Shadow generation in the PDF Language.

I am working on an application that needs to create PDF files from vector-based imagery.
There appears to be an extension to the language (which may be Mac-specific) that allows
paths to have drop-shadows; however, I can find no discussion of this feature anywhere.
I have checked the PDF reference, the addendums and waded through countless web
pages trying to find more information.
I can create files on the Mac which use the extension through Quartz 2D.  Please forgive
my ignorance in some of these matters, but I believe the relevant data from the PDF file is
the following (much is culled for simple viewing):
6 0 obj
<< /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text /ImageB /ImageC /ImageI ] /ColorSpace << /Cs2 8 0 R
/Cs1 7 0 R >> /ExtGState << /Gs1 20 0 R >> /Font << /F1.0 13 0 R >> /XObject
<< /Im2 11 0 R /Im4 16 0 R /Im3 14 0 R /Im5 18 0 R /Im1 9 0 R >> /Properties
<< /Pl1 21 0 R /Pl2 22 0 R >> >>
endobj
21 0 obj
<< /Type /PropertyList /Style << /Type /Style /Subtype /Shadow /Offset [ 10.22150
-17.19072 ] /Radius 7.543859 /ColorSpace 8 0 R /Color [ 1 0 0 1 ] >> >>
endobj
I am guessing this "/Shadow" and its parameters control a vector-based shadow.
This is clearly not Mac-specific.  Viewers, even on the PC, recognize this and render
the file appropriately.
Although the example above is condensed, essentiallly it is drawing a filled rectangle
which has a red shadow beneath it.
Can someone give me some information on this feature, or at least point me in the right
direction to using any API to manufacture it?
Thanks,
Phil

Thank you for the prompt reply.
So the values for Offset and Radius are communicated to some other object in the file
that renders the shadow from that?  They can be changed textually (yes, I am aware that
isn't recommended), but trivially changing say the "10.22150" to "40.22150" does translate
the shadow appropriately.
I could post a more complete example; however, I am pretty sure the PDF content operations
are encoded.  This file is the result of a "Save as PDF" from the generic Print dialog in Mac
OS X and I don't think I have detailed control over that process.
It sounds like I need to learn more about the PDF content operators and how to use them
to manufacture something like a shadow.  I didn't realize they were that powerful.  I am
guessing it is doing some sort of filtering with the intensity of the effect being handled through
"Radius".

  • How to find the pdf language?

    Hi,
        My  plugin application written in VC++ using acrobat SDK 7 now need to support the japanese document.How can I find the languages present in the given document programatically.
    Any help would be appreicated...
    Thanks in advance..

    A PDF doesn’t necessary have a language.  If there is a primary language, it can be found in the Lang key in the Catalog dictionary.
    However, you may have a multi-lingual document, where languages are specified via tagging in the structure tree.

  • Transparent shadow crossing over the image in pdf output

    Hi Folks,
    In recent days, we are frequently facing problem in using of tiff format image in InDesign. In pdf output, there is some transparent shadow crossing over the image. The problem occurs in ps to pdf as well as export pdf settings. The issue was not happened for the past 5 years.
    If it is a reproducible error, we could find the root cause of the problem. But the same issue does not occur if we create the pdf again. Please see below the differences in viewing of actual image & problematic image and suggest how to resolve this and why it happens.
    Issue 1:
    Actual view of image shown in left side; Corrupted view of image shown in right side
    Issue 2:
    Issue 3:
    Now I have suggested my team to convert all tiff images to psd image format. I really don't know whether it helps. All I need is to know the root cause of the issue. Anybody please suggest would be really helpful.

    @Tyson:
    In Issue 2, horizontal green color shading is crossing above the play/pause icon in right hand side of the image.
    In Issue 3, I have displayed the screenshot of the image placed in InDesign to show the original view of the image. But the problem shows in right hand side that is pdf output view. You can see the horizontal green color shading in 1st image and light grey color shading (at the top of "NO" text) in 2nd image.

  • How to place stamp that will change position depending on language version of the PDF

    Hi there,
    For all of our publications (several types of instruction guides), we are trying to find a solution to place two small black stripes (about 8 mm) at the foot of each PDF. These black stripes have to define what language and what model you have in your hands. After cutting the paper at the printer, only 2 mm of those bars will remain visible. On the left half of the PDF we want to place a language bar indicating what language the publication is. The position for that bar will be unique (English = 10 mm from left border of page; French = 8 mm from left border; and so on until 20 languages).
    And another bar will have to be place on the right half of the page, indicating what model it is. This position will be again unique.
    We know it's possible inserting stamps on a final PDF. But the key for this job is being able to place them at the exact position. And also creating stamps that can be selected by the operator depending on the languages and models we will send to print (let say we created final PDF for the model B, in German; so the operator can open final PDF in ACrobat, stamp the whole document with the stamp "German", and then once more with the stamp "model B").
    Does anybody have a tip how to approach this?
    Thanks a lot!

    Have you considered using the watermark tool to add this information instead of a stamp? You could store all the watermarks in separate files and control the exact placment.

