Should I persevere?

I'm a professional photographer shooting RAW who currently uses Adobe Bridge, ACR and Photoshop CS2. I've spent about ten hours with the Lightroom trial, and so far I'm sorry to say that it doesn't look like it would save me any time over my current workflow. Admittedly that's a short period of time, but already I've found that
1) Doing simple searches is pretty straightforward, but anything slightly complicated (by which I mean based on multiple criteria) takes more thought than it ought to and doesn't fill me with confidence that I've found all I was looking for (unlike the simple list of criteria I can build in Bridge's Find dialog).
2) I can't use Stacks at anything other than a folder level. What's the point of them then? I want to be able to import a couple of thousand images from a shoot (or maybe a couple of shoots over a couple of days for the same job for the same client) into one folder, apply keywords, maybe group into collections, then view subgroups of the entire shoot(s) based on this metadata, and then stack related images together to enable me to find the best shots. Surely the major point of Collections and Keywords is that you don't have to think about where your files are physically stored?
I'm not writing this to let off steam (well maybe a little), and there are lots of thing about Lightroom that would be very useful to me that I can't do (easily) with my current workflow (different RAW conversions of the same image for different purposes, e.g. colour and black & white). What I want to know is whether other people have had this initial impression, but have persevered and changed their minds. Time is money: I don't want to spend a week on this thing only to find the best thing would be to upgrade to Bridge CS3 (or buy a Mac and get Aperture!).
Any thoughts?

Simon,
You say,
I'm not writing this to let off steam (well maybe a little), and there are lots of thing about Lightroom that would be very useful to me that I can't do (easily) with my current workflow (different RAW conversions of the same image for different purposes, e.g. colour and black & white). What I want to know is whether other people have had this initial impression, but have persevered and changed their minds. Time is money: I don't want to spend a week on this thing only to find the best thing would be to upgrade to Bridge CS3 (or buy a Mac and get Aperture!).
Yes, it will slow professional workflow for the most part in its present configuration. It is unusable to me as it is, if for no other reason because it will not import files with identical names but differing extensions.
The concept, however, is a good one, and perhaps the LR Engineers can speed it up and flesh it out with the critical, missing, parts in the next version--I won't rehearse them, but a few searches in the 3000+ threads (about 30,000 posts give or take a few) generated here in the last couple of months will bring you up to speed.
I would point out that Bridge CS3(ACR4) and LR use the same engine and have virtually identical 'Develop' features. As for Aperture, others would have to say precisely, but my impression from reading incessently here since day one is that you would likely be no better off--however, there are fewer LR problems on Macs, and LR is apparently faster there--I am on a PC as well.
TiME is money for me as well, so I use Bridge CS3 plus a full featured, fast, DAM that has watch folders and does all my DB ingestion as I work. The present bottleneck in LR is its total (virtually) dependence on Library. But, as I said, if the Engineers can bring it up to comparable speed with comparable features to what I am now using, then I certainly would adopt it.

    hi
I bought a DELL 3007WFP 30" LCD monitor in 2007. It worked perfectly with my old MacBook Pro and Tiger and Leopard and in System Preferences > Display gave me options of 1920 x 1200 pixels or 1440 x 900 pixels as well as 1280 x 800 pixels.
I have recently moved to a new 17" UniBody MacBook Pro with NVIDIA Geoforce 9600GT and 9400GM graphic cards in it (which is fabulous!!) and also upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Now when I plug in the DELL I get a maximum resolution option of 1280 x 800.
Whilst this resolution makes the text nice and big for my 43 year old failing eyesight I find it very un-Mac like for this to happen. I have looked here and found a few suggestions eg have been playing with SwitchResX4 and got the 1440 option back in the list BUT when selected the screen goes black.
    2 questions:
    1) What is that has made this problem appear - is it Snow Leopard or the new MacBook Pro and its hardware?
    2) Should I persevere with SwitchResX4or is there another solution?

To use the full resolution of your 30" monitor, you need a *mini-Displayport to dual-link DVI* adapter:

  • Skillbuilders Modal plugin onclick attribute gets removed

    Hi,
    Apex 4.2.0.00.27, IE8, Firefox 17.0
I am trying to use the Skillbuilders Modal plugin with a classic report. I followed the instructions and in the link column put the following in the link attributes:
    onclick="return false;" class="edit-link"
When I click the classic report 'edit' link the new page opens full size instead of in a modal window (it works correctly from a separate button). Examination of the page in Firebug suggests that the 'onclick="return false;" attribute is being removed.
    Page Source excerpt:

I tried create do a simple version to upload, but as is always the way, that one worked fine.
Can anyone suggest why the onclick="return false" bit might be getting dropped?
    Thanks,
    Nick.

