Setting hostname

I'm pretty sure my boss (I hope he doesn't read this) messed up the hostname of one of our server when we were having some problems. It now hast the wrong hostname. In /etc/hostconfig it is set to "-AUTOMATIC-" and I set it to the correct name using "hostname" from a terminal. You have to do something different though don't you? Could some help me? Most services seem to not care but Apache is not happy with a non-existant DNS name.
Thanks

I have working DNS so I do not want to cange the hostconfig file from automatic. I tried changeip and it didn't do it. Finally, I found a reference to this file:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Near the bottom of the file it had my incorrect hostname in an entry. I checked a couple servers that were functioning properly and their files were roughly the same except for that hostname entry. After deleting the entry my problem is now solved.

I already have things like inetutils and net-tools installed what am I missing?

Sorry, I've never seen this error. Hopefully someone with more information will answer soon.
Does setting your hostname by editing /etc/hostname not work for some reason? I know the wiki says you should use hostnamectl to set the hostname, but I think you can just edit /etc/hostname and be done with it.
Well from the post prior to you I am thinking you can, I was just trying to follow the wiki as written. I am currently running on a restored copy so I can work because it was messing with stuff I use. I will attempt update again as soon as AUR is back up.

  • [SOLVED] Setting hostname to...

I have defined in my /etc/rc.conf my desired hostname Cyrodiil' and it also comes up in the boot output as "Setting hostname to Cyrodiil", however, when I type the command 'hostname', it outputs the hostname which I used ages ago, and not Cyrodiil.
I can manually set the hostname with the command: 'hostname Cyrodiil', but this only holds out until I reboot again.
    Am I missing something?
Solved: It did not have anything to do with /etc/hosts. It seems that the ssh server authentication keys have hardcoded within them the hostname and this caused the reverting back to the old hostname. I have regenerated the authentication keys and now the new hostname is now correct, even after reboot.

  • Setting hostname in Mail !

    Hi,
Not sure if this is a Mail or my gateway issue: The issue is that when I send an email, and then look at the header of that message, it says "Received from unknown"
Here is a snippet of the header:
    Received: from unknown (HELO p3presmtp01-06.prod.phx3.secureserver.net) ([XXX.XXX.XX.XXX]) (envelope-sender <SRS0=yeMC=ZW=myDomain.com=[email protected]>) by smtp30.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net (qmail-1.03) with SMTP for <[email protected]>; 12 Sep 2008 15:33:33 -0000
(IP address and domain name masked)
Where and how is this hostname set in Mail? I am sending this message from a MacBook Pro 10.5.4. The hostname on the machine is, as far as I can tell, is set when I look in Sharing. I am otherwise on a LAN and the Linksys router with a static public IP.
    Patrick

Unless you have explicitly created a user postmaster, you must make sure an alias for it exists in either /etc/postfix/aliases or /etc/postfix/virtual (depending whether the domain is a local one or a virtual one).
Also the alias must point to a user capable of receiving mail.
The default on OS X Server is for the local postmaster account to be aliased to root. root however should never receive mail directly and thus is disabled. Edit /etc/postfix/aliases and make root point to an actual account (instructions abound on this forum).

  • Confusion on setting hostname and DNS

    Greetings,
I have S10 on x86. In attempting to get the DHCP client up and running I followed the instructions from the S10 Documentation and ran sys-unconfig. This seemed to work well in that it did handle the setup of DHCP for my lan card. One thing that it didn't seem to set up correctly was my hostname.
When the system reboots the host name comes up 'unknown'. I am able to manually set the hostname but I'd like it to be permanent. I read the pages on requesting a specific host name from the DHCP server but I don' t think this is what I want to do and it doesn't seem to work for me anyway. I suspect that part of the issue is that the DHCP 'server' is nothing more than a switch/router and only provides IP addresses, nothing more.
How do I set the permanent hostname? Is it as obvious as /etc/hostname?
    Thanks
    TC

    Hi,
    For a dhcp client, don't create a /etc/hostname file.
It'll be created (empty) for you.
To get the hostname, create a file /etc/nodename
with the hostname you want inside.
    # cat /etc/nodename
    maxlap
    # uname -a
    SunOS maxlap 5.10 Generic i86pc i386 i86pc
    # ls -l /etc/hostname.elxl0
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Feb 7 10:03 /etc/hostname.elxl0
    Note that I didn't create /etc/hostname.elxl0.
It was created at boot for the interface on that machine.

  • Set hostname from wgm computer record?

