"show when being observed" not showing

All machines are OS 10.8.5, Remote desktop on clients and master machine is 3.7.1
Although "show when being observed" is selected in the remote management settings on the client, the menu icon that should show up on observation doesn't show.
If I try to trigger it manually by double-clicking Macintosh HD/System/Library/Core Services/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu still no icon is displayed. However no entry indicating a problem is listed in the system log in console.
For comparison, the other menu icons triggered by double clicking the files in the Menu Extras folder work fine (eject, homesync status, etc).
Does anyone know of software that interferes with the "show when being observed" function?
Is there a command line way of enabling this on the client?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
". . . is there a command line way of enabling this on the client?"
Yes. Try:
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -configure -clientopts -setmenuextra -menuextra yes
The above is all on one line and must be run as root. To disable the option replace 'yes' with 'no'.
The manual for kickstart is available by simply typing:
man /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent/Contents/Resources/kicks tart
in Terminal.
" . . . Does anyone know of software that interferes with the "show when being observed" function?"
Possibly the topology and/or physical health of your network? Assuming a stock OS install, a healthy drive and with nothing 3rd-Party added it should j'ust work'. By 3rd-Party I don't mean applications such as Adobe CS etc. I mean Little Snitch, Onyx etc and a whole host of other 'system' or 'utility' programs that on the surface appear to 'help' but in fact may be mudying the waters?
HTH?

  • Show when being observed check box

Anyone know of a script that will look every hour to see if the "show when being observed" check box is enable or not, and then enable it if not?
    Thanks

I need it to run on multiple clients.
You can run that task on whatever clients you want. Just select the clients before you schedule and save the task. The task will then automatically run for the clients you selected.
Also, it is not the visibility in the menu bar that I care much about as that can be on while the show while observed is off.
In the latest client (at least as of 3.2; I can't remember about 3.1 and 3.0) it's all one preference. There's no separate setting just for the "show while being observed"; if the menu bar item is showing, it will show when the system is being observed.

  • Batch Comamand to Change "Show When Being Observed" on clients to OFF?

I administer roughly 70 machines via ARD3 and have a question:
Is it possible to turn "Show When Being Observed" off on all machines without having to crawl thru each one one-by-one?
I am also using Workgroup Manager to admin all the machines via Open Directory but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do this.

OK, I can't find the appropriate .plist file for the life of me.
It is not the com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist one as that is for the Admin Application only. As far as I can see, when I make channges to the setting manually, the com.apple.SystemPreferences file changes, but I don't think the setting is there and I think the Finder shows it simply because I am in the System Prefs and unlocking it, etc.
So in short, I can't figure out what .plist nor what string to add. Any help?

  • ARD Show when being observed

Does anyone know if there's anyway to set it so that users can allow or deny being observed/controlled through ARD? And is tehre a way to push it out through unix command?

You can turn off the Control/Observe privilege, and turn on the "Anyone may request permission..." checkbox under "Computer Settings...".
This will present a dialog to the user when the admin requests to observe/control the system. Note that the downside to this is that if no user is at the machine, you can't gain access. It might be possible to work around this with the "VNC viewers may control screen with password" option... I'm not certain.

In other words, how does your explanation account for ED (enhanced definition)?
ED is generally considered to be 576p or 480p, but this is not universally accepted and these resolutions are often accepted as HD also. Additionally an ED signal uses non square pixels just as SD does so the horizontal pixel dimensions should be no more than 720. Exactly how the tv would treat these resolutions I don't know (yet).
If you have a copy of the source code for the function that displays the HD icon, please post it so I can take a look at it.
Why should I have such a copy and why is it relevant. The issue here is that the OP believes his video is incorrectly labelled HD which is not the case. There may or may not be anomalies in the way the tv attributes the HD label to some files (although it isn't the case for me), however the OP has incorrectly converted his source video and they are no longer SD, they are also not ED by whichever definition you wish to apply and any such anomalies should they exist are not responsible for the OP's files being labelled HD.

  • I show up as Online when I'm not

Hello, I have been having a problem lately where all of my contacts see me as online even though I'm not signed in. I have explicitly signed out of Skype on my iPhone and on my Mac. This is getting pretty annoying as people (coworkers, family, friends) think I'm online and try to send me messages or call me when I'm not online and they get upset that I don't reply. I searched the message boards for some fixes. I tried several of them to no effect. One of them had me delete my Skype folder in ~/Application Support but I had to revert it since a lot of my contacts started showing up as "Pending" (like I'd sent them a Contact Request and the had yet to reply); this was unacceptable for me. Does anybody have any new ideas on how to fix this? If it keeps up I'm going to try to sign up for a second account on another computer and keep an eye on my primary account's online status using that second account while I attempt to debug the issue. This seems like a huge waste of time to me and I'm not sure if I'd rather just get rid of Skype if it comes to that. Thank you. - nc1024

This started happening to me too recently and my boyfriend is being accusing because of it so I really just want to know how the heck do I make myself look offline because I clearly am. I just go under the skyp status drop down menu and set myself to 'offline' or will keep myself online and manually signoff of skype. I figured manually signing off will turn my status to offline. Even when I do the pulldown menu and set my status to offline he's said I was online because I received an 'offline' message from him which isn't part of skype, therefore I know I was showing myself online. That being said, if I go under the menu and first set to "offline", THEN, sign out, will it finally show me as truly offline? I hate having to do that because I like the convience of just 'waking my computer' and setting my status to online, NOT having to sign in all over again. So again, if you just varify with me the long way of making myself definitely be shown as 'offline' that would be awesome. I don't care if I have to sign in the long way so long as my boyfriend is not feeling like I'm ignoring him when I'm not ONLINE but Skype is still showing me as online urrggghhh!

