Setting up Oracle Server for Home???

hello
Please would someone help me, I recently installed in Oracle Developer Suit on my machine, and so far the Developer icons and ohters show up .. but cannot seem to connect to the main Developer suite program frm Start>Programs>Oracle>Oracle Developer Sute....
here is where the big problem is and that is how do I set up a server at home for it, as the college has a server for their oracle program. Without Oracle running i cannot really do my assignment two of using Oracle itself to produce a database through the program.
I want to ask would the Net manager allow me to set up and test the server this way? note that i have followed the instructions of my lecture handsouts taht he put on blackboard, the thing is taht he has not yet shown me how to set it up and get it to run? so I was thinking do any of you people know how to do this?
id b great if you could post some instructions ro guidlalines or email me the screen dumps of how i can clearly set up a server for my program so i can log in with a username and passworld and connect string @ home.
email is [email protected]

Bo,
If you have the means, I would recommend placing spatial indexes on a separate physical device from data and other indexes. This is an extension of the data separate from indexes rule of thumb.
Matt.

  • Mac OS X SL Server for Home?

Im considering setting up a server at home for my family due to everyone uses each computer and all accounts are different per each machine. What I would like to do is setup a what I think is called a "Portable Home Directory" allowing each user (family member) to login to any mac they want and still have the same account be used rather then several accounts across the network.
    My questions are:
    Would a mini be sufficient?
Is there a SL Server 10 license available?
And would server allow me to do this? (one account across home network?)
What are the instructions to do this if a mac mini is sufficient?
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for double post not sure where this falls under
    thanks
    Estrates

Would a mac mini be sufficient for say 5-10 users/clients?
Likely yes, as the previous reply cites.
Do look for the newer Mac Mini as the processors are faster and (particularly) you have FireWire 800 as an expansion path for external storage (RAID, data archives, or otherwise).
Where it's an option, 802.11n 5 GHz dual-slot WiFi and Gigabit Ethernet are the way to go.
Get a decent Less-Interruptable Power Supply (LIPS) for the box, too.
Right now the load would be almost internet only.
That's almost always going to be limited by the bandwidth of the box. Most anything in the recent arsenal of computers is going to be able to feed low- to moderate-range Internet connections just fine, and with plenty of headroom. (But then an internet connection can also be anything from, say, a 512 Kb DSL link to a seriously-fast SONET. And a Mini might have a little trouble keeping a SONET busy.)
And start reading the manuals. Running a server requires substantially more thought than running a client, and somewhat more effort over time to maintain it.

  • Want to set up my server at home for simple purposes.

    Hi,
I am an IT student and recently took a course in Windows Servers in which we were to over the duration of the course setup and configure a server using Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
I was so excited to get to work with this kind of stuff that I went straight to ebay and bought a used Dell 1U CS24-SC JSD2  with two Quad core Xeon L5420 2.5GHz 12MB L2 Cache 1333Mhz processors, Dell S45 Mother board on intel 5100/ICH9R chipset with
ASPEED AST2000 onboard graphics and 8GB PC2-5300P Ram and two 250GB 7.2K SATA drives with an additinal two blank caddies to fill.
I have run the gauntlet setting it up as a double for the machine I am supposed to be configuring in the lab at school, just to make sure I could do the classroom exercises efficiently. Now that I am done with the course, I would like to put this beast to
work as place to experiment with building web sites, as a source for media and data from remote access. I will soon be taking courses some 40 plus miles from the house which is a bugger of a turn around time of I forget a flash drive. So remote access would
be nice, and to be able to host media throughout my home network consisting of two IMac's, two IPad Air's an MSI netbook running linux Ubuntu and a Dell notebook pc running Windows7  as well as two Apple Tv's.
One of my biggest things is this: I know when setting up the class machine I was required to setup Active Directory Domain Services. Since essentially the Server and the Dell notebook are the only Windows devices on the network, is it necessary to run Active
Directory Domain services to be able to use web server and provide a remote connection? It would be nice to either run a protected site that I can access my data files for school that I built myself, or be able to remote connect to the server and access from
    the web at school.
If I am not mistaken, because of the proprietary nature of both the Windows Software and the Mac OS's, those devices will not communicate properly, also because of the same thing, the linux netbook is probably out of the question because neither Windows
or Mac play well with Linux and the Apple Tv's are just dumb terminals.
I admit I am extremely new and dying to learn more. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

