Setup of support structure for J2EE systems running on Oracle App Servers

I'm not sure if this is the best place to pose this question, but I can' really think of anywhere better. Apologies to anyone who may be reading this and thinking 'what does this guy think he's doing!'
Over the last two years, we have been implementing a number of J2EE systems for a large insurance company. The way we have been supporting these systems, is by making a number of senior staff available to field any issues. We are talking about DBAs, Oracle App Server admins, and senior Java staff (generally the same individuals as the Oracle App Server admins). Now, we do have an on-call support roster, but because our developers are generally not environment savvy they are not suitable for on-call support. They know the code inside out (for their particular application) but have not been exposed to the environment and possibly other applications running there in.
So since it is not feasible, or fair, to ask developers to go oncall, it is left to us poor saps (generally myself and a DBA in the States). This problem will only get worse as time goes on: the more applications added to the environment, the more complex the support requirements, the less available developers are to do frontline support.
So my questions are:
Has anyone faced this kind of a problem before?
What kind of an individual is most suitable for frontline support?
What structures could be put in place to address this problem?
What tools do people use to help them in frontline support of their J2EE systems?
In my mind, a suitable candidate needs, at the very least the following skills:
Knowledge of Unix commands
Working knowledge of Oracle AS, various OC4j instances, config files, deployment structure etc.
Good, not necessarily expert level, of Java. Someone who can make sense of a stack trace at least.
Awareness of the enterprise, not just the application servers but all constituent parts in the application i.e. database, ldaps, external hosts etc.
Thanks much in advance to anyone who can offer any advice on this topic.

Jason,
You said:
So since it is not feasible, or fair, to ask developers to go oncallActually, in my experience, developers are always "oncall". In the company that I work for, a developer can be contacted whenever and asked to help with some support issue.
Good Luck,
Avi.

  • An EFFECTIVE development directory structure for J2EE platform?

    Hi, here we r talking about deployment environment more than development

    Create a web-inf folder at the same level of src and
    jsp folder inside src
    i mean
    /build.xml
    /src/
    /src/java/<package>/...../*.java
    /src/demo/<package/...../*.java
    /src/test/<package>/....../*.java
    /src/jsp
    /web-infSo, would you put in /src/jsp only the *.jsp?
    And what in /WEB-INF ? What woud you put there? Would you do something like:
    /WEB-INF/web.xml
    /WEB-INF/src/<package>/..../<my_servlets_and_j2ee_stuff>.java
    /WEB-INF/classes/<package>/..../<my_servlets_and_j2ee_stuff>.java
    In this manner sources and classes are in the same tree, it does not seem very clean to me, expecially if you consider that probably I must have a "test" directory to unit test some j2ee stuff (as for the j2se stuff in "src"): how would you do that?
    Is this directory structure anyway what you meant or not?

  • Error "No extraction structure for event I3" running set up 2LIS_17_I3HDR

    Hi, Experts:
    I am trying to activate and run set up datasource for PM 2LIS_17_I3HDR, so that data can be extracted from R/3 into BW 3.5 system.
    In R/3 environment, we have 2 clients. client 200 for configurations but has no data, and client 230 has data but can not change configurations.
    I have done the following in client 200:
    - Activated datasources for for PM 2LIS_17_I3HDR in RSA5.
    - Made selection in RSA6.
    - Activated extract structures and datasource for application 17 in LBWE and also ran job control. Now I can see the extract structures for application 17 are active in client 200 only, but inactive in client 230. I tried to turn then active in client 230 but got error "Client 230 has status not modifiable".
    - I assume I should run set up tables in client 230 because it is the client with data in tables? But when run set up in OLIIBW, I got the error "
       No extraction structure for event I3: Messages active
       Message no. MCEX106
       Diagnosis
       You called the setup for the extractor structures of application '17' (Plant Maintenance). However no extractor structure is active for event I3 (messgaes).
       System Response
       Data for event I3 is not transferred to the BW interface.
       Procedure
       First activate the desired extractor structures for application '17' using the Customizing Cockpit and then start the setup again."
    - I can not manually activate extract structures in client 230 because it is not modifiable. I tried moving transports, the path is not set up. I see extract structures for other applications like 11, 13 are active. So I guess there may be other ways to activate the extract structures in client 230.
    - I also tried to run set up in client 200, which has extract structures for 17 in active status. But got the same error as client 230.
    Would anyone please help me with what to do to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Jenny

