Command Line Recall (Korn Shell) - Last Command Not Blank

I'm using emacs for command line recall, so I use the up and down arrow keys, which work fine.
However, I come from a Tru64 background, and when I go back through the commands, and then come forward again, I expect to be able to go past the last command entered and return to a blank command line, so if I don't want to choose anything from history I can enter a new command. What's happening for me on the Solaris box I am now working on is that going forward in history sticks on the last command entered, so I have to backspace it to enter anything new.
Any ideas on how I can change this behaviour?

Kevin,
Python has some great libraries to do what you are asking in the Unix enviornment:
To get enviornmental variables:
====================
import os
# store the env var audit_username in a variable; if it doesn't exist, use 'davew' as the default
username = os.getenv("audit_username",default='davew')
To run Unix commands:
====================
import commands
# run a command from unix (example from Python manual
commands.getstatusoutput('ls /bin/ls')

    Hi,
    You can try using "set -o vi" in .profile or at shell prompt.

  • Can I just issue sqlplus command like a Korn shell does in python?

    Hi
    I have a question on python as an Oracle DBA. Do I have to have cx_oracle or another similar compenent in order to access Orade database? Can I just do sqlplus like a Korn shell does?
    I am an Oracle DBA. Daily job requires shell scripting. I am skilful at Korn/BASH which I use on a daily basis to interact with database. However, I found them not powerful and flexible enough to handle text and strings. I am new to both Perl and Python. I pick Python because it is easy to read and maintain. Learning curve is not as steep as Perl.
    I am not a developer who cares much about data types compatability or APIs. I do care about how to pass Unix variables in Python. A typical task is like
    =================================================
    set Unix environment variables (each database has a line in a file)
    use sqlplus to connect to each database specified in the file, i.e. looping
    get information I want and store them in files, i.e. logs
    end loop
    do text/string manipulation againt the log file
    if error is found, send email alert to DBA
    =================================================
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    I opened the contents of the application and run the shell script for opening aplication there it worked very fine and application started working.. But if i open application directly through launchpad or finder it doesnt show up and console
    I tried running those commands in the terminal directly there they work.. But dunno whats wrong in here. and even if try to open the application through the terminal it all opens fine.. what could be the possible problem, is it with my mac..?

    i finally figured out the problem.. it is with the environmental variables.  the path for all those commands like "grep" is not being set for the GUI applications.  that is why i got that error.
    for those GUI applications which require path, we have to set path in the file /etc/launchd.conf  the environmental variables set in here are used by the gui applications and those which are launched through spotlight.
    that file may bot be present in most of the macs. No problem even if not present,we can create one and use.
    so  type in terminal
              $ sudo vi /etc/launchd.conf
    and in the editor add these lines
              setenv PATH = /new/path
    and save.  Note: replace /new/path with the path which you need to have for the commands used in the script.
    remeber that you need to restart your mac for applications to use these environmental variables.

  • [SOLVED]/usr/lib/arch-tempfiles line 106: install:command not found

    Hi everyone!
    This is my boot.log
    http://pastebin.com/1gfynhSN
    It says"/usr/lib/initscripts/arch-tmpfiles:line 106: install:command not found".This is leading to problems such as dbus and network manager not being started(even manually),no shutdown option,not able to 'open' log files without sudo  etc.
    I think a possible reason for this is that I had messed up with symlinks.I had issued the command
    sudo ln -s /bin/install /usr/bin/install
    .Then I had used
    cd /bin/
    unlink install
    Now,I find that /bin/install and /usr/bin/install does not exist.(I have deleted them!) .How can I fix this up?Any help would be appreciated.

    Reinstall coreutils (or manually extract install from the package and put it in /usr/bin).

  • (Solved) fbsetbg: line 153: xmessage: command not found

    Hello,
    I'm trying to set background image for Fluxbox.
    After typing fbsetbg command in xterm I get following error:
    $ fbsetbg -f ~/.fluxbox/backgrounds/wallpaper.jpg

    The most common way to solve this (according to Internet) is to install xorg-apps, but there is no xmessage app under it.
    # pacman -S xorg-apps

    You can add the line "set -x" at the beginning of your script to see at which line it fails? I suspect the . ./env line.

    It looks like you might not have patch installed.  What happens when you type
    pacman -Q patch
    If you get an error that the patch package is not found, install base-devel.

    Hi!
    After 6 hours of experimenting, disconnecting devices, formatting my hard drive (joy!) and getting nowhere, I found the problem: apparently, Leopard has trouble dealing with some characters in the volume name (in my case it was '). Rename the volume to something simple, short and with no weird characters and the Leopard will install.
    And, to Apple: I'm very disappointed with the quality of the Leopard install. If a character is valid in OS X, the setup should support it!
    Best regards,

  • Automtor shell script "command not found"

    I want to include the execution of a shell script in Automator. The script just executes a third-party application (actually, pdftk) with certain parameters. I have written the script, saved it in my Home directory as "foo.sh", made it executable, and can correctly call it from Terminal with ./foo.sh. It works as expected.
    But if I include it in Automator's workflow, into action "Run shell script", its execution breaks complaining that "pdftk: command not found". This indicates that the script is correctly found and read by Automator. How is it, that Terminal's bash can find the command, but Automator doesn't ? Have commands to be written in a special way to be understood by Automator ? Perhaps third-party commands are not allowed in Automator ?

    As twtwtw has said, you environment when running Automator is NOT the same as when you are in a Terminal session.