Further info - the page in question has a Form and a Report region. The modal window opens correctly if I remove the page process for updating the form (the standard 'Process Row...'). Setting a condition of 'Never' has no effect, the mere prescence of this page process is enough to break it.
Does anyone know if Apex 5.0 will have a simpler Modal functionality, or will it be based on this plugin? In other words, should I persevere with it or wait for the new version.
Apologies for the useless code extract above - it looked fine when I posted this on the old forum but the new 'improved' one can't seem to cope with it.
    Nick.

  • Despair of a switcher (longish)

    Hi all,
I wanted to share my experience of pure frustration with Apples hardware and see if there is anyone else with similar experiences.
After researching and reading many magazines, web sites and books, and playing with a Powerbook, I decided to take the plunge and switch from my PC's to an iMac.
I bought my 20" iMac G5 on the 7th September 05, not quite 2 weeks ago. I was getting the RAM upgraded to 1 Gb in the shop, so I asked to inspect the machine first as I was somewhat suspicious of dead pixels etc.
Sure enough when the sales assistant booted the machine there was a bright red dead pixel in the centre of the display. I asked if I could see another machine and thankfully the shop agreed and we tried another. The screen was fine, so the tech installed the RAM and away I went.
When I got home and set up the machine, it became very apparent that there was a very loud buzzing coming from the bottom right area of the unit, and having read these forums I suspected a dodgy fan. However, I noticed the area would get very hot after an hours use, and the buzzing was incredibly irritating.
I went through all the diagnostic help on the web site, did the webchat thing and spoke to Appple support, who established it was a faulty power supply unit, and since the machine was brand new I could have a replacement. So 3 days after purchase, I took the machnine back to the store, and they agreed to exchange it after showing them the transcript of the apple chat and the case number etc.
They swapped out my RAM to the new machine, and let me inspect the screen, thankfully this was ok and free from defects too. So off I went happy with the service of the shop.
I got home set up and everything was fine, I was overjoyed at the diffence in noise from the other machine, and no case that you almost stuck to when touched.
Therefore for the next few evenings, I imported most of my CD's to iTunes, transfered my pictures and files from my PC, bought some H/K soundsticks to further my pleasure with iTunes, and generally enjoyed the whole Mac experience and its superior operating system to that of windows.
Then, last night the machine died while I was browsing these very forums.
I went to my PC, went through all the diagnostic site, with the back off my iMac the LED's indicated a dead power supply unit, yes the same faulty component as the previous machine. I then tried to order another online, but I could only get as far as the page that asks for your serial number, when you input the number it will not go any further. So I tried the webchat support again, after 30 minutes the tech decided I had a dead power supply unit, and gave me a link to another site to order a new one.
So off I go to the new site, input all my information, but when it comes to selecting the defective component, the power supply is not listed. Obviously I am getting quite frustrated by all this at this time, I go back and tell the webchat agent that theres no part listed, so he gives me the telephone support number, its too late to call them so I tell them that I'll call tommorow.
So I try call today and the lines are closed (Sunday).
The upshot is, within 2 weeks I've had 2 defective machines (3 if I hadn't checked the one in the store prior to purchasing it) and now I'm stuck with a dead iMac, I'm tempted to try and get a refund at the store and forget the whole sorry mess, but I think they would probably refuse. Also I didnt set up a user account for my wife on the second machine, therefore if they get it working whoever boots it up will have access to some of my personal documents etc.
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment, I like the Mac, but I cannot believe how unreliable the hardware seems to be, I don't know whether to try and persevere and replace the PSU (eventually) or insist on a refund and wash my hands of Apple.
    Your views would be appreciated.

    Hi Daniel,
<center><small>"I like the Mac, but I cannot believe how unreliable the hardware seems to be..."</small></center>
Those were my own words when I got my iMac G4 a year and a half ago.
After my so reliable Mac II (vintage), I was so disappointed, but after the 7 weeks repairs (motherboardinverterdisplay), I've been very very happy with a perfect machine finally.
You should just persevere in this shop (they are doing their best, as far as I can see) in your polite and efficient way.
Eventually you'll get one or many very important parts of your computer replaced, or even the whole machine.
--> Ask for a loan PowerBook, or anything the shop could offer, during your waiting time, and ask them to ask Apple a warranty extention.
You paid for a high-quality/high-reputation computer.
It's in nobody's (Apple, the shop, you) interest to let Macs become less and less reliable/reputated computers.
    Good luck!

  • Is my iPhone Faulty?