    Hi, thanks for the reply!
    Just update for what we did to solve this. Both clients are for development. Client 200 is only for configuration but no data. Client 230 has data but not modifiable. Usually, when we create a structure, table, program, or active anything in 200. We will see it in 230 right away without transports. But this is not the case for activating extract structure for datasource from Business Content. We end up having Basis guy manually activate the structure for us directly in client 230 with transaction LBWE. That worked.
    Thanks,
    Jenny

  • Do older versions of Oracle Application Server support Containers for J2EE?

    Do older versions of Oracle 9iAS support Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE (OC4J)?
    I went to the our companies application server directory. I don't see an oc4j or j2ee directory.
    Thanks,
    Merced

    How far back are you looking? ANd what, in particular, are you looking for ...
    The history of the Oracle 'internet service' that I remember is roughly:
    Web Server 2.1 (mid 1990s)
    Web Application Server 3.x (mid 1990s)
    Oracle Application Server 4.0.x (late 1990s)
    Oracle Internet Application Server 1.0.x (2000)
    Oracle Application Server 8i (basically 1.0.2.22.2.z)
    Oracle Application Server 9i (9.0.2, 9.0.3)
    Oracle Application Server 10g (9.0.4, 10.?.1)
    Oracle had an initial J2EE container [attempt] with 4.0.x but that never really took off. I think that was really around the time of the last beta revisions for the JSP spec, and that's left us with the legacy of JServ apps. Seems like you would see OJSE, Oracle JSE (Java Server Engine?) in the docco and path.
    IIRC, the current OC4J lineage started with around IAS 1.0.2 and has moved forward on what is now OC4J. There were some opportunities in the early days to improve consistency in the naming and directory structure areas. That has some lineage from Ironflare's Orion engine and so occasionally you see 'Orion' in the messages.

  • License Audit and System Measurement for J2EE Systems

    Hello,
    I'm working on our annual license audit at this time, and for the first time the measurement plan includes non-ABAP systems:  Enterprise Portal, Adobe Document Services, NWDI, and even the Java developers' NWDS installations.  I'm fully conversant with the use of USMM and SLAW on the ABAP side, but I have no idea how to measure the J2EE systems, and I am unable to find any documentation on this.  I did find one powerpoint presentation that talked about measuring Portal and Duet systems, but it's only valid for 6.40-based systems, and we are a 7.00 shop (NetWeaver 2004s).  In any case, when I tried the suggestion in the presentation, it simply didn't exist for our Portal or ADS systems on 7.00.
    Does anyone have any suggestions for how to proceed?
    Thanks,

  • Steps for Creating a Report in Oracle Apps

    I need the steps for creating a Report 2.5 in Oracle Apps.
    Please let me know the steps involved in detail
    Regards
    Choudary

    First you create the report using reports 2.5. (You need to refer Application Developer's User Guide to understand Apps standards for customization)
    Then register the report in Apps:
    1) Define the executable
    2) Place the executable in the appropriate directory (You need to refer Apps installation guide to find the directory structure for placing reports)
    3) Define the concurrent program (Pay attention when you define program parameters and value sets associated)
    4) Attach your report to the request group attached to your responsibility
    5) Run the concurrent program using SRS (you will not see the report when you open Submit Requests Form, if you do have permission)
    The above procedure is applicable if you are defining the report directly in your instance. If you are using chain link, then you may have to migrate the objects appropriately.
    Some of the above activities are usually done by System Administrator and users are not given permissions.

