Shared Folder Setup

Hey,
I need to share a folder on my desktop machine for access on my Mac Mini which is networked using Airport.
I access the folder from the mini by clicking this link:  afp://192.168.1.47/ , which I found in the sharing prefs,
and it loads the folder on the mini. Problem is I can't find a way to make an alias of it on the mini
to access in the future without having to use the link each time.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Carl

I agree with Mandy, but I think she made a typo in the permissions for HR
\\serverName\Company Data\
Enable ABE here (or on entire volume if your on an older server)
Share level permissions - everyone gets full access
NTFS permissions - everyone gets read access to this
folder only (in advanced settings)
\\ServerName\Company Data\HR Docs\
Create an AD group such as "Sec_ServerName_CompanyData_HRdocs_RW"
Or use a naming convention that tells you:
its a security group (be more specific if you're a big company - doesn't sound like)
where the share is (what file server)
where the file folder is that these permissions apply to
what type of permissions are included
Give this group modify permissions to that folder (NTFS permissions), AND
Deny this same group from deleting this folder (this
folder only - in advanced settings)
will help with those clumsy & shaky mousers, trust me
Create a test user and try it out

  • How to setup a custom background in network shared folder Server 2012

We have a Server 2012 acting as Domain server, and also has a shared folder. The client computers are Windows 8.1. Now I need to set up a picture as the background of the shared folder, and I want all client computers to see that picture when open it. How
    can I do that?
I tried this solution but did not work:
Create a desktop.ini fine inside that folder and put following contents,
    [AveFolder]
    IconArea_Image="C:\images\folder1.jpg"
Once it is done reboot the machine. This folder will be visible with the sepcified image,
    Please help me, thanks guys!

    Hi,
As you said it will not work since Windows Vista. I've seen some third party appliations could help change the background of a shared folder.

  • Shared Data Folder Setup

Hello. I have one Mac that has multiple login accounts. I want all accounts to access one folder that they all have Read/Write access to. -So that when a document of some sort is created in this shared folder, all other accounts can edit it and make changes.
I've tried the Shared Folder and Public folders, but the documents become a Read Only. Permissions to those folders are set to Everyone. But each document inherits the permissions of the user that created it.
    Any suggestions?

    dear yohomie
i have the same issue. I run a small office with 2WINXP and 3 Macs and we decided to have a Mac Mini as fileserver storing the files in /users/Public/.
As you rightly remarked we found out that files inherit their users permissions. What a drag?? I mean what does a PUBLIC folder serve for if each file is only accesible by its creator?
Everyday I set the permission on the PUBLIC folder for "read/write/everyone, include all enclosed items to make the files readable again. However this is far from userfriendly.
Does anyone understand how to set the Public Folder up to have everybody in a local network create, access, change, delete files?

  • Library problems with two XP user accounts accessing music in shared folder

I'm sorry if this has already been answered; I have not been able to find the answer. My wife and I each have a different user account on the same Windows XP machine. I recently combined our iTunes libraries into the shared folder on the computer. I correctly pointed iTunes (in each of our accounts) to the correct location for the music files. I did an "Add Folder to Library" to make sure each account had all of the music. When I did this, I got duplicate listings of all of the songs that also had exclamation points. When I did a "Get Info" on these songs, I found that each song was correctly pointed to the correct file location. I laboriously deleted each "exclamation point" song one at a time (in each account). Now the problem I have is that whenever my wife or I close iTunes and the other person opens iTunes in their XP user account, none of the songs can be found. The best way I've been able to resolve this is to (unfortunately) delete the entire library, and do an "Add Folder To Library" to find all of the song locations and include all of the songs back into the library. Surely this can't be how this is supposed to work.
    So, my questions are:
    - Do I need to add new albums / songs one at a time to avoid duplicates (rather than use the "Add Folder" for the entire iTunes music folder again)?
    - How do I setup iTunes so that my wife and I can each go into iTunes in our seperate XP accounts and have all of our songs right where we left them (WITHOUT having to delete the entire libary and "add" again.)
FYI: I'm using the latest version of iTunes and (again) I'm using Windows XP.
My wife and I really want to each get a new iPod Nano, but if I can't trust iTunes... forget it.
    THANKS!!!

