Sharing Data Files

I have 2 identical servers (i.e. Server A & B ; Oracle 9i/Solaris 9) and a seperate storage which could be mounted to A and B (one server at a time; no clustering).
A contains an archive-enabled instance where its datafiles, log files, control files, archive files and initsid.ora reside on that storage. Is it possible that if A went down we could start an instance on B using the same files (resided on storage)
Thanks in advance

We have some Linux cluster systems working that way, unfortunately I can't do tests at the moment (production systems), but you should be able to do what you say. The only difference should be that the cluster does it automatically, while you should do it manually, but I don't see reasons why you shouldn't be able to do that.

  • MYOB AccountEdge - Sharing data file with remote Windows PC

I use MYOB AccountEdge in a Mac environment at my office. Bookkeeper uses MYOB AccountEdge in a PC environment. We both would like to be able to have access to my MYOB data file. Simultaneous access to the file is not a requirement. We're not in the same office, so one of us would have to access the file remotely. I have Mac OS X Panther Server installed on my server. The MYOB folks told us that, in mixed environments, the data file would have to reside on a Windows server in order for both the Mac and PC to have access to the data file. They said that the Windows PC would not be able to access/use the file if it resided on a Mac server. Bookkeeper does not have a windows server. Before I go out and buy a PC to act as a server for the data file, wanted to know if the MYOB folks knew what they were talking about. I know it's their product, but over the years I've found some companies who make both Mac & PC software to be sometimes mistaken about the capabilities of the Mac platform.
By the way, I do have a static IP address and broadband internet access. I would think that Mac OS X server would allow a PC to access and use the data file without any problems. Any advice/help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi -

  • Shared Data Partition + Lion + Snow Leopard - What files go where?

I have partitioned my new internal drive into 3 (which is currently in a enclosure).
The 1st Partition reserved for Lion
The 2nd for reserved Snow Leopard
And the 3rd reserved for a shared Data parition
I'm not enirely sure how to divde up the files. What should be put on the Data parition?
And how to direct each OS parition to access the shared data partition?
I would appreciate advice and example(s). Detailed information is always welcome.
    Thank you.

I really don't know, and don't know if there's a list anywhere of Mac apps.  Mail seems to change with every release (and even some "point" updates).  I think Calendar is one, too.
This list of 3rd-party apps is unofficial, but seems pretty reliable as far as what will run where: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
As you'll see, it's mostly geared towards Lion vs. Mountain Lion (and in a few months, will be Mountain Lion and Mavericks).
You'll probably have to use some trial-and-error, and/or contact the makers of the apps you use.
I am not familiar with using any kind of software as a Virtual Machine how would this work?
I'm not very familiar with it, but you install 3rd-party software that lets you run one OS within a different one, rather than having to boot into one or the other.  Basically, it puts a Virtual Machine folder containing one whole OS installation on the disk of another;  it runs concurrently with the other OS, in a separate window (or multiple windows for different apps, I think).  There are some downsides, especially performance, but a lot of folks do it, usually to run Windows, but some to run Snow Leopard on Lion or Mountain Lion.  There may be some restrictions on the Snow Leopard license, too -- Apple didn't allow that for OSX at all for a long time, except for the Server product.  I don't know what the rules are now.
Parallels and VMware are two I see mentioned often.  I seem to recall reading about a free one, but as it's pretty complex software, I'm a bit skeptical.
I don't know where else to point you, but that should get you started on research.  Look for those apps and/or Virtualization Software to find more.
    Good luck!

I have an IMAC and a IPAD 2 can data, files and Programs, be shared or tranfered?

The Mac uses Mac OS X. The iPad uses iOS. These are two different operating systems and the apps written for one will not run on the other. Some Apple and 3rd party apps have been developed in both OSes. These apps can usually share data and files across the two OS platforms.

  • Working with multiple users and computers, but shared data

Sorry if this is posted in a poor place, I'm not sure where the best place is. This is sort of a general questions.
For a long time, my wife and I have had either one computer, or two machines but one has definitely been just a terminal. We've basically set up all of our data to be one one primary machine, and if we want to view/edit that data we have to use that machine.
We just got a new MacBook Pro and I would like to be able to use two machines as equals. Sadly, this idea of multiple computers, with two users and some shared data is really giving me difficulty. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to best manage things like:
Synchronizing portions of our contact list (We share about 50% of the combined library -- we don't have to share all though).
How to manage iPhoto so that we can each have access to the photos. As an added difficulty (or maybe this is easier?) my Wife just wants to have access to the pictures for viewing and sharing on Facebook/Picassa/etc. I am the only one who wants to edit, correct and cull our library. That said, I always edit when I first put the data on the machine, and almost never again; so it would be fine to have one (or both accounts) set up as view only for the iPhoto data.
How to manage iTunes so that we can each have access to the music. As a super awesome bonus, it would be great if we could have three libraries: His, Hers and Shared. Maybe as much as 30% of our music library is similar, the rest just gets in the way.
What is the best solution people have found for calendars? (I'm thinking two separate calendars, and we each subscribe to each others iCal feed)
Mail.app and bookmark synching is not really a problem for us.
    Two extra points:
    * One machine is portable, and the other isn't. Ideally, when the laptop is out of the house, both machines should still have reasonable access to the shared data. That is: Just dumping things in the shared folder won't work because when the laptop is out of the house we will be disconnected from the source data.
    * We just got a second iPhone. This means that both of us will be taking photos/video separately and trying to synch back to the master data store.
    * Basically, I'm trying to minimize data duplication as much as possible, and just synchronize the systems to each other.
Thanks a ton in advance. If anyone has any suggestions at all, I would love to hear them. Including "This is in the wrong forum, go ask here instead..."