From what I understand you want to build websites and connect to your server remotely... totally possible.  Active directory isn't a requirement for any of that (but you can do it anyways).
Since essentially the Server and the Dell notebook are the only Windows devices on the network, is it necessary to run Active Directory Domain services to be able to use web server and provide a remote connection?
No.  As Rhys mentioned you dont need Active Directory to connect to your home server (or home computer).  To do this you can open and forward ports from the router connected to your modem to your home computer.  The port depends on the software
that you use, like you found 3389 is for Windows Remote Desktop.  There are other tools to do a similar task and may support multiple operating systems, such as VNC.
It would be nice to either run a protected site that I can access my data files for school that I built myself
You can do this.  Again, active directory isn't needed.  On your server install the IIS role.  Then allow port 80 on your router to your server.  Make sure your server is kept up to date with patches, antivirus wouldnt help (MS has a
free one i think for 2008), etc etc.  Then you start building your own sites.
Well.. openning port 80 on your router if you want people (including yourself) outside your home to access the site.  I'd get it working internally first, then subject yourself to the attacks of the world :)
    Happy coding

  • Lion Server for Home Use

    Hey world!
I have five Macs of various types and ages spread throughout my house.
I've set up Lion server on a 21' iMac to manage the five apple computers on the home network. I must say that although I read some bad publicity, the iMac is absolutely steaming along! (I also increased to 6Gb RAM).
The way it's all configured (remember I'm a home user and not that IT literate) is that the ADSL modem feeds into the WAN port on my Time Capsule; I have an ethernet connection to the computer with Lion Server software, and WiFi feeds to the computers and four iPhones. I had an IT savvy buddy come over and set up the IP addresses for the ADSL and the server - all works well but he is actually anti Mac (refusing to know the intricacies) which makes the Mac nuances difficult to explain (again remember I'm not IT literate apart from the basics).
Instead of having to download software and firmware updates five times, I'd like to do it just once.
Can I configure Lion Server so that for software upgrades, it only downloads once to the server and then I can either distribute it or store it for use?
All I'm doing is trying to set up a secure and efficient home network. if anyone else has more tips on using a server in a home environment I'd appreciate your input.
    Kind regards,
    Namph

Go to Server Admin (installing it via Server Admin Tools if you need to) > select the server > Settings > Services and enable the Software Update service and go from there.

  • Public Oracle Server for Learning

Would there be any public Oracle server accessible thru iSQL*PLUS so that user can play around with (for learning).

Actually, I've installed 9iR2 in my home PC. The problem is the library's firewall restricts access to private IP addresses (they dont want people to play online game and view adult sites). I just want to use the library's browser to access some publicly available installation.

  • Lion Server for Home use reality check

    Hi All,
as many others I had the best intentions buying Lion Server for my home network (5 Macs, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones) to manage everything.
It was destined to be a central server for user management, configuration management, home directories, file server, software update server, web server and Time Machine server and possible VPN gateway to my home network.
I did not intended to use  as Address Book, iCal, Mail server as I use iCloud. I just don't see the point of iChat, Podcast, Wiki server for my home use.
Anyway the bits I had to abandon so far are:
configuration management - Profile Manager works only sometimes and is sluggish to say the least
home directories - the home sync just doesn't work for Mac libraries such as iPhoto and iTunes
software update server - worked, broke, fixed, worked, broke, fixed, ... going away with Mountain Lion.
What works for me is user management, file server, web server and Time Machine backup, haven't gotten around to test VPN yet.
Given that Mountain Lion is coming next month and presumably I'll have to buy new license for the Server version I am not sure if it's worth it.
As I see it using a plain vanilla Lion or Mountain Lion system I can still do file server, web server and Time Machine backup. What I'd lose is the user management and I am not sure about VPN on a non-Server system but not really important. User management is a one time task for 5 Macs that's it.
Would be interested to hear opinions from you folks about pros / cons of using a plain Lion or Mountain Lion OS X for server tasks vs Server version?
    Anything I am missing here?
    Thanks
    Andy

