Shell command line

I am a pc programmer. What is the shell command for listing all of the files in the hard drive on by size order and piping them to a log file (or, in finder, how can I list all of the files in the hard drive by size order)?

du |sort -nr > ~/desktop/sort.txt
will put the list on the desktop
It will list everything starting in the directory you are in.
There are many ways to do this.
for other options:
man du
man sort
man ls

  • Printing PDF file Using Shell Command Line

    Hello I am writing  a program from MicroSoft Excel's Macro that will print PDF files. I have managed to get the program to work but I cannot prevent the file not being opened. Basically the PDF file would get printed but the file would automatically opened up.
    I am using shell command line to write this. And this is my code:
    FileName = "C:\EGB Gaming Lab\Training Manual\Testing Documents\Testing Checklists\Bill Validator*"
    myShell.Run ("Acrobat.exe /t" & FileName)
    I have tried using /h but it still opens the file.
    I am referring to this support case:
    http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devsup.nsf/docs/52080.htm
    Thank you

    You may be able to adopt this script:
    on open dropped_items
       -- Write a message into the event log.
       log "  --- Starting on " & ((current date) as string) & " --- "
       -- set see to alias "Macintosh-HD:Users:mac:Desktop:app.html"
       -- set dropped_items to {see}
       set the_app to "Safari"
       repeat with dropped_item_ref in dropped_items
          --set UrlBase to "xzzx FILE://" & POSIX path of dropped_item_ref
          --display dialog UrlBase
          -- Activate
          activate application the_app
          -- Open the URL

             open dropped_item_ref
             -- print dropped_item_ref
             tell application "System Events"
                tell process the_app
                   delay 3

  • Inputting non-visual characters from the shell (command line)

    is it possible to capture user input from the command line (using System.in or any other available method) that contains characters that are not printing characters and are not legal in a java.lang.String? i.e. is it possible to write a program that recognizes the arrows and CTRL, SHIFT, and ALT keys as input without using graphical (Swing or AWT) classes in the program?

    No. Shift, ALT and CTRL are key modifiers. Perhaps JCurses would allow you to check for these modifiers as Swing does.

  • How we run command line commands in oracle

    ERROR:-1command[dir] The handle is invalid.
    In the sample code, I've executed a Linux/Unix program called date, physical file /usr/bin/date.
    Is there a DATE.EXE or a DIR.EXE program that you can execute on Windows?
    No. Both DATE and DIR are commands of a program - a 32bit console program called CMD.EXE.
    Your confusion stems from thinking that OSEXEC is calling the Windows shell command line. It is not. It is not calling CMD.EXE and passing Window Shell Commands to CMD.EXE.
    OSEXEC is calling, via Java, the Win32 API call called CreateProcess(). This is a call to the Win32 kernel. It requests the kernel to load an executable program as a process image.
    The kernel expects an EXE (or executable) file to load. You are passing it a command from a program. You just as well can pass it a Java command, a MS Access Basic Command, an Excel Macro, etc... Same thing. The kernel has no idea that this "command" needs another program to be loaded, and that command be "passed" somehow to that program.
    So, you need to call CMD.EXE via OSEXEC. And you can pass parameters to it. Open a Command Console and type cmd /? for help on the command line switches and parameters for CMD.EXE.
    I believe the following should work:
    SQL> select OSEXEC( 'c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /c date /t') from dual;

  • Fresh install (2012/11/01): Not reaching the command line after boot

    Hi
    I just installed the latest 2012/11/01 base + base-devel Arch, but after booting in. the process stopped at the point were the last messages from the kernel were printed in the console. The boot process never reached the shell command line for logging in. I re-installed, thinking I did something wrong but again I had the same problem. Eventually. I accidentally found that by keying Enter, I could get the shell login request and I could login OK, having a seemingly functional base system. However, the console font I specified in vconsole.conf did not take effect and the halt command would hang, although reboot worked OK.
    I have of course little experience with systemd, but I get the feeling the all this is due to systemd not running properly. I read whatever documentation I found relevant but since there is so much of it, I believe I must have missed the relevant info.
    Please help me to get my new install run properly and please clarify whether  have to explicitely enable systemd after completing the official installation instructions.
    My thanks in advance.