I have this setup at working. Two accounts with all files stored on a shared folder, mine is a network drive. Each account has its own library and can access all files. We also use one iTunes account for rare purchases.
This is how did initial setup:
Make a folder in the shared folder. I called mine itunes.
This is where iTunes stores its files.
With second account point iTunes at shared folder.
Import the folder you created earlier.
This worked for me without duplications. The only complication is that when importing from CD with one account the other doesn't know it. The other account must do import on the folder for the CD just imported. We keep track of this with a spreadsheet updated to show which account has which CD files.

    Hi @Username57 ,
I understand that you are having issues setting up the network folder. I will certainly do my best to help you.
I have provided a document with the steps for setting up the scan to network folder.
Scan From the Control Panel (Including Scan to Email, to a PDF, and to a Network Folder) for HP Lase...
It is usually a issue with the Network Path for the network folder created.
Create a folder anywhere on the computer.
Right click the folder and left click properties, select the Sharing tab, click the Share button, select who you want to share the folder with or everyone. On the same Sharing tab copy the Network Path. (example \\envy1730\users \Envy\desktop\networkfolder
In the embedded web server for the printer go to the Scan tab, select network folder setup, paste in the path for the network folder. Go through the wizard.
If those steps don't work then follow steps 1, 2, 3, to resolve this issue to try and get the network folder and path.
Step one: Make sure that the computer user account is password protected.
1.Click the Windows icon, then click Control Panel.
2.Click User Accounts, then select the account you used to log into the computer.
3.Click Change your Windows password, then find the user account you used to log into the computer.
•If the user account is password protected, continue to the next step.
•If the user account is not password protected, click Create a password for your account to create a password, and then continue to the next step.
Step two: Define the network location
1.Click the Windows icon, then click Control Panel.
    2.Click Network and Sharing Center.
3.In the View your active networks section, click Public network under your network name. The Set Network Location window opens.
4.Select Home Network or Work Network, then click Close.
Step three: Make sure that the network sharing and discovery options are correct
1.Open the Network and Sharing Center window.
2.Click Choose homegroup and sharing options.
3.In the Share libraries and printers section, select Documents.
4.In the Other homegroup actions section, click Change advanced sharing settings.
5.In the Advanced sharing settings window, make sure that the following network options are turned on:
    •Network discovery
    •File sharing
•Public folder sharing (read and write access)
    •Password protected sharing
    6.Click Save changes.
7.Your computer network is now successfully set to complete the Scan and Fax to Network. Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Wizard.
One user on another post had to do the following:
There was a problem in the "advanced sharing settings window". They turned it off, the option which is after the 128 encryption, I mean the "password protected sharing".
Please let me know the outcome.
    Happy New Years!
    Thank You.

  • Saving to shared folder on server: Item [...] can't be copied because there isn't enough free space – even though there is!

    Hi all,
I have a strange error with my mac mini mavericks/server setup. Everything is updated to the latest software. I have a promise pegasus R4 over thunderbolt connected as my data harddrive-raid and use my server as a filesharing setup (I also use other services such as webserver, timemachine, dns, open directory, vpn, messages, caching).
I have about 10 users connected to this server that authenticate through their respective user accounts on the server and are all in the same group. Recently users startet complaining about a disk full error showing up in finder (or any other program they use), when they tried saving stuff on a shared folder on the server. I am not really sure what this is. The strange thing is that the error is not consistent, meaning some users can save and others cant, even though they are all in the same group and that group has read and write privileges according to the file sharing settings. When I use finder to propagate the rights on the shared folder, sometimes that helps and all of the sudden the user can save his file again. Also I have found that the user can save very small files, but not larger files (>1mb). The harddisk containing the shared folder has still several TB free (its the promise pegasus R4) and I can save files on it from some other computers or from the server itself…
Basically I have no idea what is causing this and I don’t really found anything alarming in the logs so far. I would appreciate any kind of hint, how to come close to what is causing this.
    Thanks and all best

BUMP, anyone? I still have this problem...