My iPhone is a little over a week old. I've upgraded to 2.0.1. I've removed every 3rd party app. I've restored maybe 10 times - so I think that I have covered all the bases but:
    1. Answering the phone is a unreliable operation. Sometimes my finger on the screen will work - but others it freezes.
    2. Apps crash back to the menu screen - particularly if the phone has not been reset for 2-3 hours.
    3. Bluetooth performance is woeful. It will sometimes pair in the car, but most times I need to reset before this will occur
    4. I have a cable in my car that connects to the dock connector to play audio. Not a problem with any iPod - but it doesn't work with the iPhone. Not sure if it should - but it seems a bit strange.
Should I persevere with this - or do I genuinely have problems?
    Thanks .... Craig

This is more like a glitch in the iPhone. I would return the phone to the store where I purchased it for a replacement.
    Tamara wrote:

What do you mean if these apps are badly written -
The question should have been are they authorized 3rd party apps obtained through the Apple Store or are they unauthorized 3rd party apps?
If they are apps from Apple, they should have been checked out by Apple prior to their availability by the general public to insure their operability.
If the apps are not SDK and Apple authorized then SeeDee is out of luck.

  • Resolution on 20" ACD in XP SP2

I'm having trouble setting up a 20" ACD on my pc which has an ASUS AX800PRO/TVD/256M graphics card.
The graphics card is capable of a resolution of 1600x1200. According to the manual the manual ACD works best at 1680X1050.
    I seem to have the following options, none of which appeal to me;
    - 1280X1024
This leaves two large areas of unusable screen space
    - 1280X1024 Scaled to size of the display
Everything is stretched and out of shape
    - 1600X1200
The desktop goes beyond the visible area
There doesn't appear to be an option to scale 1600X1200 back down to the size of the display.
I thought the WinACD utility may help so I downloaded and installed it. It didn't solve my problem and also didn't seem to work as expected. Maybe the two issues are related.
Should I persevere with getting the WinACD utility working am I limited to the above options with this graphics card?
Or, if someone could suggest something else I'd be greatly appreciative.
It didn't appear obvious to me what the program actually does. I searched this forum and the download site where the WinACD utility is located.
    Thanks

    Finally got it working!!!!
Thanks for the pointing me in the right direction. I downloaded the Catalyst drivers as you suggested but it still didn't work. After some further searching I found the following information and now it's working fine and looking good.
ATI x800 Pro (1 good one bad) (but to avoid flickering, be sure to uncheck both
Reduce DVI frequency on hi-res displays
    AND
    Alternate DVI operational mode.
    ALSO:
download newest Catalyst drivers change advanced display settings
    enable V-Sync
make sure applicationsin full-screen mode keep the same 60hz refresh rate

  • Headphone jack is broken but works when i forcibly push the earphones in

okay so it seems like the headphone jack on my ipod classic 160gb (which is well out of warranty) is broken as it only works on one channel no matter what headphones i use, but when i push it in forcibly it still works in both ears for a second, but I can't hold it for long. I've tried cleaning any dust out with cotton buds and a can of compressed air but had no luck so far, should I persevere with this method or is there a chance the jack is still broken?
    cheers

The jack is broken. You can buy and fit a new headphone jack/hold switch assembly. Getting the iPod opened up is a little tricky but there are video tutorials to help out. I've done several of these and also battery swap outs.

As the proud UK owner of a new Zen Micro Silver, i would appreciate opinion as to whether i should add the latest player firmware .02.05 and the playforsure 2.00.2 straight away. Should I persevere with it 'as is' for a while first or is the standard media s/w that bad?

  • Importing Apple Aperture files.

I have attempted to import an Aperature library file but it is greyed out so I cannot select it. Whilst it is possible to copy and paste to the desktop, I am talking about a 50Gb file. Can any one offer a suggestion please?

Thank you Barbara for responding to my question.
Yes, I wanted a quick and easy editing package but still keep Aperture as an organiser. I find that Aperture is not that intuitive when you are in a hurry to produce something quickly. You seem to know Aperture. Do you also know Adobe Photoshop CS range and is Aperture as good? In other words, should I persevere with Aperture or invest in the Photoshop CS range. Most of the work I do is for marketing, ie. sales literature, web pages, media presentations and reports.
If you have the time to respond I will be very thankful but understand if you do not.
With your quick advice I have charged the settings to make Photoshop Elements 11 as an external editor.

  • Should I Give it Up and Go Back To Tiger?

