Setting size of JTable columns

Hi everybody,
Can anyone help me ?
How can I set a column widths of a JTable, but also allow the user to resize them ?
I tried with a code like
TableColumnModel tableColumnModel = table.getColumnModel();
for (int i=0; i < columnsSizes.length; i++) {
   if (columnsSizes[i] > 0) {
        tableColumnModel.getColumn(i).setPreferredWidth(preferedSizeArray);
But it doesn't work :(
When i do [ define the minWidth and maxWidth ]
TableColumnModel tableColumnModel = table.getColumnModel();
for (int i=0; i < columnsSizes.length; i++) {
    if (columnsSizes[i] > 0) {
        tableColumnModel.getColumn(i).setMinWidth(preferedSizeArray);
tableColumnModel.getColumn(i).setMaxWidth(preferedSizeArray[i]);
Columns's sizes are exactly what i want but ... the colums are no more resizable.
So,
if anyone can help me and tell me how can i set a predefined size for some colums and also allow the user to resize them ... that would be kind from him.
Thanks

Hi guys,
It's me again ... but I tried your tricks and they don't work :(

  • Easier way to set post-constructor JTable column names?

    I have a class that extends JTable. It also has a pair of inner classes that extend DefaultTableCellRenderer and AbstractTableModel so I can dynamicaly adjust the number of rows and their contents. That's not the problem - that part works fine. The problem is the column headers. My table doesn't currently have any but I want to add them.
    The column quantity is constant at 3 and should always be the same 3 Strings. It would be nice if I could use the JTable constructors that take a Vector or Object[] of column names from the start in my new class' constructor. But I don't think I can because at that point I don't know how many rows there will be or what they'll contain. Trying to set rowData to null just caused runtime exceptions.
    So the alternative seems to be to call setColumnModel() within the constructor, passing it a DefaultTableColumnModel. Which then requires I call addColumn() three times. Each time passing it a new TableColumn object. Each of which requires that I separately call setHeaderValue() after I construct it to set the header name. Am I right in that is the only way to do it? It just seems overly complex.

    I'll post a streamlined version of my class in case that will help...
    public class TotalsTable extends JTable

  • JTable Model   --  How to set the width of columns

    Hello,
    This project of mine is due in 2 days. :(
    I am using AbstractTableModel and I can't figure out how to set the columns' width inside my JTable?
    This following code does not work.
    int vColIndex = 1;
    TableColumn col = table.getColumnModel().getColumn(vColIndex);
    int width=399;
    col.setPreferredWidth(width);Please remember, that I'm using AbstractTableModel and not just simple JTables.
    Thanks in advance.

    The DataModel (AbstractTableModel or otherwise) has nothing to do with the table column size. The DataModel is used to store data.
    When you create a JTable using a DataModel then a TableColumn is created for each column in the DataModel using a default column size. The normal order of creation would be:
    TableModel model = new DefaultTableModel(...);
    JTable table = new JTable(model);
    Now that the table and table columns are created you can change the size of the columns:
    int vColIndex = 1;
    TableColumn col = table.getColumnModel().getColumn(vColIndex);
    int width=399;
    col.setPreferredWidth(width);
    So your code looks ok.
    However, if somewhere in you code you do:
    a) table.setModel(...)
    b) fireTableStructureChanged();
    then the table columns are recreated based on the current DataModel and the table column size would be reset to the default values.

    Coming from VB6 to Java is hard for me. Syntax is so much different.

    You are going to need to derive a renderer class for your Column from DefaultTableCellRenderer and override the following function with something like this:
    @Override
         public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable jTable, Object oValue, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int nRow, int nColumn) {

  • Set custom font size for one column

    hey guys! I am trying to decrease the font-size for one column based on an lov and used

    brgds,
    seb

    Hello Seb,
    >> Might it be important whether the column is of type "...based on lov"?
    If by "...based on lov" you mean “Display as Text (based on LOV, does not save state)” the answer is yes. This type of column is not treated as an updatable column (the implementation is by using a regular <td> tag and not the <input> tag) so the Apex engine ignores the Element Attributes field.
    As far as I can tell, this column can only be styled in the query itself (and you need to implement the LOV yourself).
    Another option is to use a select list and disabled it, but the column will appear in gray, and with small font size it doesn’t look that good.

    Arie.

    You can write your own tablemodel,

  • How to catch selected text in JTable Column

    Hi there,
    I am learning JTable. Need help for How to get the selected text from the JTable Column which is set to be editable.
    for example in JTextFiled you have method on getSelectedText(), is there any method for tracking the selected text.
    Thanks in advance
    Minal

    Here's an example of the model I used in my JTable. Not the "getValueAt" method & "getRecordAt" method. You will have to have a Record object - but it only contains the attributes of an inserted record (with appropriate getters & setters). Hope this helps.
    public class FileModel5 extends AbstractTableModel
    public boolean isEditable = false;
    protected static int NUM_COLUMNS = 3;
    // initialize number of rows to start out with ...
    protected static int START_NUM_ROWS = 0;
    protected int nextEmptyRow = 0;
    protected int numRows = 0;
    static final public String file = "File";
    static final public String mailName = "Mail Id";
    static final public String postName = "Post Office Id";
    static final public String columnNames[] = {"File", "Mail Id", "Post Office Id"};

  • Autofit JTable column headers

    I have a problem. I am using eclipse. What i want to do is that in a Jtable, i want such a mechanism that no matter what the table headers are(any font, size), the jtable adjusts the column width to show the whole table header. The headers and the fonts are read from a file.
    presently i m doing this:
    //used to set the column widths
    FontMetrics metrics = tbl.getFontMetrics(tbl.getFont());
    // Set column widths
    int tempWidth;
    for (int i=0; i<columnNames.length ; i++)
    tempWidth = metrics.stringWidth(tbl.getColumnName(i))+ (2 * tbl.getColumnModel().getColumnMargin());
    tcm.getColumn(i).setPreferredWidth(tempWidth);
    tcm.getColumn(i).setPreferredWidth(columnNames.length()*7);
    The problem is that this does not work for all fonts.
    Can ne 1 plz provide sample code???

    Here's the full code I posted before to do this.
    It resizes the entire JTable to fit the column size, no matter what font properties, and
    optionally includes using the column header as well.

  • JTable - column move and column spacing

    Hi,
    Can someone please show me how to prevent users from being able to move columns. I am not finding any code to do this.
    Also, how do I set fixed width for columns. I am using vectors to populate the data
    Much appreciated

    Hi,
    This is a beginner level question and you should have been able to figure this out yourself.
    Have an array with size equal to the number of columns you have and store in each element of the array the size you want for the column. Then your code should be easy.
    // For a table with 4 columns
    double [] columnWidths = { 100.0, 109.0, 120.0, 95.0 };
    TableColumnModel columnModel = jTable.getColumnModel();
                   for ( int k = 0, count = columnModel.getColumnCount(); k < count; k++ ) {
                       TableColumn column = columnModel.getColumn( k );
                       // Do you mean this?
                      column.setResizable( true );
                       // or this ?
                                                                                   column.setMinWidth( columnWidths[k] );
                       column.setMaxWidth( columnWidths[k] );

    how do I change the font in a JTable column header?
    thanks

    JTableHeader header = yourTable.getTableHeader();
