Setting backgrounds for JButtons

Hello,
As part of a team project, we have to design a Java version of Bejeweled. Our program has a 2-d array of 64 JButton's we're using to represent the jewels. I'm having difficulties changing the background color of these JButtons. When the user makes a set of 3, I'd like to set the background color of those JButton's to magenta for a brief time, to indicate that a set of 3 has indeed been made. In other parts of my program, the following works to set the background:
image[i][j].setBackground(Color.green)
This works just fine in several places. However, whenever I need to set the color of Buttons in the image array from outside of it's home class, the instruction is executed, but it simply doesn't set the appriopriate color. Any or all insight as to why this is happening is appreciated.

Post the code?

  • Background for JButton

    Hi all I am doing design a background for JButton and also doing design a metal look and place this as
    backgroung rather than using the plain colours eg black, red.
    I dont want to use setIcon because I would like to place an Icon on top eg an arrow for previous or next..
    Here is my sample code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class JImageButton extends JButton
    Image backgroundImage;
    public JImageButton()
    super();
    public JImageButton( Action a )
    super( a );
    public JImageButton( Icon icon )
    super( icon );
    public JImageButton( String text )
    super( text );
    public JImageButton( String text, Icon icon )
    super( text, icon );
    public void setBackgroundImage( Image image )
    MediaTracker mt = new MediaTracker( this );
    mt.addImage( image, 0 );
    try
    mt.waitForAll();
    backgroundImage = image;
    catch( InterruptedException x )
    System.err.println(
    "Specified background image could not be loaded." );
    public void paintComponent( Graphics g )
    super.paintComponent( g );
    Color saved = g.getColor();
    g.setColor( getBackground() );
    g.fillRect( 0, 0, getWidth(), getHeight() );
    g.setColor( saved );
    if( backgroundImage != null )
    int imageX = ( getWidth() - backgroundImage.getWidth( this ) ) / 2;
    int imageY = ( getHeight() - backgroundImage.getHeight( this ) ) / 2;
    g.drawImage( backgroundImage, imageX, imageY, this );
    if( !getText().equals( "" ) )
    g.drawString( super.getText(), getWidth() / 2, getHeight() / 2 );
    if( getIcon() != null )
    Icon icon = getIcon();
    icon.paintIcon( this, g, 10, 10 );
    public Dimension getpreferredSize()
    Dimension oldSize = super.getPreferredSize();
    Dimension newSize = new Dimension();
    Dimension returnSize = new Dimension();
    if( backgroundImage != null )
    newSize.width = backgroundImage.getWidth( this ) + 1;
    newSize.height = backgroundImage.getHeight( this ) + 1;
    if( oldSize.height > newSize.height )
    returnSize.height = oldSize.height;
    else
    returnSize.height = newSize.height;
    if( oldSize.width > newSize.width )
    returnSize.width = oldSize.width;
    else
    returnSize.width = newSize.width;
    return( returnSize );
    And here's a tester to show how it works...
    code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class JImageButtonTest extends JFrame
    JButton jb1, jb2;
    JImageButton jib1, jib2, jib3;
    Image backgroundImage;
    ImageIcon icon;
    public JImageButtonTest()
    super( "Test for JImageButton" );
    Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaulttoolkit();
    // Replace "someImage" and "anotherImage" with your own
    // images...
    backgroundImage = tk.getImage( "someImage.gif" );
    Image iconImage = tk.getImage( "anotherImage.gif" );
    icon = new ImageIcon( iconImage );
    jib1 = new JImageButton( "Button 1" );
    jib2 = new JImageButton( "Button 2" );
    jib3 = new JImageButton( "Button 3", icon );
    jib2.setBackgroundImage( backgroundImage );
    jib3.setBackgroundImage( backgroundImage );
    jb1 = new JButton( "JButton 1" );
    jb2 = new JButton( "JButton 2", icon );
    JPanel p1 = new JPanel();
    p1.add( jib1 );
    p1.add( jib2 );
    p1.add( jib3 );
    JPanel p2 = new JPanel();
    p2.add( jb1 );
    p2.add( jb2 );
    getContentPane().add( p1, BorderLayout.SOUTH );
    getContentPane().add( p2, BorderLayout.NORTH );
    public static void main( String[] args )
    JImageButtonTest jibt = new JImageButtonTest();
    jibt.addWindowListener( new ExitHandler() );
    jibt.pack();
    jibt.setVisible( true );
    class ExitHandler extends WindowAdapter
    public void windowClosing( WindowEvent e )
    System.exit( 0 );

