Sharing multiple external hard drives running multiple OS's on AEBSn

Hi,
I was hoping someone on this forum can help with this. I've been primarily a PC user but have converted to Mac thru a MBP. I purchased the AEBSn with the hope of having a networked storage solution for this mixed OS setup. The plan was to have multiple devices attached through a powered USB hub (>1 ext HD, printer, etc.).
The problem I'm currently encountering is the following:
1. I added a brand new 500 ext HD to the AEBS and had no trouble mounting the drive. The drive is currently formatted as FAT32 and both my PC and MBP have no trouble seeing or accessing the drive. I want to use this drive as a backup for both the MBP and the PC.
2. I tried adding a 2nd ext HD (160GB formatted as Mac Extended Journaled), that I use primarily as a CCC backup for my MBP, to the AEBS to see if I could see this drive. So far I have not been able to see it at all. I've tried manually mounting it using finder>go>connect to server and it still doesn't work.
So my questions are:
1. Why can't I see the 2nd drive? What am I doing wrong? Is it because I have two OS's on the network? Is it because the 160gb is using the wrong Mac format? I have not tried removing the 500GB and just connecting the 160gb to see what happens.
2. From a back up perspective, can I copy Mac files onto the windows formatted drive and vice versa? I want to use the 500gb drive as a backup for files, photos and movies I create on either machine. Is this possible or do I need two different HDs?
Set-up:
* AEBSn (7.2.1)
* powered USB hub
* WD 500GB external HD (formatted FAT32)
* WD 160GB external HD (formatted Extended Journaled) as a test. I'm using it primarily for CCC backup of my MBP and have a bootable copy on this drive. I wanted to see if I could add this drive to the AEBS and have my MBP see it.
* MBP SR 2.4 (10.4.11) accessing AEBS through Wifi
* WinXP desktop accessing AEBS through ethernet
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • IMac won't boot if external hard drive running Time Machine powered on

Upon rebooting, my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, running OS X 10.5.4, locked up in a gray screen, the "gray screen of death."
At the recommendation of the Apple Tech Support rep, I turned off the iMac using the power button, and rebooted with my USB and Firewire devices removed.
The iMac boots fine with everything except my G-tech drive 1GB external hard drive running Time Machine with no partitions, attached using a Firewire 800 cable.
If the external hard drive is on, I get the interminable gray screen.
If I boot with the external hard drive powered off and then power it on after I'm at the Mac desktop, the disc image mounts normally on the desktop.
I've already repaired all disc permissions and it doesn't help.
My external hard drive has used 907 of the 931 GB true capacity. Supposedly, Time Machine removes the old files to make room for the new files.
Time Machine itself is running properly once I get my iMac booted in this peculiar way.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Can I install onto an external hard drive + run off it?

Can I install onto an external hard drive + run off it?
If possible, will the system run at the *same* speed as the built in hard drive?
ALSO: Am I correct in saying that if I replace my current hard drive with an SSD one?
    If so: that *****
    Thanks
    Omar

OS X doesn't matter what disk you boot from, as long as it can be formatted properly in Disk Utility. You can boot from a USB stick drive if it's big enough.
Thunderbolt would be the fastest, the drive would be the limiting factor there. You can find Thunderbolt drives like these at stores like macsales.com. But USB 3 might also feel fast enough.
If you have boot systems installed on many drives connected to your Mac, the way you tell the Mac which one to use is to hold down the Option key at startup. This will present icons of all the connected drives you can boot from, then you just pick one and go.

  • Sharing an external Hard Drive connected to Time Capsule

    Hi all,
I have my time capsule set and running now for a few weeks. I have an external hard drive which want to connect it to TC and share it over the network.
I connected the HD to the TC and restarted the machine. But I'm not sure why is not showing the HD.
Did I need to reset the TC to make the port sharing work? I just didn't want to reset it before asking the question.
    Cheers

Ah, so you are connecting your keyboard to the Time Capsule via usb?  I don't believe that will work.  If your keyboard has an ethernet port and supports sharing of the hard drive you could try running an ethernet cord from your keyboard to your Time Capsule and then seeing if your other computer that are connected to the Time Capsule can see the drive.
You honestly may have more help if you post in the Korg forums.  www.korgforums.com

  • Sharing an external hard drive

I have 3 systems (2 minis running Tiger and 1 G4 running OS9) networked through a D-Link DI-524 router. I also have a LaCie 160GB external hdd on one of the minis. I would like to know how to configure things so that the external LaCie drive is visible and easily accessible to all 3 systems.

Start by setting up file sharing on all three Macs.
On the Mac running MacOS 9.x you must also:
    1. Open the File Sharing control panel.
    2. Click the checkbox to enable the "Enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP" option. (Your computer must already be set up on a TCP/IP network.)
    3. Close the File Sharing control panel.
... as well has having Appletalk enabled (in the Appletalk control panel).
Then use the free application SharePoints to make the external hard drive accessible to all networked Macs.

  • Sharing an external hard drive with a PC

Hello. I am still using a 2005 PPC iMac running Tiger. My photos are stored in Aperture and Lightroom 2, however they are all stored on my computer's hard drive. I want to remove them from my computer and store them on an external hard drive instead.
My flat mate has a Windows based PC laptop and also has stuff he wants to store on an external hard drive. We were thinking about going halves and getting a Western Digital 2TB hard drive and sharing it.
I understand that the hard drives can be shared for both formats using FAT32, although I am aware there are file size limits and data corruption is very possible, so I will be avoiding that. I have read that it can also be done using NTFS for a PC and downloading NTFS-3G for use with the Mac so both formats can read and write to the hard drive.
My question is this; how will this affect my Lightroom library? Is it even possible to store a Mac based Lightroom Library on an external hard drive that has PC files on it. Or is it safer to not bother sharing a hard drive and getting individual ones?