  • Network Folder Setup - "No Write Permission". Windows Vista.

    Product: 8600 N911g
I am having issues in creating a network folder to scan to my computer. It responds ‘No write permission’
**NOTE**Before I allow you to continue reading, I need to first know to I need to create a password in my user account, or turn off UAC to create a scan network folder on my PC? If so, then that is what I need to do to correct this issue.
Steps I have performed in attempting to accomplish this task:
In Windows to create shared folder:
    1) Created folder.
    2) Open folder properties, under 'sharing' tab, selected 'Share' button, then selected 'Share' button.
    3) A dialog window appears and states 'Sharing items', and when it is complete, it states "Your folder is shared. You may e-mail these links to notify people that you have shared these files, or copy the links onto the Windows clipboard, where you can paste them into any program you choose.”
    4) When I select ‘Done’, it returns to the folder properties, and states in ‘Network File and Folder Sharing’ under ‘Sharing’ tab under ‘Network Path’: ‘Not Shared’.
**I don’t understand that it just said ‘Your folder is shared’, then under Network Path is stated ‘Not Shared’.**
    5) Since in stated ‘Not Shared’, I selected ‘Advanced Sharing’, checked ‘Share this folder’ box, and under ‘Permissions’, checked ‘Full Control’ box.
    6) Now it states Shared, and under ‘Network Path’ states the location: ‘ \\ADMIN-PC\ScantoDV9825 ’
In the HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g, Embedded Web Server to add network folder to scan to:
    1) Opened ‘Scan’ section by clicking on the tab ‘Scan’. Under ‘Network Folder Setup’, the ‘Network Folder Configuration’ clicked on ‘New’.
    2) Entered data for the following fieldsTEP 1 OF 4: Display Name: ‘Scan’, Network Path: ‘\\ADMIN-PC\ScantoDV9825’. Left User Name and Password fields blank. STEP 2 OF 4: Left PIN fields blank. STEP 3 OF 4: Did not make any changes, used default settings.
    3) In STEP 4 OF 4 when I click on Save and Test, it returns with the message ‘No write permission’
How do I resolve this issue of ‘No write permission’?
    Thank you.

    Hi Robert,
First ensure the permissions are also set correctly by right clicking the shared folder, and then open the Security tab.
If your user name is not listed as Full Control click the edit button, add your user name and check the box for as Allow full control.
If that does not help, follow these steps in Windows Vista to make sure that your computer is configured to allow network sharing.
Step one: Make sure that the computer user account is password protected
Click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel .
Click User Accounts , and then select the account you used to log into the computer.
Click Change your Windows password , and then find the user account you used to log into the computer.
If the user account is password protected , continue to the next step.
If the user account is not password protected , click Create a password for your account to create a password, and then continue to the next step.
Step two: Define the network location
Click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel .
    Click Network and Internet .
Click Network and Sharing Center .
Click Customize next to Your Network . The Set Network Location window opens.
Select Private , click Next , and then click Close .
Step three: Make sure that the network sharing and discovery options are correct
Open the Network and Sharing Center window.
In the Sharing and Discovery section, make sure that the following network options are set to On :
    Network Discovery
    File Sharing
    Public Folder Sharing (password required)
    Printer Sharing (password required)
    Password Protected Sharing
Your computer network is now successfully set to complete the Scan and Fax to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Wizard.

  • Shared folder read-only for other users

We setup a new iMac with three accounts for members of the family. Two have admin rights. We installed Quicken Essentials 2010 for Mac, and put the Quicken data file in the Users/Shared/Quicken folder. Everything worked great for user #1 who copied the file to the shared Quicken folder.
User #2 (also an admin) was not able to open Quicken, as an error stating the file was read-only. I checked permissions, and set user1 and user2 with read/write and everyone with read/write. Basically, all permissions on that data file are read/write for everyone.
That still did not work. Then, I set user2 as the owner. Now, user2 can use Quicken and the file, but user1 cannot. Same error.
How do we get it so that files in the Shared folder are really shared and accessible to everyone?