So you have a desktop Mac and a laptop Mac, right? Two user accounts (and a third admin account) on each computer, right?
I profess that I haven't tried this, but here is how I would approach your problem:
Sharing Music and Photos between multiple user accounts on the same computer:
See if http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=194992 and http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=510993 provide any useful information to assist you in this endeavor.
    Sharing across multiple computers:
Turn on file sharing on the Desktop (System Preferences > Sharing). Now you can mount the Desktop as an external drive on the laptop's Desktop. Copy the music and photo folders across. Will take awhile to do the first time. Then, for future use, get a copy of the donationware CarbonCopyCloner or equivalent. You can use CCC to selectively sync specific folders from one computer to the other. There may be a hassle with digital copyright issues on music and movies, though.
    Calendars:
As you have suggested yourself, publishing yours and subscribing to hers is probably the best way to do it, on the same computer. Across computers, syncing with CCC or equivalent would probably be the way to go.

  • Questions on organizing/sharing music files on 3 PC networked drive

I just added 1Tb network drive to 3 pc home network... I am planning on moving my iTunes music folder from the older, smaller network drive. I exceeded the 160GB size of the old drive when converting all of the WMA losselss files to Apple lossless while maintaining the old WMA files(I still think the Windows Media Player system is superior). With the new addition to our network, I am planning on the 3 pcs sharing music files... (my wife has been using iTunes for a while, I have just recently went over to the dark side)
What is the best way to organize the files??
-How to shuffle all without the folder of Christmas & Holiday music playing.
    -Segregate each users individual files.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated, I know it would save a lot of time and pain instead of the trial and error method.

Thanks, Jason & Mike. This is how I resolved the problem. Turned out the disk with the data was in NTFS format. Neither my eMac nor my wife's Carbon iMac (prehistoric, in other words) was able to read it, on repeated attempts. In process I discovered (to my surprise) that the external hard drive attached to my eMac (a 320 Gig My Book) was formatted in FAT 32 format, and that the PC laptop (Thinkpad) read from it, and wrote to it, without any problem. (Is FAT 32 less than optimal for use with a pre-Intel Mac?). So I just copied the needed files from the NTFS disk to the FAT 32 disk, via the Thinkpad. When I reconnected the FAT 32 drive to the eMac, it turned out that it was easy [with some fiddling] to put the titles of the new music into the iTunes Library, without having to copy the music itself into iTunes. Making playlists does still seem to have to go manually. Sometimes the "New Playlist from Selection" option automatically gives a name (the original name) to the album from which the music came, sometimes it doesn't. Rationale not clear to me. Other problem: often the sequence is jumbled (this is after I added the whole collection of folders containing music to my iTunes Library in one fell swoop). Usually it was possible to correct this by copying track names for albums one album at a time from the external HD (in Columns view, selecting all the tracks in each folder simultaneously) directly into the playlist; the playlist name then always had to be copied or typed in separately. I don't know if I'm missing an easier route. Also, I see that I have version 4.7.1 of iTunes - I'll download a newer version! Don't know whether newer version will affect what I want to do in a positive sense.

Yes, sharing a TM disk is a bad idea, and disks are cheap enough so that you don't need to.

  • How do i move a data file from my pc to my ipad

How do I move a data file from my computer to my ipad? It is my product catalogue and it would help if it were on my ipad.

Plug the iPad into iTunes and you can use file sharing to move it into an app that supports file sharing and that document format.
    see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094
Or, use an online storage service (iCloud, dropbox, box, google drive, sugarsync, etc) and upload the file to that.  Then on the iPad, from within the app you plan to use the file with, link to that service and download the file.
The app will again have to work with that file type, and support the particular service you used.