  • NoClassDefFoundError for Java Concurrent Program in Oracle Apps

    Hi,
    I am accessing the Oracle Apps application which is installed in local server(Within the network).
    I am trying to execute Java Concurrent Program in oracle apps (in Windows XP Professional). I did the following.
    1. Created the concurrent program executable with Execution file name
    as AvailableProg and Execution File Path as
    oracle.apps.fnd.cp.request (this is where AvailableProg resides)
    and Method as Java Concurrent Program.
    2. Created the concurrent program and set the Options as -cp JAVA_CON.
    3. Created a environment variable JAVA_CON (In Windows XP) with the
    values D:\apps.zip and
    D:\oracle.apps.fnd.cp.request.AvailableProg.class.
    4. Registered the concurrent program.
    5. While I submitted the request I got the following error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
    oracle/apps/fnd/cp/request/Run.
    Can anybody help me in resolving this issue?
    Is there any documents available in executing java concurrent programs?

  • :system.last_record in Oracle Apps Forms

    Hi all,
    My requirement is when I give order number in header level in Oracle Apps Form, i want the lines to be displayed in lines block.
    I have written the query and a cursor.
    The Query returns 6 lines when passing the Order Number.
    But when i use the following code in forms, the form returns only one line in the lines block.
    BEGIN
    first_record;
    for i in xx_cur
    loop
    :REQUEST.CUSTOMER_NUMBER := i.party_number;
    :REQUEST.CUSTOMER_NAME := i.party_name;
    If :system.last_record = 'TRUE'
    Then
    Exit;
    ELSE
    next_record;
    End if;
    end loop;
    END;
    If i use the above code only the first line gets displayed in the form.
    If i didnt use the system_last_record condition the 6 lines are displaying.
    --If :system.last_record = 'TRUE'
    --Then
    --Exit;
    --ELSE
    next_record;
    --End if;
    end loop;
    END;
    Y the :system.last_record is not working.
    Please help me to solve this issue.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jegan

    i'm assuming this is a non-database block? if so, you don't need FIRST_RECORD and :SYSTEM.LAST_RECORD is always true ...
    try
    BEGIN
        FOR i IN xx_cur
        LOOP
            IF :request.customer_number IS NOT NULL THEN
               CREATE_RECORD;
            END IF;
            :request.customer_number := i.party_number;
            :request.customer_name := i.party_name;
        END LOOP;
    END;

  • EA1 - SQL DDL Tab not working for 10.2.0.3 Oracle Apps DB

    I just downloaded the EA1 SQL Developer 1.5.0.51.70 for evaluation purposes. I am connecting to various types of databases - all databases are version 10.2.0.3.
    When I am connected to an Oracle Applications 11i database (10.2.0.3 version) as the apps user, then select a table, and then click on the SQL tab - I get a message Generating DDL and then the errors:
    o.d.db.DBUtil No more data to read from socket
    o.d.r.utils.DBObject Could not get schema Object:java.sql.SQLException:OALL8 is in an inconsistent state
    When I connect to one of our other in-house (non Oracle Apps) Oracle database 10.2.0.3 I am able to view the tables and the DDL in the SQL tab.
    Is there a reason why I am unable to view the DDL from the SQL tab for Oracle Apps databases

    If you get the same error when running the equivalent DBMS_METADATA through SQL*Plus (rather than through SQL Developer), I would assume that it is a problem with DBMS_METADATA in the database - this can be fixed (based on earlier posts, such as Re: ORA-06502 error on SQL tab by reinstalling DBMS_METADATA by running $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catmeta.sql.
    If it works in SQL*Plus, then I would say it sounds like an issue with how SQL Developer is connecting to the database - simply based on the "no more data to read from socket".

  • Patch for  Template type 'excel' in Oracle Apps R 12

    Hello,
    I don't see the option to upload the excel template in my XML Publisher responsibility. Can any one suggest which patch should be applied to see the excel in the drop down of template type in XML Publisher responsibility
    Thanks,
    Sridhar

    Since this depends on your current patch level I would highly recommend you to
    open a ticket with Oracle Support to tell you exactly which patch your environment needs.
    A good starting point though is the Note ID 1138602.1. Which gives you all patches for
    BIP 10f, 11g, etc standalone or with EBS or other oracle apps.

