is to maintain connections and make in many cases sense.
    In this case i need to "unchain" this. I simply want Numbers to look what is in the upper table in cell B2 regardless of sorting. I have tried with absolute and relative references but it doesn't work.
    In OOCalc this is possible across tables.
    Can anyone give my a hint in wich way to look?
    Thanks
    A. Wolff

    HI Alexander,
    I would suggest looking at OFFSET, ROW() and COLUMN().
    INDEX might also be useful.

  • Calc: How can I get absolute cell references in tables to work?

    Hi, I'm new to Star Office, and have run into a problem in my first spreadsheet.
    I have a data table in my spreadsheet.
    Some cells in the table need to make calculations based on other cells in the table.
    When I sort the table, however, the cell references are made to be incorrect. I expected that I could just use absolute references (e.g. $A$2) and when the table was sorted those references would be updated to refer to the new absolute location of that cell, e.g. $A$10). However, the absolute references are being left literally the same ($A$2) after the sort, making them reference a different row of data than intended. Relative references of course don't work in this situation either (I tried for thoroughness). (I thought Excel behaved the way I expected, but I just tried it in Excel 2007 and it is exhibiting the same behavior as StarOffice Calc.)
    I'm also concerned, although I haven't tried it yet, about what will happen when I reference cells in this table from another table using absolute references that the same problem will exist...
    So basically, I can't find a way to use absolute references to cells in a table that will persist correctly when the table is sorted. Any suggestions?
    Thanks. Asa

    I was able to work around the problem by creating an index column in the table with a unique number for each row of data and using vlookup() to reference the correct row. If there is a more elegant solution I'm still interested :)

    OK. Think I've got it now thanks to looking at the short keys and searching for "Full Screen".  The upper left key is "`" which looks like a grave - a slightly angled single quote. But when I look at the "Application" setting for Toggle full screen it is set to "'" - a "normal" single quote.  Sure enough, if I hit the normal single quote key the toggle works.
    I have not been anywhere near the hotkeys and can't imagine why anything would change it from a grave key to a single quote - especially as they look almost identical on the screen.  I'm guessing that Adobe changed this (maybe only for international users?)
    Anyway I now know how to toggle full screen, although it makes the "Premiere" keyboard with its big purple key for "Toggle full screen" redundant.  Does make me wonder what the shortcut key of "'" or CTRL + "'" gives that I'm presumably missing since it appears to have been remapped.

  • Absolute cell references with named cells?

    I know how to make a cell reference absolute with numbered cells, as in $A12.
    But what if the formula includes named cells, as in:
    =Table 1 :: 'Electric - Tank' Annual Fuel Cost+Table 1 :: 'Electric - Tank' annual maintenance
    I have tried the $ in various places, no luck so far. Please help...

    I found another similar thread, and the folks there helped me figured out what I was doing wrong.
    You need $ before EACH reference, both the cell's Row header AND column header. This made sense for the "old" cell label way, but the header names confused me at first. So:
    =Table 1 :: $Electric Tank $Annual Fuel Cost+Table 1 :: $Electric Tank $annual maintenance

  • Changes made to cell reference and cell formula in designer are not reflected in analyser?

    Dear Experts,
    I have made few changes to Bex Report in Query designer by creating cell reference for a cell and the same cell reference used by the formula created on the adjacent cell.
    I changes are working for 1 Report where as , the exact chanegs made in 2nd Report are not reflected in the Analyzer upon execution of Reports by giving exact inputs as fpr the previous report.
    Could you please help me resolve this issue ?

    Hi Loed,
    Please find  the screenshot of the query result below.
    The cells marked in green are where the cell reference has been created and the ones in yellow will have the formula pointing to the cell reference value.Ideally, the cell values in green and corresponding green cell should be identical(as seen in the 2nd screenshot).

  • Working with strings and cell references

    Hi all,
    I'm a fairly new user to the Mac world but I'm a power user of Excel trying to moving into the number environment. I'm currently experiencing some very inconsistent behaviour working with text strings in Numbers.
    I've used both '&' and CONCATENATE to try to concatenate strings and cell references and regualarly I'm getting the situation where the formula initially works and then when I save and reopen the file the cells containing the error return a syntax error.
    Upon examining the formula it appears that the cell references are converted from cell references to simple text so & (b2) & becomes &b2&.
    Any ideas what is causing this?

    I apoligise for this tardy response. Firstly, the issue occurred not when I first create the formula but when I save, close and reopen the document.
    Upon examining the formula, the cell reference is not being recognised and so instead of A2 referencing a cell it's simple A2 which causes an error.
    And this is happening in more than one cell (whole rows of cells actually as I've often created a formula and copied it down 10 or 200 rows).
    It is also happening on more than one file Badunit so I don't think it's a corrupt file.
    It's more than a little annoying though as it means every few days when I go back in to a file I need to spend a few minutes recreating the formulas.
    Any other suggestions?
    Oh and I've tried both methods of formula creation of typing the reference and clicking, but the result is the same.