most osx server issues are usually DNS problems
if that is not correct practically nothing else will work correctly
That's probably true but also within that lies a major problem how this is positioned "The Server for Everyone". I am in IT and know what a DNS is. Most home users would NOT have a DNS running as it's not necessary not even talking about SSL certificates. I think this is a major problem here that it market incorrectly.

if your trying to have portable home directories and having iphoto library sync'd
    I don't recomend on wireless , even on a wired 1gb network it's slow
use WGM to skip iphoto or be prepaired for a long wait
It's not so much a network bandwidth problem but the fact that home sync doesn't work for package files such as iPhoto, etc. Many people have confirmed that that home sync actually corrupts those files.

trying to get the same funtionallity via terminal.  plus the posiblity of a OS update
that may blow all your finely crafted terminal work all away.
Don't intend to do terminal but for example take "File Sharing". It's an Server option but every Mac also has file sharing under the "Sharing Settings". As far as I can tell the server actuallty is just an overlay over the Mac sharing option because if I define a file share it's also updated in the sharing option.
Same thing goes for the Webserver. Hence I am thinking that Server really only is a central console for some basic services that can also be available by using standard OS X functionality.

  • Windows server for home user

    hi
i have windows 7 on my desktop and a home network included cellphones, laptops and TV. i want to manage my network with active directory. i'm going to install windows server on my PC and my questions is:
does the windows server at home is good?
of course i'm a .NET programmer and i think programming in windows server better than in windows 7, am i right?
    regards

    Hi,
Most of PC level computer not certificated by Windows, so it can’t supported by Microsoft. But personal experience is you can run the server system on it, you can try to install
the Server 2012r2 then install all the role in the Hyper-V guest vm, it will give you more flexible.
And consider there often have more heterogenous operating systems in the home device, you can consider setup the Windows System Center Configuration Manager it have the heterogenous
    system manage ability.
    The related information:
    Download Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

  • How to set a Proxy Server for appletv

The network I'm on requires that I set a Proxy server to get out to the internet.
Is there anyway to specify a Proxy server for AppleTV?

    Hi Red-Baron,
The Apple TV does not support Proxy Server configuration (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305010). An alternative is to enable internet sharing on a computer and have the Apple TV connect to that computer.

  • Server for home-use

I was able to get my hands on a older hp model rackmount (dl380 G3 Series) for free. It has 6x Ultra3 SCSI 15k drives, so it's a bit loud but the noise doesn't bother me. I plan to use it for a rsync host mainly, so I can sync from PC to laptop very easily (and my wife wants to be able to sync all of our family pictures/videos to her netbook from her PC). And also to pull all my movies from my roku & old neuros. I will find plenty more uses in the future. I was just wondering if this might be a little bit overkill for home-use. I figured since I got it for free, I want to put it to use. Like I said, I dont mind the noise and I can keep it cool enough, I am just worried about the power usage. How much power does a server use... when it's not being "used" And what about power configurations, for people who have the same deal as me. Because I wont be using it 24/7.

I have a couple of these exact units for home... They are loud and expensive. I don't have exact figures, but I can't afford to run them. I bought a rack-case and built a custom "server" instead. The DL380's are now at work instead (where I don't pay the electricity bill )
Thanks. I wonder how it would be with green SATA drives and some power config tweaks. For now, I'll stick with my backup drive in my desk drawer and rsync for my laptop. Thanks all.

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be. I've created a test domain through GoDaddy of "company2.com" with an MX record of "mail.company2.com" pointing at the IP address of the xserve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
