Sherlok 1.4 Java Application Monitor

Hai All,
Is Sherlok 1.4 Java Application Monitor good for monitering the memory usage, performace issues of the java applications like EJBs.
if any one knows about this one, please give the suggestion on this

I have heard of Sherlok but, never got it to work right.
What helped me out was GCviewer. In fact, I did a blog post on what is does and where to get it.

I develop Java application under Windows 2000 datacenter. For gurantee to capture all of abnormal situation of java application and also JVM, I need to know how to capture the situation. Do any other tools to do these things? I am very appreciated if you could tell me.

You don't exactly need any specific tools to just capture exceptions, that can easily be done by wrapping the program you want to monitor with your own main() method and adding some shutdown hooks...
But it would be nice to know what you want to do once it happens....

However, if you mean watching the process from outside the VM, then you need something else, I suppose.

Need to write a TSR in Java to monitor when to open an application

I need to have a TSR (preferably in Java) to monitor keyboard strokes.
when a specific combination of keys was typed - it mean System Administrator typed it and need his system admin application to open.
And I don't have a clue how to approach this issue/subject.

If you mean by TSR: Terminate-and-Stay-Resident try Google with the words Java and Daemon.

AFAIK that's not possible in Java without some sort of GUI component to add a KeyListener to. The way to do it then would be to use JNI:

Java Application Performance Monitoring - J2EE Transaction Monitoring

Hi,
Does SCOM 2012 R2 support J2EE transaction monitoring, ie how application behaves from end users. Apdex scores,response time and throughput , Execution method and SQL queries.I could not find transaction monitoring information in Java MP guide.
Is that Java managment pack supports monitoring only Tomcat and not weblogic,websphere and jboss on Linux servers,

You're talking about the metrics similar to those which we have after configuring application monitoring in .NET Application Performance Monitoring (AVIcode APM) template, right? If so, this sort of APM profiling for Java apps introduced in SCOM 2012
R2. But it's only for Tomcat5.5+ hosted Web Applications:

Java application crashes due to some problem in native code

Hi All
I have a Java application that calls APIs in a 3rd party DLL(I don't have access to its source code or logs) through my VC++ DLL(Win32) that acts as the wrapper DLL.
The Application has many functionalities and is based on multithreading (both on Java layer as well as C++ layer). Most of the functionalities are working , but when I try to close the application, it crashes.
Moreover the crashing occurs inconstently, sometimes it does not crash. Instead of showing any debug information , it simply creates a error file with disassembly code that I am not able to understand.
Though the error seems like an java error, but actually it seems to be due to native code. I have try catch blocks in my code and also implemented settranslator functionality to get hold of structured/C exceptions. But still I am not able to catch any exceptions.

The JAVA Application during initialisation establishes a connection with the host server for various devices. For each of the device it establishes a separate connection and keeps listening on these connections using multithreading.
During App close, we need to close each of these connections one by one for each device.
The opening /closing of connection is done by 3rd party DLL and call to there APIs is done through a C++ Wrapper DLL that I have built between the Java layer and their DLL.
When we close the Application, I am always able to close the connections on the first 2 devices. Then all of a sudden it crashes either for the 3rd device conn. close or for the 4th one. The code is the same for all the devices . That too sometimes it just goes fine without crashing. If its a null pointer exception, why is it that it crashes on some occassions and not in other times. More importantly, why is it that it does not fail for the first 2 devices , but fails for the 3rd or 4th device connection close?
Can please anyone help me. Please suggest me as to how I can determine the cause of the error.
And is this error really coming in ntdll.dll or is it getting caused of my dll?

The first place that is likely is in your code.
The second most likely place for the cause is because you are using the third party library incorrectly. For example before exiting you are supposed to clean up resources and you are not doing so.
As a remote possibility, much less likely that either of the above, there is a bug in jnative or in the 3rd party library.

How to check if a user session is active in Java application server

Hi Experts,
We have a online scenario with a third party system by which a portal user will launch the third party application in a new window from portal. The SSO will work at the third party web application with the dynamic key that is generated by calling a webservice for that user. Now, as the user works on the launched screen, they will have to check whether the user (logged in portal) session is still active. ie., they will be periodically calling a service hosted by SAP java application server to find out whether the corresponding user who launched the session is still logged in or logged out.
So, my question is, how can i find out programatically whether a user/user's session is still logged in/active in SAP Netweaver Java AS? We are in version 7.3.
Kindly help me in this regard.

A Java application how to pass Microsoft OEM Ready program?

Hello,
I have a Java application that needs to pass OEM Ready program, but it fails on AppVerifier item. The error messages are:
"Freeing memory block inside current thread's stack address range."
"First chance access violation for current stack trace."
These errors are occurred by JVM. Anybody understands a Java application how to pass AppVerifier? Thanks in
advance.
p.s. The Java application is only a simple "Hello World" program.
p.s. I also test many popular Java applications (such as JBuilder/NetBeans), they
also cannot pass AppVerifier.

One small update. These errors are reported by AppVerifier tool. But the origin of the errors seems to be coming from JNI Calls. Basically AppVerifier is a runtime verification tool and helps in monitoring an application's interaction with OS, the registry, the file system,heap, handles, locks, and more and reports the errors found.
And when I check my application ( which interacts with few .jar files using JNI calls ) with AppVerifier, it is reporting the errors, upon debugging I found the source of the errors to be the JNI calls. Any idea about the reasons and fix for these errors.

