Shorter ejb-jar.jar question.

According to the spec Manifest files are deprecated in ejb1.1. how does
one make reference to another EJB without it? IE. is the <ejb-ref> tags in
the deployment descriptor enough or do these classes need to be included in
the jar file ?

J2EE 1.4 implementations are required to support what is known as an Installed Library.
This is a .jar file that is added to the application server installation such that individual
applications have visibility to the classes without packaging those classes within the .ear files
themselves. Consult your vendor's documentation for specifics on how to do it.

Weblogic-ejb-jar.xml generation and editing question with JEE5 / EJB3

Since EJBGen only works with EJB 2.1, is there a way to auto-generate weblogic-ejb-jar.xml when using a JEE5 ejb module?
In the tooling like OEPE 11g, an EJB3 project will generate an empty deployment descriptor weblogic-ejb-jar.xml file if you mark it that way in the wizard, but it doesn't populate it with any values.
Is the weblogic-ejb-jar.xml file is created/edited by hand, do the settings like this example still work or even make sense given the changes in the spec between 2.1 and 3.0?

For a JEE5 EJB module, rather than using EJBGen, you can use WLS specific annotations for configuring common settings. If you follow the link below, you can see a list of supported EJB annotations. Disregard the fact that the documentation section title is WebLogic Kodo Annotations. That is incorrect and I've filed a bug for it.

Unfortunately, we don't yet support setting all weblogic-ejb-jar.xml configuration values via annoations so in some cases a weblogic-ejb-jar.xml is still required.
You can hand edit your weblogic-ejb-jar.xml and the example you posted below should work fine.

How to use multiple ejb-jar.xml files

Hello -
If the project you work on has a lot of beans that you need to configure them in one ejb-jar.xml file. Then ejb-jar.xml file will be getting bigger and bigger. I am wondering if there is any way to divide the ejb-jar.xml file into multiple sub ejb-jar.xml files and then combin them together when deploy it. Same question question for the vendor ejb-jar.xml like weblogic-ejb-jar.xml.

No, there is no notion of combining ejb-jar.xmls at deployment time in Java EE. There is no
set limit on the number of ejb components within an ejb-jar module either.

Can't create a JAXB binding for ejb-jar.xml using xjc

Hi all,
I have been trying to build a JAXB binding for EJB deployment descriptors, mainly because I have to update a hand-cranked ejb-jar.xml file on the fly with some additions that have come from a code generator.
I have tried to use
xjc ejb-jar_2_1.xsd j2ee_1_4.xsd ejb-jar_2_1.xsd
xjc on the schema definitions I found at http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/ but I can't get it to work. It produces reams of errors, see below for a short extract.
Of course, someone could put me out of my misery and tell me where to find a binding that someone else has done. I can't be the first chimp on the planet that has wanted to do this!
Any help much appreciated.

Missing listener-threads attribute in orion-ejb-jar.xml !!

I was trying to do some performance tuning as given in BPEL admin guide. For one of the BPEL property namely 'dspMaxThreads', guide says "Sum of dspMaxThreads of ALL domains should be <= the number of mdb listener threads on the workerbean". Now when i open <SOA_HOME>/j2ee/oc4j_soa/application-deployments/orabpel/orion-ejb-jar.xml and navigate to workerbean, i can not find any listener-threads attribute in message-driven-deployment tag.

Jingzhi -- If you define the correct EJB-QL you should get the correct SQL generated for the finder. If that's not happening can you verify it against the OC4J v903 production release and see if it is still happening. I don't know if this helps with the JDeveloper problem specifically but if you don't need to create your own finders then that I hope should help.

How to configure maven to build EJB Jar?

Hi!
I would like to know how you setup Maven2 or alternatively Ant to build an EJB Jar.
I have managed to do this in Maven by adding required jars to my local repository and added dependencies in the pom.xml file. This, however, do not seem like a good solution. I would like set some kind of classpath for maven to look for all libraries included in my application server.
Could you please help me to solve this and I will be most grateful?!