That's the decision I'm wrestling with right now. My issues are not legion. Mostly they revolve around three things: Stability, Usability and Speed.
    STABILITY:
I get odd freezes and random program crashes that have now twice resulted in having to push the power button to reboot. The mouse moves, but nothing works, no menus, can't even bring up the Force Quit window to quit an offending app.
In one day Mail crashed over-and-over until I could no longer use the computer and shut down and pulled out my PowerBook to send an email! After rebooting and fsck'ing and repairing Permissions the problem seemed to go away, but I have way too many crashes of even Apple programs that ought to be playing nicer with Leopard.
I also get a LOT more bouncing beachballs with Leopard in almost every app than with Tiger. Although my main Mac is not Intel or even G5, I should still be well within the system requirements for Leopard with a dual 1.25GHz G4 with 1.75 GB of RAM. My system drive has over 100GB open (I have four internal drives equaling 1.3TB) and I keep all of my software updated.
I do have one 2nd party PCI USB 2.0 card that doesn't require drivers and it works, but I haven't tested Leopard without that card, but I do have USB 2.0 devices that I need to run, so that alone would require a step backward if I couldn't run the USB 2.0 card because of some odd compatibility issue.
    USABILITY:
Two things just irritate the heck out of me and one is a minor irritant that I probably just need to learn more about
One is the lack of hierarchical menus in the dock. Unlike a lot of people I like Stacks, but I'd like to have the option to go seamlessly from a Stack to a hierarchical menu.
The other is the inability to put a custom icon on a dock drive or folder. I have to create a dummy folder, put a blank space at the front of the name and use it as the icon for the item, but even then, all those icons behind it clutter up the look of the folder/drive and thus, the dock as a whole. There should be an option for having a SINGLE clean icon without going through odd gymnastic to get one!
I have a very small issue with the behavior of Spotlight. In Tiger, a Spotlight search's results were displayed in a more quick and orderly way, at least that how it seems to me. In Leopard when you click "show all" although it categorizes them as I have it set up in Spotlight's preferences, there isn't a clear delineation between classifications and there is no "info" button to quickly see the path and general info for the file. To see info you have to right click and choose "Show Info" unless I am missing something.
However, the addition of Boolean logic categories by option-clicking the plus sign or clicking to add categories to the search rules negates a lot of my gripe about Spotlight. I'd like to see it be as responsive as Tiger, but it's hard to argue with the ability to drill-down to exactly what you're looking for.
But, Spotlight is also MUCH slower than Tiger's Spotlight which leads me to:
    SPEED:
As mentioned, I have one of the fastest G4s and a dual processor to boot and I'm nearly maxed on RAM, so you'd think Leopard would run faster, but there is a general lag in usability across the board. Not a killer lag, but noticeable and the aforementioned beachballs pop up enough to add even MORE of an irritating lag to the process. I find myself hitting "Force Quit" a LOT more often and seeing "'program x has stopped responding" in the Force Quit menu.
I like Leopard. There are some nice features that truly do improve the overall utility of the OS, so I think it's a good release, but there are just too many issues for me now, maybe because of my G4 PowerMac, it seems to have fewer issues (except for the speed thing) on my FW 800 Powerbook, but for now I want fast and logical and Tiger is all that.
I will return to Leopard if I step back because it's just too good an update to ignore and it is after all, the future of Macs, but right now Leopard is killing my productivity. On more than one occasion I've lost data before saving when a crash happened and that was a VERY rare occurrence with Tiger.

    Thanks for the responses!
I always do a clean install, backing up, formatting the drive, etc. I find it reduces the number of issues overall.
I was going to do a dual-boot setup with Tiger originally, but I've had such good luck with OS X updates that I wasn't concerned. But since I've had these problems, I hadn't revisited that option so, since I eventually will return to Leopard that may be a good solution.
However, I just read elsewhere after writing this as one of you mentioned, that the 10.5.2 update is slated to be a big release with a lot of fixes, so that may be worth the wait before doing anything precipitous.
There is one very odd thing, though . . . I have an iPhone and while I could sync without a problem initially, recently I've had some issues syncing until now I can't sync at all. I took the iPhone in and they swapped it out for a new phone, but I came home and had the same issues, so before returning to the Apple store I tried it on my PowerBook (running Leopard) and sure enough, it synced with no issues!
So I'm wondering if there isn't some problem that may be hardware-related that is causing me to have more issues on the PowerMac side than on the PowerBook side? I think I need to strip the PowerMac down to its original components, basically unplug everything but the keyboard and mouse, remove that USB card and see what happens.
It ran fine under Tiger so I'm not happy about having to do this, but hey, it's the price of progress and at least it's not that "other" OS!
BTW, I think it's funny how some tech writers are trying, straining to compare the issues that some of us are having with Leopard with the Vista release which was an unmitigated disaster!
I'm content to work through it until I find the same stability I had under Tiger with this new cat . . . let's hope the new update does the trick. Anyone heard a release date for 10.5.2?
    Thanks for the suggestions!

I have deployed 2 different web application on IIS 7.5 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 but on different port numbers i.e. one application deployed on port no. 1776 and another on 8091. I want to rewrite URL in such a way that if i hit any page of first

Example: if i access any page from first application like:

then it should redirect to specific page of another application along with some changes in url:
    http://g2wv126rbsc:8091/main/commercial/commercial-solutions/financing/default2.aspx
Note: In above mentioned url, also removed "sites".
I tried to create a inbound rule through URL Rewrite module (installed on IIS 7.5) by selecting Action as "Rewrite" but didn't find any success.
I need some examples if anyone has come across same kind of issue.