Your response to my question seems to reflect a rude attitude simply because I asked this question.  In response to your response, I have no manual, and the first place I went for info was the HP website - and I got you.
There are three things that I need from you, and none of them is a sarcastic rude attitude.  Please provide me with the following information:
         1.  Information on how to clean the rollers.

  • Showing my contacts as online when they're NOT

It's really getting into my nerves. My contact has his skype automatically answering calls from me so I can can call him even when he's sleeping without disturbing him because our skype calls always get cut after a few minutes. This has happened all the time before, it always shows that he's online even when he's not! When I call, the voice message shows up and it's getting pretty annoying. I found a solution before, I quit skype and open it again. or I look at my iPhone's skype because it USED to show if someone really is online or offline, or I sign out on skype and sign in again, or I even turn off my wifi and turn it on again. I even changed my laptop from the Microsoft Surface 2 to an Apple Macbook Air because I thought the Surface 2 was the problem. BUT NO. SKYPE WAS THE PROBLEM. I did all 4 methods even when they're really annoying to do, and they worked fine for a few days, BUT NOW THEY DON'T DO SH**. I looked at my phone's skype, logged out my phone's skype and logged in again, logged out my laptop's skype and logged in again, turned off my wifi and turned it on again, quit my laptop's skype and open it again, and again and again and again! Note that everytime I do each method, I try to call him incase he's online, but that FFFFFing video message thing shows up EACH TIME.
I'm seriously pissed off. Skype was the only thing connecting us because we're in a long distance relationship. Skype isn't helping at all. I am on the verge of switching from this crap to Viber because I heard viber was WAY BETTER. Fix this man. Uggghhhh!!

    Hi Daniel:
    Try this:
Complete the following steps to enable presence in Microsoft Outlook for individual users with the Active Directory User and Computers administrative tool:
Step 1       Start the Active Directory User and Computers administrative tool. You must have administrator permissions to run the Active Directory User and Computers administrative tool.
Step 2       Select View in the menu bar and then select the Advanced Features option from the drop-down list.
Step 3       Navigate to the appropriate user in the Active Directory User and Computers administrative tool.
Step 4       Double click the user to open the Properties dialog box.
Step 5       Select the Attribute Editor tab.
Step 6       Locate and select the proxyAddresses attribute in the Attributes list box.
Step 7       Select Edit to open the Multi-valued String Editor dialog box.
Step 8       In the Value to add text box, specify the following value: SIP:user@cupdomain.
    For example, SIP:[email protected]
Where the user@cupdomain value is the user's instant messaging address. cupdomain corresponds to the domain for Cisco Unified Presence or Cisco Unified Communications IM and Presence.

You said "The messages i received when i did not have signal are not showing up."
How do you know received them?
If the sender got a message that the Messagers were not delivered than they were never delivered and the only way for you to get them is for the sender to resent them

Long standing problem, much discussion on the forums.  Typically it has to do with incompatibility of Microsoft Exchange email client.  See the links on "More Like this" at right.
    Two solutions:
One is to  zip compress the file and send the attachment that way.
Another is the freebie program "Attachment Tamer" - see

  • IPhone showing up as connected to my iTunes on my Mac when it is not

    Hi -
All of the sudden this week, I have gone into my iTunes and it has shown that my phone is connected to my iMac when it is not. I always eject my devices before unplugging them. If I want to sync, I have to eject the phantom device before I can start the sync. My sync settings for the iPhone are 1) Automatically sync when connected and sync this phone over wifi. Has anyone seen this before?

    SOLUTION!
I've been suffering from this problem for a few months.  I tried everything suggested by everyone, and then, today, I had a mad idea.
I used to work in a room in the house that's about 12 metres away from the router. It's on the next storey up and horizontally about 8 metres away.  The problem started when I began to work in the same room as the router.
Today I became so frustrated that for some reason I walked into a room about 8 metres away on the same level - Guess what?  I connected with no problem at all. Feeling full of joy I walked back to the room where the router is located - Dropped internet connection within a few minutes!  Walked back to the the room that's 8 metres away and, hey presto! I have a connection. I now realise that the problem was that I moved too close to the router.
I can think of no logical explanation for my experience, but empirically it seems to work.  Does anyone have the faintest idea of why this should be the case?  In the absence of an answer I think I may have to start believing in fairies at the bottom of the garden - I'm just off to set a meal for them.
By the way, I don't know if it has any significance, but the router is a BT Infinity router that has replaced the incredibly unreliable Virgin Media cable connection
