Setting up Mail with Optimum Online

I'm trying to set up Mail to work with the internet service provider Optimum Online on a brand new MacBook running OS X 10.5. This is a "first time" set up for Mail. I think I entered all the information correctly but I cannot connect to the Optimum Online Mail server. I can't complete the setup. I'm sure I have the correct user id and password to access the mail server. Mail just won't complete the automatic set up of the account. Does anyone have any ideas I can try to fix this? I can't use Mail at all, since I can't get past the automatic set up screens at all...
Thanks!

Thanks again for the advice. I was able to finally connect to receive email, so I know I'm connected to the incoming mail server. I still can't send email though. I'm not able to connect to the outgoing server. It is a POP3 account. I've entered what I think are the correct server names, but I can't connect to the outgoing mail server. I did delete the com.apple.mail.plist file and restarted Mail, but the start up screen still had some information already added in the fields. After my latest attempt to set up the account, after waiting for quite some time, I did an message saying "unable to connect to smtp server. Make sure username and password are correct, etc. I clicked continue and was able to get into Mail. For some reason, this particular ISP uses the same server name for both incoming and out going email. I haven't run across this before. Also, in Mail Preferences, under Accounts, the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): field has the correct server name followed by (Offline). I can't seem to take this server online. Going to the advanced tab shows the "Use default Ports" (25, 465,587) radio button selected. Authentication: Password, etc.. I don't know if this helps you or not. Thanks again for the advice... Ed

  • Having trouble setting up Mail with a POP account

I am trying to set up Mail with my Universities webmail service, and according to their tech page I need to set it to POP. I also made sure that I have the incoming and outgoing mail servers correct, and i've made certain that I am entering my username and password correctly. But when it loads and trys to get my mail it says that the password I supplied is incorrect, but I know that's not true. I am absolutley sure that both the username and password are entered correctly.
Does anybody know how I might fix this?
p.s. my girlfriend is having the exact same problem, so it isn't just me entering something wrong

I know you said the usernames/passwords are correct but, (if you can), login via webmail using those same strings, see if that works.
Write the text to a note and copy and paste from there so you are sure you've not input something wrongly.
Failing that do a quick keychain first aid too.
If that don't work then I'm out of ideas, (for now at least).

  • Mac Mail with Optimum VERY slow

Over the past few days downloading e-mail from Optimum On Line using Mac Mail has become VERY sluggish.
A 4 MB e-mail with an attachment takes over 7 minutes to download!!!
Yesterday it took over 30 minutes to download about 8 e-mails.
Outgoing mail and internet are fine, just a problem with incoming mail.
I contacted Optimum several times the last few days.
We checked the settings, by-passed my Airport Extreme and replaced the modem.
    The problem still exists.
Optimum says they checked my signal and everything looks good and they have no idea what the problem is.
It is also happening on my wife's 2 week old iMac as well.
    Anyone else experiencing this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    HI John,
    Try a different Airport channel.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.
If that doesn't help, go to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration and move these files to the Trash.
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.applen.nat.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    Restart your Mac(s).

Apple® Mail lets you check your Workspace Email accounts on your desktop.
This article uses information from Mac OS X 10.9.5, but previous versions use similar settings.
NOTE: After adding multiple email accounts to Apple Mail, you can toggle between them using the sidebar in the left.
BEFORE YOU START: To set up Apple Mail with your email, you need to know your POP or IMAP email server settings and ports. To find them, go to the Email Setup Center and write down the information that displays under Email Server Settings.
If you cannot log in to the Email Setup Center, it's possible that you have an Office 365 email address. If you do, see Setting up Office 365 in Apple Mail.
Apple Mail 10.9 and greater will not set up POP accounts with our Workspace Email. If your account does not offer IMAP support, we recommend upgrading to an account that does, using another email client, or using our Web-based email.
To Use Apple Mail with Your Email
    Launch Mail.
From the Mail menu, select Add Accounts.
Select Add Other Mail Account, and then click Continue.
Complete the following fields, and then click Create:

Complete the following fields, and then click Next:

    Account Type
    Select IMAP.