If you are so concerned about data corruption that a 25 year old well tried file system is too risky, what makes you think that a relatively untried, free 3rd party addition is even going to be as safe?
    Maybe you should rethink this.

  • Sharing an external hard drive between two macs

Could someone please give me step-by-step instructions on how I can share an external hard drive between my powerpc(running 10.4.11) and my macbook air(running 10.5.6)? I would like to do this with out any external software.

Simply connect the drive to one of the two computers and there you are!
Use your network and turn on file sharing. It's that simple.

  • 2 Macs sharing an external hard drive, but can't see each other's music

We bought a 300GB Lacie external hard drive, and pointed each Mac's iTunes to the same folder on that drive. Then the computer asked to "consolidate," which means copying all the music on each to that shared folder--which is great so far. But then in iTunes one Mac can only see the music it copied to that folder, and the other can only see the music it copied over. If I go into Finder, I can see both of our music, but in iTunes, no. There is some purchased iTunes music, but mostly just our own CDs.
What happened, and what can I do? Thanks!

Each computer (actually, each user account on each computer) has its own iTunes Library, which is a directory file. Moving computer A's music files to the new hard drive resulted in the Library file being updated to show the new location of the music that already was part of the Library. Moving computer B's files to that same location didn't affect computer A's iTunes Library file.
On each computer, you'll need to use the Add to Library command (or do the equivalent by dragging music folders from the Finder onto the Library icon in the Source panel of iTunes) to get all the music into your Libraries.
If the Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to Library preference is ON (under Advanced\General of iTunes Preferences), then when you add music to your library, those files will be copied to the location in iTunes Music Folder location, if they're not already there. You may want to check these settings to make sure you won't end up with extra copies of music files in locations you hadn't intended.

  • Why is my external hard drive running continuously while running iTunes?

Ever since the latest iTunes update, my 1TB external hard drive (which holds all of my iTunes music and apps, etc.) is constantly running. It used to cycle down after I stopped playing music or a movie or updated my apps, but now it is constantly running. I have to quit iTunes or sometimes shut my whole computer down in order for my hard drive to stop running continuously becasue I don't want it to burn out.

I found out that although my external drive could be read by my Mac, it was not formatted for the Mac journaling. I transferred all of my files from the 1 TB hard drive over to another drive, reformatted it as Mac Journaled, transferred all of the files back onto that drive and now it does not run continuously. I think the Mac was trying to journal the files, but couldn't do it. It now runs great.

  • Apple TV home sharing through external hard drive.

Is it possible to take my movies that are on an external hard drive and hook it to a router so that my computer does not have to be on to home share?

If you intend to use home sharing, that is done through iTunes. The content can reside on your external, but it would need to be pointed to iTunes. The computer would need to be on for it to be available for Apple TV.
The scenario you are looking at would involve looking for a 3rd party app and using an IOS device to transmit the content to Apple TV, and it may not be reliable.

  • Sharing an external hard drive - iMac and iPad

I currently have an external hard drive connected to an iMac. I also have an iPad. How can I share the hard drive between both and have access to it from the iPad. The hard drive is a Western Digital 2TB My book.

iPads are not computers. You can't just share a hard drive like that. It is, in some specific conditions, possible to plug a hard drive or a memory stick through the camera connection kit, but then again, files need to be media files supported by the ipad, and copied a specific way (/DCIM/8CHARSNAME.EXT)

Does anyone know why I can't share an external maxtor firewire hd between two laptops running leopard? I wish to hard wire through a firewire hub to both machines and I can only get one laptop at a time to see the drive.

Most external drives are not designed for this purpose. Use a network connection such as Ethernet or AirPort instead.

  • How do you see TC in itunes as a shared device/ external hard drive?

In order to pull movies and music off the TC and back onto the mac? Like a shared device? Just wiped out our macbook pro but backed up everything first on the tc, now it's frustrating because we are having trouble finding things that seem to be missing?? Sooooo confused!!!!!!!

Are the files you want to access stored on the Time Capsule as regular files or as part of a Time Machine backup?  If they are regular files, first mount the TC disk:
    1) Open a Finder window.  Look for the Time Capsule in the "sidebar".  If you don't see it, open the Finder's preferences, select the Sidebar panel, and check "Connected servers".
    2) Click on the Time Capsule in the sidebar.  You should see the Time Capsule's disk (named "Data" if you didn't change it).
    3) Double-click on the "Data" icon in the window.  Authenticate with the disk password you declared.
The Time Capsule's disk should now be mounted and you should be able to use iTunes to access it.

  • I have a 2007 Macbook Pro that is running 10.7.5 and I am trying to use a 10.6.3 DVD to install Snow Leopard to an external hard drive.

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro that is running 10.7.5 and I am trying to use a 10.6.3 DVD to install Snow Leopard to an external hard drive. I've followed every possible instruction on every which website. The problem is when I boot to Install disc, I am unable to choose which hard drive I'd like to install the OS on. It says that it is unable to Install and automatically takes me to Restore and suggests that I restore to Time Machine backups. Any and all help is appreciated.

    lovinlife5959,
have you tried booting from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? See if you can install its version of Mac OS X (either 10.4.9, 10.4.10, or 10.5.0, depending upon when it shipped from the factory) onto your external hard drive. If that works, boot from your external hard drive, run Software Update on it, and then try updating your external drive to 10.6.3 via the white Snow Leopard DVD.
