Setting children of managed beans

Question

A simple example that I can't figure out:
<h:form id="form">
<h:dataTable value="#{eBean.reportProxies}" var="proxy">
  <h:column>
   <h:dataTable value="#{proxy.fragments}" var="fragment">
    <h:column>
     <h:inputText value="#{fragment.parameterValue}" />
    </h:column>
   </h:dataTable>
  </h:column>
</h:dataTable>
</h:form>"eBean" (and only eBean) is defined as a managed bean.
This works fine on output, but the value of inputText isn't picked up on the submit.
In what I suspect is a related issue, if I instead try to bind such as:
<h:inputText binding="#{fragment.inputText}" />..I get..
JspException: Error setting property 'inputText' in bean of type null
What am I missing here?

Pretty much the same example. Assume A holds 3 instances of B, and B holds 3 instances of C.
The updates fire for the 3 instances of C held by B[2], but not for the instances of C held by B[0] and B[1]. Or to put it another way, the updates are applied to elements of C held by the last B, not the correct B.