  • Sharing Data & Printer Through Airport Extreem

My daughter is home for the summer and we are trying to get her MacBook working with the other computer in the house.
WIFI -- no problem. She is set up and going
Printer -- Half way there! We have a HP LaserJet P2015d printer plugged into the airport base.
I just tried to install that printer on her machine and we can print one sided but I can't seem to set up the duplex printing option. When I go to print / layout the two sided info is there but it is grey and I can't change. I wonder if I picked the wrong option when the machine wanted me to install the printer. When I opened the print browser in the System Preferences Print and Fax it offered me three versions of the HP P2015 -- one with a "Bonjour" connection and the other two with "Shared Printer" connection. I chose one of the latter. ...?
Data Sharing -- no idea. How do I set it up so we can share files between computers? My son has a PowerBook he set up where there is an icon in the dock that when you click the Finder shows my iMac's desktop as well as all his stuff. Of course I didn't pay any attention when they set that up and he isn't around right now to ask. (Somehow I did install the printer on that laptop and it can print duplex or one-sided. Again, damned if I can remember how I did that!)
We are all running OS X 10.4.11
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Simple start: Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "printer sharing" and "file sharing" for numerous help articles on how to set up each.
If your printer is connected to an AEBS as you imply, then open Airport Utility, click on the Manual Setup button. Then click on the Printer icon in the toolbar. See that your printer is identified properly and turn on Print Sharing. Click on the Update button and wait for the AEBS to recycle.
Be sure you have installed the most recent printer driver. Either check HP's site for possible updated drivers or use the driver included with OS X, if any.

  • Caching user shared data in WebDynPro (i.e. applicationBean)

    Hi,
I'd like to know if there's a standard way to cache/access user shared data on the J2EE engine running my WebDynPro app.
I need to do that because Bapis call in our application are expensive. Thus we want to minimize them. It would be impossible to rewrite the whole backend, because we're migrating from an existing application.
I thought about sharing through a database local to the J2EE engine, or file sharing through a lock. But I bet these options are likely to hinder me than anything else.
    Does anybody has a suggestion?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alexis Trudeau

Indeed, my explanations are a bit misleading. According to your definition, I'm talking about shared data.
For example, in my application we have user profiles. Each user has a subset of these profiles.
Usually, these profiles are only modified during the deployment stage on the client's infrastructure.
Once settled, these profiles are static during production. In that case, I'd rather fetch all the profile once, and work with them locally on the J2EE engine instead of fetching them each time a user is authentified.
    Do you have further suggestions?
P.S. Yes, I do use NetWeaver wizard to create Adaptive RFC Model

  • How to open a .dat file

How do I open a .dat file created by Adobe in Windows 7 (this file was downloaded from ceac website). I tried changing extension to PDF and unchecking "file extension under folder option) When I use Adobe Acrobat XI or Reader, it won't open

Hm, Since you can't simply download that document (and I'm not going to go through the process of applying for one), I'd recomend that you try downloading it again, maybe there was an error in how it was downloaded. You might also need to reach out to the DOS support staff to see if there is something that is being missed in the download process of your application.
Their online FAQ doesn't seem to offer much insight (maybe see if you can select what file type it saves as):
How do I save my DS-160 application to my computer hard drive or a disk?
Saving to a hard drive or disk will allow you to access your application after 30 days. To permanently save your application to your computer hard drive or a disk, select the “Save Application to File” button. Then, click the “Save” button on the File Download window. Identify a place on your computer to save the application, browse to that location, and click the “Save” button on the “Save As” window. The system will download your application to the specified location. Once the download is complete, you can click “Close” to return to the live application on our website. Note: Applications saved to the hard drive of a public or shared computer or memory device could likely be accessed by anyone else who uses the computer or device after you.

  • How to manage a data file using Business Contact Manager database tool

I set up BCM on my desktop and now want to share with the rest of the office. I downloaded BCM database tool on the C drive
of the server and all was well until I tried to move through the wizard. The only option that gets me to a data file is creating a database. However, I receive the error message "Cannot create a new database. The operation has been rolled back. Please
make sure the database service is running". How can I make this work? Truthfully, I don't want to create a new database - I have already set one up; Restore only gives me the database server instance but no choices for the database name list. I have installed
BCM on another co-workers desktop and allowed the database to be shared with her. What more am I missing? Why can't I get the server to see the data file?

    Hi,
If the Database has not been shared, you can't connect to it.
Please also confirm you have been granted permission to access the shared Business Contact Manager database.
You can refer to this article below and there are some factors that you should consider:
Business Contact Manager cannot connect to the shared database

You should not create database files outside of the ASM.
I'm not sure you can move the datafile, I would export the data from the tablespace (if there is data you need there), delete the tablespace and recreate it in the ASM, then import the data back.
If you want to move the datafile, you can try using RMAN (from node1).
First connect to the database with sqlplus and execute:
alter tablespace <tbs_name> offline; Then start RMAN: rman target /
BACKUP AS COPY DATAFILE '<file>' FORMAT '+<ASM_DG>';Then in sqlplus, execute:
alter tablespace <tbs_name> online;I'm not sure it will work, and I hope I got the commands right because I can't check it right now.

  • Problem with a corrupt data file

I have a user who has a corrupt outlook profile, new updates to the exchange servers are not propagating through to her account. I have created her a new profile in outlook which fixes this issue but unfortunately throws up another.
Using her old corrupt profile she has access to her data files of which there are seven. using her new profile these data files although saved as .PST are not recognised by outlook, this sais to me that they also are corrupt. I have tried running SCANPST.exe
and that cannot find the data files either, I have also tried creating a new data file and copying the folders into it without success. Is there some trick I am missing to get these to work with her new profile, they work fine with her old profile which means
they cant be to badly corrupted.