We used to set a given client Mac's "sharing name" via a little check-box. We maintained computer lists for print, app, and dock settings already, so why not control their names as well in one go? After a netinstall, each client would rename itself, not as part of the netboot process, but from its computer record in wgm (we don't use the "Sharing Name" for file sharing, but do use the name extensively for ARD, tracking software, content filter logs, etc). That way, even moving machines around without netinstalling them would still allow for quick setting-changes, including hostname, as soon as the client Mac booted. For the life of me I cannot find how to dictate down hostnames in 10.5 server.
If this functionality has been removed (sigh), then what should I be doing? The goal, of course is to simplify our deployment process, be it new hardware or a swap, so that only one list needs to be changed (preferably server-side as with a wgm computer record). I'm comfortable with any calibre of solution so long as it is very robust and reliable, and will allow for an easy final process. That is, I'll make the time- and learning- investment to set up "the right way" now, be it a new server or to learn Bombich's [PHPServices|http://www.bombich.com/software/docs/netrestore/English/index.html ], or, or whatever... just so when 300 clients need to be deployed by our horrifically understaffed IT trench guys, they don't have to authenticate 900 times and rename 300 times.
If I'm doing it all wrong, let me know... really, any advice appreciated.
    Cheers, Joel

  • Cannot set hostname

Hello, recently I moved to a different place, and changed my ISP aswell. Now I'm using the router provided by my new ISP. My problem is, that unlike with the previous ISP the hostname specified in the rc.conf file isn't set correctly.
The corresponding part of my rc.conf:
    # HOSTNAME: Hostname of machine. Should also be put in /etc/hosts
    HOSTNAME="skynet"
    interface=eth0
    address=
    netmask=
    broadcast=
    gateway=
I've been suggested to add the hostname to /etc/hosts. It didn't work. My /etc/hosts:
    [zyxon@dhcppc0 ~]$ cat /etc/hosts
    # /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
    #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost myhost
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain skynet
    127.0.0.1 skynet.localdomain localhost skynet
    ::1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    # End of file
And the hostname is dhcppcN insted of skynet. How can I use the hostname skynet again?

  • How to set hostname using dynamic binding for FTP, AQ, SMTP adaptersin BPEL

I am using Oracle BPEL and SOA 11g and my requirement is to send files and messages to different destinations ( hostname ) using dynamic JCA bindings. All hostname to be used other related information for destination is stored in database. My BPEL flow should retrieves the hostnames using one webservice and then set the hostname in FTP, AQ and SMTP adapters using dynamic JCA bindings.
I came across http://rahullahiri.blogspot.in/2011/09/configuring-ftp-adapters-in-oracle-soa.html and http://www.soabyte.com/2010/11/jca-dynamic-partnerlinks-in-soa-11g.html but unsure if we can dynamically set the hostname also for the adapters mentioned in the BPEL flow.

    Hi,
Its good that u pasted the complete log file. In your environment you have to run this upgrade tool only once from any of the middle tier.
And with respect to your error that u got in precheck is quite simple. All u have to do is just run this script from by connecting to portal schema using sqlplus.
    Run dropupg.sql
    Location-------- /raid/product/OraHome_1/upgrade/temp/portal/prechktmp/dropupg.sql
Later you re-run the upgrade tool and let me know the status.

  • Set hostname during post install

I am building a 10.7 Lion NetInstall image. What I want to setup at some point during the imaging process be it before the install or post configuration it prompts me to set a hostname for a system and then it auto binds the system to our AD domain using that hostname. Is this possible to setup on a Custom NetInstall image on System Image Utility? If so how would I go about setting that up.
I saw how you can create a predefined list of hostnames or have it auto set a hostname using a prefix and the mac address. However I want to be able to define a completely custom hostname during the image process.

There is no way to get the system to prompt you for a host name short of going through the setup assistant.

  • Need to set hostname and domain name

    Hi All,
    I need to
    1) set my "hostname" (foo), and
    2) set my "domain name" (acme.local)
such that my machine identifies itself as "foo.acme.local". Anyone know how to do this? (I found the host name in file sharing, but it will not let me set the domain name.)
    Many thanks,
    -T