ClassNotFoundException if ejb jar file is not placed in the server's classpath

Hi,
My ejb jar file contains some non-weblogic generated files and is placed in
the applications directory. When client is executed, I get the ClassNotFoundException
on the server when my bean makes a reference to the generated class. The problem
gets resolved if I put the ejb jar in the server's classpath.
This problem happens in weblogic server version 6.1. It was not happening in
the previous releases of weblogic server(6.0).

Classloading [EAR] - [webapp.war+ejb.jar]

I've got a problem with the classloader hierarchy in WL 6.0.
When I deploy my war/ejb application as an EAR, everything works fine.
But I want (for several reasons) to deploy
EJB jars and WebApp wars (or exploded Web Apps) seperately.
WL 6.0 EJB classloader doesn't export remote/home interfaces and
helper classes,
so my web app can't find them.
When I include that interfaces/classes in my Web App, I get
occasionally ClassCastExceptions (I assume depending on classloader
caching).
Is there a way to configure the classloader hierarchy, or do you have
any other solution for this?

I have a big application to do.
So, one solution should be to use an EAR for one
module, containing the WAR for the web-tier and the
EJB-JAR for the business-tier.
It would be better doing like this than creating a
big WAR, in order to avoid to deploy a big WAR when a
modification is done in one module.Are you using local EJBs or remote EJBs? The only way for a war to talk to a local EJB is to package the war along with the ejb-jar in an EAR file because they need to be collocated. You can not simply bundle EJB classes in a war file.
If you are using remte EJBs, then you can package the EJB client view classes along with the servlets and JSPs in the war file and deploy the war separately. But again your war will be one big war.
If your EJBs are just entity beans, then Java EE 5 (see http://weblogs.java.net/blog/ss141213/archive/2005/12/using_java_pers.html) allows you some nice options.

So I suggest you stick to one big war, if that's what your business requirement is.To speed up development-deployment-test cycle, any appserver allows a rapid deployment option where in you can deploy incremental changes to server. Use this facility during development. DON'T sacrifice portability of your app by using any product specific configuration that you may not find any where else.

Can I place jar files inside ejb-jar.jar?

I'm reading about the packaging rules for creating an ejb-jar.jar file, and I'm wondering whether it's possible to include a jar file (containing helper classes) inside of the ejb-jar file. A "lib" dir (for containing such helper jars) doesn't seem to be part of the ejb-jar file format.
The EJB 3 spec has this to say (Ch 20, "Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0, Final Release):
"The ejb-jar file must also contain, either by inclusion or by reference, the class files for all the classes and interfaces that each enterprise bean class and the home interfaces, component interfaces, and/or web service endpoints depend on, except Java EE and J2SE classes. This includes their superclasses and superinterfaces, dependent classes, and the classes and interfaces used as method parameters, results, and exceptions"
Now, it seems that the root of the the ejb-jar file contains all the classes (in the appropriate Java package layout). But what about including JAR files? The ejb-jar spec seems to have nothing to say about a "lib" dir that can contain jars (as a WAR file can).
Summary of questions:
1) Can an ejb-jar file contain a jar file? If so, how/where?
2) Can the ejb-jar file's META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file contain a reference to a JAR file?
I'm not considering correct design at the point... I'd just like to know if these 2 scenarios are possible.

I have an EAR file; inside the EAR I have a WAR file (web module) and an EJB-jar file (EJB module).......... the EJB need some classes placed in a jar file (a helper .jar or an util .jar)...........

Accidentially, I put this posting in an old thread. Let me create a new
thread and ask agian.
Basically, I want to clarify the directory structure.
I have an application with the following directory structure in WLS 5.1
web application:

c:\weblogic\myserver\app1\web-inf\web.xml
ejb jar files
c:\weblogic\myserver\ejbarchive\*.jar for all ejb .jar files
utilty class shared by ejb and servelet.
c:\weblogic\myserver\serverclasses\*.class for all utility class
Question 1: So now what should be the directory structure for the above
application in the expanded directory format.
say my directory for the app1 starts with:
c:\bea\wlserver6.0\config\mydomain\applications\app1
Question 2: what is the .ear format should looks like. Do I need the
"application.xml"? What entry to put in application.xml to include the
utiltiy classes?
Question 3: what will be the structure like if I want the ejb-jar in the
expanded directory also?