  • Setting background for single row in JTable

    Hi,
    I have a table which uses the DefaultCellRenderer for cols0,1,3-5
    while column 2 uses a custom renderer.
    When user right clicks mouse on one of the rows i get the rowindex and colindex selected and tries to set background color for this row. but the whole table get painted(of course except 2nd column)...rather i need just the row to be colored.....any solution is greatly appreciated.the code is below....
    int rowIndex=table.rowAtPoint(p);
         int colIndex = table.columnAtPoint(p);
         for (int i = 0; i < 6; i++) {
              if (i!=2){
                   DefaultTableCellRenderer r = (DefaultTableCellRenderer) table.getCellRenderer(rowIndex,i);
                   Component c = taskListTbl.prepareRenderer(r, rowIndex, i);
    c.setBackground(Color.yellow);
              }

  • Setting background for safari

    I just recently swtiched to Mac and discovered that a few of
    my sites are lining up right because they were designed for IE,
    etc. This site in particular is a good example:
    Jeffrey Lloyd Website
    I don't know anything about converting for Safari. Is there
    any easy way or does it have to be completely reworked?
    Many thanks!

    If you like
    http://www.chrissmither.com,
    look at that page code.
    and especially the style sheet, which is there:
    http://www.chrissmither.com/cs_style.css
    In this style sheet, you'll see the style for the background,
    applied to the body tag:
    body {
    font-family: Arial,Helvetica;
    font-size:13px;
    color: #110000;
    margin:0; padding:0;
    text-align:center;
    background-color:rgb(56,40,24);
    background-image:url('images/mainsite_empty_lrg4.jpg');
    background-repeat:none;
    background-attachment:scroll;
    background-position:top center;
    compare this to your background style...
    The important thing here is:
    background-position:top center;
    this will center the background horizontally.
    But this is just the beginning, because if your background
    gets centered, your content will be off,
    since your content is not centered (it's in a Layer). Using a
    background for page layout is a bad
    idea anyways. For example if I increase the text size in my
    browser preferences, your text content
    goes beyind the bottom limit of your background.
    So in short
    background image as layout: bad idea
    using Layers: bad idea
    I suggest you study css and html a little bit, don't use
    Layers, use regular divs and tables, use
    Design view (no layout view) and look at your code as much as
    possible as you go and experiement.

  • How can I set background for JTextArea

    plz help me!

    textArea.setBackground(Color.black);What's the problem? If you need an image, you could try layering the JTextArea over a JLabel, and have the background of the JTextArea transparent. It might work.

  • Background for eacth desktop

    When I set background for desktop, all of others are showing with thesame background image. I read in user guide that one can set different background for each desktop. Is it true? Am I missing anything?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Create a background set.
    You need 4 images, ideally cxropped and scaled to 800x480
    rename them myimages_01.jpg, myimages_02.jpg etc...
    create a file that identifies your image set, for example.
    .myimages.desktop  << Note the dot at the start
    In the file you need the information
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Background Image
    Name=myimges
    Hidden=True
    X-File1=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/myiamges_01.jpg
    X-File2=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/myiamges_02.jpg
    X-File3=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/myiamges_03.jpg
    X-File4=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/myiamges_04.jpg
    X-Order=01
    Stick all the files in N900 images folder.
    If you create the file on a PC then you might have trouble naming it .images.desktop on a PC, so you will probably need to rename it after you transfer it to you N900.

  • Problem in Setting Background Color for JButton

    Hi,
    I am using Background color for JButton (color is selected from the customized JColorChooser created by us) where it contains the option of transparency. If we choose light color, then the background is set to JButton, but when we mouse-over the JButton, other components inside the container (JPanel) is getting displayed inside the button.
    Can anyone help to sort out this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Here is the code.
    DialogWrapper is JDialog and ColorEditorPane is JPanel.
    DialogWrapper     dlg         = new DialogWrapper();
    ColorEditorPane colorPanel = new ColorEditorPane();
    colorPanel.setValue( _data.getTransparentColor());
    dlg.showWrappedDialog( colorPanel, "color_help", "color_dialog" );
    if( dlg.isOK())
    Color chosenColor = (Color) colorPanel.getValue().getContent();
    _data.setTransparentColor( chosenColor );
    _transparentColorDisplay.setBackground( chosenColor );
    _transparentColorDisplay.setOpaque( true );
    this.repaint();
    this.doLayout();
    this.validate();
    }I've several components like JCheckBox, JRadioButton, JTextField in "this".