  • Setting the reading language in PDF programmatically

    Hi, I have searched the forums and didn't find a reliable post on how to set the reading language for accessibility in a PDF document programmatically. Maybe using a pdfmark or specifying XMP metadata or postscript code, javascript or any other way. Any ideas will be appreciated.

    Thanks, this looks very promising. I am using FrameMaker and the FDK. Is
    there a way to specify the
    Lang key using  pdfmark or XMP? I could also embed postscript code if I
    knew what the correct code would
    be. I don't know much about PDF/PS and any help will be appreciated.

  • "Content generation error. Failed to Export the PDF file"

    Building a multi-folio in InDesign 6 Folio Builder V30. Received "Content generation error. Failed to Export the PDF file" on several of the spreads. I have tried reducing the original pdf files sizes, but that did not help.

    I'm very new to DPS so I hope the following description makes some kind of sense.
    My magazine is in the process of doing trial runs for an iPad edition. I'm setting some templates up for us to work off so the process from magazine to iPad will run a lot smoother month to month.
    So far I've set up some dummy stock pages in an InDesign CS6 document, currently 15 pages long.
    All images are linked and all fonts have paragraph styles applied to them.
    I'm at the stage I want to check the document on my iPad to test run font sizes and their legibility.
    We have successfully been able to export the document as a jpg file but we really need the PDF format. When attempting this we get the above message.
    Sonia.

  • CS6/Yosemite: in Safari when opening a PDF and want to save the pop-up is english while the system language is german

    Hi,
    I installed end November last year on my new iMac the CS6 Master Collection. The language and country ist german. All menus and titles are correct. In Safari (8.0.2) PDFs are shown with Acrobat instead of the preview. When I want to save the PDF the pop-up window where to save the file is in english instead of german. How can I set it to be displayed in german?
    All menu-items are german, clicking the floppy-symbol will open the shown window. The list-items on the left side are in german but all labels, buttons and titles are english.

    If you are printing to physical printer from Safari : Use Reader print button from Reader toolbar
    If you want to save a PDF from Safari to your local : Use Reader Save button from the Reader toolbar.
    PS: if you have PDF in read mode the  hover the mouse at the bottom of the page and the floating Reader toolbar will appear.
    Please let me know if this solves your issue.

  • Is the Greek language available to the: EXPORT FROM PDF?

    Is the Greek language available to the EXPORT FROM PDF?

    The files that are exported require the fonts to be on your system. Acrobat can not extract fonts, but uses system fonts. If you do not have the fonts one your system, you will probably have substitute fonts that may look crazy. Why not just try it?

  • Error during generation of the WSDL:  BUILD FAILED java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sun/javadoc/Type

    When I create an EJB Transport Business Service, after selecting the jar that has the EJB 2.1 artefacts (Remote, Home, etc) the oepe plugin fails and can't continue.
    As I understand it seems that there is a problem with the classpath of ant build.xml  that oepe creates inside folder /tmp/alsbejbtransport/ to compile the bs and generate the wsdl. I checked if tools.jar is in the classpath (in eclipse) and is included, so I can't figure out wich is the problem.
    I found this in Oracle, but not helps solve the problem:

  • Cannot open the pdf when using the xml publisher to generate rtf report

    Hello Everyone,
    I followed the below link to generate a pdf using xml publisher in OAF.
    http://apps2fusion.com/at/ps/260-integrating-xml-publisher-and-oa-framework
    When i try to save the pdf and open it, i get the below error:
    Adobe Reader could not open the pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged(for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
    Below is the code in CO.
    public void processFormRequest(OAPageContext pageContext, OAWebBean webBean)
    super.processFormRequest(pageContext, webBean);
    OAApplicationModule am= (OAApplicationModule)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    String event = pageContext.getParameter("event");
    if("GenerateReport".equals(event))
    // Get the HttpServletResponse object from the PageContext. The report output is written to HttpServletResponse.
    DataObject sessionDictionary = (DataObject)pageContext.getNamedDataObject("_SessionParameters");
    HttpServletResponse response = (HttpServletResponse)sessionDictionary.selectValue(null,"HttpServletResponse");
    try {
    ServletOutputStream os = response.getOutputStream();
    // Set the Output Report File Name and Content Type
    String contentDisposition = "attachment;filename=EmpReport.pdf";
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition",contentDisposition);
    response.setContentType("application/pdf");
    // Get the Data XML File as the XMLNode
    XMLNode xmlNode = (XMLNode) am.invokeMethod("getEmpDataXML");
    ByteArrayOutputStream outputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    xmlNode.print(outputStream);
    // System.out.println(outputStream.toString());//Testing the output by printing the contents in the outputstream.
    ByteArrayInputStream inputStream = new ByteArrayInputStream(outputStream.toByteArray());
    ByteArrayOutputStream pdfFile = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    // System.out.println("language is "+pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().getLanguage());
    // System.out.println("country is "+pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().geCountry());
    //Generate the PDF Report.
    TemplateHelper.processTemplate(
    ((OADBTransactionImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getAppsContext(),
    // APP_NAME,
    "PER",
    // TEMPLATE_CODE,
    "Emp_Template",
    // ((OADBTransactionImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().getLanguage(),