    etresoft wrote:
Your domain is the name of your server.
What gave you that idea? My domain name is "acme.local". It is not the name of my server. I have three servers on my network. The one with the DNS, DHCP, and firewall servers on it called "server.acme.local".
I am confused about why you feel the need to have a subdomain.
This is not a subdomain. What gave you the impression I was asking for a subdomain?
What you seek to accomplish is entirely unnecessary and far more involved than just editing a config file.
Pretty easy in Linux and Windows. They just grab the domain name from the DHCP server. Or, you can hand configure them if you wish. Do you know how accomplish same in 10.6.4?
Give your machine a name in System Preferences > Sharing and it will have the name "whatever.local". That is all you need.
I would like to the entire network name displayed correctly. "whatever.local" is incorrect. It should be "machinename.domainname" or "foo.acme.local". In my example, "foo" is the machine name ("whatever" in your example) and "acme.local" is the domain name. (Not the server's name, by the way.)
"System Preferences > Sharing" will not let me add any extra periods. And will not let me change the ".local" either. (In this instance, I want the ".local".)
Here is the reverse rule I had to hand create:
    182 PTR foo.acme.local.
(The dot on the end is not a mistake.)
I do not want a stray computer floating around that does not identify itself correctly. "foo.acme.local" is correct. "foo.local" is not.
By the way, this computer gets its IP address from a DHCP server, which does tell this Apple what the domain name is. (It gets ignored.)
    /etc/dhcpd.conf
    option domain-name "acme.local";
That is the config file for your DHCP server. You would use this if your machine were sharing its internet connection, for example. You don't need to edit this file.
You misunderstand. The DHCP server, not on this Mac, is not being used to share Internet connections. It is being used to assign IP addresses to machines on the local network. It is also being used to assign fixed IP's to network printers based on their MAC addresses. In my network, these are "off Internet" addresses. The firewall, also not on this Mac, it used to share a single Internet connection with all the internal users.
Hmmm. I created the file (dhcpd.conf) by hand. And, yes I do need to edit it all the time. Especially when I have bone headed machines on my network that do not follow or respond to standard networking conventions. This Mac does not accept the domain name given to it by my DHCP server and as such my DHCP server will not automatically update my DNS tables.
Evidence of this can be found in the dhcpd.leases, where I had to hand enter
    client-hostname "foo";
into the lease table (did not do me any good).
I am wondering if 10.6.4 is not capable of handling this kind of standard network naming convention. (FreeBSD, which Apple run on top, is capable, so I am confused.)
MacOS X does not run on top of FreeBSD. They are different operating systems. MacOS X has a POSIX layer which most closely resembles BSD, that is all.
Interesting. Thank you for pointing out the difference. I bet POSIX know how, just like FreeBSD, which it resembles.
If I change the name in /etc/hosts, will Apple over ride it? (I am not at the machine or I would just try it.)
You do not "change" the name in /etc/hosts. You are just adding entries into your machine's lookup table. You can add as many aliases to as many IP addresses as you want. This is not the same as changing your machine's name, but it may be sufficient for what you are trying to accomplish - assuming I knew that, which I don't.
Then, where do I make the change?
10.6.4 did not tell the DHCP server what its name was either, so I had to hand add it into my DNS forward and reverse records. AAAAHHHHH!!!!
I strongly advise against editing files you don't understand.
I create my entire DNS configuration by hand, including my forward and reverse tables. Oh yes, I understand it, do I ever understand it. You should not jump to conclusions: it is insulting. I am presuming you meant no insult. Just be more careful next time.
I think that what is happening here is that 10.6.4 is not set up to follow standard network naming conventions. I would posit that the idea is to keep home users out of trouble. Probably a good thing. If 10.6.4 is not capable of using standard naming conventions, (or following standard DHCP conventions), I would just like a confirmation of that so I will stop trying to figure out how to do it. And, stop wasting my time and just hand configure any additional Mac's that enter my network.
Again, a "confirmation that it can not be done", or "how to do it" is what I am looking for.
    Thank you for the assistance,
    -T

  • Incorrect setting hostname over DHCP with systemd

I'm using `netcfg' with `ethernet-dhcp'. My `/etc/dhcpcd.conf' contains the line
    option domain_name_servers, domain_name, domain_search, host_name
Unfortunately in most cases (randomly?) my host introduces itself as `localhost'. If I run:
    # dhcpcd -k eth0
    # dhcpcd eth0
    it gets quite confusing:
    $ hostname
    correct.one.obtained.from.dhcp
    $ hostnamectl
    Static hostname: n/a
    Transient hostname: localhost
    Pretty hostname: n/a
    Icon name: computer-desktop
    Chassis: desktop
    Machine ID: fcad978cb45784804c79ace4000004dc
    Boot ID: a282df65df6c4ed0910536ab38087300
    Operating System: Arch Linux
    Kernel: Linux 3.7.5-1-ARCH
    Architecture: x86_64
and for some ttys it is `localhost' while for others: `correct.one.obtained.from.dhcp'.
Looks like a kind of magic or systemd bug?

/etc/host allows static IP to name bindings. It has absolutely nothing to do with the problem described above.
We are using DHCP. A workstation can obtain any IP address (one of 200) and any name (one of 200) via DHCP. The workstation name can be work27 or work85 or work165 or work194 - I don't know it initially. I ask the DHCP server for it and the server sends me some. The daemon (service) that controls DHCP is responsible for obtaining it and setting for the system. Dhcpcd.service does it. Netcfg.service does it or does it not - depending on some random factor.