    The halt command does not turn off your computer. The "poweroff" command does.
    Writing "systemctl poweroff" is not necessary, as /sbin/poweroff is a link to systemctl poweroff.
    Last but not least search for suspicous lines in the log files. You can read them with this command.

    Hi Satish,
    I was able to figure that out, that we need to hard code the path as the 2nd parameter.
    But I guess there is a way out in Unix where we can handle this situation, where we are not willing to hard code.
    Anyways, thanks a lot for your input .. -:)

  • Merge/concatenate animation codec movie files in the command line/shell

    Anyone know how to do that of have suggestions?

    Hi,
    I'm also having trouble with this same issue. I've been trying to change the Quicktime Default Setting to 10-bit uncompressed (btw codec works fine out directly out of QT and other apps), or to use the command line to do quick renders of tiff frame sequences to QT 10-bit. I think its a problem with my syntax on the command line. As per the manual I set up a fileout in a script with 10-bit as the codec, opened the script in Textedit and followed the instructions on p393, and dropped it into the include/startup directory. Below is a copy of the Textedit view of the script output settings. Also, If I want to use these settings the command line what should I change? The quotation marks, commas etc?
    "QuickTime", "Shake 3 QT 1", "Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2",
    0, "100W@c6000WDcsuHpoe10pFnKA6W230PPMMRH#0LgfI5ALV1EaKGn3DG3214QaPb03SeOBPg00K1bY AESIIW0KAbabF7YWOQan8401v6QvQehFnRYIBt9be1B4AEjYA6ci8YmM#IKXCg5aRMZC2MXBM0Ani04w HAJLmBrQ97MtegeEEO9d5oBoxCgv7GNhEOvai8INwFwb2roIf91bvbr040HAK4IYCW0",
    0, 44100, 16);
    I get the same message returned in Terminal:
    error: - NRiCompressor - corrupted input data (length)
    The QuickTime codec specified in the global default could not be selected. The system default codec will be selected.
    So it renders to Animation. Something else I found was that the example on p393 in the manual is for 10-bit uncompressed - so I tried copying it right off the page, into Textedit, and into the include/startup dir - still no joy.
    Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

    Hot to configure shell or system path to include the folder to which (TF client) unzipped archive available. I am new to Mac X OS. Please help.

    Dmitry,
    Thanks for the great writeup!
    I think I've got my universal instant client libraries built correctly.
    I too am using MacBook Pro but I'm getting stuck at building the 32 bit oci8.so
    First problem is my pecl download (ver 1.4.1) did not contain a "configure" file so ./configure failed.
    I used configure from /sw/....... to try to continue.
    Second problem. Using existing configure from /sw/.... I used an appropriate variation of your example command
    (./configure --with-oci8=instantclient,/usr/local/oracle/instantclient_10_2 && make).
    Things look like everything ran OK but The output does NOT include an oci8.so file
    So I guess my question is: Which "configure" should I be using? And if it is not the one on the system under /sw/...
    where would I get it since it doesn't come in the pecl download?

  • Bash shell does not recognise 'java', 'javac' commands (Linux command line)

    i' ve used javac and java compile & execute commands to build the same application on the DOS command line with Windows - no problem.
    But when I try to compile the same file on the command line under Linux Redhat (7.1) using Bash shell i get <bash: javac: command not found> and <bash: java: command not found>.
    In both cases I'm using j2sdk1.4.2 downloaded from java.sun.com for Windows & Linux respectively.
    I make sure I have both the javac and the file I want to compile in the same directory ../j2sdk1.4.2/bin for both the Windows and the Linux applications.
    Is there something I need to do to get bash to recognise javac, java etc? Is there a different setup procedure?
    Any angles on this are much appreciated ..

    Have you tried these correctly..
    Set the CLASSPATH environment variable to include whichever directories you like, eg (on bash) type:
    export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:.:<your java dirs>
    To make java easier to run, put the directory in which it is installed into your path:
    export JAVA_HOME=<where you installed java>
    Then do
    export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
    verify it has worked by simply typing
    java
    You can put all of these commands into the .*rc file for your shell, so that they are executed every time you open the shell. So if you are using bash you can put them into ~/.bashrc
    Read up setting the PATH and CLASSPATH for more info.
    This shall resolve the issue .