    // ((OADBTransactionImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().getCountry(),
    "United States",
    inputStream,

    pdfFile);
    // Write the PDF Report to the HttpServletResponse object and flush.
    byte[] b = pdfFile.toByteArray();
    response.setContentLength(b.length);
    os.write(b, 0, b.length);
    os.flush();
    os.close();
    pdfFile.flush();
    pdfFile.close();
    catch(Exception e)
    response.setContentType("application/pdf");
    throw new OAException(e.getMessage(), OAException.ERROR);
    pageContext.setDocumentRendered(false);
    Any suggestions on this would be great!
    Thanks
    Kumar

    Below is the code. Can you change so that that the output can be seen in HTML? I checked the language, country etc and they are fine.
    super.processFormRequest(pageContext, webBean);
    OAApplicationModule am= (OAApplicationModule)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    String event = pageContext.getParameter("event");
    if("GenerateReport".equals(event))
    // Get the HttpServletResponse object from the PageContext. The report output is written to HttpServletResponse.
    DataObject sessionDictionary = (DataObject)pageContext.getNamedDataObject("_SessionParameters");
    HttpServletResponse response = (HttpServletResponse)sessionDictionary.selectValue(null,"HttpServletResponse");
    try {
    ServletOutputStream os = response.getOutputStream();
    // Set the Output Report File Name and Content Type
    String contentDisposition = "attachment;filename=PrintPage.pdf";
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition",contentDisposition);
    response.setContentType("application/pdf");
    // Get the Data XML File as the XMLNode
    XMLNode xmlNode = (XMLNode) am.invokeMethod("getEmpDataXML");
    ByteArrayOutputStream outputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    // xmlNode.print(outputStream);
    // System.out.println(outputStream.toString());//Testing the output by printing the contents in the outputstream.
    ByteArrayInputStream inputStream = new ByteArrayInputStream(outputStream.toByteArray());
    ByteArrayOutputStream pdfFile = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    // System.out.println("language is "+pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().getLanguage());
    // System.out.println("country is "+pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().geCountry());
    //Generate the PDF Report.
    TemplateHelper.processTemplate(
    ((OADBTransactionImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getAppsContext(),
    // APP_NAME,
    "PER",
    // TEMPLATE_CODE,
    "Emp_Template",
    // ((OADBTransactionImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().getLanguage(),
    "en",
    // ((OADBTransactionImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean).getOADBTransaction()).getUserLocale().getCountry(),
    "US",
    inputStream,
    TemplateHelper.OUTPUT_TYPE_PDF,
    null,
    pdfFile);
    // Write the PDF Report to the HttpServletResponse object and flush.
    byte[] b = pdfFile.toByteArray();
    response.setContentLength(b.length);
    os.write(b, 0, b.length);
    os.flush();
    os.close();
    pdfFile.flush();
    pdfFile.close();
    catch(Exception e)
    response.setContentType("text/html");
    throw new OAException(e.getMessage(), OAException.ERROR);
    pageContext.setDocumentRendered(true);

  • How do I create a PDF from ID, so that when the PDF is opened in Reader, the text is editable?

    Three different members of Adobe Support have unfortunately been unable to resolve this problem so I am pinning all of my hopes on my fellow users! Please Help!
    I have been sent a PDF by my client (created via their previous agency) which when opened in Reader (not Acrobat) enables me to edit the existing text (in the existing fonts, granted only Helvetica) and re-save it as a hi-res PDF.
    I have tried virtually everything to get this to work without success, I can create 'editable fields' but this deletes the existing text and inserts a blank box over the top which I can type into with the default 'Times'.
    What will ultimately happen is that I will design the documents in English and then they will be uploaded to an ftp for download at various offices around the world. Therefore they need to translate what we have written but retain the same document design.
    I know this is possible because I have the PDF in front of me, I also know that PDFs in essence weren't designed to be editable but apparently it is now achievable and very useful if I can get the blasted thing to work
    Very many thanks, your opinions will be most appreciated!
    Regards
    Adamskidog

    Well, everything in those PDFs were form fields. You can make form fields in Acrobat - and then you can right-click on 'em and change their appearance, whether or not they'll accept rich text input, whether or not they'll scroll, and so on. It could also be done in LiveCycle Designer, for what it's worth. I wrote a now-obsolete post about this in response to yours before Mike showed up with this video.
    Probably most of your work on your designs in InDesign would need to be trashed; you'd need to rebuild the whole thing in Acrobat or LiveCycle. I have to say that, unless your targeted documents are extremely simple, that this is one of the worst document translation workflows I've ever seen in the last fifteen years. It might work - I'm trying to keep an open mind, here - but if you have any non-Latin-script languages in your target list, or if print reproduction is what you're after, or if you're expecting tracking revisions to the translations to be anything but a nightmare, I would suggest that you test this method inside and out before progressing any further.