The solution that I discovered to work: Place your quicken data file(s) on an external drive (or create a partition if you only have access to a single hard drive) and have permissions on that drive (o volume) set to "ignore ownership on this volume" It works for me. Both accounts can now access my single quicken data file. To set the permissions on a drive/volume, select the drive or volume, choose "get info" from the file menu and at the bottom of the get info window mark the box "Ignore ownership on this volume".

  • Can't see "Shared" folder

I've followed the steps of tuning on Home Sharing on my two Mac computers (27 inch iMac and a new Mini Mac), but the "Shared" folder isn't displaying in the lefthand menu section of Itunes. I have a local WiFi network setup and working using Airport Extreme. I can surf the web okay on either machine.
But not sure what to do next with regards to this problem.
I also purchased an AppleTV 2 about 6 months ago, and have never been able to use Home Sharing on that either. I've tried numerous times to work out what the problem is but no success.

I finally solved the problem on my system by switching both computers on AirPort Extreme from the "Guest Network" to the WPA Personal Network.

  • ...connect to a shared folder on a MAC with director 11???

    Hi All,
I developed a project a few years ago that work as follows.
This was designed to work on Win XP, using Director MX2004
    Server Setup
All the media files where installed on a server and the folder they resided in was setup as a shared folder.
    Workstation Setup
A projector was installed on a workstation PC, along with the director projector, a txt file was install, the txt file contained the unc path to where all the media files resided. i.e. all director & video file etc.
The projector file would read the text file, get the unc path, and open the appropriate dxr file.
    This worked really well.
My question is, now I'm upgrading the software to Director 11, it is required to work the same way on MAC OSX. The only difference to the system will be that the media files will reside on a MAC server and the workstations will be MACs (Intel MACs running the latest OSX).
How can you connect to a shared folder on a MAC with director 11?
Its not '\\share_name'... should 'afp:\\share_name' work???
I keep getting the can't find 'myfile.dxr' alertbox
I hope I've explained myself well enough.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

Using a similar technique you could write the name of the mounted volume (just the name in this case, not the full path) to a text file and open it with a separate AppleScript app containing the applescript below. Note that any files you have accessed from the volume will probably have to be unlinked before Finder will be able to eject it.
    on open (theFile)
set theVolume to readFile(theFile as text)
      if (theVolume is "") then
        return false
      end if
      try
        tell application "Finder"
          eject theVolume
        end tell
        return true
      on error
        return false
      end try
    end open
    on readFile(theFileName)
      try
set theFileRef to (open for access file theFileName)
      on error
        return ""
      end try
      try
        set theText to (read theFileRef)
      on error
        set theText to ""
      end try
      close access theFileRef
      return theText
    end readFile

  • Cannot access a shared folder in TC with Windows XP

I have a Windows XP machine that has a network share to the time capsule. Basically, when I click on it, the folder opens as expected and displays the same contents that I see on my mac. But when I click on a shared folder within the TC folder, there are no contents in the folder - but actually there are hundreds of files within that folder.
I installed Bonjour on the XP machine, but it appears to be a printing application or something? plz help - it will save me headache.

How did you put this shared folder onto the TC?
If you copy a file/folder to the TC manually (drag&drop), any computer with access to the TC will be able to read it. I don't think an XP machine will be able to use a folder that was backed up to the TC using Time Machine.
If you manually copied the file/folder, and still can't access it from the XP machine, make sure that you've set the "workgroup" in the TC setup to be the same as the workgroup on the XP PC. Default for XP is Mshome. Also make sure that sharing is set to "read/write".
Have you tried connecting to the TC by clicking my computer/my network places/windows network/workgroup/time capsule, rather than using a network share?

  • How can I write a document to a shared folder ?

Hi, newbie developer in workbench here...I'm using Output service to generate PDF.
_ The foundation service "write" seems to be useful just to write document in the livecycle server; how can I reach shared folder on another pc ?
_ Does somebody has examples that teach how specify destination URI of Output ? I wanna write to : nfsmount/myfolder
    Thanks in advance !

