Setting an Oracle TNS Listener password
Im trying to enable a TNS Listener password on a database that I am monitoring through UNIX.
I have tried set current_listener, but lsnrctl only recognizes the listener on my machine.
Do I have to find the machine (remotely or not) where the listener is configured?
Each time I try, I get TNS-01101 error : could not service name
(I have already doen this successfully on my own machine, but I have to do the same for one of the databases in our firm)
Thanks.

This error means that the service name could not be resolved by name-lookup. Verify the listener.ora is properly configured, check the name and address defined either in listener.ora or in the tnsnames.ora file.

Where do I specify the tns listener password in CF MX. I have
added a password to the oracle TNS listener service. I need to get
MX to pass this password to the oracle server. Is there a place to
do this.
cfkHere is what I was given from our security group here at
USDOJ:
We are using 9i,
Server Product ColdFusion MX
Version 7,0,2,142559
Edition Enterprise
Serial Number
Operating System Windows 2003
OS Version 5.2
Description:
A Oracle TNS Listener has been detected on the host with
login security disabled (SECURITY=OFF).
Observation:
Oracle is an enterprise level database which is available on
many different platforms.
A configuration vulnerability exists within the Oracle TNS
Listener which allows remote unauthenticated access. The TNS
Listener accepts a clients request and establishes a TNS
(Transparent Network Substrate) data connection between the client
and the service. A TNS connection allows clients and servers to
communicate over a network via a common API, regardless of the
network protocol used on either end (TCP/IP, IPX, etc). A default
installation of the TNS listens on TCP port 1521.
Vulnerable Systems:
Oracle 8i
Oracle 9i
Recommendation:
It is recommended to only allow certain IP's or subnet ranges
to access the TNS listener. This can be done by adding a rule in
the firewall. We also recommend that you enable a password for the
TNS listener within Oracle -
Oracle RAC listener password protection
Dear Gurus,
We have 2 node RAC setup 11gR2 and as a part of hardening we wish to set password for listener.
Can some one please guide how can we set password on listener that registered with CRS. What would be the impact if any?
Also, there are two things with which should be noted.
1) We are not using SCAN feature.
2) Listener created should be owned by oracle user but all listener are getting started by Grid.

When firing command from GRID/ASM home, it says service not available where as status is available from oracle home. While stopping listener from oracle home it gives TNS-01190 error.

MARS - Oracle TNS listener errors
Anyone familiar with this:
[pnadmin]$ pndbusage
Program aborted due to: ORA-12541: TNS:no listener
MARS was fine before the holiday weekend. When I came back, I was looking at the summary page and the graph wasn't being drawn. I SSH'd to MARS and did the above.
While SSH'd to MARS (and my HTTPS session still open) I did a reboot and I still get the same error. Also, now when I HTTPS to MARS I get a login page, but the url is: https://10.6.184.116/logout.jsp
The username/password fields and login button are in the upper left corner of the browser window, not in the middle like normal.
So, now I have two problems. The first being my TNS listener error and the second being that I can't log in. It wants me to log out first...ugh.
Thanks,
BobThis sounds like a known issue and if memory serves a developer will need to login and do something, so you'll need to open a TAC case.

Oracle 8 tns-listener security
Hi list,
premise that an upgrade to a newer Oracle version is recommended... I noticed setting a tns-listener password in Oracle 8.1.7* ("SECURITY=ON"), the SIDs are anyway enumerable (via "Command=status").
According to you, is firewall filtering the only possible solution?
As for "Oracle8 tns security" I did not find information on google. For Oracle 9 is different.
Thanks in advance,

Oracle 8i TNS Listener crashes
After a fresh install of Oracle 8i on a NT4 Server SP5, when I
got to to test the net names server the Oracle TNS Listener
crashes. Anyone experience similar problems? Is there a
solution? Is there a place on OTN where bugs can be reported
and solutions provided?
I will certainly not use Oracle 8i if there are errors such as
these.
nullThanks for the reply. I figured that since nobody else has said
something similar in these threads that it must be something I
was doing wrong. I notice that SP5 is not in MS Technet packs
sent out monthly, it has been available for download for 3
months or so now, obviously something is wrong with it.
Thanks for the tip.