  • Set property for  background color for JButton

    I am attempting to change the colors of the UI for JButton. The change does not appear to be taking. The reason appears to be that JButton, and for that matter JLabel setOpaque(false); How can I globally change this to setOpaque(true);
    Second is there a way to save the default property hash table after the changes are made so that it will run the next time the program is executed.

    Thank you for responding. I don't feel that I have been clear in the statement of the problem. I have written a medium size desktop application(20,000 statements). I am trying to customize the color scheme by modifying the default laf properties color entries. I can modify JPanel through a put to the properties hash table. When I attempt to change the background color for JLabel and JButton it doesn't seem to take. I believe that the reason it doesn't take is because opaque(false). Is there a property that allows the overide of opaque to true or do I have to change all of the numerous JButtons in my program.
    I have decided to store all changes in a file and make the changes at the point that the program initializes each time its run.
    I am not looking for specific code but an approach.
    I would appreciate your advice.

    Is there a way to change the color of the Bezier Curves and points to a different color other than black  I find it perplexing while setting points and curves working on a photo that needs to be separated from it's background for placement on transparent backgrounds. Any thoughts?

    Yes. Well, sort of: instead of a "path", set the pen tool to "shape" in the tool properties. Then set the fill colour to transparent, and the stroke colour to the colour you want. You can also set the stroke width.
    Not perfect, but at least you can see the path more clearly - the anchor points and handles still remain the default colour. Open the path panel, and right-mouse click the path shape to create a selection based on that shape. The Paths panel menu also allows you to create work paths based on that shape.
    Unfortunately when you try to move the handles the black thin outline appears again until you release the mouse button.
    This is one of several things that works better in Photoline: in Photoline, once the path is set to a specific colour, editing the path uses the actual colour and stroke width. which is extremely handy for creating path based selection with awkward background colours and/or a high resolution screen. In Photoline the handles and bezier points are also much, much larger, which makes it rather simpler to work with as well - especially on a higher resolution screen. And when selected the handles and points are a clear red with a black outline - again easier to spot and identify. I just works better, in my opinion.

  • Is a script available to set a default background for email messages?

    I am new to the community, not to Mac though. Currently I am on a new MacBook Air, Lion installed.
    I had a couple of minor issues about mail, the first I solved myself using automator, and succeding in sending an attachment file from finder. It went on working also after the upgrade from snow leopard to lion.
    I could not find out how to set a specific default background for new email messages (e.g. a color, or a certain template); I do not want to do it everytime for each message. I tried automator, the workflows runs ok, tried to save it as service for mail and for finder but it did not catch; as application it works, but veeeery slow.
    When I pull down the mail window, the Services line says "no services available".
    Anyone who worked on this?
    thanks

    Hi ..
    That's not possible as yet but you can provide feedback to Apple here.

  • Setting background image for repeating frame in .pdf report

    Is it possible to set a background image for a repeating frame, and more specifically for a repeating frame rendered in .pdf?
    I do not see any standard property in the navigator for images of any sort and the documentation touches only on setting background images for graphs, which is not the intent in my case. I -did- add an HTML table property background="myimage.jpg" but the report is ultimately generated in .pdf format and I was not surprised to see that the image was not rendered.
    Does anyone know if setting a background image as described is even possible, and if so, how? A second but less optimum solution would be setting the image as the background for all report pages, again in .pdf.
    Many thanks.

    Hi Raj,
    Yes you can have an image in the background. Thats possible if you are using XML forms as an iview or ivew dev in WebDynpro...

    Please do need full help,its urgent req.

    Hello,
    open the file in Excel and save it, just to ensure that Excel writes all the additional stuff it thinks is necessary.
    Now change the background colour of the header and save the file again but with a different name.
    Open both files in a text editor and look at the differences. That's what you need to change in your code.
    Alternatively you can use packages like xml_spreadsheet or ExcelDocumentType, both write the same file format that you use in your code and you don't have to reinvent the wheel.