Enter the incoming IMAP server name listed in Email Setup Center.

    SMTP Server
Enter the outgoing server name listed in Email Setup Center.
    User Name
    Enter your email address.
    Password
    Enter your email account's password.
That's it. Go ahead and check your email. If you don't see any messages, click Get Mail. To make sure you can send messages, try composing an email and sending it to yourself.
If you're not receiving email messages or you can't send messages, see Troubleshooting Apple Mail Setup. Don't worry. There are a few things that can happen during the setup process. We'll help you investigate and fix them.

  • Can't set up Mail with Exchange

Searching has shown that there seem to be a lot of problems with Exchange and Mail, but I wanted to check and see if there's anything else I can do to fix this. My Exchange server works fine with the iPhone and with Entourage, but with Mail it will never sync. I don't want Exchange calendar and contacts, just e-mail. I'm not sure if I'm setting it up wrong - there doesn't seem to be a place to put the domain name? Could that be a problem, or is this just a hopeless quest? I have heard that Snow Leopard should support Exchange, so maybe I will just wait it out. I'm just trying to get switched away from Entourage altogether and I don't like having to use two different e-mail programs. It just seems odd that it works so easily and well on the iPhone but not on a Mac.

Same problem here. I've used Mail with Exchange for quite sometime but recently I can't send using the SMTP server. I can receive and even send to other email addresses on my Exchange network. But not to the outside world. Tried every configuration and authentication possible. Now I read (here in the discussions) that Mail 3.x (I'm using 3.6) is very unreliable with Exchange. I think we are desperately awaiting Snow Leopard. I will certainly not install Entourage on my Mac again that's for sure. I'm resorting to web access for my Exchange folders now.
Anyone have any solution to this?

  • Can't set up mail with yahoo email address..

I apologize if this has already been asked, but in setting up Mail, i keep getting an error while trying to set up my yahoo account. Will the mail program work with web based email? if this has been asked before, please direct me.
    Thanks!
    -Ryan

    Hi Ryan
Mail will not work with Yahoo's free email service, but will work if you have the paid Yahoo service. This is because the free service does not allow mail access by POP mail clients.

  • Setting up Mail with College E-mail

I've been trying to set up my college mail with the mac mail program. I type in the imap account as mail.uncw.edu, the smtp as smtp.uncw.edu, and it never is able to recognize the server. Could the problem be coming from the fact that my school uses outlook mail if you were to just go to the mail.uncw.edu web site and attempt to check it?

As a UNCW alumnus, I really wanted to help you out. The only thing I could find out (through a google search) on how to set up UNCW email on your Mac was a mention on this page:
    http://www.uncw.edu/itsd/macsupport.htm
I don't know how current the page is, but they state that:
+Entourage 2004 is the first native OS X Email client that allows Macintosh users to connect to the UNCW Exchange server, on or off campus.+
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I set up Mail with an optonline account?

I have an optonline.net (Cablevision) webmail account. It deletes any sent mail that is more than 30 days old. I want to sync my account up with Apple Mail so that I don't lose any messages anymore. For whatever reason it's not working. I just get this spinning thing next to my Sent messages folder. I have 2 messages sitting in my Outbox, but they never went anywhere. The message next to my Inbox says "Unable to Receive Mail. There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “optonline.net” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “mail.optonline.net” on port 995 timed out."
    Can anyone help with this?

The information you need is there; different versions of Mail may ask for it in a different order but you still should be able to get it set up. It may be even more automatic than Optimum's instructions; with my provider (Comcast) all I have to do is put in my email address and password and Mail finds the appropriate settings.
If you continue to have problems, I'd suggest you contact Optimum's tech support. They should be able to walk you through setup and help you sort out any problems. I'm suspicious of the port number being used for the outgoing mail as reported in the error message you gave in your first post - 995 is non-standard for POP mail - but perhaps that's what they do indeed use.
    Regards.