Hi all,
Our E-Business Suite support is fully outsourced. We have 3 Administrators at the outsourced company who are the ONLY ones with root access,ORACLE_HOME owners and these 3 are the only ones in the DBA group. Because of this limited number admins (the 3 of them) they claim they dont need a TNS Listener password, tns listener admin restrictions switched on or tns listener logging enabled. Does this sound reasonable. If a password is not set on the listener, anyone who knows hostname and port number has full control over the listener. Hence, the Listener files can be compromised or corrupted or even a Denial of Service Attack can be launched against the system. In this type of attack, the attacker is able to stop the listener, set a listener password so that the listener cannot be started without a password, although the DBA simply has to edit the file and remove the password line.
My personal recommendation is, Continue to have adequate password controls for access to LISTNER. The DBA should ensure that the password is encrypted. -
Setting up Listener Password for Oracle 9.2.0.7
I am looking for information on configuration needed for "stopsap" when password is set up for the 9i listener.
Hi Inho,
When a listener password is set, you don't need a special configuration to start/stop sap.
The password is to protect the listener operation, not the connection to it.
It's started with the ora<sid> user before the sap instance starts, and stopped after it stops.

Setting listener password in oracle 8i
i have some very old windows databases that are 8.1.0.7. I am not able to upgrade these.
I am trying to set a password.
1. go to command line
2. lsnrctl
3. set password <password>
LSNRCTL> set password l1stener1$
The command completed successfully
LSNRCTL> save_config
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(
21)))
No changes to save for LISTENER.
The command completed successfully
LSNRCTL>Why does it say nothing to save?
3. When I type status
I get: Security: off
How do I verify that there is a password? I can't turn the listener off. Its a production database.
When I look in my listener.ora file, it does not appear to be getting updated with a password?
Edited by: Guess2 on Sep 30, 2009 12:20 PMFirst: Always test in a test environment before doing it in production.
Next: If you are very brief, you can stop and restart the listener without interupting service.
The only people who might be affected would be someone who happened to be attempting to connect at the split second your listener is down. Otherwise, existing connections should not be impacted. But, do NOT do this in production (never, ever, ever). Got it?
Finally, if you have set the password, changed the password, and saved your configuration, you should be able to look into your listener.ora file and see the password setting. It should look something like:
#----ADDED BY TNSLSNR 30-SEP-2009 15:41:13---
PASSWORDS_LISTENER = 9BD20802761D432E
There are numerous sites discussing listener passwords.
Do a search on "lsnrctl set password"
Hope that helps...

TNS-1190 despite listener password
Hi,
we are migrating from em 11g to em 12c. Now we are getting listener error TNS-1190 "trc_directory (TNS-1190),. Please check log for details. ". As per note 1399060.1 I set listener password and changed "Monitoring Configuration" in oms but the same error still occurs.

Thanks in advanceHi
I suggest first check you listener log. If you still see messages "trc_directory * 1190", you have not fixed the problem with your listener password.
If you setup the listener password properly on the server, you need then to place it in the listener config on OEM side.
Go to Listener Menu ->Target Setup -> Monitoring Configuration and place the password in "Listener Password" field. Then save the config.
and see again. if it does not help try to reboot the agent.

TNS Listener -ORA-12514 error following database shutdown - Oracle 11g
Hi
I have hit a problem with my oracle development database.
When in sqlplus I executed the shutdown command, but nothing happened for several minutes and it was just hanging. No messages were displayed to the screen. The only thing was to close the command window. When I open sqlplus again and enter in the user name password as sysdba I am getting ORA 12514 TNS Listener could not resolve service in descriptor. This is odd as I could log on before and use the database. So I thought that the services were still shutting down I waited, and using the Windows snap on tool for Oracle 11g, I restarted the services on the database, but this has had no effect.
Even using EM made no difference because I couldn't log on to perform a startup or recovery.
So, please does anyone know how I can fix this?

regards
sridharWhy are you reviving a thread that has been dormant for 18 months and had nothing that looked at all like your problem?
Anyway ...
First, Is your client (from which you are running sqlplus) on the same machine as the database? If not, it will never connect as 'localhost' is a non-routable address.
Second, which version of windows is your database on?
Third, we see what your listener and tnsnames files look like, but that's not the whole story. Show us the results of :
c:> lsnrctl status(Use copy and paste to show us the full command and response from a command prompt)
Fourth, read my standard explanation and see if it leads you to any clues.
=================================
A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners or to name the listener as if it belongs to a particular database. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
larry =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = curley)
)Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larrytns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