  • Need a sample file for IDQ parameter file and a Shell script to execute it from command line

    Hello,The parameter file itself is generated from cmd line using infacmd command and it automatically creates the parameters inside it based on the parameters created inside the mapping and the workflow. So, even if one provides you a paramtere file for IDQ, it might fail as your workflow definition and its paramters would be different. Thanks,K

    Hi all   My project migrated from Power Center to IDQ developer and I had to move all my mappings to IDQ developer. I was able to migrate everything except for the parameter files. It seems that the layout and syntax for parameter file is different from Power Center. Is there anyone who can help me out or send me a sample of a parameter file for IDQ? As well as a sample shell script to run the mapping or application from the Command line.This is an urgent need and It will be greatly appreciated.   ThanksNaveen Medisetti

  • Command Line Recall (Korn Shell) - Last Command Not Blank

    I'm using emacs for command line recall, so I use the up and down arrow keys, which work fine.
    However, I come from a Tru64 background, and when I go back through the commands, and then come forward again, I expect to be able to go past the last command entered and return to a blank command line, so if I don't want to choose anything from history I can enter a new command. What's happening for me on the Solaris box I am now working on is that going forward in history sticks on the last command entered, so I have to backspace it to enter anything new.
    Any ideas on how I can change this behaviour?

    Kevin,
    Python has some great libraries to do what you are asking in the Unix enviornment:
    To get enviornmental variables:
    ====================
    import os
    # store the env var audit_username in a variable; if it doesn't exist, use 'davew' as the default
    username = os.getenv("audit_username",default='davew')
    To run Unix commands:
    ====================
    import commands
    # run a command from unix (example from Python manual
    commands.getstatusoutput('ls /bin/ls')

  • Shell commands in applescript noob

    Hi all this is my first post in these forums and I come seeking help with a certain script I'm writing for my current college job. The purpose of the script is to install creative cloud from a server and this is as far as I've got. First I can get as far as setting the correct directory in the server by doing:
    do script "cd /Volumes/applications/Mac/'Adobe Creative Cloud'/'Enterprise - enduser'/Build"
    now when I press run the terminal screen pops up just fine with no errors in the right directory. However I've been reading up that to do other commands in the same shell I must do do shell script. When doing this however terminal doesn't do...anything. The reason why I was trying this is because my next command would be initiating the install which is the command:
    "installer -verbose -pkg 'enterprise_Install.pkg' -target /" with adminitrator privilages
    Now my question is how would formulate this within applescript? Thanks.

    do shell script "cd /Volumes/applications/Mac/'Adobe Creative Cloud'/'Enterprise - enduser'/Build ;  installer -verbose -pkg 'enterprise_Install.pkg' -target / with administrator privilages"
    You got the double quote in the wrong place.
    do shell script "cd /Volumes/applications/Mac/'Adobe Creative Cloud'/'Enterprise - enduser'/Build ;  installer -verbose -pkg 'enterprise_Install.pkg' -target / " with administrator privilages
    It is easier to diagnose problems with debug information. I suggest adding log statements to your script to see what is going on.  Here is an example.
        Author: rccharles
        For testing, run in the Script Editor.
          1) Click on the Event Log tab to see the output from the log statement
          2) Click on Run

        http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2002/tn2065.html
    on run
        -- Write a message into the event log.
        log "  --- Starting on " & ((current date) as string) & " --- "
        --  debug lines
        set unixDesktopPath to POSIX path of "/System/Library/User Template/"
        log "unixDesktopPath = " & unixDesktopPath
        set quotedUnixDesktopPath to quoted form of unixDesktopPath
        log "quoted form is " & quotedUnixDesktopPath
        try
            set fromUnix to do shell script "sudo ls -l  " & quotedUnixDesktopPath with administrator privileges
            display dialog "ls -l of " & quotedUnixDesktopPath & return & fromUnix
        on error errMsg
            log "ls -l error..." & errMsg
        end try

  • Error while running a Discoverer Workbook with parameter from command line

    I am trying to run a discoverer report from command line and export the results in xls on to my local machine. I could do it fine for a simple workbook, but if I add a parameter(madatory) to the workbook and run it from command line specifying the parameter value I wanted to run the report for, I do not get any results. Here is the command line I am using.
    dis51usr.exe /connect user/password@database /apps_user /apps_responsibility "System Administrator" /eul EUL_US /open C:\Disco\Test.DIS /sheet Testsheet /parameter Period Jan-07 /export xls C:\Disco\X.xls /batch
    Parameter value is entered in correct format(Jan-07).
    When I removed /batch from this to see if I get any error, Discoverer Desktop opened up, logged in and gets terminated saying 'Oracle Discoverer Desktop has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
    Did anybody come across this issue before?