I assume that you mean that you are using EJB CMP Entity Beans with the EJB1.1 API ? If your beans are stable and you're satisfied with their features and performance, then it's fine to leave them alone. The WebLogic CMP2.0 implementation does offer high performance CMP features that are accessible from EJB2.0 CMP beans but not EJB1.1 CMP beans. 'field-groups' is an example, you can selectively pre-load certain fields into beans when they are first read from the database by a finder.

I just started to create my ejb-jar.xml (deployment descriptor file) manually so
that I won't depend on those generated by proprietary IDEs.
The ejb-jar_2_0.dtd specifies that env-entry is used in
entity, message-driven, and session elements.
My question is - When do we use the element <env-entry>? Under what
circumstances that ejb-jar_2_0.dtd necessitates its provision in the ejb-jar.xml
in relation to entity, message-driven, and session elements?

I am clearly missing items in the weblogic-ejb-jar.xml. If anyone has a sample or tips, that would be awesome as a starting point.

Those tags just declare that you are using our CMP provider and that
your descriptor is in META-INF/weblogic-cmp-rdbms-jar.xml.
FWIW, you might also want to check out EJBGen. It tends to keep more up
to date with WLS than xdoclet.

I have app. which run under oc4j(version 020725.1695). If I try new
oc4j(version 020927.1699), app doesn't run.
If I compare generated orion-ejb-jar.xml by oc4j(version 020725.1695)

is a differnce.

well, actually we delete the previously deployed application always. (we had to do it in old one, and also we try it in new oc4j. It didn't help.). New oc4j always rewrite our persistence-name CASE_ID on OID.
You are right, we have mapping on old orion-ejb-jar.xml too. The purpose is that we have a variable samaCase and the colum in the table is CASE_ID.
The question is, what we are doing wrong? Our app is running in old oc4j(version 020725.1695), and not in new oc4j(version 020725.1695). The problem is in the EJB relatinship.

Packaging of EAR / WAR / EJB-JAR

Hello,
I have a big application to do.
So, one solution should be to use an EAR for one module, containing the WAR for the web-tier and the EJB-JAR for the business-tier.
It would be better doing like this than creating a big WAR, in order to avoid to deploy a big WAR when a modification is done in one module.
What about the problem of the session ?
In fact, I have to declare a context-root for one EAR.
And at each context-root is created an object HttpSession on the server.
So, I have some questions about this :
- How can I configure my WARs in order to use only one HttpSession object for every WARs ?
- Can I put multiple WARs in one EAR ? If yes, what about the context-root ? This solution would resolve the session problem.

modification is done in one module.Are you using local EJBs or remote EJBs? The only way for a war to talk to a local EJB is to package the war along with the ejb-jar in an EAR file because they need to be collocated. You can not simply bundle EJB classes in a war file.
If you are using remte EJBs, then you can package the EJB client view classes along with the servlets and JSPs in the war file and deploy the war separately. But again your war will be one big war.
If your EJBs are just entity beans, then Java EE 5 (see http://weblogs.java.net/blog/ss141213/archive/2005/12/using_java_pers.html) allows you some nice options.

There is no standard way to do this. Relying on any application server specific feature can only make your app non-portable. So I strongly recommend you not to do this.

the session problem.Can't be solved using any standard way. So I suggest you stick to one big war, if that's what your business requirement is.To speed up development-deployment-test cycle, any appserver allows a rapid deployment option where in you can deploy incremental changes to server. Use this facility during development. DON'T sacrifice portability of your app by using any product specific configuration that you may not find any where else.

Missing ejb-jar.xml

Hello!
i want to deploy an application on WebLogicServer 9.2
i have an EAR-File and a JAR-File
by deploying the application with:
java weblogic.Deployer -adminurl t3://HOST:PORT etc...
i get a message that the ejb-jar.xml in the META-INF folder does not exist.
Can i write an own ejb-jar.xml for my application in a simple way?

Wrong forum, this is about XML and your question is about EJB/J2EE. But yes, you can write one. The easiest thing is probably to copy an existing file from one of the samples that comes with your application server and edit it. There should be a graphical editor in your IDE that hides the XML and helps you get it right. Good luck and ask follow-up questions in a J2EE or WebLogic forum!