We used the WRITE FileUtilsService with this input :
    Pathname Pattern (template)
    {$/process_data/@remotePath$}{$/process_data/@pdfName$}.pdf
    Document (variable)
Pdfdocument (a document object containing the pdf to write)
with this setup you can write to a shared folder in the server running
workbench, you can't reach external resources so no problem relative to security
    and user.
then we use a java class running on the server to move the pdf from the local
    folder to the final location.

  • Time capsule as shared folder, time capsule as shared folder

How to use the recently installed time capsule as a shared folder for my other mac book and PCs at home?
    Thanks in advance

    1. Make sure it is setup with SMB names.. ie TC name.. Hard disk name.. wireless names should all be short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    2. IN the file sharing section make sure the workgroup is set correctly.. generally WORKGROUP.
    3. Turn on the guest account to read and write access. Assuming this is not a security issue for you.
    4. On the PC install bonjour for windows or airport utility for windows. (you said PC but I presume that means windows).
    5. In windows explorer type in the address or name of the TC.. ie
\\TCName or \\TCIPaddress clearly replacing the generic with the actual name or IP.
    6. Create a new folder from windows..
    7. Load your stuff into it from either the Mac or windows..

  • Connecting to A Windows XP Shared Folder

I looked around and I must not be good at searching because this seems like it had to have been asked before. so my apologies up front if it was.
We recently moved and I lost my shared folder connection from my Mac to my windows xp machine and I haven't been able to reset it. I found articles describing how to connect, but I keep getting an error.
    http://www.mac-connect.com/winfrommac.php
When I do that, my mac can not find my pc on the network whether I browse, use ip address or computer name. It looks for a while and then I get an error message that says "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in smb://ip address could not be read or written. (Error Code - 36).
I have disabled all firewalls I know about and set up the "My Documents" folder to share. But I still can not figure it out. I have Windows OS X (10.4.1).

    Hi
I feel for you - I've been having the same problem except that I AM able to connect to my Mac via my PC - just not the other way around.
The really annoying thing is I'm not interested in connecting from my PC to the Mac, I just want to connect from the Mac to the PC.
There is an answer in Mac help, but it hasn't solved my problem. I'm not an IT expert at all, so I haven't the faintest idea what the solution is. Mac help says this occurs when upgrading from Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.4 but I've always had 10.4 and for me it only happened after I uploaded security updates - although I'm not sure which update caused it.
This is from Mac help, maybe it will work for you:
    Symptoms
Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Samba or Windows server
After upgrading from Mac OS X 10.3.x to Mac OS X 10.4, you may get an error message when you try to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. A Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server includes servers operating on Microsoft Windows and other operating systems that use Samba for SMB/CIFS services.
If the connection is unsuccessful, the following error message may appear:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in smb://........ could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
If you check the Console (/Applications/Utilities/), you will also see this error message:
    mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed
    Resolution
This error can occur if your Mac OS X 10.4 client is trying to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server that only supports plain text passwords. If you do not see the above message in the Console, you are not experiencing this issue and should try normal troubleshooting
Unlike Mac OS X 10.3, the Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client by default only supports encrypted passwords. Most modern Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers use encrypted passwords by default, while some Samba servers might have to be reconfigured.
You should consider contacting the owner or system administrator of the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server to which you are trying to connect and encourage them to disable plain text passwords and start using encrypted ones. If the server cannot be reconfigured to support encrypted passwords, you can configure Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client to send plain text passwords.
Warning: If you configure your computer to allow connections to Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers using plain text passwords, when you attempt to make any connection to such a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server, your password will be sent "in the clear". This means that it is possible for someone who is monitoring your connection to see your password. This could lead to someone compromising the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. We strongly recommend that you configure your Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers to exclusively use encrypted passwords.
Follow the steps below to configure your computer to use plain text passwords to make SMB/CIFS connections when the specified Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server does not support encrypted passwords. (You must be an administrator to do these steps.)
Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related error messages open.
    Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
Enter your password when prompted, then press Return again.
You should see an empty file and a "New File" notice at the bottom of the pico window. If you do not see the "New File" notice, this file already exists.
Enter the following into the file so that it appears as follows:
    [default]
    minauth=none
Save the file (press Control-O), press Return, then exit pico (Control-X).
    Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
    Restart your computer.