    Hello,
    If you have a few minutes, Windows is also aborting for me:
    the differences are, my situation is:
    a) am running the command line from a .bat file
    b) am NOT running with parms, want the discoverer query to come up for the user
    c) am running a query from the database
    i am signing in as myself BUT running a query that was created by a generic user called SREG
    c) if i run the .bat file from Windows Explorer, the query opens fine
    d) if i execute the .bat file from within Microsoft Access using the shell command,
    the query opens and then aborts RIGHT BEFORE the parm screen would display
    e) btw, if i modify the .bat file, to run a query from MY database signon, then (d) - running .bat file
    from vb using SHELL command works
    Do you have a ideas as to why (d) does not work? I would be very grateful for your time, tx, sandra
    this is what i posted yesterday, tx: Re: Running Discoverer command line

  • Run shell commands using java program

    Hi guys,
    I am trying to run shell commands like cd /something and ./command with arguments as follows, but getting an exception that ./command not found.Instead of changing directory using "cd" command I am passing directory as an argument in rt,exec().
    String []cmd={"./command","arg1", "arg2", "arg3"};
    File file= new File("/path");
    try{
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process proc = rt.exec(cmd,null,file);
    proc.waitFor();
    System.out.println(proc.exitValue())
    BufferedReader buf = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(proc.getInputStream()));
    catch(Exception e)

    So can anyone please tell me what is wrong with this approach? or is there any better way to do this?
    Thanks,

    What gives you the idea that the process to execute is called "./command"? If this is in Windows, it is "cmd.exe" for example.It does not have to be cmd.exe in Windows. Any executable or .bat file can be executed as long as one either specifies the full path or the executable is in a directory that is in the PATH.
    On *nix the file has to have the executable bit set and one either specifies the full path or the executable must be in a directory that is in the PATH . If the executable is a script then if there is a hash-bang (#!) at the start of the first line then the rest of the line is taken as the interpreter  to use. For example #!/bin/bash or #!/usr/bin/perl .
    One both window and *nix one can exec() an interpreter directly and then pass the commands into the process stdin. The advantage of doing this is that one can change the environment in one line and it  remains in effect for subsequent line. A simple example of this for bash on Linux is
    import java.io.OutputStreamWriter;
    import java.io.Writer;
    public class ExecInputThroughStdin
        public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception
            final Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("bash");
            new Thread(new PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable(process.getErrorStream(), System.err)).start();
            new Thread(new PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable(process.getInputStream(), System.out)).start();
            final Writer stdin = new OutputStreamWriter(process.getOutputStream());
            stdin.write("xemacs&\n");
            stdin.write("cd ~/work\n");
            stdin.write("dir\n");
            stdin.write("ls\n");
            stdin.write("gobbldygook\n"); // Forces output to stderr
            stdin.write("echo $PATH\n");
            stdin.write("pwd\n");
            stdin.write("df -k\n");
            stdin.write("ifconfig\n");
            stdin.write("echo $CWD\n");
            stdin.write("dir\n");
            stdin.write("cd ~/work/jlib\n");
            stdin.write("dir\n");
            stdin.write("cat /etc/bash.bashrc\n");
            stdin.close();
            final int exitVal = process.waitFor();
            System.out.println("Exit value: " + exitVal);
    }One can use the same approach with Windows using cmd.exe but then one must be aware of the syntactic differences between commands running in .bat file and command run from the command line. Reading 'help cmd' s essential here.
    The class PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable in the above example just copies an InputStream to an OutputStream and I use
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.OutputStream;
    public class PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable implements Runnable
        public PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable(InputStream is, OutputStream os)
            is_ = is;
            os_ = os;
        public void run()
            try
                final byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
                for (int count = 0; (count = is_.read(buffer)) >= 0;)
                    os_.write(buffer, 0, count);
            } catch (IOException e)
                e.printStackTrace();
        private final InputStream is_;
        private final OutputStream os_;
    }