  • Setting up mail with iCloud

    Several questions:
I am getting an iPhone 5 and am also going to tether it to my iMac to get my email and for web browsing,
especially for larger files.  I am dumping my current DSL provider as a result.  The DSL provider
has all email run out of Google's gmail.
    1) If I get iCloud email, will this download into the Apple mail on my iMac, and do I have to delete
the messages from iCloud mail after getting them on my iMac?
    2) If I don't get iCloud email, am I stuck having to go to a web site to get my email?

iCloud email is IMAP, which means that your Mail application reads the messages from the server. Therefore if you delete a message from your Mac, it will also appear deleted online at icloud.com and on your iPhone.
Your signature says you have 10.5.2 - is this correct? (If not please update your signature to prevent confusion). If it is, you can access email on an existing iCloud account (you would have to set the account up on your iPhone) though no other iCloud facilities will work. The setup method is described, with illustrations, here:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

  • Problems setting up Mail with iCloud

    Hi,
I am running os version 10.9.5.  I have a mac.com apple id. I set up iCloud a long time ago with this id and was prompted to create an iCloud.com address which I was able to do successfully.  I never used it or logged into iCloud since.  Everything was syncing fine with my devices but at some point Mail stopped working (or may never have worked).  I did not notice since I was not using it.
I decided to try and fix it but am not having any luck.  I searched and followed support documents and still nothing.  I have sent test emails to both the mac.com and iCloud addresses and delivery fails with unknown or illegal alias for both.
I have signed out of iCloud on all my devices and deleted the iCloud account from Mail.  When I try to re-create the email account I can successfully log into iCloud with the mac.com id and Contacts, etc set up fine.  When I check the Mail option, I get prompted to create a new iCloud email address.  If I use my current one, it says it already exists.  When I try to create a new one and click create, it acts like it is checking, returns with no error but doesn't do anything else.  It just sits at the prompt waiting to check the new address again.
I have tried everything I can think of short of contacting apple directly.  Any help with this very frustrating issue would be appreciated.  Thanks!
Edit: funny thing is, replies are going to be sent to the address that doesn't work.

  • Cannot set up Mail with GoDaddy Account, what am I doing wrong?I

I searched the correct way to do this through GoDaddy, my hosting service and got these directions, which I have tried, but didn't work.
*To Set Up Apple Mail for SMTP Relay
    1. From the Mail menu, click Preferences.
    2. In the Preferences window, click Accounts.
    3. In the Account window, click Account Information.
    4. From the Account Type list, select POP.
    5. In the Description field, type a name for the account.
    6. In the Email Address field, type your email address.
    7. In the Your Name field, type your full name.
    8. In the Incoming Mail Server field, type pop.secureserver.net.
    9. In the User Name field, type your user name (your full email address).
    10. In the Password field, type the password to your email account.
    11. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) field, type smtpout.secureserver.net.

    15. In the User Name field, type your SMTP user name.
    16. In the Password field, type your SMTP password.
    17. Click OK.
Obviously, I'm connected to the internet...
I tried doing this through POP and IMAP, there is an error message saying unable to connect. What can be done to make this work?

the 3535 is not gonna work...the 110 will work...I have been dealing w/ godaddy.com .mac and mac support for 5 months with compatibility. It is the worst.. mac says they never heard of godaddy and godaddy had me run a trace route so then I had to deal w/ my isp for no good reason since other browsers could reach godaddy so it is not my stream.. It is the worst. These are suposed to be the easiest and most seemless systems and they cannot sync. I use firefox to get to go daddy on my macbook and it is as if I am using dial up. I am ready to just cancel .mac which is really another headache to learn..and godaddy and just move everything over to a company that can handle everything. My web business has been on hold since January. It makes no sense. I got the mac so I would not have to deal w/ the windows registry error answer.. now godaddy tells me they are built for windows.
There is no winning at this. I have spent countless hours on phone support after spending countless hours researching the answers only for all support lines to tell me i can "go to...website for more info..." it is as bad as using windows.
    Very dissatissfied,

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to pay for the Yahoo Mail Plus for this to work. (Yahoo used to do this for free but they make their money from the adverts you look at when checking your web-based email now).
    Then follow these instructions (link).
