Set hostname from wgm computer record?

We used to set a given client Mac's "sharing name" via a little check-box. We maintained computer lists for print, app, and dock settings already, so why not control their names as well in one go? After a netinstall, each client would rename itself, not as part of the netboot process, but from its computer record in wgm (we don't use the "Sharing Name" for file sharing, but do use the name extensively for ARD, tracking software, content filter logs, etc). That way, even moving machines around without netinstalling them would still allow for quick setting-changes, including hostname, as soon as the client Mac booted. For the life of me I cannot find how to dictate down hostnames in 10.5 server.
If this functionality has been removed (sigh), then what should I be doing? The goal, of course is to simplify our deployment process, be it new hardware or a swap, so that only one list needs to be changed (preferably server-side as with a wgm computer record). I'm comfortable with any calibre of solution so long as it is very robust and reliable, and will allow for an easy final process. That is, I'll make the time- and learning- investment to set up "the right way" now, be it a new server or to learn Bombich's [PHPServices|http://www.bombich.com/software/docs/netrestore/English/index.html ], or, or whatever... just so when 300 clients need to be deployed by our horrifically understaffed IT trench guys, they don't have to authenticate 900 times and rename 300 times.
If I'm doing it all wrong, let me know... really, any advice appreciated.
Cheers, Joel

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • I have deleted "mail" from my computer, how do I get it back?

    Hi
I deleted Mail from my computer, won't even come up on search facility. This was done about a yr ago, but I love Mail, others drive me mad. Can I get it back? My computer is about 6 yrs old and it won't update past 10.6.8. I have recently purchased a time capsule but of course it won't work on anything less than 10.8. Can I fix both of these problems please.
    thanks Helen

    1. Use Pacifist to extract Mail from your Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater.
    2. The Time Capsule needs to be set up from a computer running a newer Mac OS X version, or a compatible iOS device. Once done, it can be connected to from a Snow Leopard system.

  • Saving volume setting from one computer to another...

    Hi...
My friend and I have identical iPods and we exchange tunes between one another's computers. We'd like the volume setting adjustments made by us in iTunes to be consisent on either iPod. But when we transfer the music files from one computer to the other, the volume settings always goes back to the normal setting.
Is there any way to save the volume settings made in iTunes, from one computer to another?
    Thanks for you time!

Which directories do you mean? The socket-$hostname, tmp-$hostname etc. shouldn't be of any importance and can be left behind. Important for akonadi are the .local/akonadi and .config/akonadi folders. What kind of errors exactly do you get?

  • Can't record shows from my computer

I have been trying to set up a TV show to record from my computer for the last hour with no success. Everytime I locate the TV show and click the Record button a dialog box displays telling me to enter my username and password (FYI - the Verizon website already displays me as logged in). After reentering my username and password the webpage loads back to the Media page about Flex View.

Hey there.  I had the same problem with using firefox and chrome,  for some reason I am forced to use IE to do the recordings from the website.
Also Some folks have TWO usernames
    one to pay their bill
    one to do their email
There are two situations,   if you're not using the username and password to pay your bill then that is your problem.
If you recently went through a merger between those two usernames and the websites (a lot of folks did) then there may be an issue with your username and password., but the chat support may be able to help you with that.

  • I set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

i set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same apple ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

  • So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

  • When I try to set up a link to AOL on the desk top, I get a link to Chrome, which I deleted from my computer. How do I get a link to Firefox?

When I drag the symbol from the URL line to the desktop to set up a link, I get a google chrome icon instead of a firefox icon. I removed chrome from the computer, but I still get a chrome icon which links does not work. How do I get the reference to chrome out of firefox?

Tried again about 30 minutes later, and now I get firefox links. Don't know what changed, but seems to be OK.

how to set a tracking from the computer if someone stolen the ipod

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.

  • Can I record from one computer directly to another?

New to GB and want to play music on a laptop, then record it in GB on the iMac. Can I connect a cable from the laptop's 'out' to the iMac's 'in' port?

My daughter plays YouTube soundtracks of her favourite shows, records them into GB, tweaks them, then makes iMovies with the tracks and found images. Right now, we're recording the YT soundtracks from one computer's speakers using the other computer's built-in mic, so quality is good enough but not pristine. Just looking for a simple solution, not being a big multimedia dad exactly. Do you think an audio cable, with two like connectors would work (if it exists)?

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

To do that you need to be using an IMAP type email account rather than a POP type. Check with your email provider to see if they provide this service and, if so, switch to it on all your devices.