  • Setting hostname, domainname and static IP address

    Hi,
I have an issue regarding hostname and domainname on Oracle Linux 5.4.
I followed the steps given on this link for Oracle Linux 5.4 installation.
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/OracleEnterpriseLinux5Installation.php
As per the snapshots and guidelines given on this link,I should have been asked to configure network interface.
But It didn't show me the screens shown in steps 16,17 and 18 where I could have entered hostname, domainname,IP etc.
And when I checked after installation,it showed me
    hostname
    localhost.localdomain
    and
    domainname
    (none)
That's because it took DHCP network configuration automatically(Correct me if i am wrong!!).
Although I am going to turn it's currnet DHCP assigneed IP into static IP.
Now,as I am going to have to install Oracle E-Business suite on this platform,I must have hostname, domainname and IP set properly.
Please guide me how I can set these three things(hostname, domainname and IP) permenantly.
Also should I turn its current DHCP IP into static IP before changing hostname and domainname or after it?
    Thanks,
    Rushi

  • Problems setting hostname

Using 10.5.1. Apple had a bug in 10.4 when trying to set the hostname using the FQDN which was within a delegated part of the subnet. It would set the host name correctly but issue warnings in the system log that it could not. Now from what I can see, apple have stopped the warning message but also totally stopped setting the hostname from the reverse lookup. Has anyone else come across this problem yet.

Thank you- I have read through that thread and can see some resonance with my issue.
My AOL emails work VERY fast with BB, in fact almost simultaneously received on PC & Torch " ping ping!"
This issue only raised its ugly head when I had 2 Torches replaced by my insurers.
Whilst the claim was in process I used a new Curve, loaded from backup on PC to keep emails going and of course phone & web facilities. ( I use the BB to power internet via bluetooth to my PC / laptop when living on a remote island with no phone lines or power supplies)  All was fine. Swapping email accounts took a few minutes with the usual password confirmations for each AOL screenname etc.
Then the new Torches came back from insurers, and I tried to swap devices. Phoning & texting is fine. Al data and contacts swap over fine.
SETUP email accounts.............stymied every time. It says repeatedly that my user name/password is invalid etc etc etc
Have tried security wipes. Have tried setting up new BB ID & passwords on PC website. All is OK until I try to setup emails on the Torches.  This has used up ridiculous amounts of time- all wasted.
I love the BB phones and the fast email push......in fact I recently bought a new Sony Xperia Z1 but sent it back because of wifi coverage meant no emails on that superb phone for lots of the time.
Good old BB I said..........I always get emails wherever I am. ( Rural Scotland has very patchy radio & wifi coverage)
Was about to purchase new Z10s just to get a bigger screen, but now I am averse to buying ANY BB phone again because this present mess means I may never get emails set up again.  How nuts is that?
Many thanks for all help & suggestions..........boy do I need them!!
Kind wishes from West of Scotland

Solved. Problem was the same like in thread "I/O error while communicating with HTTP server: Connection timed out" - it wasn't accessible IP connection between Ora VM Manager and Ora VM server IP alias for server pool. But there was very confusing message in errorlog: "dispatch https://?uname?:[email protected]:8899/api/3 set_pool_member_ip_list [10.20.11.11], Status: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: I/O error while communicating with HTTP server: Connection timed out [Thu Mar 28 14:36:30 CET 2013]". Noticed IP address was IP address for VM server, not for VM pool, which makes me quite angry.
    Best Regards

  • "No hostname set" error in console log - DNS problem

We are running a MacPro on 10.4.8 server software (mainly for filing, not for hosting domains) and lately it has been coming up with the same error as below. What happens is that it will kick off every user and sometimes the server computer will freeze up and eventually restart itself.
May 22 14:31:50 Server servermgrd: servermgr_dns: no name available via DNS for 192.168.0.XX
May 22 14:31:50 Server servermgrd: servermgr_dns: no hostname set and unable to detect via DNS, services may not function properly - use changeip to repair
When I type in "hostname" in terminal, this is what I get:
    Server.local
When I type in "uname -a" in terminal, this is what I get:
    Darwin Server.local 8.8.1 Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.1: Mon Sep 25 19:42:00 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.13.8.obj~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386
    Any ideas?
MacPro Mac OS X (10.4.8) Server OSX
MacPro Mac OS X (10.4.8) Server OSX
MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Server OSX

I had the EXACT same problem and here is how I fixed it.
    Open terminal and type:
    hostname
    then type in:
    sudo scutil --get HostName
Compare the output of the two commands.
    I had a capitalization difference.
(example: servername01 and SERVERNAME01 are NOT the same thing)
If there is a difference run this command:
    sudo scutil --set HostName <hostname.domain.tld>
Set it to the output of hostname, if that is the correct name. You must use a fully qualified domain name when you do the 'set'. (example: myserver.mydomain.com)
    Hope this helps!