  • Creation of solution for J2EE system

    Dear All,
    We need to add our EP7 (JAVA) in solman as new solution kindly suggest.
    Thanks,
    De'

    Hi Surojeet Dey,
    Use this note: "Note 987835 - How to define Solutions in SMSY for Diagnostics".
    Steps:
    1. SMSY->Landscape Components->Server->Right Click and Create new server.
    2. SMSY->Landscape Components->Databases->Right Click and Create new database.
    3. SMSY->Landscape Components->System Components->Right Click and Create new system component. Enter System Component name(eg., EP7_J) and choose Type as "Java".
    4. SMSY->Landscape Components->Systems->Right Click and Create new system.
    Enter a System name(eg., EP7_S); choose Product as "SAP Netweaver" and Product Version as "SAP Netweaver 7.0(2004s)". Save the changes.
    5. Now select the created system(EP7_S), Go to tab "Selection of Main Instances" on the rightside.
    Check the check-boxes of "Enterprise Portal" for "Relevant" as well as "System Component" and enter the created java system name(in this case EP7_J). So you linked the java system to EP system.
    6. Next, Create logical component and assign this logical component to the EP system.
    7. Finally create a solution and assign this logical component to this solution.
    You can use SAP tutors also to create Systems(SMSY), Logical components and Solution.

Another option is to try the following code for your viewer code:</p><p> </p><p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#3f7f5f"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #3f7f5f">// ****** BEGIN CONNECT CRYSTALREPORTPAGEVIEWER SNIPPET ****************<span>  </span></span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">{</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#3f7f5f"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #3f7f5f">// Create the CrystalReportViewer object</span></font></p>  <p style="margin-right: -0.75in" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">CrystalReportViewer crystalReportPageViewer = </span></font><strong><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#7f0055"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #7f0055; font-weight: bold">new</span></font></strong><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black"> CrystalReportViewer();</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New""> </span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#3f7f5f"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #3f7f5f">//<span>    </span>set the reportsource property of the viewer</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">IReportSource reportSource = clientDoc.getReportSource();<br />crystalReportPageViewer.setReportSource(reportSource);</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New""> </span></font></p>      <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">// set viewer attributes<br />crystalReportPageViewer.setOwnPage(</span></font><strong><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#7f0055"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #7f0055; font-weight: bold">true</span></font></strong><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">);<br />crystalReportPageViewer.setOwnForm(</span></font><strong><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#7f0055"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #7f0055; font-weight: bold">true</span></font></strong><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">);</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New""> </span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#3f7f5f"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #3f7f5f">// Apply the viewer preference attributes</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#3f7f5f"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #3f7f5f">// Process the report</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">String output = crystalReportPageViewer.getHtmlContent(request, response, application); </span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">out.print(output);</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="black"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: black">}</span></font></p>  <p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Courier New" size="2" color="#3f7f5f"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Courier New"; color: #3f7f5f">// ****** END CONNECT CRYSTALREPORTPAGEVIEWER SNIPPET ****************<span>  </span></span></font></p>  <p> </p><p>Regards,<br />Sean Johnson (CR4E Product Manager) </p>

  • Crystal Reports for Eclipse issues running under Oracle Jdeveloper(10g)

    Hi  All,
    I am having issues trying to get a small application that I developed in eclipse (CR4E)that uses Crystal Reports to work with Oracle's JDeveloper OC4J embedded server.  I can run the application fine and when I try to view  a report I get a partial report rendering and then get the following Exception:
    Also while inserting on the page Showing error on the page

    Can any boby tell me another way to integate Crystal report with Jdeveloper
    Sincerely,
      Amol

    Something is writing out to both the JSP Response Writer and OutputStream.  Writer is for text and OutputStream is for binaries.
    This typically happens, especially on WebSphere and Oracle OC4J, when exporting a Crystal Report in the viewer.  The DHTML view is HTML text, but the exports are binaries.
    I'd recommend putting Crystal Report Viewer object in a Servlet - there you'd have full control over what goes in Writer and OutputStream.  Once in the Servlet, ensure you don't write anything out yourself, but let the viewer have full control over what goes out.
    Sincerely,
    Ted Ueda