Specifying a process name for a java application

Hi,
we run multiple java applications on our Windows 2003 server. It is diffucult to monitor these processes as they all appear as "java.exe" in the Windows Task Manager > Processes.
Is there a way to specify a name for such a process? My colleague has suggested creating a copy of java.exe for each process, and then renaming the executable to reflect the name of the application it is starting. I think this method is not very flexible.

If you don't like it then I think (as a guess only) that the following is possible.
1. Create your own java launcher. As long as you don't distribute it you can start with the java source code for this.
2. Find the Windows API that allows you to change the application name on start up.
3. Modify the launcher to do this via a command line option.
Of course there might not be any such API.

My java application runs under AIX?
The application needs to get its own PID.
There is a possibility to get it by
Runtime.exec("ps -ef | grep <user.name>");
But is there any other alternate possibility?

He found several ways:
* Use Java management and monitoring API
ManagementFactory.getRuntimeMXBean().getName();returns something like
1826@localhost
where 1826 is the PID of the JVM process, i.e. my application's process. But this hack is JVM dependent and may not work on JVM's other than Sun's
* Use a shell script to put a property in place that is set to the PID:
exec java -Dpid=$$ -jar myapp.jar* Java Native Interface - cumbersome and platform dependent solution
* Use procfs (Linux solution: read /proc/self, nifty nifty, posted in the comments of the resp. post!)

Create Java application with Essbase

I have a demand for a potential client.
Where I believe it is best to implement an application with Java or APEX another relational database and Essbase.
How Hyperion Planning and others.
But not using Hyperion Planning.
How would integrate it with Essbase?
How should I build a Java application without losing any of Essbase?
Anyone ever done this?

I do not believe that Oracle would take steps for me create a Hyperion Planning. -ok.
Then all the resources used by Planning and other apps should be available for APIs and MaxL or otherwise connect, execute and monitor Essbase Database.
I believe there is a significant demand for this scenario using technology Essbase.
It's a big four who has requested an opinion on this.

Java application hangs on I/O

Hello,
Could use some help as I've been racking my brain and going crazy. I have a Java application who's sole purpose in life is to monitor a QFS file system for when it goes bad. This main process kicks off a thread(we'll call it thread A) which lives indefinitely. This thread wakes up every so often and kicks off a thread to write a file, and then a thread to read that file back in, and then a thread to delete that file. Thread A has no interaction back to the main process but does monitor each of it's subthreads. This process works great for all testing that you can do, like unmounting the file system and pulling network cables etc. The problem lies when the QFS servers start doing their server not responding routine(basically a real failure and not a purposely inflicted one. What happens is that the whole Java application hangs. The main process, and the parent thread(thread A) all grind to a hault. From the command line anything you try to do in that file system also hangs but you can ctrl-c out of it(like a ls or cd to it. I have been experimenting with all the ways I can think of to fix this, like thread.interupt(), using Runtime.exec instead of I/O objects and trying to control the Process object, and I've tried exposing the FileInputStream and FileOutputStream objects in order to call close() on them. I've been reading that the interupt() method doesn't work for all intense purposes and that the latter method I tried is the way to do it, although, these postings say that that doesn't necessarily always work on Linux. Unfortunately, I am running this application on a Solaris 10 X86 platform which has a lot of similarities to Linux and am experiencing this not working. Has anybody had to do anything like this or handle cases like this that could maybe point me in the direction that they were successful in?

Just to verify you are not, in any way, using external apps via something like exec() right?
So the blocking processes are read, write and delete?
And you are sure that you are in fact calling interrupt on all of the relevant threads?
Presuming yes than given that you have already demonstrated that you can't interrupt them it doesn't matter much what you do in java it isn't going to work. So look for a different solution.
One possibility, spin up a seperate java app that does the actual work. Create a socket server, obviously seperate from other threads to manage. It verifies that the app is still working and allows the caller to shut it down - via system.exit().
Then you have a management app that starts that app and when needed you tell it to shut down and then restart it.

Launch multiple WS apps from a local Java application?

I should develop a local Java application that on demand launches webstart applications. Obviously it could be done with a simple HTML file, but the requirements are that launched apps be monitored by the launching app, so they need to be in the same JVM.
I tried
java -Djnlpx.home="C:/programfilesdir/Java Web Start"

Then Launcher.java calls com.sun.javaws.Main's main method passing the JNLP URL as a parameter.
This launches Java Web Start and then the child app, but for some reason I ignore the Launcher app is exited without exceptions as soon as javaws starts.
Provided that the Java WS app manager is itself a Java app that launches WS app's, any clue on how to do the same thing? Or can the source code be inspected?

JVM.You might check out netx, a open-source JNLP client that has extra support for running multiple apps in a single JVM. It includes a SecurityManager that can catch System.exit and close the calling app's windows and resources (applet sounds, etc) instead of closing the JVM. It has other support too like separate look and feels for each app.
It doesn't yet implement all of the spec though, but it does run most JNLP apps.

Profiling a Java Application

I am relatively new in using a profiler. A large simulation software that I developed requires to be profiled. I want to keep track of the memory usage, CPU usage, time, etc associated with a function call etc. I tried to use Sun Studio 8 to run the profiler. It seems the tutorials on profilers .. all of them ... are intended for Enterprise Applications. All I require is to monitor a general Java application. Could someone answer whether it is possible to profile a java Application?

The Profiler hasn't been a part of default Netbeans distribution. The JSE8 is based on NB4.1. Profiler compatible with NB4.1 is an early-access Milestone release, and thus i'd recommend to consider more recent version of the Profiler, the one for NB5.x (though you'd need to install NB5 also).
